halcyon vs mithran
# Jul 22 2008 at 11:00 PM Rating: Decent
I just got my Halcyon rod (took me a while to switch since I fished pre-patch on my previous character before and was partial to the Mithran) and noticed something, I could EASILY catch (hook and pull in) fish well above my skill lvl (i.e. Gold Carp), something I couldn't possibly do with my Mithran. At my skill lvl (15 atm on this cha) I'm after Quus to skill on so i decided to do a lil test with the rods and this is what I feel people should know other than the very vague comments by people on these rods:

The Halcyon by far beats the Mithran rod since it can actually hold a fish on the line for very close to a full minute unlike the mithran which "may" hold the fish for 30 seconds and not only that the Halcyon WILL deplete the fish's stamina quickly, only about 2% slower than the Mithran so all in all, save yourself the frustration of losing almost every fish you could skill on to either the "too small" message or the "lost your catch" message because of the Mithran. The Halcyon is only a few K more than the Mithran anyway and itlle pay for itself in prolly one good skill-up session... even if you NPC the fish! XD

(if ya don't believe me grab each rod and try for yourself :p)

This thing Is amazing, Im lvl 14 and it only ever broke 1 time(I fish for gil not levels,so Im fishing for fish far above my lvl and thus why I have low skill), It was somewhere near PUP AF quest's "creepy ghost boats". Think it was a arrowhead log or coral.Anywho this will fish up small>larges np, if it dousn't have the "!!!" it will catch it.
Fishing without a keyboard
# Mar 02 2007 at 1:28 PM Rating: Decent
I have a keyboard (obviously, lol) but I usually play with the Xbox360 controller. How do I fish with this?
I have yet to catch a SINGLE fish, my line always breaks, so maybe I'm not using the controller right. I'm already a lvl 15 monk.
Appreciate your comments.
Fishing without a keyboard
# Jul 05 2007 at 3:05 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, this is sort of a late post. Halcyon means prosperous. So this rod is meant to catch more fish. From trying it out vs a Taru rod. The results are what you expect. More fish, more consistently. Also so far, no breakage. Its seems the trade off for more fish, is slower skillup.

If you're using a keyboard, you reel in the fish like this:
Behind your character, using the Numeric Keypad
press the 4 key if the rod is going to the right
Press the 6 key if the rod is going to the left

Facing your character, using the Numberic Keypad
press the 4 key if the rod is going to the left
press the 6 key if the rod is going to the right

I've been useing this rod since it came out. I've broken many. But I just keep getting them, because I think thier one of the more reliable rods. Besides the Lu Shangs and E. Rod. It can easily catch small fish, and can compare to a Comp. Rod agianst a bigger fish. If I ever recomended a rod this would be the one. [Alchemy resynth lv is around 75-80.]

What's better, this or composite rod? I have a composite right now, but I'm curious to wonder if I should trade it in for one of these.

I have used the Halcyon for a while now (lv55 fishing) and it has not broken ONCE on a small fish. It is not designed for large fish, as it will break easily on them. This is definitely one of the best rods, besides the Lu Shang, for catching small fish.

The only downside to the Halcyon (as QT mentioned below) is that it takes longer to drain the stamina than with a wooden rod.. but I prefer the longevity of keeping a fish on over that. (Albatross ring ftw!)

People keep on telling me that this is one of the best rods in the game. I tried it out and I didn't really see much difference in the field of carping.

In terms of "better," it depends on what your plans for use are. Composites are labelled for "big fish" although it is very possible to catch small fish with it. But small fish tend to not bite quite as often, and you will get msgs that the rod could not pull it up.

Halcyon and Mithran (also targetting big fish) are practically at the same level. Halcyon is a bit more durable, just a bit. The main differences is that Mithran is wooden and Halcyon is synthetic. Since it is synthetic, it takes longer to drain the fishes stamina as opposed to wooden rods ... but it can keep the fish on the line a bit longer.

Can still break on large fish, rusty items, arrowwood, and coral fragments.
I personally have not seen a difference between the "too small" msgs of mithran vs halcyon.

You may not notice a difference on moat carp, mostly because moat carp are a low level fish that would not be worth catching if it was not for the quest.

However, go jump on the ferry and see if you notice a difference. I sure did.

I used this rod and a composite rod until I got my Lu Chang's rod. This rod is awesome for anything that does not give you !!!. If you are fishing for something that gives you the !!! message, then I use my composite. Between these two rods, you do not need any of the other rods until around fishing skill 50 where Lu Chang's rod becomes a must have.

well, i fish for lu before i skill fishing (seriously, you think to find lu in ah, it like a dream at this era of fishing in that game, i have the money for pay lu in ah too)

ok, ppl may say i'm fool, but i use that in knightwell, the trick?

it break on arrowood log, and that only fishing log is alway in a !!! message

i can kill all mob i fish there, the only reason i dont fish !!!, it to not break my baby

RE: knightwell and that rod

Just use a Fastwater Fishing Rod if you're trying to fish moats at Knightwell. It's equally as good as a Halcyon is there and you can bring multiple backups without hurting your budget.

Or, you could just not fish @ Knightwell? I suggest Windy Woods for you're worried about rod breaks and you're fishing for moats

I'm a pissed little taru!

I was using this baby, which has paid for itself x5 in what I've gotten with it, but then I snapped.

I had to log for the night cause I was so distraut. I only got like 3.5 skill points out of it too.

I'm on Titan if anyone can fix it for me, as there are usually not any in stock on a reliable basis.

32k rod better than hume
# Nov 24 2005 at 6:23 AM Rating: Decent
i thought the Hume rod was the best, but recently I broke it for the 3rd time, but it did last me a long time. I recently bought Halcyon for 32k in windurst on Ifrit server. I hope it's worth my investment cuz i get tired of switching between hume and composite and still not being able to pull up fish very often during a boat ride. I'm fishing 32.

This rod will bring up any fish with '!' message. It will not break...Just don't try to catch any heavy(!!!) fish with it.

calimary?

No, it won't. At least it hasn't happened to me yet with fishing gear and fishing skill of 22.7.

The problem for me is being able to deplete the stamina bar of the fish and subsequently land the fish, bluetail or Noble Lady, before receiving the message: "You lost your catch".

It will also pull up the Cone Calamary with no problems.

I catch the aforementioned fish with the Halcyon rod and a minnow.

Losing gil instead of making it!
# Jun 29 2005 at 1:13 PM Rating: Decent
I bought this rod, used it for a few minutes in sandoria, then immediately took it to Sea Serpent Grotto to try fishing nebs. Want to know what happened??? The freaking thing broke within a few casts. This is what I lost that day fishing:
4 shrimp lures (10K each)
Halcyon rod (25k)
Carbon rod (5k)
And a few other things as well. Basically, I wanted to warn a few ppl, stick with a safe bet because testing out what is good or not and what you can fish up is NOT worth the risk or loss of gil. In retrospect, here is a site that may help everyone:

Hmmmm, should not break on nebs. I used it just before retiring on the ferry, with crayfish balls as bait iirc... Anyway, got 4 stacks of nebs (and nothing else...it is a specific neb rod/bait). Maybe the nebs in SSG are tougher????
Awesome rod

Awesome item, I grabbed one for 24k in bastok 2 hours ago and it's almost paid for itself already. Also catching a ton more fish and getting way more skill ups. I'm going to try buburimu fishing soon for shall shells and bluetail, hopefully start seeing good profit. I've gone from 34-36 in under 2 hours, this is a must buy for all fisherman out there. Catches fish way above your level, not once have I gotten a "you lost your catch due to skill level" and I've gotten almost a stack of breams. This rod is excellent for small fish, just be wary of the ferry, as I'm sure it's breakable there.
Halcyon
# Jun 14 2005 at 12:14 PM Rating: Decent
At lvl 37 I was down on my luck and had to sell my Lu Shang's rod. I have lvl from 37-45 with the Halcyon and I must say that I am quite impressed. Pound for pound I still beleive the Lu is the better rod, but gil for gil I'll stick with the halcyon. At least till I can afford another Lu at a higher lvl fishing..

It does catch fish faster ,easier and better. But I fished up 2 stacks of gold carp ,And didn't get
any skill ups at all.(I am a 42 apprentice at this time.)I switched to my Comp. and fished for a while, caught maybe 6 or 7 golds, got .2 points from that. (Was fishing in windy waters.) so are you guys that say you are lvl 10 and catching golds or lobster or whatever (High level fish) getting skill ups from them?
