I don't know if any of you have played a PS2 game called Shadow of Destiny, but the in depth story is based around the Philosopher's Stone and the Homunculus. It's a great game, but it's more of a puzzle game, like Resident Evil without the fighting. I enjoyed it and it does have multiple endings. I recommend playing it if you want a full understanding of what this whole Philosopher's Stone and Homunculus are about.
The word Philosopher is also an archaic way of saying Alchemist. The Philosoper's Stone is also an old legend/story. (It's even a little more famous than you might think; it was the focus point on the first Harry Potter book/move. The "Philosopher's Stone" in the book was changed to the Sorcerer's Stone in America.) You can toss up a search pretty easily for more info. Even Dictionary.com.
Anyone watch the anime Full Metal Alchemist? The Philosopher's Stone and the Homunculus are main parts of the series. Maybe they are using ideas from there. Then again, maybe they are both from some older stories.
Full Metal Alchemist and this game use terms that are an alusion to mythology and folklore related to Alchemy. They didn't make up the stone or this monster. google both of the words you'll find some crazy stuff :-)
the ideals of alchemy, and all the terms stated above, all WAY predate this game, that anime, and every last one of us. It's like saying the hindu named their god shiva after playing this.

got some info on this item, its a master level Alchmist craft, like lvl 86 and above. Its made using the Philospher's Stone and some other minor ingredients. What I'm saying is that this is hard as hell to synthsize.
It calls an awesome MAndargora type pet that kicks a whole lot of ***. I mean a bunch, it can cast several higher level BLM spells for a lvl 23 item. I used one on the dread dragon fight and the thing pretty much soloed the dragon, and I saw it cast Aeroga and Blizaga.
judging on prior knowledge of alchemy, its probably a robot. one of the original alchemists goals was to create a "homonculus" which was an artificial living being.
