using NasciaKujata's (thx) info on his stats for it, I have come up with how this works.

Max Stats:
Def: 7 MP +25

Def is raised by 1 every 10 levels.
20=2 30=3 40=4 50=5 60=6 70=7 75=7

MP is raised by 2 MP every 5 levels.
20=3 25=5 30=7 35=9 40=11 45=13 50=15 55=17 60=19 65=21 70-23 75=25 MP

Because Nascia said he didn't get a MP or DEF at 66, this is the only way i could see this working.

Hope this helps.
Obvious

My friend (whom has one) says that its stats change depending on your sub (whm/blm/smn = mp, mnk/war/thf/drg/nin/sam/rng/brd/bst = def, pld/drk/rdm = both)

He might be pulling my leg though..
Useless
# Sep 08 2004 at 1:03 PM Rating: Decent
This thing seems useless unless you know what can trigger its hidden effect. By looking at it, I'm sure you can somehow make it increase in DEF and MP under the right conditions. I wonder what it is...

There's a tilde ( ~ ) after the numbers for defence and MP. This must be the reason for the name "Variable Cape". The tilde is generally used to symbolize "approximately equal to". So there must be some sort of hidden conditions to make the numbers change.

Interesting to say the least :D

I've heard others say that a tilde (~) in FFXI typically means "or more". If true, the stats on this item would be:
- DEF: 2 or more
- MP: +3 or more

(Even the minimum of DEF:2 MP+3 makes for a nice item.)
Can anyone confirm this ?

From what I heard (can't confirm) if there's a(~) on an item, it raises as your level raises.

I don't see any reason for this cape. You're better off just getting a Mist Silk to hold you over until 32. +1 MND is infinitely more useful than +3 MP (even for BLMs, who likely have a WHM sub at that level anyway) and it's an extra DEF to boot.
This comes from Garrison

Looks like a decent early level cape for mages. Anyone know what drops it?
