Unlucky :(

Hi, I'm in the Fairy Server and I must say that I'm the unluckiest guy ever when it comes to traveler's mantle. I've so far killed 47 Spook on all kinds of moon (Full and New included), every single day (Lights and Dark included) and have yet to see this mantle.

I'm a 33 thf so I have TH1 but that doesn't seems to help.

Oh yeah, for those who says JPN players camp this things, you are quite bias. Most of the people that camp this thing when I camp are NA players. Usually from as low as 2 players camping to as high as 7 players.

OMG Algojo if you are telling the truth you are the unluckiest man alive, me and my LS kindof take over the zone sometimes, about 4 of us thfs with a fast pull skill (provo mostly, one has jump, Unicorn server) and we get about 1 drop an hour, I've sold 4 mantles myself, and have 1 to wear when I play a low lvl. I'm broke now mind you because I did gobby bag 4. But wow, I can't understand why you haven't gotten a drop yet if you have killed him 47 times, that just seems astronimical.

If there's only one way to acquire a valuable item, then the competition for the single source can only increase as the server population increases. That's basic suppliy and demand.

The problem isn't that people camp. that will happen whether or not it's for the drop, the quest or whatever random reason. The problem is that the drop is the bottleneck.

Make this item craftable and the camps vanish. The price doesn't even have to drop if it's difficult enough to make.

To the person who was trying to blame others in Sandoria, and also saying that it's hurting Sandorians in the long run because Sandoria is in third:

You have no idea how conquest works, do you? Last place makes signet last for 5 hours, whereas first place makes signet last for 1 hour. This is a balance feature the designers made. So while being in third is horrible for crafting because a lot of shops won't carry what you need, it's great for crystal farming.

camping and NM's
# Feb 10 2004 at 2:05 PM Rating: Default
I'm 27thi/18war (so I only really get 13 war). I camp this item because it's one of the few campable items I can solo. In addition, I don't just sit around all day waiting, I kill other things in the area for cash. Since i actually haven't gotten a drop yet (and I've killed it a good 10-12 times), the gold I'm earning from other things is a MAJOR benefit.

As for JP players camping, I have to admit, I hate to see lev 50's there, cause there's SO much else they could be camping (if I could take emporer, I'd so be going for hairpin). But on the same token, this IS a good item. And as for watching out for JP players and taking the mob, I think you had better watch out for me, and I'm NA ;). If it pops on my side of the tombstone, I'm getting it. I haven't missed so long as this has happened. It's all about provoke and macros. No one told me a maccy for it, I figured it out on my own, it's not really too hard.

Anyways, JP's have nothing over NA's when it comes to this item. Getting it's routine, and if you have war up to level 5, and some main job at least 15 or so(preferrably thief obviously), you've got just as good of a chance as anyone else.

I would have to agree that you do sound like someone who hasn't put a lot of effort into this game. There are much better ways to make gil if you actually play the game.

How much time have you spent trying to get this drop? I myself can pull off making 30 - 40k easily over a few days if I'm trying to, and 5-10k if i'm not - all that without camping any NM's whatsoever.

Yeah, I guess it is nice when you do get that item, as it is worth a lot. One day I hope to fight and earn this item, so that I can use it for my lower level jobs. However, until people stop camping it, I'll just have to wait.(I gave up trying to get it. The last time I was in the area and tried to fight it, someone started fighting it before it even appeared on my screen. It was most odd...)

A suggestion?

I dunno about the rest of you, but as a WHM, I'm used to helping people out.. A suggestion.. Team up? Lower levels can get in there and if you have provoke try and have everyone in the party who can use it to get the Spook. Lot for whatever drops, or give what you don't want to the person who helped you. I plan on doing this now that I have WAR as my second job class.

I have been trying to get this item for over a week now, but have only fought the monster once due to insane camping at that area. In fact, I have even been told to leave the area *during the day* while I was simply working on doing a quest there. I understand that people need money, but to threaten people over it in the game is pure BS.

I am a Thief, and desperatly need evasion, which is why I wanted this drop. However, due to people "farming" it, I cannot have this. It is no wonder San D'orians keep coming in last place on the conquest race each week on our server - the people are too greedy and care about nothing but themselves. Well, guess what, this game is designed for people to work together, and so this hurts everyone. Remember this when you are not getting crystals b/c I'm dying b/c I don't have high evasion b/c someone was too greedy.

I'm about ready to shout in San D'oria where this is, just to get back at those who threaten others over this item. Can you imagine their look when 50 people start camping there all the time? Maybe that would drive the price down?

#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 14 2004 at 1:42 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) what i cant stand is that the nm that have place holder or mobs certain mobs that do no t this one but there r others is that when u do all the work and a jp or another pl for that matter shows up just to steal ur spawn thats BS. i now i killed place holder for like 2 hours waiting on a certain spawn, and when it finaly does spawn some one who has done no work to get it to spawn comes and takes it is just wrong.it just seem like no one has values any more it a pain in the a$$.so if something has place holder do so work instead of just stoping by to steal the rare spawns.

I agree with alot of the people that have posted in these forums especially concerning NM farming. Certain players who have high expense jobs such as RNG or NIN or have played mages that spend all their Gil on spells, sometimes can't farm for reasons such as AMMO costing GIL or being too high a level to farm mobs anymore because soloing as a WHM is tedious compared to other heavy DMG melee classes. And after asking several Japanese friends about why they camp there the truth comes out: A large number of *** players camp there because it's easy to farm weak NM's especially away from new players in weaker zones. It is incredibly frustrating to simply want 1 or 2 NM drops to sell in the AH while you are attending your RL as some players actually do instead of farming 24/7 in an in-human way. I know many JA players and many NA players are better than myself, I don't hate them for it, but I do despise people that turn the game into an economic race. I mean isn't that what RL is for? =)

#3 If you dont have provoke you have less than 1% chance of getting it if a person there already camping it. Unless you have Dia(fastest spell i know of)
#4 JP's almost always get it, i dont know how i think its a macro they have. When i camped it it just appears i target it even before it on the screen press Provoke ASAP and nothing its already theirs

So if your alone there ur very lucky, wasted 2hrs for nothing =/, i agree they should make it rare and ex. so noone can trade or sell it. That way u will actually use it for your self. Hope Job-Related items arnt like that so i can actually get them =)

Just to let you people know I decided to camp this thing for a living recently and I am tired of all the complaining about how the JPs always come and "steal" it from you.

I don't know where the servers are but the 1-2 second lag that I always hear about is bull. I can almost always fight the spook once per night (out of 2-3 spawns) and I have NEVER been beaten by a JP player when I didn't ***** up first.

Use "Provoke"!!! Dia has a cast time and voke is instant. "Shadowbind" and "Charm" work just as well but require advanced jobs.

The Mantle is a very rare drop. I killed the Spook 30 times before I first saw it.

The fastest way to get it does not involve a macro

Please don't wait around the tomb for hours waiting for it to spawn. It first spawn is right after 20:00 so go farm until then (bat wings sell for 3k a stack and fangs go for 2k, why go home emptyhanded?) and the second spawn is between 23:30 and 0:30. The last spawn will only come if the second spawn was between 23:30 and 0:00 and is between 3:30 and 4:00.

If you need the root you can get it from other undead mobs or you can ask the person who killed the spook to give it to you (I usually just toss it if I get one) or you can buy one at the AH for 200 gil.

I have heard that JP get it faster since they see it a few seconds before NA players do. This is due to lag from the servers being in Japan.
Don't know if thats true or not but sounds like it might be.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 07 2004 at 2:21 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) What are you guys talking about, the game didn't make it a high-gil item, the players did. And plus, its like the real world, first come, first serve. In this case, first to attack it, gets it.

It does really suck when you sit there all day, then some high level JP Player runs in and takes the Spook from you. Had it happen to me multiple times.

It's a good source of income for anyone, hence the reason it's such a popular camp (sells for 25K currently on Ramuh). I'd think lvl 50+s could find something better to kill for money items.

I recommend getting on there when JP Players usually aren't on. I guarantee they'll show up every time if you don't. O_o

Whiny? I don't think ambients post was being whiny, but more along the lines of ... people that do nothing but farm sh*t for pretend cash rather than actually play the game are being pointless. this is the kind of garbage that ruines games, when emphasis is put on buying and selling the loot that is dropped instead of just using what you get, and getting only what you need.
In a personal note, people under the age of 17 shouldn't even play the game, as 99% of them do nothing but lead me into hopless death, and use so much cryptic "133+" speech that any intelligent player in the group has no chance of understanding wtf they are talking about anyhow. Thank god for message boards though, or social outcasts would never fully show the reasons they are social outcasts to begin with.

RE: whiney babies
# Jan 06 2004 at 4:49 PM Rating: Default
It has nothing to do with survival of the fittest. It's a matter of good design vs. bad design. If one mob drops a high-gil high-camp item, and also happens to drop an item required for someone's quest, that is bad design because by default nobody will ever complete that quest.

Also, whoever is saying "log on Midday when no JPs are on" is deluded. The JPs play 24/7 just like we do, and if the JPs aren't camping spook guess who is, the NAs.

Your best bet will be to learn how to use the translator and say this to the Japanese:

(help) (Luminicloth) (quest)

Same with the Americans. Since 99% of the campers are there for the mantle, most likely they will let you join and lot for the lumincloth (if rare/ex) if it drops. If Lumincloth sells too.. then you're just SOL until/if the mantle becomes no-sell.

Camping is an accepted part of MMORPGs, and game designers know this. They should endeavor to seperate quest items for low-level chars from drops which interest all manner of campers.

If you think camping Spook is bad.. just wait until it's your turn to look for Genkai items. Be ready to tear your hair out.

same thing happened to me
# Dec 19 2003 at 2:56 PM Rating: Decent
I was just trying to get the spook for the spatha quest and didn't even know about this mantel at the time. I was sitting there waiting for it to spawn when a high level ran in and one shot killed it. It sucks that there is a low level quest you need this mob for and high level people kill it every spawn.

The problem with this cape is that the same people camp it endlessly. The powers that be need to make it untradeable and unsellable in AH to cut down the ridiculous camping of it by the same people on each server with the intent to sell. Need before greed... no drop is a good way to do it.

The reason it sells so well is that it's really the only realitivly low lvl back slot item with a +# evasion. Furthermore, it's the only one I have seen that monks can equip. It is currently going for 10k on Bismarck... which makes me think people are insane to be honeset... it's a lvl 12 cape.

Also, on a note about respecting camping spots, I camped this cape for two cycles, and all four times it spawned, some lvl 50 guy ran in and provoked the spawn before I could get an attack in. My thoughts for you, if you want to get it, sign on midday when there aren't lvl 70 japanese players on that do nothing but sit and wait for it to pop so they can grab the cape to sell.

I really have mixed feelings on the idea of shared Japanese and NA servers. I think they should have a Japanese server and an American server that you have the option of joining. I'm sure the Japanese people wouldn't mind having their own server as well. Especially considering the fact that tehy have a year of head start on everyone.. it would be nice to start in an actual new economy with a new game.

RE: Why it sells..
# Jan 29 2004 at 5:12 PM Rating: Excellent
The price on items is not necessarily dependent on how good it is overall, but how good it is relative to the other options. For a level 12, this is a very good cape and probably worth the money if you have it to spend.

You should never go in to fight a monster with so much demand without a good method of pulling. Dia and Provoke are the two best in my opinion and can be gotten at extremely low levels. Just sub warrior or red/white mage and you will be able to pull it about as well as the high levels.

If you are a high level, you could still have low level jobs. Perhaps some japanese dont want to pay such a huge amount for a new cape for a job they are newly working on. You cannot assume they are doing this purely for profit, especially because at high levels you have many more opportunities to make much more money. Also remember that half the people that camp the monster are low to medium level, and are probably only one in ten of them actually want to use the cape.

It is sometimes not good having high level japanese around, but they have saved my life many times especially in Quifim. They are also very useful for harder quests and many are willing to help out anybody who can use auto-translate. I never would have gotten the beastmaster job without the help of a high level beastmaster to tame the kraken.

But you COULD be a lvl X whatever with a lvl 1 RDM subjob and get Dia... Although you may not have enough MP for it depending on your main job and race.
