Just so anyone looking at this knows, if you take it off after giving yourself Phalanx with it, the Phalanx effect immediately drops.

Dmg reduction of about 17 sounds right, lasts 3 mins, recast is 10 mins, and the actual activation time is a bit long.

I can definatly see some uses for this, and since it's got 50 charges, you've got some time to fool around with it.
To pervent confusion

I have this posted in a discussion on the Thief boards and thought it may be useful here to help clear up any confusion people may have about the effects of the shield with actual data.
Effects of Spartan Hoplon~(I play on PS2 so I am not able to perform any parses)

Job: 69THF/34NIN so there is no magic skill present that would affect the results.

Mob: Desert Dhalmel(Eastern Altep)note I pulled the mob with a dart and then let it beat on me to prevent it from dying too quick/using many tp moves, it only used Whistle one time which raised its AGI, nothing to affect the damage I received. This is limited testing but it definitely proves that no enhancing skill is involved in the Spartan Hoplons enchantment. I took out the highs and lows of each set to minimize skewed results.(With the enchantment the highs and lows were 22 and 0, without the enchantment they were 79 and 15).The mob was naturally missing a great deal but this is the only job I cold perform the test on safely.

My gear setup was:
Weapon: Garuda’s dagger
Shield: Spartan Hooplon
Ammo: Dart
Head: none
Neck: none
Ear 1:Merman’s earring
Ear 2: none
Body: Assult Jerkin
Hands: none
Ring 1&2: none
Back: Amemets+1
Belt: Royal Knight’s belt +1
Legs: Bravo’s subligar
Feet: Strider boots
Total Defense: 209

With Shield Enchantment-
Duration: 3 minutes
Number of times hit:12
Total damage taken:143
Avg. Dmg. Per Hit:11.92

Without Shield Enchantment-
Duration: n/a
Number of hits taken: 12
Total damage taken: 348
Avg. Dmg. Per Hit:29

Avg. difference of damage between the shield with enchantment and without:17.08

Hope this helps clear up any confusion anyone had about the shiled! If more tests are necessary please let me know as this was jsut a small sample!

Nice shield, although im a lvl 50 Rdm and my enhancing skill is capped at 147 and Phalanx cuts off about 22-23 pionts of damage for me . . .i think the phalanx formula on alla is wrong, beautiful shield tho
Wow

This shield is awesome if you triple swap it. Buy 3 of them, Phalanx lasts 3 minutes and cuts of exactly 17 HP (no matter your level or enhancing magic or HP or anything like that) and you can trade three of them on and off for an almost constant Phalanx effect. Unless a mob is hitting you for more than 85 damage, this will have a higher reduction than earth staff AND you can use a sword. Not only that, you get the bonus of shield blocks :D
Fun fact:

The Spartan phalanx was a solid line of "hoplites" I (infantrymen) marshalled in eight to ten ranks heavily armed with a short sword, large round shields, and long, spears which were not hurled but were used as pikes to thrust with as the line advanced. The exposed right side of each hoplite was protected by the shield of the man next to him and, so long as the phalanx maintained its alignment, it was, to quote Polvbius,"irresistible in face-to-face combat."

Thought I'd clear up what was said below. The more you know. :P

Me thinks my whm would like this alot. I think this would shave off about 26 HP's at my level and thats after blink, and before stoneskin. Not to mention I already have protect IV. Sub nin to toss up shadows. Me likes :D

unfortunately, regardless of level, this shield acts like a 190 enhancing phalanx: 17 damage reduction.

How ironic, it gives the enchantment "Phalanx". Sorry, I'm kinda into the whole military history stuff. XP
