I'm 2/14 on this pin. 1 for me, 1 for my RL mothers character.
It's pretty easy to claim and camp, had a bit of bad luck on the droprate.
It's also been very useful for my THF, NIN and soon RNG will have some fun with it too.

I just killed the Valkurm Emperor as a 39THF/19RNG on Ragnarok and got the Empress Hairpin (ToD was 1:32pm EST if anyone cares).
This was only my fourth time seeing him and my second time fighting him. I had seen someone else take him down at 12:28pm EST this morning (that person got the drop), and I logged back in at 1:18pm EST to hunt him again. I was using the placeholder method, killing just the top of the four flies, and he spawned within two cycles (10 minutes total).
I was surprised to find no one else in the area at all, because there had been about five other players there at the previous spawn.
Anyway, good luck to everyone else still hunting.

Just had to post that I obtained mine last night after camping for one full day. Missed the first spawn as i did not know the ToD, but the DRG who got the claim did not get the drop.
Almost 5 hours later VE pops again, yes 5 hours. I get claim and no drop, wait for another hour no pop, second hour VE pops I get claim and drop, /hurray.
I used the placeholder strategy and it worked like a charm. After killing the PH just hit scavange and watched the timer to hit 0 and lock onto PH again.

Running through Valkurm as RDM41 and started killing just for fun. Attacked a fly and saw it was VE. It died, I got hairpin. Came back by about 10 minutes later and there were about 6 other high level chars camping. Guess I just got lucky!

so i camped this for 30 minutes with an LS friend..
me 48 PLD/THF [for treasure hunter]
LS member 42 MNK/WAR
i grabbed it after a short wait, killed it, got the drop. and my LS member lotted it for 936. haha. screwed me. i was so mad. it's okay though cuz we went and camped golden bat. got the night cape after about an hour. came back to camp VE and it spawned around the same place. got the drop again. 3/3 in dunes today. >_>

1/5 with TH1 on and off...Was camping one night and another THF got claim over me and got the drop, I congratulated him and he left and I was left with 2 other people camping it that diddn't have widescan, after 2hours it popped got claim and it dropped, I was amazed it dropped 2x in a row but happy :D
All the PH theorys posted here are correct so if you go by them you will get claim no problem. GL ^^

me and ls guy were farmin it it poped in front of me we didnt claime it the guy who did kinda bragged
I was on a chocobo in the dunes with a couple of LS mates huntin down Ghouls for Aht Urghan pass, when i happened along the VE! Me being a 50 DRK of course i jumped off and claimed him! As i fought him 2 others were examining me sending me tells at how mad they were blah blah blah..Long story short i got the claim, got the drop, and gave it to my THF LS mate. Just thought i'd mention to those who camp for hours and hours..Just treat it like you would a regular mob, look for it if it's not there, don't worry about it. You'll get lucky eventually.
this is something that helped me ALOT when there was lots of competition...it isnt very effective without the thf AF boots for more flee time. when you kill PH and get a 5 min recast timer, when the timer hits 0 and PH or VE pops, hit flee before you scan. i cant count how many times i have lost 3 seconds to using flee... I lost a few claims by just that much time. when I flee then widescan, I got EVERY VE pop. tonight i saw 9 pops, i got 8. and the one i missed i had my dart in the air but a WHM outflashed me. so this is what i do. when abilityi JUST hits 0, use widescan. if you dont see it, close scan, hit flee, then widescan. that will give the mob the leeway time to pop and widescan to load it, then you hit track and run towards it

I haven't played for quite a while, and was quite surprised when one of these dropped from the VE. I took almost 10 months off from regular play, and had no idea Square Enix messed around with these drops, but since I was actually going to use the drop, I'm not worried. I'm still perturbed about how the inflation has skyrocketed since I last played--even to the point to where I can't level my ninja at all since it costs too much. Players should at least be able to play a class at it's basic level without having to farm for ages per level.
Also, I have no idea why people do it, but I seem to get quite a bit of flack since I'm a RDM/WHM trying to camp NM. It's not that difficult considering my fast casting spells (like Dia or Poison), but it does limit my camping radius a bit. You definatley do not need Widescan to camp NM, all you need is patience, time, macros, and quite a bit of luck. I just find it amusing that I can beat out several Rangers and other classes to this guy, and yet I still am constantly sent /tells on how I'm wasting my time.
Oh well...live and let live.

You are correct. You do not *need* widescan to camp this or any other NM. But for VE you will be at a disadvantage. You will need a bit more luck to get regular claims over those that know the place holder and spawn times etc.
I can tell you that the few times I've camped VE I've gone as THF/BST. I use Flee just as the PH/VE is about to pop and then I use widescan. As my BST is level 74 then my widescan range is like that of RNG. I can also use my /charm <scan> macro for a very flast claim while fleeing to the NM. Plus Treasure Hunter II to help with the drop. Sure you can camp as a RDM/WHM. In fact I would welcome you to camp any NM against me as RDM/WHM. I would wish you good luck. As you would need slightly more of it than me. ^^
I've been camping VE for a week now, using PLD67/RNG14. Just got my Empress Hairpin today.
My one main suggestion to the FFXI community on VE is: DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CAMPING VE WITHOUT RNG WIDESCAN!!!! The spawn radius is just too big (almost twice as big as the circle drawn on many NM spawn maps). My final tally on drops was 1/8, but my final tally on claims was 8/8. Some of those claims happened when I was the only person camping, but for at least half of them there were multiple other campers, and I'm guessing that they didn't have widescan since I usually got the claim by a wide margin.
For most of my time camping, I tried to keep track of the PH using the method that has been posted to these forums, and generally it seemed to work. VE usually spawned once an hour or so, and I can't exclude that I might have been in the wc the couple of times it didn't seem to spawn for 2+ hours. I positioned myself just north and west of the central clump of trees, and as soon as VE popped on widescan, I'd track it and run until I could target it. As soon as it was within flash range, I'd flash it, claim it, kill it. I recommend practicing your claiming whenever the PH spawns; be sure to know exactly how far away from the mob you can be and still have your flash/dart/charm hit the mob.
Despite all this, today I just got stupidly lucky. I logged in to the Dunes and there were about 10 people camping, and 2 were fighting a pair of Damselflys right by the central clump of trees. I started spamming widescan, and within a minute, VE popped, way off to the NW corner of the spawn radius. Given the number of other campers, I thought I'd have no chance at the claim, but I ran the considerabe distance to VE and got the claim no prob, and beat all the other players by at least 15 seconds. Needless to say, I finally got the drop.
Another observation that has been posted that seems to be right in my experience is that VE seems to spawn when a bunch of the 4 flies (on ws between Snippers and Leeches) pop nearby one another (your mileage may vary).

that was definitely NOT a 1 hour Re-Spawn it was 2 hours 20 mins!
I came back 40 mins after I Killed the last VE....waited another hour and 10 mins since that, with WideScan and still no VE respawn...come to think of it I was here about 1hour 45 the first time too.
I guess since this has become story time, I might as well share mine. I have questions too though, but 1st... Ive been campin this piece ever since I found out the Emperor Hairpin sells for 2mil on Leviathan, which has been almost a week, about 10-20 hrs total. As a WAR35/THF17, I sat in one place each time I camped because every time that I did camp, I almost always saw the Emp in that area. I got him on my second camp because he practically spawned on my head, voked him, and got the good ol'Insect Wing. Couple camps later, same place, missed Emp by couple steps and lost him to someone else. Finally, I signed on today after logging for a party, noticed a large amount of peeps campin the Emp, so I decided to stay and see what was up. stayed in my place, and sure enough, my buddy the Emperor spawned. I had voke ready, pulled em my way, used my 2 hr because I hardly use it, and took him out. Obtained an Insect wing and the Empress Hairpin. I was a bit dissapointed because I noticed that I would not be able to sell the hairpin and make the gil that I so desperately need, but all in all, I think I will be satisfied with my find.
My advice for others... go to whatever spot that seems to continuously spawn Dragonflys and stay there. You can use that info on 4 placeholders, or 1 or whatever, but you dont have to worry about killing em. Theres always someone there runnin around like a chicken with its head cut off killing em. Yes, you can have both empress and emperor hairpins in your posession at one time. The salable emperor hairpin is dropped in BCNM30 "Dropping like flies". Which is a very easy BCNM, but requires 2hr abilities for the easiest win method. I'd say drop rates are equal between VE, and the BCNM.
A little over 1k is all a npc is going to buy the empress hairpin from you for. Which if you did sell it, it would almost be a crime, and would severly **** those off who spend hours trying to obtain theirs. Keep the ra/ex pin if you have future plans of leveling thf or nin. Which most people break down and do anyway.

i have wanted a hair pin for the longest time and after days of trying this guy i gave up on getting this pin untill i found about BCNM 30 droping like flies o.O! serously it is much better to do then camping this guy. drop rate is the same lol just no camping. + if you get it from BCNM you can sell it if you wish. i was glad when i got it from the BCNM and its nice to know i have the option to sell. but i'm keeping it O_o! mine! no touchy! ....sry >.>....

I was camping VE last night and it spawned within 30 mins. Killed it but no drop so i run left and right along where he spawns killing all the damselflys and i did that for 4 1/2 hours and he still didn't pop..I don't know if he spawned somewhere real faraway from where i was and someone killed it real quick so i couldn't see or if it just didn't spawn.
WooT!! I finally got my hairpin. My final record is 1/14. Which easilly accumulates to over 20-30 hours of camping. And now I have to find another excuse to not be leveling.
Couple weird things I thought I'd mention. Just like with Leaping Lizzy, when I finally got the drop from VE, there was nobody around to scoff, or cheer. Every other time I claimed LL, or VE, it was always followed by...
"Drop?"
"Any luck?"
"I hope you got the drop so you'll leave."
But after VE's death, the beach was completely empty. I was all alone to /joy to myself. I know nobody being around doesn't have anything to do with the drop rate. But it is a strange coincidence.
Lastly is the pop times on VE. I can almost swear that VE pops in intervals of an hour with maybe like a 5 minute window. My theory is that the PH must be up when VE's minimum spawn time has expired (1 hour). If this condition is met, then VE will or won't spawn 5 minutes after the PH is killed. If VE doesn't spawn, then it's going to be another hour and nowhere in between that.
This is just theory, and I'm still trying to put it all together.

It's taken me several months of on and off camping and 13 claims, but as of now I can finally stop camping VE. I just got my hairpin an hour ago.

3. Scroll down the list till you see a group of four flys in between groups of leeches and crabs
4. Kill the top fly on the list of four, that's the PH. Yes there is only 1 PH, anyone that tells you different is either lying to you or wrong.
5. Use a 5 minute recast ability and use it as a timer
6. When the timer on your abiltiy hits 0.00 start to widescan from the center again
7. When VE pops it will be on the bottom of the list of 4 flys.

So these two Bogys decide that they're gonna agro me while i'm camping VE on my 38monk.
The fights weren't really bad, except the fact that they both had ice spikes. They ended up killing me with poison and rasp and drown. I /shout ed for raise right before i died. Level 25 whm /tells me he's gonna come up to raise me as soon as the Bogys are gone. I'm not sure whether he attacked the VE or if it attacked him, but he ran up died right next to me. it was an entralling experience. I ended up being raised a while later by another camper named Igi, prety cool lil taru

If anyone know the Wide Scan list on this thing, or if it even has one, please do post.
ok, for starters, you don't need ranger for widescan on this thing. BST is good enough unless you're waaaaaaay to the west near the rock... then you can't see if a fly pops on the faaaaar east wall. Also, you got charm for claiming... Which is just as quick as provoke and from about the same distance too.
As for how widescan works... there's a group of mobs sectioned off. First group shows mobs to the NE corner, second group on the beach where VE spawns and third, to the NW... maybe more for Ranger (less mobs to pick thru on widescan also another plus to bst's widescan). Anywho, the Damselflys (at least the place holder's) and the VE himself will be listed between the snippers and leeches of the second group. Here's some pix:

Now there's 4 place holder flies... they all have a respawn time of 5 minutes. Hope this helps ^.^
As for VE spawn time from ToD... heh, your guess is as good as mine. Sometimes I've camped for 30~90 min... other times (like tonight) ~220 hrs+. However, figuring out how the place holder's work really helped me out so far. Be nice if I can get this pin now... 0/3. :\

I'm like 5/7 on claims and like 1/5 on the Hairpin. I used stikyfingas' placeholder advice and in all the pops I saw VE did indeed pop in between the Snippers and the Thread Leeches. Another thing I noticed was that if I waited for all 4 placeholders to pop and killed all 4 VE popped after like 1 hour to 1 hour 5 minutes; so in addition to making it easier to keep track of the placeholders' respawns, doing this might force the VE pop after only 1 hour. I haven't camped it enough to say for sure that this is a constant occurrance, but it happened to me 3 times in a row (like 3H 20M) with me getting the Hairpin on the 3rd kill.
After so many times trying to camp VE and not even seeing it because I go afk or an entire ls camping the area, I finally have my Empress hairpin (Thanks Goober) :) rare/ex owns :D

Come back today and nobody else there bar one who was afk. I followed the method described and within 20 mins he popped. Flee then steal and easy fight for lvl 40 THF. 1/1 now a pretty happy.

I just posted that I got the Bounding Boots, well i was soo high on success that I go over to VE spawn point, wait a bit, and find VE. I go to him, but unfortunately, a 32 pld gets him, I /cheer him on, but unfortunately, he can't take him, he dies, then I go to fight him. A Lil hard fight, but he finally dies. Then I see Skythe obtains 1 insect wing, and 1 sec later Empress Hairpin. I almost pissed my pants.. Dude Its gotta be God looking down at me over the countless hours i've thought about hunting this thing and didn't, and BTW it was 1/1!
