please S-E!! Please change the look of this ugly, ugly hat! This does not look like the ideal melee's badass super aweosme headgear. It looks like something i'd put on my lvl 12 blm in th dunes! Can you at least add in a new lvl 70 head peice that would serve as a substitute to this? Maybe some slightly varied stats but still around the same lvl as this? Besides, it's way too common, i see it everywhere, this whole game really is full of people that all wear the same damn armor, no one looks unique. So boring... CHANGE THE HAT!!!
Strikercloud slaps you. seriously when does fashion come to this game..... if you really dont like thelook dont get it honestly for something this badass i could care less what it looks like, for all i care it could look like my THF AF hat a BONNET!!!! lol
Its better to go on this run w/ members of your linkshell or just ppl you trust. There was a Blackmage named "Jonne" on the Ramuh sever, and he was an alliance leader. After we beat Hakutaku, he got the drop instantly, and d/c'd.
I had heard that the ??? is a instant repop so when our Ls headed there, we thought we would get the OH done first out of our list of event. But once we killed the NM we found out that the speculation, was false the ??? is still a 15 min respawn. This wasted a lot of our time, and hopefully it will save yours. The ??? isn't an instant respawn.
I did last night took about 20 min to kill. we had to wait for repop. not excat on time but i pretty sure it was around 15 min. so no to the best of my knowledge not an instant repop.
Whats with the gil buying/selling on this page? lol this item/topic has nothing to do with any of that >.> its a ex/rare item and id just buy the eyes as u can see the hat is well worth it ^^ id try to rush and get this hat, well thats just me :P
I don't know if they've changed it since you posted this, but it doesn't repop instantly. :/ I just finished killing the first of 7 with my alliance, and we're sitting here waiting. Ah well.
Here is a simple guide on how to obtain an Optical hat:
Please refer to www.ffxi-atlas.com for maps.
Step 1. Hktk. eye cluster
A Hakutaku eye cluster consists of 5 different types hakutaku eyes.
Each eye is dropped from a higher level hecteyes mob...
1: Burning hktk. eye: KRT "Thousand eyes" 60-62 Enter KRT and go to lower level (G-8).
2. Golden hktk. eye: Sea serpent grotto "Mindgazer" 66-69 Enter SSG from yhoator, follow left wall and fall off several ledges until you reach "Ornamented door". you can pull him off the ledge without having to go through door.
3. Damp hktk. eye: Ifrit's cauldron "Dodomeki" 63-69 These guys are all over the place, never in groups of more than 2... mostly at the first areas in the tunnels.
4. Earthen hktk. eye: Sea serpent grotto: "Blubber eyes" 55-58 Go past mythril door, there is about 3 spawns scattered and 3 more spawns further in.
5. Wooden hktk. eye: Den of rancor "Million eyes" 73-76 There are about 6 spawns right next to where you pop "Hakutaku"(figures).
I could have scraped up the money to buy most of the eyes, but hey how fun is buying you way thru the game? Here is how i soloed all the eyes, accept the Den of Rancor eye, as 72NIN.
With the correct gear most of these are pretty easy to solo as 70+NIN. Main weapon Wing Sword 2nd hand ********* +1,(Stun Katan). First engaged but not attacked, pulled by casting Jubaku(NIN paralize). Then Hojo(NIN slow), Kumari(NIN blind and Im shure I spelled that wrong as I am auto-trans *****.)Watch to see if spells wear and recast as necessary.
SAVE TP, here where the sword comes in. Stun Katans help but they never seem to land exactly when you need them, like -ga spells or when shadows down. I saved all my TP for -GA spell and flat blade(Stun sword WS)them.
Also dont forget elemental ninjitsu... Hey its DMG.
I first went after the easiest of the 2 eyes which are King Ranapars Tomb and Mythril Door SSG, These checked EP to me as 72NIN and were a breeze no sweat here.
3rd on the list is SSG ornate door. You can pull 1 down without haveing to actually go beyond the door. This eye might take a while to get as you have to wait 10+ min for respawn, but hey plenty of time to rest and regen HP and get 100TP.
4th is Ifrits Calulderon. This one was just a big pain in the *** for me. 2 Mijin Gakura and 3 Instant warps later I got the eye. Yes i actually waited that long to solo my eye from Ifrits. If you decide to fight the bombs the flat blade comes in handy. As long as they dont Self Destruct they are easy to kill.
Then 5th and Hardest Eye is Den of Rancore. HOw did I solo this one? easy. I didnt I made a Skill up PT and all of us got eyes :P
well that it there you have it. If you have any questions on Alexandir drop me a /tell.
excuse me, i dont know what i did to you, but i earn my money just like everyone else, through hard work, i have a iffy store of gil through crafting and playing for over a year, since the PC NA release so i would thank you to leave me alone, if you have a problem, please talk to me, dont flame me on a board, that just shows quite a bit of immaturity.
I don't really see how that's any of your business... Leave the fellow alone, he's not hurting you. And don't try to argue that gil buyers hurt the economy, as they are making use of money that was already in circulation, even it if it was banked on a seller's account somewhere.
your arguement shows an utter lack of understanding of basic in-game economy. For one thing, if the money is holed up in a gil seller's MH, it's not in circulation. It will sit there and rot away until somone buys it out of game. Second, the gil seller's use tactics which are both unfair to normal players in general and usually against the TOS in order to make their gil to begin with. Lastly, they selectively monopolize items and control their prices, making the price so high that almost no normal player would ever be able to buy the item unless they spend real money out of game to buy gil from them. That's how gil seller's mess up the economy.
Here's an actaul example. Archer's daggers selling for 20-40K. Then a gil seller gruop takes over the NM and uses dirty tactics to keep a near 100% monopoly over the drop. Next they jack the price up to 100K, an increase of 2.5x - 5x greater (and literally almost over night to boot). Now at this point some people will say that the price increase was natural inflation, whoever the suddeness of the increase is the first tip off that it wasnt', and the clincher I have coming up next. After a few months of this, the gruop decided to move on to a different NM (or quit altoghter i'm not sure). Anyway, the NM for archer's daggers was free for all again, and the AH was no longer being controled by a single entity. Within a week or two the price dropped back to around 40K (the pre- gil seller price).
So there you have it, succinct proof that gil sellers wreck it for the average joe.
Couldnt they have made it a helm or something? ~_~ Yeah look at me im a SAM with a mage's witch hat! hmm maybe i'll go as a samurai/witch for haloween this year ^_~
ok i just ready that post about getting 5-6 hats an hour... ok... lets do the math people... A) its a 15min re-pop time right? 15x4=60mins... so unless you can kill that thing in BAM secs... there is no way to attain anymore then 4 an hour even if you're god... i'd say 2 n hour is average..

The ultimate guide to obtaining the Optical hat.
Let's get started, first off the stats for this hat. Accuracy +10 Ranged Accuracy +10 Evasion +10 Level 70 [Head] All Races Rare/Ex
This fugly looking hat is sought after by all melee jobs. Obtaining this hat is by far an easy task. First off, you will need to hunt down 5 different Hakutaku eyes, which are located throughout the world. The eyes are not 100% drops and eyes range from level 50 to 75. These eyes cannot be purchased from AH, but can be purchased via bazaars ranging in price from 9K to 200K depending on the eye. Once all the eyes have been obtained you will need to fight a high level alchemist to craft them into a Hakutaku Eye Cluster. This cluster sells for 800K-1.5 mil sometimes in bazaars. With this cluster, you will now be able to spawn Hakutaku in Den of Rancor. Once you kill this NM, optical hat will be yours. The hat is a 100% drop.
The mobs that drop the eyes are black mage type mobs. They will cast spikes, -ga spells and ancient spells. There level range is 50-75 and are can be taken down with a decent PT setup. The drop rate for the eyes isn't too bad, an average of 1 eye per hr.
Golden Hakutaku Eye - This is located in Sea Serpent Grotto behind the Ornament Door. To get to the door, hug the left wall once you get into SSG. To get behind this door, you will need a Sahagin Key. This key can only be obtained via a separate quest in Norg. For details on the quest, http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshell/space/The+Sahagin+Key The key can only be used once, so you will need to get a key each time. the Golden Hakutaku Eye is dropped off Mindgazer. It's a level 65-70 mob and is surrounded by Sahagin's which link very easily. If you don't feel like completing the quest, it is possible to pull 1 Mindgazer. If you continue to hug the left wall, past the ornament door. You will reach a fishing pond. If you look up, 1 mindgazer spawns on the cliff. You can pull it down and kill, the spawn cycle is 15min.
Earthern Hakutaku Eye - This eye is also located in SSG, except its behind the mythil coin door. To get to this door, again, hug the left wall once entering SSG and you will reach a fishing pond. Examine the door to the north and trade it a mythril coin and the door should open. Follow the path and you will see 6 blubber eye spawns. The level 50-55 blubbereye is the easiest of all the eyes to kill. You just need to clear the area of crabs and sahagin.
Burning Hakutaku Eye - This is located in King Rampere's Tomb. To get to this location you will need to examine a ??? and be taken underground. You will need to sneak yourself before heading down because bat's will agro. This is a pretty easy eye to get to and the camp is safe. All the Thousand Eyes are located in one spot, so just camp in front and pick them off slowly as they spawn.
Damp Hakutaku Eye - This eye is located in Ifrit's Cauldron and is surrounded by bombs, bats and scorpions. Dodomeki is level 63-67 and isnt too difficult to get to. Ifriti's Cauldron have bombs that agro to magic and they have a huge range. I suggest your party bring invis powders and silent oils.
Wooden Hakutaku eye - The most difficult and toughest eye to get. Dropped off Million Eyes in Den of Rancor, this mob spawns at the same location where you fight Hakutaku for your optical hat. Million Eyes are level 73-75 [decent challenge to a lvl 75] and is surrounded by tonberries. To get to Den of Rancor, you will need to head through Temple of Uggalepih. Enter the Temple and hug the right wall. This will zone you back to the jungle. Follow the corner and go back into the Temple. Head south where you will find a door which is protected by Temple Guardian. He's a level 75 Doll, which isnt too hard, just make sure you stun when it does Melt Down.
If nobody already has the key item “Paintbrush of Souls,” you will have to get one. Luckily, it’s not too difficult to acquire, and you only need one for your entire party. The entrance level of the Temple of Uggalepih is filled with three kinds of tonberries: Cutters, Slashers and Harriers. The Tonberry Cutters periodically drop Uggalepih Keys, which is what you need. These are NOT coffer or chest keys, just “Uggalepih Keys.” Once you acquire one, you’ll want to go to F-7 of the first map. To get there from the front door of the temple, take a right (don’t go through the gate) at the bottom of the first stairs, follow that hallway through a couple of rooms until you have to turn north or south. Head north and follow that path straight until you come into a room with painting frames. Incidentally, you can complete the “A Question of Taste” quest in this room if you have reached that point in the quest.
In the NW corner of this room (down a little hallway), there is a locked door which needs an Uggalepih key (which, incidentally, will use up the key). Once in, you’ll find a room with a locked box and three books. Examine all the books until one drops a key. Use this key on the locked box and you will acquire the key item “Paintbrush of Souls.” Do not leave the room without acquiring the Paintbrush or you will have to get another key and do it again. Again, only one person needs the paintbrush. It is a permanent key item, however, and you will need it every time you ever need to go through the door to the Den of Rancor. (In short, it’s not a bad thing to have).
Ok, you know how have all 5 eyes. What now? You will need to find an alchemist with level 86 MINIMUM to make the cluster. The recipe is: Burning, Damp, Earthen, Golden, Wooden, Fiend Blood and a Light crystal. Be warned, a critical fail will cause you to loose all the eyes. Even with 100+3 alchemy there is still a 2-3% chance of failing. It it possible to HQ the cluster, but it's only animation and no special effects will be given to the NM or the hat.
Alright, you now have your cluster. Now bazaar it for 99 trillion gil and wait for an alliance to form. This part could take days, weeks or even months because Hakutaku IS NOT a cake walk. I don't recommonend you go with random people because problems will occur. It's best if you go with LS members. Hakutaku is a hecteye type mob and its very similiar to the mobs you have been killing eyes for. Except the NM itself has crazy evasion and defense. Head to Den of Rancor and head to H-8. You will see a ??? and you will trade your cluster and the NM will pop. K, now the actual battle.
Get everyone to gather in Jeuno and make sure all meele have sneak and invisible powders. I cannot stress this enough because it saves a lot of problems. I suggest you get a minimum of 2 Ninja tanks, 2-3 stunners, 2-3 mages and a few meele with /thf to keep hate on the ninja tanks. Pld cannot tank this thing, it will take too much damage from spells and AM and its a waste of MP for mages to heal. A stun order must be setup, a single -ga spell can take out tank and hit an alliance hard. Make sure you stun at the start because NM has been known to cast a -ga as soon as its spawned. Mages must be prepared to cast paralyna on tanks because he loves to spam it. Ninja tanks should be tanking it backwards, this prevents paralyze. Mnk's should not be meeling, they should be Chi-Blasting. Every other meele should be SATING onto 2 ninja tanks. Meele's should be attacking the mob from the side or behind, anyone facing the front of Haku will get paralyzed.
The NM area has 2-3 million eyes and 2 tonberries that spawn in the area. Have a separate tank and 2 meele to deal with addons. All meele should bring sushi. Or if your really lucky, bring a high level bst to move the addson for you. This fight can go wrong in a second. So stay calm and be prepared for anything. If something does go wrong, kite Hakutaku until alliance is ready to continue. Do not call for help on links because that will cause NM to go call for help mode as well. If alliance dies, Hakutaku will despawn and the cluster will be lost. Once Hakutaku is dead, Optical Hat will be yours. It's a 100% drop. Thank God. Get the alliance to heal up because the ??? will respawn 15min after Hakutaku has been killed.
Well that's about it, enjoy the hat and be the envy of all the noobs. If you get your cluster and cant seem to find an alliance, don't worry about it. You'll get your optical hat and when you do, you'll be screaming your head off. Good luck.
i think it actually looks cool but im prolly the only one cant wait to get it already have the cluster just waiting on my LS to go on another op hat run.
I can finnaly throw out sniper rings and get +STR rings /drool XD
To DrawnInward: Thank you for that quick little guide to where I can find em. Thank you thank you thank you. Was just wondering if all the rambling would turn into actual helpful info and BAM u got it, thank you! Im going to do it with friends now dangit!
After a long wait and a challenging road, I have finally obtained my Optical hat. We did this 7 times a few days ago and 5 times today. This hat is VERY worth the effort it takes to aquire. The stats are simply amazing and you notice a heck of a difference in your performance with it (unless you're a Rng going from War Beret +1 to this, then its only very slightly). I'm soooo happy about this. I also obtained (didn't know till later when I checked my inventory) a Vile Elixer +1 which will help out real nice against Maat :)
Fun hat, 18 people, 3 stunners, 7-12 min fight. RDM/DRKs for the win XD but as long as everyone focuses its a fairly easy fight. the ??? repops every 15 min. Have a bard, or a rdm/whm or someone focus on paralyna the main tank unless you know the trick to avoid hex eye ;D have fun with this
-18 person alliance, two ninjas, random melee a few BLMS. We had no trouble at all. Only one death in 11 fights -extra six people to kill anything around hakutaku that adds -DRK's set up a stun order and stun any -aga spells. -fight took us 10-13 minutes each time then you gotta wait 20 minutes for the ??? to repop. -as a DRK70 with everything short of Sniper+1's and a Peacok Charm i had an Incredibly tough time hitting this mob. -whoever above said they got 5-6 hats per hour is lying...its not possible.
