Being that 1 Evasion is +.5% chance to evade, these give you an additional 7.5% evasion, as long as you're not capped.

Kind of a catch-22, though. Only useful when you're in the red, but anything that can knock you down that low is likely to kill you....

Not to mention you can even get away with blinktanking since some TP moves can ignore shadows.
Is it useful?

When might a thief want to use this, given that we have perfect dodge and tons of evasion available to us? Well, have you tanked Charby on thf/nin? You really want to have an alternative in your pocket to at least one of the bat earrings (assuming you are not using melody +1s). Charby is best tanked by a full evasion (read: full evasion merits) thief, with evasion skill around 303, and another 50+ evasion from food and gear (yep, forget DE, use Evisc or Shark Bite and use Jackos, the -10 chr is not an issue). However, if you have a bard and are using melody +1's, then you would do best to keep this in storage. Other than that, I can think of very few times when I would use this... mainly because Tarus do not stay in the red (or even go in the red); they just die.

Sorry to burst someone's bubble but... ya, red hp triggers the latent. With this ability and a THF wearing it, the item might be useful in emergencies but other earrings, like the Sorcerer's one that I tested, have abilities that have very little usefulness in my opinion.
hmm

Only 1k on Bahamut, and doesn't sell very often. But if this earring is activated when one has to under 100% this would be great for soloing. I'm going to have to test it once I buy one o.o
i tested...

Clarification

Here's some interesting information which makes some sense now that I know it.

I thought maybe it was red hp that activated it only so I equipped this and the level 50 Rogue's ring and all my steal+ gear and went to Bibiki Bay to steal Gold Beastcoins. Having 1100 or so hp with that gear set-up made it so that having to have hp in the red meant I needed hp to be 279 or lower so I proceeded to get hit from mobs, killed them, then moved in deeper to the harder area.

After not noticing any difference between yellow and red hp, I was sitting there waiting for my steal timer to be up and I was watching a party while in a safe area. I have a macro that basically screams at people to stop their cures as they like to heal you when they see you without knowing that you want low hp. So i'm watching this party clear out stuff and steal was up so I cast Tonko: Ni and proceeded to the next first gob I could find....a spellcaster as it turned out. (this is where you prolly don't see anything wrong with I just did either, hehe) If you get a spell cast on you after you use "Hide", you must cast Tonko IMMEDIATELY after as they just sit there for a few seconds and you DO have that chance at least. But this time, I didn't have Tonki: Ni as I HAD JUST CASTED IT!!! Now you see where I went wrong. Firaga III for 808 damage when you have 260 hp = death.

Now to my point, this earring gives latent effect: evasion+15, and if you were to wear it all the time, it would seem useless as most ppl don't see red hp often, even less at level 70. When your hp drops to 25%, are you going to be trying to equip this earring? I say NO! You will be panicking, using perfect dodge, and warping, not hoping your earring will save you! High level equipment is usually anywhere from kick-*** to ******* amazing and I need to have it asap, so why would SE make a BCNM item so pathetic? They wouldn't!

Red hp (25%) is absolutely ridiculous. Like so many have said, it is yellow and tp under 100%. Read the post some guy had with the warrior's one.

This ring, as well as any other level 70 latent effect JSE earring, and pretty sure all of the level 50 JSE rings, all trigger to a certain health percentage. These are either triggered by red or yellow health. Not sure which.

The lvl 70 earrings are cheap because they ARE the ones with low health. The ones for correct subjob are the lvl 30 eq, which go for 20k-> 4 million each on Diabolos (RDM sub cape, +1 mp while healing *drools*)

Just a Theory: maybe the latent effect is triggered by equiping the BCNM50 ring by the same name?

latent effects are ones in which the effects are triggered by an unstated situation. alot of jp players have been buying up latent gear now that they realize its not triggered by health. alot of the BCNM gear is triggered by the correct subjob. I would have to guess that because this is called Rogues earring, that if it's triggered by a sub job, it would be THF/NIN...but that may be wishful thinking on my part. <buys for 3k on AH> guess i'll find out, in the mean time, i'm willing to be out 3k for a lvl 70 earring that might have huge potential.
