How noticeable is the added damage (when latent is in effect of course) on this sword? As a rdm with Duelist Chapeu to offset the mp drain I'm wondering if this is worth main-handing with joytoy offhand until I can get my justice sword, or if I should just stick with a dagger (misericorde atm until my blau drops) for evisceration.

I would buy one to test for myself but uh, I already have a martial analece and a guesepeire that I'm having trouble unloading >.< don't really want another inventory -1 sword if that's what this will be.
very nice for corsair
# Feb 10 2008 at 10:57 AM Rating: Default
got it for my cor awile ago

with evokers roll and some small amounts of mp can keep the effect up easy

and proly the most pirate looking sword you get as corsair ><
also nice for if you want to be a joytoy cor and have no joytoy XD

Any job / DNC can now use this without worry, Aspir Samba is more than enough to counter the MP sap, the mob your fighting has to have MP though heh

My girlfriend uses it when she knows she is not in party and not main healer, like solo or skill up. For the rest, gold sword has the highest damage and she uses that (after the awesome enhancing sword).
Blue sword
# Jun 30 2006 at 5:11 PM Rating: Decent
Very good sword for a blue mage since best ya going to get up there and only better thing is if exicaliber is blue used in the later patches, but only better thing is Shiva's Sholet
Can be useful
# Jan 23 2006 at 2:25 AM Rating: Decent
The sword isn't too bad. If your Phalanx causes you to take 0 damage, then it is a decent farming sword. You can Convert by the time it drains your MP even with casting all your buffs.

Another way you can use it is to use the disengage/engage trick so it only drains when you attack and not when you're idle between swings. You lose claim on mobs doing this solo though, so use with caution.

in order to use this a rdm, and still have a little refresh ud need:

/smn
vermillion cloak
cast refresh on ureself

hmmm most rdms dont level smn but atleast its doable, but then again, ure getting extra dmg and dex +5 for giving up your sub. you could just sub a melee job for all that and get the dex + and dmg. also get ready to empty your piggy bank for the vermy, cuz it aint gunna be cheap(i avoid putting the prices online to spare the untouched servers) ok so all this to be able to have dex +5 and some decent dmg... seriously if your a rdm and thinking about this sword. stop. think about the gain/losses. and then spend ure money on something else. even for a farming toy this thing sux for rdm.

Actually there is a way for rdms to have the sword with a little Refresh recovery.

Rdms could...

-Sub Smn for Auto-Refresh.

-Get that lvl 75 piece of gear, starts with a D... hmmm Dalmacia, meh something like that.

-Then the rdm could equip their Relic Hat, which has the Auto Refresh on it.

-Then of course they cast Refresh on themself.

The total refresh would be 6 Mp/3 secs, which would mean, youd be gain 2 mp/3 secs.

Of course this is a LOT of work x.x but its still doable for the crazy rdms out there.
RDM/BRD to counter the MP drain?

What about going RDM/BRD to counter the MP drain effect this has. RDM Refresh and BRD Ballad should at the very least counter the 4MP/tick drain. Tarutaru pull off this combo the best due to their naturally high MP pool but I have tried it out myself in some XP partys and it works really well. A lot of people look at you like your crazy when you suggest it but when you can slap Madrigal or Minuet on the melee and Refresh/Ballad on the mages they tend to forget about their earlier doubts.

I used this setup a few times in Boyhada Tree fighting the higher level crawlers and it worked really well. I find that there are certain party setups this works best with. The one I found that works best is: RDM/BRD, RDM(BLM)/WHM, NIN/WAR, MNK/WAR, WAR/NIN, THF/NIN. Only 2 jobs needing Refresh and one of them was me. The melee will either want Madrigal or Minuet, since they can only have 1 song, depending on what equipment and food setups they use. We were getting consistant chain 5 and only used Convert a couple times. MP was almost always above 50% except for a couple times.

I'm gonna try this in 1 more level when I can equip this weapon. Unless somebody else wants to beat me to it.

Party on.

I've tried the RDM with refresh part, and yes, it suts down the mp drain to 1 MP per second, but not with bard....but I'm thinking you're correct, it would offset the draining mal-effect of the rune blade, making it a much better weapon when mp count is important (i.e. experience parties, NMs, crap like that) Dual-wielding, however, is a much different story ^.~

this is a nice looking sword and all and its kinda kool that a smn/blm/rdm can use it but the strange thing is that it has a hidden effect when in battle it has a de-refresh, takes out 4mp a tick. the latent effect isnt always on like some weapons, it only arrives if you are in orange or lower health, and theres a rumor that it gives -1 mp when healing, i havent tested that yet but im going to try that soon, so if your a mage type or a pld like me, this isnt the sword for you.

Both of these statements are incorrect. The latent has nothing to do with your hp. The latent effect is activated by having mp drained. If you don't have mp, you do not get the latent. As for the -1 mp while healing, no, it only drains your mp while you are "engaged" in battle with the weapon drawn. It does not affect resting.

Saw this at the AH...had been going for 175k but gradually decreasing. I tossed a bid in for 100k and got it. Went to Boyhada Tree to level NPC (who is now 51, yay!) and took notice of the mp drain. Thought I was going to have a coronary!

Even with Refresh, this drains 1mp per tick...and we are not talking about a slow tick...it's pretty constant. So, at the end of every EP battle I was pretty drained...not my kind of fun. Yes, the damage was nice, but I decided I'm going to try some alternate sword until I can get my Joyeuse.

Thankfully, my Gold Sword had yet to sell and I can use that for now. I'll be levelling dagger I suppose for more efficient use of my Misericorde in the interim.

But my advice...don't buy this sword unless you really don't rely on your mp pool or your can offset it with full mp refresh (4mp per tic).

The latent effect on this sword "costs" 4mp per "tick"...similar to how refresh "gains" 3mp per "tick". The latent effect is triggered as soon as you hit "Attack" whether you're hitting the monster or not.

The latent effect is triggered under the following conditions:

1. You have MP
2. You draw your weapon (hit "attack")

If you do not press "Attack", there is no MP drain.

Please note, if you use this with another Rune item, such as Rune Arrow, the MP "cost" DOES stack. I tried the Rune Blade & Rune Arrow combo and it drained 5MP per tick while I was engaged with the mob. Not good for a PLD!

Well I picked one of these up to try out as RDM75. Frankly I dont care for it seeing as it has the MP drain (4MP every 1sec? 3secs? something like that). It is however very powerful when the latent kicks in, giving Savage Blade a real whollop. Even with Refresh on your dropping 1MP per 1-3secs.

got mine from the strange machine in eldamine necropolis.
used ice chip, on a lightday, 43% waxing moon.
(also got 2 nuggets and 6 arrows that day)
i had doctor status, so no clusters ^^

on the sword:
its 4mp/3seconds, WHILE IN BATTLE.

pull weapon: no drain.
hit mob: starts to drain and better stats kick in.
disengage: stops drain, and bonus (easy to see with this ones's +5 dex)

photo has been sent in.
it's very yellow, almost gold in color.
its a sapara type (odd to see in a RDM's hands)
there are "runes" on the hilt and at the tip of the blade.
looks like a relic weapon.

Rune Blade and the Latent Effect..
# Aug 31 2005 at 8:39 AM Rating: Decent
Hey all Davidge here from Sylph server. I just piced up this sword for 270k and figured I would go try it out. Not know when the latent effect would kick in, I was thinking it could be like other effect and get my HP down in the yellow for it start. Well i soon realized that my MP was decreasing every swing of the sword. You lose about 2 mp per tic when this sword is drawn. Even with Refresh going! Now grant it.. I was hitting for something like 70 to 100 a hit and criticals were over 140, but the mp loss per fight on a EP was almost half my MP. Still trying to figure out if this sword is worth it for the MP loss..

DMG: 43 DEX + 5 Delay:236 this is unreal for only 300K! Just keeping refresh on negates the MP loss and I think that it worth it. This is an insanely strong sword for such a cheap price if you can handle the MP loss from not getting refresh. I think I'm going to buy it...

a friend of mine got a rune axe from the strange apparatus in crawlers nest she also said it drops a rune blade but i have wasted a good 200k trying to get this bad boy you need to get a blue chip from one of the 3 gobbies in the 3 nations there is ont in north sandy and one in windy walls i dont know where the one in bastok it.. and you also need an infinity core which are going for 1k on phoenix in AH under misc. the blue chip is 21k from these gobbies... you'll most likely get water clusters or rune arrows and sometimes cerment chunks but the blade is obviously ard to get GL to everyone please respond tell me if i'm right

Latent Effect

The Latent Effect on all of the 'rune' weapons is triggered when you have MP and the weapon is drawn. The hidden effect on the 'rune' weapons is that it drains MP, depending on which one it's either 3 or 4 mp per pulse. The rune weapon ONLY drains MP when the weapon is drawn.

I heard it's obtained one of two ways... Either it's an item that's in the belly of a rare fish (you fish the rare fish then take it to the guy who cuts them out and gives you whatever's inside) or it's through a strange apparatus... Which one it surely is, I don't know, I'm just sharing what I've heard. I'm sure a Vermillion Cloak on a Rdm/Smn would make this sword very, very nice...

RE: Seraph
# Mar 11 2005 at 1:37 AM Rating: Decent
It's quested.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the latent effect on ALL rune items is that it takes effect when you lose 1mp/s, which is also a hidden effect of the weapon, when you are engaged I think. So, once you run out of MP, the effect is gone.

At least that's what I've heard, I'd love to try it for myself.
please tell me how

Oh man, I'd really like to own this sword. Perfect for a SMN. With Auto-Refresh, as well as refresh spell, the latent effect would be nullified. ^^ Please please please post if you know exactly how to obtain this beauty. Thanks =D

Most(or all) rune weapons to make the lantent effect activate you must engange a target. While you have your weapon out if you have any mana the lantent effect will activate if you have none it the lantent effect won't activate.

It drains 3 or 4 mp per 3 secs while your weapon is out. I am not sure if the rune blade gives a auto fresh but if it was it will be 3(or2) mp drained per 3 sec instead of 4(or 3) per 3 secs.

Also does anyone know which one I can get the rune blade from? :)

It's frequently used by certain classes for the Maat fight (BRD is one), as after the latent kicks in it is truly a destructive sword (and the best-looking sword I've seen in 71 levels, by far.)

4mp/tick is steep, seriously... I owned one for a few days and ended up selling it back. I may pick one up later as it can definately be VERY useful, albeit situationally.
