You can do quest Bait and Switch and obtain a key ring belt that dispenses the keys.
Sub-skill cap

This capped at 31 Alchemy for me. Did 3 more stacks of ingredients and capped bone at 43, not even a .1 alchemy in there.

Skel Key

Just incase anyone does happen to look at this and need more info you can go to ffxi.cannotlinkto there is a lot more info there, however yes these keys can be made at alchemy lvl 34! and are a lot less costly to be made with the alchemy skill versus the bonecraft! There are a lot more recipies on ffxi.cannotlinkto as well!!

ok my bone craft is 44 and it tells me im not high enough lvl for the synth. did they change the lvl on it or something cause i would like to make them for my thf....
RE: Skeleton keys

this has alchemy secondary, which means if you don't have any alchemy leveled it will say you're not high enough to attempt regardless of how high your bonecrafting is.

is a 15 thief going to fail a lot trying to open the coffers in the Maze Of Shakhrami?

Coffers aren't in Shakrami... only chests.. and maybe. There's not a very good chance, I don't think.

I've had a fair amount of experience with these as a LV59 THF, and can possibly clear a couple things up.

As far as success rate goes, it's unpredictable. I failed 3 times with Skeleton keys at LV55 going for my AF Vest in Zvahl Bailey's. Fortunately they were simply fails w/o mimic or weak, so the chest remained. Tried one living key - bam, Rogue's Vest.

Now on another AF venture in Oztroja, I got 2 mimics with Skel keys before unlocking one for my AF pants, did this at LV55 too w/ all skels.

Just yesterday, now at LV59 and using exclusively Skeleton keys due to their rumored superiority, I opened two coffers, Fei'yin and Eldieme. Both resulted in failure > weakness. Disgusting.

So from personal experience, these keys aren't mimic-proof OR weakness proof. Despite the hardship of yesterday, I have gone on streaks with them before. I'd really love to know the formula that SE uses here.. amazing how in depth a game this is; I'm more impressed every day.

for keys, if you try to open a chest and fail. You will become Weakened, for a pretty long time BTW.
Not sure if you can try to open the chest again, while weakened

You can't open them while weakened. I've tried it, it didn't work.

I don't think that's true with these keys, being that I failed to pick a lock with one today, and I was not weakened.

Since this uses carbon fiber, I theorise that you'd need at least mid-forties alchemy skill to attempt crafting them, probably capped at mid-high fifties.
RE: Alchemy
# Oct 13 2005 at 11:03 PM Rating: Decent
if this is sorted in Bonecraft, the Alchemy skill has to be lower than Bonecraft, at least usually...

Maybe...but there are plenty of recipies with carbon fiber that don't even need alchemy to be made. I'm thinking that you don't need that high of an alchemy level to make it. Call it more of a hope actually...I want to make these.
RE: Alchemy
# Jul 17 2004 at 8:27 PM Rating: Decent
Carbon Fiber, Glass Fiber, Hect eyes, and animal glue are all related to alchemy. My guess is that Alchemy is the main in this... in the 70's cause of the Hect eyes. Just a guess though.
RE: Alchemy
# Feb 27 2005 at 2:30 PM Rating: Decent
these are for sure not in the 70s :S I have 62 alc and 58 bonecraft and I normally HQ at least once if not twice for every stack of ingedents

Pretty much as the description implies. THF job can use it to open treasure chests and coffers without getting the actual Chest Key or Coffer Key. I'm going to stick to my Thief Tools though since they are cheap and effective as is.
Keys open chests>>chests = goodies>>goodies = :D :D :D $_$

You have to make them. Hecteye eyes are kind of pricey, I don't know about loops of carbon and glass fiber, but they require a solid alchemy base to make. Chicken bones are also kind of pricey.

chicken bones are cheap if you're not lazy. i mined up 4 of them in 5 minutes in the canyons at an excavation point.
