No. It's been replaced at this point by others. It's still absolutely spectacular but not THE best.

For SamSmn: i think Amanomurakumo only has one hidden effect...but the one i know about is that occasionally, it will do 2.5X as much damage on a hit...i think this can happen on a weapon skill as well...cuz Kratis (who has it) has done 3k damage+ with WSs... or so i've heard...

Well, let's see. Tachi: Kaiten gives you StoreTP+. About 7, I think. Don't know if it's variable. Like all Relic weapons, it has an unusually powerful critical hit (You can't mega-crit in a WS, however) which can appear in place of a normal critical hit.

Anyone interested in learning more should check out this link. This guy has already tested the amanomurakumo, seeing as how he has it and all. Plus, he speaks English. I'd figure that's a rare quality in people who have actually finished one of these relics ^_^.

in japanese mythology susanou was out on a task for his sister because he killed one of her temple maids. he came to a village and found out that a dragon yamato no orchi was eating the daughters of a village man and he was down to his last one. Susanou said he would kill the dragon if only he could marry the young woman the father agreed, susanou turned the girl into a comb and placed it in his hair. he then put out jugs of sake in the village out side of the gates (there were 8 cause the dragon had 8 heads) the dragon came down from the mountains and stuck his head through each of the gates to drink the sake. once the dragon was drunk susanou chopped off all 8 heads then chopped off the tails. in one of the tails he found the 3 teasures of japan amanomurakumo, a jewel and a mirrior, susanou then gave the sword to his sister amatersu the sun goddess. thats how the sword came to be and was supposed to be of the bronze age swords of japan like melbe said

The reason it looks this way is because this sword is actually not a katana at all.

Ama no mura kumo AKA Kusanagi no tsurugi

This is supposed to be the oldest legendary Nihon-to in existance. Therefore this thing was made long before there was the katana...and long before there was a "Japan" This thing is a "ken" or simple two bladed sword. Most likely this sword was Chinese or Taiwanese in origin and was said to belong to the first Japanese Emperor. I don't remember the legend well but I think he was supposed to be decended from the Sun god thus the "Ama no" which is "belonging to the sun". To me this thing is more like a "jian" taichi sword type.

So, even though its kind of "ugly" for a Dai-katana. Its no wonder why SE chose this to be their ultimate embodiment for it. This is Japan's Excalibur.

Sneak attack and trick attack only work with nonelemental weapons skills, which SAM is somewhat not the point of. It gives critical hits, and you can't score a critical hit with an elemental attack. The only two WS you guys have that aren't elemental are Tachi: Kagero (100) and Tachi: Hobaku (30). In theory, Tachi: Kaiten will be non-elemental as well (it is an ultimate WS, and supposedly adds another form of skillchain off Light), so perhaps it'll do the SATA damage? Other than that, I can't see any reason a SAM would sub THF.

small typo

you mean: "The only two WS' you guys have that ARE elemental are..."

Hobaku is lightning and I don't know Kagero.

Um, I'm pretty sure that EVERY Samurai weaponskill is NON-elemental. They can all be coupled with Sneak Attack for a critical Weaponskill.
Yes, they have elemental attributes, but this does not make them elemental weaponskills.

THF is the second most popular sub for Samurai for a reason, yanno, and is especially popular 60+, when Samurai have Tachi: Yukikaze, a particularly damaging WS.
It deals spike damage with SATA WS, rather than /WAR which has slightly better TP gain and higher DoT.

Edit: On topic, relic weaponskills repeat Light/Dark skillchains if used after one.
Example...
Tachi: Yukikaze, Tachi: Gekko (Fragmentation) Tachi: Kasha (Light) Tachi: Kaiten (Light again)

If so, it's possible for a Samurai (subbing DRG and using the AF helm, and store TP+ gear if you like) to do the following:

1: Build up 100% TP, Meditate and instantly use Yukikaze before meditate does anything.
2: Jump
3: @100%, Gekko, Fragmentation SC.
4: If timed right and jump landed, meditate will still be charging, High jump.
5: Tachi: Kasha @ 100%, Light
6: Icarus Wing
7: Tachi: Kaiten
8: Light

And, if you wish, build up another 100%, yukikaze, meikyo shisui, gekko, kasha, light, kaiten, Light again. >_>

Samurai = win.

SATA only works for thf

as sub SA is just a free crit, and TA only transfers hate of your next attack to the person infront of you, but SATA is ice cause of the damage you can do, its best to do it onto the tank XD

ACTUALLY, Samurai was originally designed by SE to be a tank.

No kidding.

Meditate is a moderate hate grabber. The additional damage dealt by skillchains also grab that much more hate. Third Eye completely dodges multi-hit WS and monster skills.

I sometimes pull hate off of Paladins, especially during TP burn parties. Weaponskills themselves grab hate in general--the damage only adds to that.

Before you spout off about another job, at least research it a little. :x

SAM arent meant to be a tank, press conferance with SE, they said SAM was a DD, not a tank.
#REDACTED, Posted: Feb 25 2006 at 11:45 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) That was kinda' rude, IMHO. That person wasn't trying to be an expert on SAM, just explaining their purpose in a party. I honestly don't see SAM being a tank, but I'd like to persue avenues of tankage outside PLD and NIN (since apparently no one accepts WAR as a tank anymore). Have you ever tanked with a SAM? Just what research have you done? Seen anyone tank with it? Why do you think SE intended SAM to be a tank? Because they have many ways to pull hate? A black mage can pull hate by over nuking, and he has a bit extra AGI obviously intended for emergency dodges. Does that make him a tank? Hell, I, as a DRG do my fair share of damage and often pull hate off the tank, and I can superjump to avoid mega damage attacks from the baddies... Does that make me a tank? Name a Job that doesn't have a couple of ways to build hate? In seriousness, I'm curious if there's something else to a SAM outside of a few hate grabbing techniques that could make it a potential tank. Or if you're just going off speculative data... and wanted to be rude. =P
RE: What's up with the weak Samurai Weapons
# Apr 16 2006 at 10:55 AM Rating: Decent
Song, I dont exactly see that as rude because it is true that many jobs in the past were considered tanks. Back in the day RDM/WAR and MNK/WAR were also used as tanks the only reason they dont anymore is because everyone accepts that only pld and nin can tank and dont have there defensive skills raised like guard etc.. Make a static with a friend with MNK/WAR, SAM/WAR, RDM/WAR from 1-75 gear for tanking and keep your skills up and you will see with the right gear and all defense skills up, the most unobvious jobs become less inpotent as main tanks ^.^ I mean heck even a DRK/WAR can tank if put together properly =D
RE: What's up with the weak Samurai Weapons
# Mar 07 2006 at 5:50 PM Rating: Decent
sam was meant to be a tank. thus the tp boost in body armor. The more damage that a sam is able to put out the more hate he will grab. +store tp and such effects will create more dot. Nin doesn't hold hate by voking and a couple debuffs, but because most of them stack str and attack in endgame, they are able to hold hate by adding to the overall dot of the party. Also the large amounts of enmity in samurai af wasn't meant to be sata'd onto the tank.

I think many people would welcome the idea of alternative tanks and alternative party setups.

Kusanagi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Kusanagi-no-tsurugi (草薙の剣) is a legendary Japanese sword as important to Japan's history as Excalibur is to Britain's. It is actually called Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi (天叢雲剣, lit. Sword of the heaven of the clustering clouds) but it is more popular to call it as Kusanagi ("Grasscutter" or more probably "sword of snake"). It may also be called Tsumugari no Tachi (都牟刈の太刀). The actual Kusanagi is likely to be a sword in the style of the Bronze Age which is typically double-edged, short and straight; very much different from the more recent Katana sabre style, which features typical curved single-edged blades. It may be wielded one or two handed.

The history of this sword extends into legend and it is one of the theory of how the sword came into being. The Japanese god, Susanoo encountered a grieving family headed by Ashi-Na-Zuchi in Izumo province. Upon inquiry, the elder told that his family was ravaged by the fearsome 8-headed serpent of Koshi who consumed seven of the family's eight daughters and the creature was coming for his final daughter, Kushi-Nada-Hime. Susanoo proceeded forward to investigate the creature, and after an abortive encounter he returned with a plan to defeat it. In return, he asked for Kushi-Nada-Hime's hand in marriage which was agreed. Transforming her temporarily into a comb to have her company during the battle, he detailed his plan.
He instructed the preparation of 8 vats of sake (rice wine) to be put on individual platforms positioned behind a fence with 8 gates. The monster took the bait and put each of its heads through each of the gates. With the necessary distraction provided, Susanoo attacked and slew the beast. He decapitated each of the heads and then proceeded to the tails. In the fourth tail, he discovered a great sword inside the body of the dragon which he called Murakumo-No-Tsurugi (lit. Sword of the heaven of the clustering clouds) which he presented to the goddess, Amaterasu to settle an old grievance.
Generations later in the reign of the 12th emperor, Keiko, the sword was given to the great warrior, Yamato-Takeru as part of a pair of gifts given by his aunt, Yamato-Hime the Shrine Maiden of Ise, to protect her nephew in times of peril.
These gifts came in handy when Yamato-Takeru was lured onto an open grassland during a hunting expedition by a treacherous warlord. The lord had fiery arrows fired to ignite the grass to trap Yamato-Takeru in the field and have him burn to death and killed the warrior's horse to prevent his escape. Desperately, Yamato-Takeru used Murakakumo-No-Tsurugi to cut back the grass to remove fuel from the fire, but in doing so, he discovered that the sword enabled him to control the wind around to make it move in the direction he swung. Taking advantage of the magic, Yamato-Takeru used his other gift, fire strikers, to enlarge the fire in the direction of the lord and his men and used the winds controlled by the sword to sweep the blaze toward them to kill them. In triumph, Yamato-Takeru renamed Murakumo-No-Tsurugi as Kusanagi (Grasscutter) to commemorate his narrow escape and victory.
Eventually, Yamato-Takeru married and fell in battle with a monster after ignoring his wife's advice to take Kusanagi with him. While this is the most popular theory of Kusanagi's name, researchers agree that this is most likely false. In the ancient Japanese language, kusa meant sword' and nagi meant snake. Kusanagi therefore meant sword of snake.
[edit]
Present State of Kusanagi

In historical times, the emperor possessed a real sword with this name but in 688, it was removed from the palace to Atsuta Shrine after the sword was blamed for causing illness to Emperor Temmu. Along with the jewel and the mirror, it is one of the three imperial regalia which is currently placed in Atsuta shrine. Two theories are suggested on its present state.
[edit]
Atsuta Theory
This theory suggests that as according to various records, it has never been moved from Atsuta Shrine still stored in the secret location. It is recorded that during Edo period, a Shinto priest claims to have seen the sword. According to him, the sword was about 84cm long, shaped like Calamus, in white metalic color, and well maintained. Another record claims that this priest had died from the curse and the power of sword but this is most likely to be a story spread to emphasize its power.
In the 20th century, NHK had conducted a research of ancient history, and as a part of it went to Atsuta Shrine to videotape its image. However, Atsuta Shrine declined to show but did not deny that it had the sword. This theory claims that the sword has decayed over time and is in a poor state.
[edit]
Replica Theory
This theory suggests that the current Kusanagi is actually a replica of the original. There are several possible reasons for this. In the Battle of Dan-no-ura, a naval battle that ended in the defeat of the Heike clan forces and the child Emperor Antoku at the hands of Minamoto no *********** the sword was lost at sea. Upon hearing of the Navy's defeat, the Emperor's grandmother led the Emperor and his entourage to commit suicide by drowning in the waters of the strait along with three important artifacts which included Kusanagi. Although the Minamoto troop managed to stop a handful of them and recovered two of the three items of the Emperor, Kusanagi was said to have been never found. According to various historical records, the 10th Emperor, Sujin, is reported to have ordered the fashioning of a replica of Kusanagi. However, this was information was only made public after it was known that the sword was stolen. The Imperial Household claimed that it was the replica which was stolen, but it is just as likely that the replica was made after the fact to cover for the irrecoverable sword. The sword was stolen again, in the 6th century, by a Chinese monk. However, it was reported that his ship sank at sea, and that the sword washed back to the shore by Ise, where it was recovered by Shinto priests. The current sword could be as many as three times removed from the original.
It is recorded that Emperor Jito was handed a mirror and a sword by Inbe clan who headed Ise Shrine and these are two same items of the Imperial regalia. This theory's biggest obstacle is that as the embodiment of kami, not even the emperor could carry the sword at will without a formal ceremony and there is no record at Atsuta Shrine that suggest such ceremony was held. Also, the sword Emperor Jito received is actually Sugari no Ontachi (須賀利御太刀) which is made on every ascension of the emperor and the mirror is a different piece made for the same reason.
