Red Mage75/Beastmaster75 absolutely ruins Haku eye mobs. If you can find someone with or will level those two jobs, you'll find killing them about as hard as farming sheep wool.
And yes, the drop rate is atrocious. It usually takes me one gaming session (@~3 hours) per eye.

As a RDM71/BLM35, these weren't too scary. Just follow the DoT method and find a good kiting hallway. I used the one just SE of the Ogama spawn. Bind can last few seconds some times, so have a back-up plan. Otherwise...

I have seen many guides on this, and most of them refer to the omniprevolent chance of aggros and no safe camp spots. I am sitting right now at the southwest corner of H-9, and have been for some time fighting. At one point, I even took 30 min to eat dinner, and no aggro. Great camp spot, now to get Wooden #3 and get drunk...

H-9 of which map? In which Area? These 2 areas involve 10 different maps that all have an H-9...

He means H-9/10 on the Hakutaku map. There's one wide open spot in the tunnel that you can hunker down in safely.

All I've ever seen them do is their own thing, I know 1 75BST/37WHM but to actually get someone like that to help? meh! Does anyone else have any suggestions as to a decent party or alliance configuration and strategy for fighting them and dealing with other mobs in the area? In my thinking, people come here for info before they go do stuff, coming back here to see this would be a mute point.

Just a suggestion...
You could try to get in the alliance for a group that is going after Hakutaku.
Whenever I offer my services in the clean-up crew for an O-Hat run I usually see a wooden eye drop every hour or so. The scrolls are nice, too.
Just watch out for Fire IV. I got roasted as a 66RDM for about 1000 damage. Ouch ><
If you go with your own party, I'd say a balanced party with a 70+ tank and everyone else at least 65 should be fine. Getting down to Hakutaku is probably the best spot, but getting there can be a real pain.

Go South West on the 1st map til u get to the path downstairs (h-13) (B on the BEB map http://www.ffxi.blueelephantbrigade.com/) and u'll see em down there. Id suggest bringing some BSts to charm the Mousses. 2 BSTs can take the eyes @ 70 by sic-ing Mousses on em and letting them die then grabbing another one. Its dangerous, but surprisingly... WE DIDNT DIE! /cheer.

Damn thats friggin awesome.
This drop is mega rare, in my experience. My LS went for 5-6 hours and only got 5 eyes. that's 1 drop per hour roughly >< horrible. Earthen eye was pretty bad too, but all the other ones were 1 in 5 drops.
