these used to be my main source of money, as a nub (1k a shot and sold really quickly, it was awesome); however, nowadays, I just desynth these bad boys, and quickly becoming my main source of money again, just in a different way :P
Lots of misinformation about the desynth on these.
For starters, the desynth cap is 53, meaning that if you start desynthing these for skillup at ~51 Smithing, you'll get reasonable skillups. They won't be nearly as fast as a normal 'creation' synth, but they will come.
Next up, people attempting to desynth these on anything other than Lighteningsday, Lightsday and (to a lesser extent) Darksday are either a) wasting the time they took to farm them or b) wasting the gil they spent to buy them.
4 rules to desynthing for skillup/profit:
1) Be within 2 points of cap for skillups. 2) Desynth on Lightningsday/Lightsday for best results. 3) Face SW or W when desynthing. 4) Expect quite a few breaks.
With smithing @ 53, my best option for skillups is making Darksteel Sheets which, if I bought the Ingots by the stack at AH and didn't break *any* synths, would earn a 15-25k profit/stack, and they sell slowly. Farming the Backplates and desynthing them for Darksteel Ingots would take a lot longer than buying the ingots, but the only out-of-pocket expense would be the crystals to desynth them with. Right now, a stack of Darksteel Sheets sells on my server for 160-170k. Not fantastic profit given the time requirement, but certainly better than farming Beehive Chips :P
66 Smithing, and the results vary. Success rate is usually about 60%, and i've had Darksteel come out as much as 6/25, and as low as 0/25. It's sheer luck, but a good run can make you VERY rich, very fast.
Bronze and Iron is front-load material, and can be processed into other things, or just resold. My 51 THF's TH2 has about a 75% drop rate per Ameythsts.
Jury is still out whether it's best to just pick off the Amethyst, and move on, or clean out entire rooms for more repops
It's so true. I make huge trains in the lower two levels of Pal mines (like, every single quad), kill them all with a -ga or two, and get anywhere from 7-12 plates at a time. By the time I'm done desynthing them, the quads repop and repeat ^.^
I have swept those mines clean countless time in order to make money and I know for a fact that these only drop from Amythyst. Anyone who disagrees needs to get a screenshot of the text to back it up.
Until then, is it possible to get them to take Amber Quadav off of the list of mobs that drop these?

I rule Windy Sandy and Bastok AH with Quadav Backplates I farm and buy all the cheap basturds out. I make sure I make 1k each. TAKE OVER buy the low price moron and sell his back for 1k!
lol, you forgot the 'disinformation campaign' part where he told people that the backplates drop from more than just Amethyst.
Really... honestly, no ******** - ONLY Amethyst drop the backplates - both in Gustaberg and in Palborough for sure. Gone there many times with THF sub for treasure hunter, killed thousands of quadavs there, and only the Amethyst drop them.

Wrong. EVERY Quad on lvls 1-2 of the Pal Mines can drop these. I've been farming these for a LONG time, and I've gotten drops off of every Quadav on these floors. Please keep false information to yourself...Thank you.
OK, so we all know that Lightning Crystal + whatever is desynthesis right? And we all know that desynthing items desnt raise skill right? So what is the deal with the caps on desynthing these backplates?
Actually, you can skill on desynthesis. :3 From my experince though, it just takes longer, and the caps are much higher than synthing the actual item instead.

These used to go for 700, but now ppl dropped them way down to 500. :( I spent 6 hours farming these (I ran into the mines with just my sword and would farm these til my inventory was full). And now the market has dropped them down. Hopefully they'll be back to 700-900 in a few hours.
Woo i love quadav backplates, it's the best way to make money. Get 17 of these woo!!! easy 10k This is the best way to make cash because, the drops and mobs are easy at lvl 20. I've been doing this for 20 lvls. And until i reach lvl 40 i'm staying there. The only thing that is better then quadav backplate is quadav helm. So if you need quick cash. hunt backplates.
This can be seperated into Iron or Darksteel Ingots with a lightning crystal. I'm told it requires around Level 48 Smithing to reliably get Darksteel out of them, and I believe that's the +1 synth.
I sell these for 500 a pop. They sell also very fast. I tried to see for 600 and it didn't sell. If I go for Gil run, I usually go for this item. A sure sell in the AH, plus Turtles as I call them, also drop Gil / Shell Shield / or Crystals. By the way, this item is not so rare. I can go to pmines and get about 4 - 6 in 1 run. Also found in S & N Gust.
It is possible to combine a backplate with a lightning crystal, but I don't know what the end result is, what the skill needed to do it is, and what the skill level is to do it either. I just know it's possible.
You can get a Bronze Ingot, Iron Ingot, or Darksteel Ingot from Desynthing these. A friend of mine, bless her heart, desynths these for me whenever I can bring them to her. Her smithing skill is I think 63 (I'm not sure though), but a few get lost each batch, so I guess your skill has to be 70+. *Shrugs*
