I know ; ; I used them too for xp parties.... I'm hoping the price will return to normal after this quest is over with but it's unlikely.... So now all the foods to xp with are horribly over priced.. Guess it's time to go farm bison meat. ; ;

Just saw a JP player ( who was unfortunately AFK ) wearing what looked like 2 Signal Pearls. I checked and saw that one was something called a "Tactics Pearl", which "allows you to send a code to your adventuring fellow." It had 4/4 charges remaining, and was Rare/Ex.

Does anybody know where this item comes from, and more specifically, what it really does?

<I'm interested.>

Ok :) - I just got the Tactic's Pearl Yesterday. I completed the Food Quest for my NPC and for awhile neither Luto or my NPC Friend would give me anything new UNTIL ... I called my NPC Friend out and utilized the new "Chat" function while out in the field. I used it several times to make sure that there was no other statement he'd say. Then I met with him at the Rendez-Vouz point and he talked about investigating the "Empty". So, I went to Promy-Holla and right inside the entry there it was! A new Rendez-Vouz point. I went over there and here comes my friend saying lets look around, I discovered a ??? on the first floor and got a cs and although I believe I could have continued with my friend to the higher floors (i was not prepared for that) so I said we were done for the day and he got 400+ xp and then I was warped back to the entrance of Promy-Holla.

Once I returned to Jeuno I went to talk w/ him again and got my Tactic's pearl.

**NOTE** This incidentally also opens up the next quest for the Lvl Cap which starts in Selbina by a guy near the waters with the name of Diederik. The lvl cap quest is a a lengthy quest where u can take 2 separate paths (1 thru Windy which I chose or 1 thru Bastok). But this is another story and you can find the instructions of this thru www.KillingIfrit.com they have many posts on this quest and really good guides too. :)

Oh had to edit this cause I forgot to edit your question about what this pearl does. It allows you to call your NPC out for 30 minutes to xp w/ you up to a maximum of 4 times (and can be used every 10 minutes). I gather from KillingIfrit that you can get another once you use all the charges up but I haven't done this yet and I'm not sure if there is a timeline (maybe once a week) that this can be done. Hope you found this information useful. :)

I started the food quest by speaking with Luto. I got a cutscene where she tells me she wants me to help her fix the magic mirror. She'll recommend seeing someone in the Windurst Waters - (I think) Repository. This quest is called "Past Reflections" and is now on the quest log for hopefuly Upper Jeuno. I haven't checked the instructions they give hopefully pretty good.

If you haven't gotten the CS yet, maybe leveling your NPC some more. Have u recieved the 2nd weapon upgrade quest yet? If not it's likely you'll have to complete that first before getting a new quest from Luto. :)

I called mine out in Kuftal Tunnel. I'm gathering most of the dungeons they are now open to. I need to try it out in Sky tho. It would be cool if you could bring them out anywhere you xp. Which is cool cause I was trying to figure out where the heck to bring him to lvl them post 70 and they may have resolved that issue now. But.. I hate to say it.. But I fear they've likely capped the NPCs again -.- so I won't have to worry about this for awhile....

Hey guys, anyone who has the new NPC quest pending with the food items dont get scared by AH prices. 5 out of 6 can be NPCed!

Whitefish Stew - Windurst Waters in the Tavern where you get fame checked

Windurst Salad - Same place as above, or Upper Jueno in the race/job specific tavern

Icecap Rolanberry - Lower Jueno NPC where you get the Bard quest

White Bread - Same was Stew, Same as Icecap, or Tavern in Sandy South near MH

Sandy Pot of Tea - Tavern in South Sandy, or AH (probably cheaper in Sandy AH then NPC

Only the Bison Steak is the problem :\

Hope this saves some ppl gil from those crazy prices :)

Ok, so gave my NPC a bronze axe... now Luto says she is still confused or something and thinking of upgrading her weapon. Then Luto says something about trading a weapon or a shield to her. Well, Light Axe did not work and Maple shield did not work. Is there a database anywhere of what a NPC will and will not take?

Also, the NPC seems a little different since the update. She says that she is very sensitive to which country controls an area. Does anyone know what this means??

My Npc just hit lvl 40 tonight, finally. Ive given him headgear and all that stuff. He uses a Great Sword, "Two handed sword" i believe, & even tho hes a healer galka... which looks weird, he has the abilities of a whm/rdm/pld. its nuts. Hes been Haste'n me and always cures my ailments, along with using Weaponskills, which helps. Anyone know if there is lvl cap for the NPCs? or even at what point we can trade Luto better weapons? thanx

After I summoned Voldai a couple of times, we would fight either in Yhoator Jungle (He helped em get Elshimo Marble) or Altep. One day I talked to Luto, and said he was shopping for weapons. I traded Luto a lvl 1 Scythe, Bronze ‘‘something’’, and she said she would make sure he got it. Sure enough, next time I summoned him, he had it. He was using all scythe weaponskills up to lvl 70, but as soon as he hit lvl 33, he started using Nightmare Scythe, a lvl 100 weaponskill.

I talked to Luto again, and she said Voldai was thinking about upgrading his weapon. I went down to Neptune's Spire, and bought an Uchigatana. Traded it to Luto, and Voldai had next time I summoned him. He does Great Katana weaposkills up to lvl. 100 (Tachi: Kagero and below). He is now lvl 34, and from the looks of it, gets a piece of new gear every time I summon him.

You can check out if any changes were made at the Rendezvous Point right after you fight with him. Voldai's battle mode is set to Attacker, although I started him as shield. He's been attacker ever since I gave him the Scythe. He has died twice (stupid dhalmels).

Hope all this information helps.

I got Luto to tell me that my npc was shopping for a weapon the other day. I went to the Tenshodo and bought 2 Kunai (katana Lv 1) and traded both to Luto. When I checked my inventory, I saw that Luto only took one. I figured that you have to trade on two different occasions, so I traded the second one to her.

When I called my NPC friend, she was only holding 1 katana and a shield. I heard of the instance that they can dual wield, but I think the npc has to level up on the katana for a while before 2 can be held.

Anywayz...I was leveling her up with my 60 THF/NIN and saw that she can do spin moves with the Kunai. SWEET! I've seen her do Blade: Rin, Tekki, To and Retsu so far. I'm thinking that she has all of them but I end up killing the mob before she can set off another ws.

Here is the coolest thing so far on PLing your NPC friend with THF+Assasin Trait: They count as a SATA partner. If you take the time to position the NPC right behind the mob > SATA > Engage, you will see that you get the max damage + hate transfer. Since I have Dancing Edge at my disposal, sometimes I just TA+DE for the kill. Fortunately, the mob has a sliver of health left before it beats my NPC to a pulp.

One more thing, I noticed that if you go to an area that the NPC would get IT++ type of xp, when they leave they end up saying: Phew, its been a long day (or something to that effect)

I think that means they get the cap xp that they can have at that session.

When I took them to a lower level place, meaning lev 29 and under, they say something else like they should be going now or something like their bored.
NPC Armor

I've SMN'd my NPC about 2 times now. I am a lvl 60 PLD so I just put away my weapons hit it once and turn my back to the mob while my NPC attacks while I PL. I SMN'd my NPC last night and she had on new armor from the last time. So on this note... Does the same thing eventually happen with their weapons and other gear? How also do you check what lvl they are, and/or command your NPC to do different things. Also how do you change your NPC's job? (I hope this was not already answered in previous posts.) =)

An NPC idle timer!!?
# Aug 28 2005 at 9:39 AM Rating: Decent
Yesterday (August 27th, 2005) I used my other characters (I use 2 Accounts) signal pearl in Valkurm Dunes (Mind you i was on the side that leads to the HIghlands) to give my NPC some exercise, I had her heal to regain some lost magic before I begun and I ended up talking to a friend about synthing and the journey to get his own NPC, next thing I know, 2 thread leeches come at full speed towards her NPC (I still hjad her in heal mode) and started beating on him, alas she was a smn/war (I didn't feel like having her in a party so i gave her that combo) so i couldn't do much for him as those leeches conned IT to her and i didn't want her to die either, I myself was a 47whm/24blm but I couldn't heal him and I was so shocked by what was going on that i didn't have enough time to party up with my other characterso i could save him, so they killed him and went on about their business, now there were no signs of anyone zoning them here (that would be pretty dumb to zone them there anyways, they are passive-links to us Player characters) I was just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else, if so, can u recall what the idle time limit might be before mobs come after your NPC to kill him, I would have estimate it to be somewhere around 5 minutes... I'm not sure if this happens when you're not healing but I do know it occurs when you are healing. So I guess you all should consider this a warning ^^

Jeuno Ru'Lude Gardens- (pos unknown atm) between AH and zone to upper J
Bastok- (pos unknown atm) Near Mog house entrance in Bastok Mines
Windurst- (pos unknown atm) Near Mog house in Windurst Waters

Unfortionatly it too me like 20 weapons to try to trade to give mine a new weapon but finailly i got mine a "Claymore"... I have heard that u need to start low (Lv weapon & work your way up), work ur way up &, that the wepon must be sold @ a wepon store (this doesn't mean you can't synth or or it from a AH long as it is sold buy a NPC in a IN-game "Weapon Store"). I don't know if that is complete truth unfortainitly, because i tried to gove low level spears that are sold in Sandy too. I logged in to Alla to see if there was any metion of it, "/fume" someone needs to update the info on the site very bad (I know I am not the only one that thinks this). I hope this Reply answers some player questions that may be related to the quest/item.

i have been summoning my NPC nearly every day now, and just the other day i got a new option. i got to select appearence. not a big change mind you but it makes him wear headgear.

also i have found out that my NPC tends to stay out for about 55 minutes. now i have not tested this on rapid kills with my red mage, but as my ninja fighting toughs in the dunes (roughly level 20-23). usually he would tell me that it has been a busy day and leaves, when i take a while he says "is that the time?" and leaves.

Giving NPC a weapon
# Aug 08 2005 at 2:03 PM Rating: Decent
To have your NPC with the weapon of your choice, you must first talk to Luto (Quest starter for NPC) and get a Cut Sence. after That she will tell you that you can trade her ( Luto ) a level 1 weapon, and she will give it to your NPC. The next time you call on you NPC they will have the weapon you have traded to Luto.

Oh, thank you for clarifying. Yes, to give a weapon to your NPC you must give it to LUTO and she will give it to your NPC. I guess people have been trying to trade directly to the NPC. That won't work. ^^

Well, not sure I can help here but I CAN tell you the weapon she took from me. I gave her a bronze axe. As for whether she was shield or healer at the time, I don't remember and I do not know if that makes a difference. Try a bronze axe and see what happens.

I have been trying to take out my NPC Yoli (I love her!) out everyday. What I noticed was that when I used her as shield with my pathetically low level whm (level 6), her armor upgraded each time. I was very impressed when she came out wearing trader's saio and then later noct gear. However, then I started messing around with her "job" changing her from shield to healer and taking her out with my thief (level 56 main). Well, before I knew it, her boots went down back to lizzy and then back to scale mail. The last straw was when I found her wearing the mithra starter armor! OMG! I nearly threw a fit. I made her a "shield" again and started doing low level jobs with her. Sure enough, the armor started upgrading back up. Has anyone else found a pattern or is this all just random madness?

okies so the first time I did it, I just randomly picked a name. Taru female, Cupapa. Well, i wanted a tank, since i'm a whm. So I went back to Luto, gave her my pearl, and got the quest again. This time I chose the hume male, Gunnar. First I went to Ru'lude Gardens and talked to the old man, but he said "bearded dude?" and I said, nope! Then I went and talked to Red Ghost and he said, hume with the hair parted down the middle? and it wasn't what I wanted but it was better imo than the bearded dude. So I said yes. The when Bheemmm whatever asked me if it was his favorite color, I said no, and ended up with the brunette. I hope this helps. I'm going to see how many times I can do it to put together a database of answers and npcs to see what each one gets you.

You can change your NPC's appearance after already activating the quest? THANK GOD! I didn't know how the quest worked when I did it and ended up picking an absolutely hideous hume female (I want the blonde with the ponytail to kind of match me, a brunette with a ponytail).

So you just trade the signal pearl back as soon as you get it?

You need to first give your npc a really weak weapon, like lvl 1 to 5 maybe. 1 would be the best, and i say 5 b/c if you give your NPC a GA there is only a lvl 5 available. After a while Luto if eventually say ur NPC is looking for a "upgrade" on their weapon, which then allows you to give a higher lvl weapon, maybe like 5-12. My NPC now hold a lvl 12 greataxe :)
