A Defense of the DOMARUUUUUUUU

With the advent of the FotM SAM, this piece has sort of become a rallying point for identifying SAMs who don't know what they're doing. It's typically cheap and looks kind of neat, but it's massively inferior to Haubergeon for TPing, so bad SAMs who TP in this tend to stand out like sore thumbs.

However, I think the Hachiman Domaru itself kind of gets a bad rap that it doesn't totally deserve, thanks to this stigma. It's true that it's only a step above being naked while TPing, but it's actually comparable to Haubergeon for WS, and in some early 75 builds, wildly superior. Let me explain.

To start with, the offensive stats during a WS are comparable. -2 accuracy is not going to completely break you with the Y/G/K accuracy bonus, and the 10 attack of Haubergeon is generally understood to translate into less damage on those WSes than the 3 more STR of the Domaru. So that alone makes Domaru defensible as a WS piece, but the real strength is the Store TP.

I said this was a superior WS piece in "early" builds, because the necessity of a 6-hit Store TP build means SAMs don't really get a ton of gear flexibility until they get a Rajas Ring. Before Rajas, you need several pieces of Hachi gear to cover the gap, and for most people not using Shinimusha Haidate, this will mean full-timing Hachi Hands and Feet and Chiv Chain with 5/5 Store TP Merits.

What Domaru does is let you pull one of those pieces out during a WS, namely the gloves. Considering Pallas Bracers are extremely cheap and Alkys are no longer so expensive as to be unattainable, Haciman Domaru ultimately means somewhere between a +8 and +11 Strength bonus for a Rajas-less SAM. Since SAM WSing is basically all about stacking as much STR as possible, this is pretty significant.

So yeah. Domaru's a great starter WS piece for the SAM who just hit 75 and is starting to expand his WS gearswaps. It remains a TERRIBLE TP piece and it kind of falls by the wayside once you get a Rajas Ring, but it doesn't deserve the scorn heaped upon it.

not that this hasn't been said anywhere else...i just haven't seen it on many threads on allakhazam...but here's some #s to crunch
Futsuno Mitama- 8
Axe Grip- 3
Ifrit's Bow- 3
Maat's Cap- 7
Justice Torque- 5
Vampire Earring- 4
Vampire Earring- 4
Kirin's Osode- 10
Alkyoneus's Bracelets- 11
Flame Ring- 5
Flame Ring- 5
Smilodon Mantle+1- 5
Sultan's Belt- 10
Hachiryu Haidate- 10
Rutter Sabatons- 3
So...with gear alone...a samurai can get up to 93 STR+. With Ambrosia food (+7) and Hasso (+10) it's STR+ 110. STR merits makes STR+ 115. :>
Notice: the Sultan's Belt has an enchantment that makes +10 STR. so this may be a periodic str total but if you wanna use a Warwolf Belt then consider the total STR+ 110. Sultan's prolly best for BCNM (etc) NMs of all types...basically everything that isn't a party, heh. the Vampire Earrings are only active during night so during the day wear Triumph Earrings or sumthin, which brings the total down to 108 with Warwolf and daytime. you'll eventually (i stress the word eventually) see me with this STR set and then a Haste set. but the Samurai Haste set post is for another day.

Edit: Shura Haidate+1 now changed to Hachiryu Haidate.

I'm 72, and sold hauby at 70 for hachiman..

IMO hauby sucks compared to this, other then gods and some higher lvl HNMs ACC is much less important 70+ (mostly 71/72+) but yea, I've never been happier.. the STR+ is awesome as well as the store tp.. I honastally do not notice the difference in acc (I do have dual snipers, merman's gorget life belt ect) but the hachiman gear, (especially the full set) is worth it imo.

<.< it looks a heck of a lot better then hauby too

This is much better for HNM than haubergeon

SAM/RNG are very good dmg dealers, with hachiman set, no AGI- and faster tp gain = more dmg, the STR helps a good amount too.

Only thing Better than this is Kirin's Osode, and that's debatable.

Seeing as how STR is GREAT for the later level GKT WSs and how the +8 Accuracy on WSs is awesome, I'd assume this would be a great piece of equipment to swap in when you do a WS, either with a Bow or with your GKT.

Obviously the +ACC would be most helpful to Sidewinder, but it's all good. Store TP + effects btw, mean that that percentage is added to your TP gain. In this case, you'd gain 6% more TP per hit than you would w/o it. This means whereas you'd normally gain 18 per hit, you'll be gaining 19.05 ish.

Pretty helpful at times I guess, but I'm sure Hauby is much better.

ShadowBanisher is right. If you switch a weapon to include a bow/crossbow/gun, you'll reset your TP% to 0. I'd also like to know how many SAM/RNG are out there because it'd make more sense being either SAM/THF or some other support other than RNG because you'd get more DMG output with SATA when SAM is higher than 60.

What the heck are you talking about? This is BODY ARMOR. If you were to switch this in when you did a WS, it'd not only be more accurate, but the STR adds a LOT of DMG to it as well.

Switching ARMOR doesn't reset your TP. Only switching Main, Offhand, and ranged weapons resets TP (Ammo switches don't reset).

Why the hell did I get rated down?

hmm dude you know being threatened over the internet happens a lot.
#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 06 2005 at 9:41 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Switching any kind of equipment lowers TP back to 0%, so only using it for WS would mean... all the time.

It appears this would be more for the Sam/Ranger types. With the WS Acc + making Sidewinder a bit more accurate.
RE: Domaru
# Jun 25 2005 at 9:02 AM Rating: Decent
this body armor is lvl 72, i'm not sure why a lvl 72 sam would even WANT to do a sidewinder...lol
hmmm...sidewinder can't make lvl3 SC...it would miss a lot more than GK WS...and by then GK WS (tachi:Kasha) would have higher damage, especially if subbing thf, than a samurais sidewinder...
RE: Domaru
# Jun 25 2005 at 9:04 AM Rating: Decent
my mistake, its lvl 70, but all my points hold true except that tachi:Gekko is slightly weaker than tachi:Kasha. But, if subbing thf, tachi:Gekko would still outdmg a samurais sidewinder ez

Meh, doesn't bother me. It takes you 1 min, 30 seconds if you split Sa and Ta, to WS. It takes a Sam/rng 15 seconds at best, 21 as an average, and 27 seconds at worst to ws. I dont care if your gekko is 1600 and my sidewinder is only 1000.

Assuming Sam/rng gets lucky and hits 4 15 second tp's in a row, fires when he gets it, and you split Sa and Ta, giving you a ws every 30 seconds, after the first MINUTE of ptying I will already have roughly 800 damage over you. Either way, even if the sam gets the worst(1 hit from soboro, a multi hit GKT, only) all party long (which, by the way, NEVER happens), and you split sa and ta, after 9 min I will have already fired 2 extra sidewinders: 1 from barrage and 1 from 3 seconds of time differential between full sam/rng tp and the limitations of SaTa, keeping the overall DoT about even, slightly in your favour.

Well stats aren't entirely completely better than Haubergon. But I do see this as an alternative especially with the Store TP+6
