This is the sword for adventurers who have chosen the path of the holy paladins to celebrate their achievement of reaching the mid/intermediate level. A good keep and a preparation for the Honor Sword.
Paladins, this is the sword you should be taking to your 40-capped CoP missions.
Of the swords equippable by PLDs level 40 and below, only the War Sword has a higher DPS, and only by 0.04--hardly enough to justify giving up +Enmity, which is a very rare stat for equipment at this level.
Seems like it's a bargain on most servers too, consistently less than 10,000 gil. There's nothing not to like about the Grudge Sword.
I'm glad they added this sword, I wanna see what good +Emnity does. I already am noticing a trend in much more damage and weapon skills being thrown out every round now that I'm past level 35, with a ton more efficiency than previous levels.
That being said, tanking becomes quite a bigger task than simply using provoke every 30 seconds with a shield break thrown in. This isn't to say I don't know how to manipulate the hate like nobodies business, I still do my job great (SATA Viper bite off another person in the party and the mob doesn't even sneeze at them) but the MP gets burnt relatively fast in order to keep everything flowing.
Plus, it gives me a chance to sample the whole +Emnity experience that will come from the AF and mer rings later on down the road. I'm pretty excited for level 39. ^^
The only reason that i got this sword was to keep up with the Rangers in my static PT (yes there are two of them). it actually makes a big differece especially when trying to keep hate between two rangers firing off everything all the time.
Where do these swords come from? Quest? BCNM fight? Chests? They're rare so I'd wager they're not crafted. I save money by questing for things whenever I can.
Price history on garuda shows mostly 40k. There are 8 up on auction right now, so maybe i can push that down a little. In about 10 minutes,i'll have a brand spankin' new grudge sword :) Even though im only leve 38 :(
I bought this sword before it was even posted here and the price was 120k. Last i checked the price went down to 40k. Gah!!! My moneys!! ANyways just thought you should know price seems to be dropping or else its just my servers economy.
Any decent pld shouldnt need this, but when it comes to enmity, overkill is not a bad thing, it gives the dmg dealers room to experiment, and gives you some laxing time. But +1 isnt a real geat help, but it is something. Try keeping hate against Two SA.WS warriors, a SA Jinpu SAM and a barrage, WS Ranger, with no refresh, and tell me how good you do. By the way they do their WS all at the same time, against your will. Then to top things off The BLM elemental seals and uses freeze for 890 dmg, guess whose the tank now.
The one real use I can see for this sword is BCNM40. I play BRD and the PLD has a really tough time getting the mandys off me near the end. He'll run up, flash, sentinel (or berserk), cure 3, provoke, shield bash, red lotus AND the monk backhands the mandy and it's *still* on me. Anything to help pull the enmity onto the PLD so he can draw the little guy out of range of my sleeps is a godsend. The PLD in our group wants to get one of these and see how it helps. I'll post results if he does.
Um..not really. i can't see any real point in +enmity at L39 unless you're a crappy paladin, because noone has anything that can really take hate from you at that level. sure, it would be nice between Cent's and AF, but the VIT and MND boost on the AF sword is much better IMO.
U don't have to be a crappy pld to want this sword. Think about the reasons to get this sword... First, it is lvl 39, meaning you can keep it for BCNM 40, you can't use Honor Sword for that fight Second, Before 42 you have two options for swords really, Hunting Sword, and Grudge Sword. Might as well go with the one that gives you enimity, they both cost within 10k of eachother on my server Third, the Honor Sword isn't until lvl 42 anyway, why not get this til 42, then decide what you like better. Lastly, why not give you that extra little bit of help, the enimity will make it so the dd's can go a little harder on the mob and still not get hate...
True, +enmity at this lvl is sort of unnessesary if you are half decent, but I mean come on, with items like this and a mermaid ring I can multitask while I am tank... think of the possibilies... a) doing shots of jack with roomates b) making stupid posts like this one c) doing shots of jack with my dog d) cooking hot pockets e) doing shots of jack with your dog f) shooting up (tying the tuirnicate requires 2 hands)
Just a few possibilites but you catch my drift... makes tanking easier in general.
I rarelly post on here- but... I actually read something that caught my eye...
I dont have a problem keeping my hate... someone said the following:
"Rangers. You fund me a PLD that can keep hate every battle 100% of the time with a ranger, I'll show you a broken ranger. "
A paladin should keep the hate off the ranger, work the hate tools and ur good to go (with refresh, it should rock quite nicelly.) and the ranger isnt broken if the pld can keep the hate off, that means the ranger isnt suicidal =) I mean yah sure, a ranger can start the fight with 300% tp, pull with unlimited shot sidewinder Cp arrow or Cannon shell slug shot... bring the monster to the party... berserk, Sharp shot, Barrage, shoot another couple times, sidewinder or slug again, and then EES... But smart rangers dont like dieing, so they hold back some, just enough. so if the paladin holds hate 100% of the time, then that ranger is obviously not broken...
As for me, I personally dont like the sword, sure its good for bcnm40, but then again-- if im only going to buy it for bcnm, might as well save the gil, because im doing BCNM for gil (well and its fun to...) Ive ran a lot of balgas dias bcnm40 and its totally not needed. Id rather use the gil to buy good, a hi either, and a some drinks.
(If your buying the sword for enimity... and your not being restricted in lvl-- id buy the mermaid ring, and get the AF armor--- cant use them for bcnm40, but u can use the ring for bcnm50 and the armor for 60+)
I am that paladin. Hands down with my lineup of skills and Items I have NO PROBLEM keeping hate no matter what combination of jobs. ESP if I have a war and thf in the party. War does first voke, THF does a quick SATA right before I Voke + Shield Bash + Flash + Cure2. I know a lot of paladins on my server that just cant do the job like me and I know quite a few who can, and when I am leveling other jobs I fully EXPECT other paladins to hold the hate just like I can. If they cant do the job, they should stick to WAR.
...Or maybe I just expect a level of perfection from my tanks (and myself) that just not everyone can live up to. If you are around lvl 41-43 on the Odin server send me a /tell and I will show you whats up.
one thing your forgetting-the most important part of keeping a monster's attention is not how much enmity the main tank gets. It's how much the damage dealers {monks, dark knights, black mages and rangers} let him get...I don't care how good you are, what your "skill lineup" is, if the damage dealers start spamming there damage, your gonna be scrambling to keep agro.
Thats why a sword like this is good. Because, while you may be a kick-***, best-ever paladin, your party may not yet understand that you holding agro is a good thing...I don't use swords predomantly-personally, I didn't like paladin, not enough damage for me, but hey- but if i did, this would be one i'd stick with for awhile. If only because i can't speak for the skill of my party.
the one thing your forgetting is-- DD can try their hardest to take hate but they shouldnt be doing that unless the party strat calls for. And if the strat calls for a DD member (or any pt member for that matter) to take hate, then you dont need this sword anyway.
lets look at it from an exp point of view- because this sword has no application in HNM tanking (we will look at it from a BC stand point later)
-- granted it is possible for a ranger to start the fight with: Sharpshot to Weaponskill + Barrage + EES + 2 regular attacks + Weaponskill + Icarus Wing + Weaponskill and yes they will take hate from that- but-- they wont be able to do that consitantly due to timers. Even if they could, the Grudge sword wont be able to help there. (also, the PLD could just 2hr and get the hate back anyway)
now- at these levels, WS FFA isnt recomended, so people go for SC. (FFA means free for all, which for those who dont know this, it means to not use SC, and just use TP when 100%) So if the party is going for weaponskill, the pt usually has to wait for 2 members to get TP, which is generally enough time for the PLD to generate enough hate, that this sword (once again doesnt matter)
For the usable level of this weapon, the PLD wont have defender, so a PLD makes a lot of his hate via DoT. (Granted a PLD doesnt do very much DoT, it still makes decent hate when you combine it with their other tools) This sword does not have very good DoT.
Also since PLD doesnt have defender, they take a considerable amount of DMG- so Vit and defence is very important in minimizing Downtime. Honor Sword has vit on it, and even though its very small, the Vit matters- so in this case, DoT isnt as important, as it calls for less healing.
Now, if the PT has a thief in the party, then the PLD is definatelly getting SATA. If this is the case, the 1 enmity is not needed.
--this sword goes for 5-10k on Caitsith... there is a reason why... anyone who buys it, quickly dumps it for Honor Sword and magician's tactians sword--
now in the case of BC- I dont know of a single BC that uses this- if it was to be used, it would be a BCNM40. For these, PLD doesnt tank much. Its either sleep mobs- and the PLD peals, or the PLD goes as DD with support healing.
Sure the sword is good for 2 levels, but those 2 levels go by so fast, that its basically pointless to bother buying it unless you bought it early and dont mind trying to repost it on AH for 4 weeks. (also when the gain from this weapon vs normal swords is insignificant)
I agree with this post. No matter how good you are and yes I use the thief's sata(when avail) and bash/flash/cure2 to get a ton of hate on me, you still will lose it when the other damage dealers go nuke crazy on the target or throw a cure 3. Every little bit helps so I will take the +1 enmity. I would still trade off the AF Honor sword depending on the party.
Someone throws a cure 3 you should smack them because you as the pld should throw it or have spent the mp to handle it. Hate isn't an issues if ppl let you get it. I don't like the hate stealing mages, so i just went from 25-30 without a real mage in kazham. Brd's ballad and juice gives pld all the mp they need for mandies in the jungle. I start fight wearing astrals and berserk(when i hit 30). Use the mp then switch to vit rings giving me an extra 50 hp to get hate with at the cost of no extra mp.
*on topic* I like the cent sword, and the strider sword agi looks nice; however, i'll probably go for this one mainly to hit for more than 0 dmg.
Strider's Sword is nice! I currently use it with a lot of other agility/vitality gear at lvl 38. I'm trying to research this grudge sword, to see if it will help me any when I reach 39. Will +3 agility from strider's sword give me that much more evasions/parrys/shield blocks to surpass a +1 enmity? I'm not sure yet. Let me get a parser up and running. Lvl 38 PLD - currently EDIT Agi+15/Vit+12 without food Unequipping all my agility gear, for non stat boost gear, I definitely notice getting hit a lot more. I cannot say how much as of yet.
Also, from earlier in this thread-- why rip on PLD's that may want to use this gear? I don't run in a static pt, and to tell you the truth, I cannot always keep 100% aggro in every situation, especially when the pt has just formed, and we're still in the "getting to know you" phase. If a +1 enmity allows the spellcasters one more nuke, or allows me to regain aggro from a rangers barrage faster (or not lose it at all), this will be worth it. And for the PLD who always keeps aggro- do you wonder if your parties are doing all they can to defeat mobs? What if your ranger could stand to do a bit more dmg, or your blm's should be casting a few more spells? Never know, will ya.
