Assault Jerkin & You - A Guide

Again, one of the best free body piece a Dragoon can have. Personally I'm not a Dragoon nor have I played one, but this guide is based on my personal experience camping this for 2 Dragoons in my Linkshell, as well as re-accounting my EXP Party experience from 60-63 in Labyrinth of Onzozo, where I encountered Ose everyday for about a week.

•My Assault Jerkin Assault Team•
What do you need? How many people? What levels?
According to Allakazham, the Noctorious Monster (NM) that drops this Jerkin is Ose, and its a Level 65-70 NM. Because Ose is an NM, he isn't like any ordinary Level 65-70 Mob, take note of this point.

Like all other Toramas in Labyrinth of Onzozo, Ose performs irritating 'PARRRRK!-sounding' abilities that Paralyzes and Silences. This is 2 status effects are the #1 Killer for your tank, and especially so if you have a Ninja Tank. With Silence, Paladin or Ninja Tanks are unable to cast spells, and its extremely crucial for Ninjas since they utilise Utsusemi heavily for tanking. It is very very important to have an observant White Mage or someone who subs White Mage to be able to cure these Status Effects at first hand. I was the guy who fixed these Status Effects, and I was a Bard/White Mage. Ose hits alot faster than most Toramas, so its crucial that your Ninja Tanks are skillfull, if you happen to utilise one.

My EXP Party of Level 60-63 took down Ose everyday when we EXP-ed there. We had a Ninja, Bard, Red Mage, Ranger, Black Mage and a random damage dealer, usually a Samurai or Thief. No White Mages in all occasions, and the Red Mage was subbing Black Mage. It wasn't difficult for us at all, but it was crucial for me to stick Carnage Elegy, which helps alot in slowing down Ose's attacks. The Ninja Tank should also prefably not be below Level 62, or he could have some trouble sticking Hojo:Ni himself. Both Carnage Elegy and Hojo:Ni stacked to very tremendous results, drastically slowing down Ose's attack speed. That was just about the key elements to defeating Ose for my EXP Party, the rest were just normal tactics, like Skillchains. Also, try to create a Fragmentation Skillchain since Ose is weak to Wind-based spells. It is always useful to have a Ranger come along because they are practically the largest damage dealers in an Ose fight.
Please be aware that your Black Mage should never go crazy because aggro-ing Ose is seriously gonna hit him really hard.

On my other occasions, full alliances were present, consisting of Level 60-75 members. It was a cake fight if you bring along an Alliance, or as most people will do, that is to form Alliances with other EXP Parties there. I personally hate to do that because you'll probably get someone who doesn't really need the Jerkin lotting on it.

•Sounds yummy, where do I find him?•
A map of where he spawns can be found here:
http://www.boomspeed.com/rainforest4/ose.gif

I'm not exactly positive thats the exact spot although I edited the map myself, but various feedback pointed out H-5 to be the grind which Ose spawns. Since it isn't exactly 100% correct (I do not have a map of Labyrinth of Onzozo), I'll briefly describe where he pops. By the time you want to camp this baby, you should roughly have level-ed off Toramas from around Level 60-63. Now as you know, the place where most Toramas pop are in this huge room, and there are 2 tunnels which lead to them. Imagine you're facing northwards, and you're inside the left tunnel. Move all the way to the edge of the left tunnel, and Ose should pop towards your left corner.

•How do I pop him?•
Ose is spawned whenever plentiful members of his family, the Toramas are killed. When Toramas are killed consistently at a steady rate, Ose pops around 2-4 hours. There is not specific timing because it varies. But as long as you or others consistently kill Toramas, it will spawn. The best time to camp Ose is when you have many EXP-Parties inside Labyrinth of Onzozo, that'll save you more time for looking out for Ose, while EXP-Parties gobble them up.

•Ending Notes•
This section is dedicated to some useful feedback given by some of our fellow Allakazham posters over at the Ose Info Page at http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/bestiary.html?fmob=1603

Ok a few things.
I've been watching this guy for over 2 weeks I am 2/12 on him and I have to say if I don't get a chance at him for my jerkin its a fun fight none the less to watch people fight.
A. His spawn time is 2-6 hrs if the cats are being killed at a steady rate its 2-4hrs for his spawn (unless he is being gay).
B. As for the whole who gets it. I camp this guy alot. Beinga 68 drg now I know I need it, I have killed it with friends and exp parties, I never once tell anyone they can't lot on it cause in all sense they deserve it as much as I do for helping me to kill it. THOUGH its rude to lot on it if your not going to use it soon. Point over even if your a 62 rdm, I am a 68 drg I sort of need it now. I say if anyone lets me have it I will kindly lend a hand when you need it. its like Coffer keys I helpped killed your mobs why can't I lot on the key? cause I don't need the coffer for AF but I could cause I could want to level that job someday. Yes I know other jobs have uses for the jerkin plds can use it to farm with rdms use it for Maat fight and soloing. your right every job has its uses for it But some jobs need it cause its the last armor they will wear. Anywho though thats my point its Rude to lot on it when you won't even use it until later when someone needs it now or will in a few levels.
C. I've seen some strange fights but all I got to say is if you come ready and fully prepared I think you could take him. Exp parties should just allience yeah I am sure you can kill him with one party but if you ***** up once its over. haha trust me I seen my fair share of people dieing from him. (its always makes me laugh when he slaughters whole groups, even if I am in them)

One good exp party lvl 62-63 can take him out...even with a paladin tank...

An alliance is safer, but not required.

62 pld (me)
63 blm
63 rng
62 whm
63 rdm
63 sam

Ose will hit a lil harder compared to the other cats in the area (regular ~150, crits for 240-280), but a good whm/rdm combo can help keep the (even a pld) tank alive. Be prepared for a long fight tho, our main source of damage was the blm, due to his evasion.

Our samurai got the drop.
Soloable?

Many times, the discussion of whether or not this NM can be soloed, and the difficulty of this act, has arisen in various contexts.

Here, I will attempt to provide a comprehensive evaluation of this "soloability" factor. However, this comes with a disclaimer: nothing is definite. Anything can happen, and according to Murphy's Law, if it's bad, it probably will. This commentary doesn't promise anything other than a better understanding of Ose as a NM, though I do hope it will be able to help you on the battlefield, as well.

For the purposes of this post, I will be evaluating my most recent encounter as a Tarutaru 67RDM. At the time, for various reasons I won't go into, I was stuck with a significantly underlvled (17) ninja sub.

First off, let me address the common rumor that Ose is only soloable by a 74 or 75 RDM/NIN (or a BST, but that's a given): this is FALSE. If you're well prepared, you can crush this feline far earlier than that, both as RDM and Ninja.

The most important thing to know when going into this battle is this: Ose IS sleepable. I slept him (using Sleep II) 8 times in a row without fail. My enfeebling was capped at 258 (I had my torque & AF body on), and I had my Dark Staff equipped. The fact that I happened to have Ninja subbed was actually a good thing: Utsusemi was quite useful for when that cat actually woke up. Since it doesn't have an AoE, it won't be able to knock away all of your shadows, so sleeping it and keeping Utsusemi up (though Stoneskin as a backup isn't a bad idea) should be enough to let you win. I think i'll emphasize that "should" now. SHOULD. But, it won't. Why? Because Blaster doesn't bother knocking away your shadows; it goes straight through.

With that said, two new problems arise: Paralyze, and its accomplice, Silence. If you don't have any echo drops, or whatever cures Paralyze (only things I can think of are Paralyna and Remedies), you're pretty much dead. If you can stay alive long enough to get rid of the Silence or Paralyze with those aids, and re-sleep it, you can do this. With only Utsusemi: Ichi and Stoneskin up (keeping up Phalanx isn't worth it here... my enhancing skill is capped when I say this, so my Phalanx is no joke; take my word for it, no matter how good you think your Phalanx is, it's not worth it), I was able to re-sleep it in time.

As for the strategy itself... if you're RDM, its just a Sleep II --> Refresh whatever buffs you need --> Nuke --> Sleep II. Remember to always keep Refresh and Haste up, and keep stoneskin fresh. Same goes for Utsusemi; even if only one shadow is gone, it's not worth taking the risk, so just recast it anyway. Assuming you're subbing ninja, you might find it wise to pull Ose with gravity and begin the battle with the Ninjutsu that weakens it to the element you'll be nuking with. Blind, Slow, and Paralyze never hurt, but they wear off rather quickly, and may end up taking more MP than they're worth. If you're not subbing Ninja, I wish you the best of luck; you won't be able to rely on Blink to cover your rear, and Phalanx and Stoneskin can only take so many hits. However, it IS doable... just takes a different line of preparation (which, to specify, I'm not familiar with). If you aren't RDM at all, and instead are soloing this as a Ninja... you're going to want to be really careful, and it might be useful to pay off a nearby whm that's lvling to keep Haste up on you. But, regardless of what you come as, have Echo Drops and Remedies with you, or somone that can do Silena or Paralyna at a moment's notice.

In conclusion, this NM is indeed soloable by RDMs under 70 (only tested his sleepability at 67), assuming you're properly prepared. Should you need to convert, make sure you've just slept him, or if you used Sleep I, refresh it by piling Sleep II on top. You really don't want Ose waking then. If you do need to heal (and you probably will... nukes munch MP fast without Conserve MP to help out), stand a decent distance back from Ose, and keep him gravitied. This way, when he does awake, you can quickly jump to your feet and re-sleep him before he's gone through all of your shadows. I was able to get about 200-250 MP recovered from each resting period (i.e. before he woke up and I had to re-sleep him).

I hope this has helped you to better understand Ose as a NM, and what your fight with him will probably be like. He has a lot of HP, and with the SRN method (Sleep, Rebuff, Nuke), this will probably take you between 30 minutes and an hour. Chainspell will save your butt if something goes wrong, but you can only do that once the entire fight... so don't get careless. Happy Ose hunting, and best of luck with obtaining your Assault Jerkin.

I have killed this with one pt, it was Pld(me), Drk, Whm, Blm, Rdm, Thf. I tanked and the Rdm kept the silence nd paralize off me. Drk and Thf just skill chained and it was over after a while, roughly 15 mins. Alot of people were watching us too. Afterwards we lotted and i eneded up getting it. Cant waitto use this in ballista ^^

Question does the +18 attack on this add to ranged attack, or just to melee.

I'm a 65 DRG on Quet. and my LS helped me camp Ose and we got the drop on the first try. I was one of the lowest member of the party. the make up was:
65 DRG/WAR, 71 PLD/WAR, 71BRD/WHM, 70 BLM/WHM, 71 THF/NIN, ?? SMN/WHM. I can't remember the LVL on the SMN. >.< Sorry. but yeah, needless to say, he wasn't overly hard, but you'll DEFFINATELY want to bring along SOMEONE with Frost, or SOMETHING to slow him down. he can REALLY be a prick to hit, and I'm packin' +37 Accuracy at 65. THF had a bit of trouble at first, but not after Frost hit it. But yeah, I'm stoked for 67 now! WOOT!
Thank you MSS!! -_^

Suck it, Ose!!

In probably my last trip to Onzozo (almost to 64) he spawned. Killed him w/ the other group. I ended up lotting a (whopping) 171 for the jerkin, and through a combination of people not lotting who won't/couldn't use it, people with worse lots than me (I beat 2 others), and generic begging and pleading, I got the jerkin.

So sweet. Now I have something nice to look forward to.

thats current,, he/she might have other jobs.
#REDACTED, Posted: Nov 17 2004 at 3:17 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I'm a lvl 75 RDM/NIN, I don't care if you're a Dragoon in desperate need of equipment because Dragoon melee sucks, or you're a warrior that probably won't make a great amount of damage until the lvl 70's. I would want this for myself so I can solo HNM or to make farming a lot easier. Maybe I'll want Optical Hat for my NIN and this Jerkin would improve my melee when it comes to fighting...RDM melee needs all the help they can get when soloing, we hit like wussies, I hit as hard as a PLD or a Thief, but Thiefs have SATA and PLD is a meat shield anyways.

Why did you even say that? Drg melee doesnt suck first off and second off, there was no point of you bringing something like that up cause it had nothing to do with anything. Rate down for being a jackass

I guess you missunderstood, some one was complaining they lost the lot and they were mad because their equipment stinks and they wanted it bad. I could careless how much gil you make or what equipment you wear, if I win the lot, I'm making use of this armor regardless of what use you have. By the way, I still think DRG sucks balls, and many people do too, I posted this long before they fixed DRG 2-hour, so DRG has improved, back then a Bomb Toss would bleed the Wyvern away and make DRG 2-hour useless. They sucked a lot, that is why there was always like 4 lvl 75 DRG online in a server. I know 3 people who lvl DRG main that changed and never used DRG again because honestly, it sucked. Now that they have improved, they are OK. But even for KS30 Desert Swarm, Kirin, or whatever...I will choose every other melee over DRG any time of the day, you don't like it? ***** you, it's my opinion and many others. I bet by now you're not even a DRG anymore. BLU SAM WAR DRK RNG MNK > DRG even after update :P

I got to Onzozo with a pt and the NM spawned very near, we formed alliance with one other pt because I was tank but PLD (62) and the other pt had also a PLD.

Basically is true, if u have PLD in ur pt as tank better form alliance. The thing hits hard and keeps silence and paralyse all the time, I got lucke the pt noticed and kept me clear so i could tank it, I tanked the all the fight and when the lot time came i loted aginst 11 ppl and gor a lucky vote of 945 (never in my life) and i got it... sweet

I am still trying to understand why jobs that it doesnt really help out.. ie pld, rdm, brd lot on this item. It does not help your job nor can you sell it in an AH or to a NPC. The only other reason I could see why a PLD would lot on this item is if they wanted it for soloing purposes.
#REDACTED, Posted: May 29 2005 at 4:01 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Um, damn man ever think somone might have a second job? I'm a pld, trying to get it now for my DRG.... already beat maat, but i still need this for Drg b4 i start leveling it more. I went to lot on a Jerkin when I ex'ped there as pld, lotted 875, everyone started yelling & i'm like wtf, bite me, i need it too... Drg's at 60... Well, the Drg in the party lotted 927 or something, hehe oh well. I'll get mine :D

I am a 62 RDM at the moment, and won the lot on this just yesterday while exp-ing near Ose's spawn area. People who say RDMs have no use for this need to step back and look at what a RDM does a lot toward end game. They're arguably the best soloer in the game (RDM/NIN usually) besides Beastmaster. This Assault Jerkin will really come in handy for soloing, which is why I even lotted on it in the first place.

Fought this thing like 4 times now. Exping with my static. Party consist of drk, drg, rdm, brd, whm, and nin(me). Everyone is 62 and killed it fairly easy.
Took a like 10 mins but never really in danger unless party doesn't notice that i get silenced or paralysed. - -;.....
So i'd say if u got a ninja tank u can take the nm if party works correctly together....but if anyother type of tank...m(_._)m form an alligance. Damn thing hits way too hard when blink was off. 200-300 ouch!!!!

Don't debuffs go through Utsusemi? In my point of view I would think that a PLD would have a better chance since if both got silenced, the PLD would survive longer than the NIN.
Never played NIN, but I would think that a NIN can't cast ninjutsu if they are silenced.

No offense to you Ninjas out there, but without utsusemi you take way to much damage. But anyway, this fight would be really hard without anyone subbing or that have WHM as main.

Getting paralyzed during provoke = dead party... most of the time.

If you don't have anyone at least /whm, you can't exp there regardless. So you wont have to worry about running into Ose ^^

Normal exp mobs there do the same attacks as ose (Chaotic Eye).

True ninja's can be silenced and also getting paralyzed hurts. That's why you need your party to ensure they remove it everytime you get debuffed by OSE.
Also true ninja take allots of damage but I doubt a pld taking damge form a mob like OSE is allot less than a ninja would take . I was getting hit for like 200+, no way a PLD can say they were'nt getting hit up to at least close to 200.
The difference between PLD and a NIN fighting OSE. Fight takes a long time. You will run out of MP while a ninja's spell last as long as he has tools. Plus evasions plays a big part.
But I never said a smart party with a PLD party couldn't take it. I'm just saying from all the times I seen or heard of parties with PLD as tank fighting OSE. Usally gets killed or are forced to form an alliance.

That may be so, but it may also not be.

I'm sure that some of the people lotting don't have another high-level job, and are just lotting for the sake of getting a rare item.

My story
# Aug 25 2004 at 3:35 PM Rating: Decent
Today was my first day to Onzozo, and I had spent the whole day there as a level 61 DRG leveling with a party who were all 62 except the thf that turned 63. We had gained about 20K exp and I had 130 exp tnl. I had to get off soon so I could get ready for work in little over an hour.

So the thf went out to pull the last Torama so I could level when she found OSE! She let the rest of us know and then she pulled a Torama to let me level. Once I did that there was much debate from the blm and whm as to if we could kill it. They didn't think we could. I argued that I've heard many parties 60-62 take him on succesfully with a bard in the party. We have a bard, so you see my logic, I really wanted the Assault Jerkin.

So we finally convinced the Japanese blm and everyone else that if it went bad we could just escape. The bard decided that it would be best to use Soul Voice.

So the thf pulled OSE, and we started fighting, the bard used Soul Voice and we killed him after 10 minutes of fighting!

I was able to lot on the Jerkin and get it! I think the bard ended up getting the Ose Whisker. But I was happy I got my Assault Jerkin.

A good way to end a party: get my level and get an awesome item!
No more purple DRG for me once I hit level 67

Just make sure you have a thief, that TH2 really helps the drops.

A ninja tank pt can do this np at lvl 63. PT makeup - DRG RDM RNG NIN THF WHM. High evasion is recomended for this fight. Same lvl pt should not attempt to take this with PLD tank, unless you have 2pt alliance.

I've fought this guy 17 times.

6 times while Exping
11 times with my LS hunting him

The key to winning this in the low levels is several things
1 ninja tank
or
1 BRD
2 BLM

You either need a low mantiance tank, or alot of fire power. DRKs, DRGs, THF, SAM, even some RNGS will have a hard time hitting this guy. Even with Eva down or gravity.

for a party in th elevel range of 62-66 - this will be a tank and mage battle mostly.

I even watch a two party alliance wipe to him because they only had one BLM between the two groups.

When my Ls hunted this jerkin for me (cause lame people kept lotting on it the few times I saw it exping) we kill it 10 times and never saw the jerkin, got it on the 11th kill. Ose is a 4-7 hours spawn....tends to be 5-5.5 though if parties are keeping the Tormas clear.

I dont doubt u did it with 1 PT... we got pretty far, but its hits were too high against our 61PLD. We had to call in another alliance.

hmm... *brings bard to Onzozo*

We got pretty far with 1 PT as did the PT next to us.

The PT next to us had it to 1/4 HP and their PLD died and it went to hell. We were a lower lvl PT, but our blink tank held out well. However, the WAR moved a little too much and I missed 2 SAnTA in a row, so aggro wasn't well placed and it went for the RDM. We Escaped, I called my lvl 70 RDM friend and my lvl 60 PLD. They came, we went back, killed him pretty cake. BLM died and PLD died after 2hr. RDM Chainspelled Aero III 5 times for 400 dmg a piece....it died before his Phalanx wore off.

Dropped Coerl Whisker and Jerkin...pretty nice. I got to fight him twice so I got 2 mugs too. 1500 and 2000 + 1100 for killing him...not too bad.

I defeated this with 1 party of 6 people level 62-64. The bard used Soul voice 2 hour and we won with plenty of MP to spare.
I got it!
