refresh Drop
# Nov 04 2007 at 1:43 PM Rating: Decent
Just wanted to confirm something. I just killed this mob. I solod it as 75 bst. Very easy for CC to just beat it down. I did not get the hat drop, but REFRESH did drop of this mob. No real money, but I have cool new title for a few days.

An Interesting bit of info......

Found on another site.

Historical Background

Taisaijin is widely believed to be a joke-NM based on an in-joke that isn't commonly known among English-speaking players. The Red Mage magic spell Refresh was introduced to Final Fantasy XI in the February 5, 2003 update.

At the time Refresh was introduced, the methods and locations for obtaining the scroll were still largely unknown. As the story goes, before the whereabouts of Refresh became known, one Japanese Red Mage claimed that he had gotten a Refresh scroll as a drop from a Taisai in Ranguemont Pass. The rumor eventually spread, and for a period of time, Taisais were being farmed constantly for the scroll. The truth is, that Red Mage lied. Refresh is not, nor has it ever been, a drop from Taisai. That Red Mage had discovered one of the actual methods for obtaining Refresh and proceeded to monopolize that source, profitting from the advantage since there was no competition for it and everyone was deceived into farming Taisais.

This incident would give rise to an in-joke among Japanese players. When another player asked where to find a newly introduced item that no one yet knew how to obtain, a common phrase became: "I found it on a Taisai".

Taisaijin drops a Scroll of Refresh and Spelunker's Hat, a piece of equipment called the "Anti-Optical Hat" due to it having completely opposite stats to the Optical Hat, which also drops from a Hecteyes mob. Square-Enix added the Refresh drop as irony, where, if players do not kill Taisai for a long enough time, Taisaijin, a mob which does actually drop the scroll, will appear. Spelunker's Hat was likely added as a nod to the fact that people were farming Taisais, which had no useful item, meaning Taisaijin has nothing a player would want (besides as a trophy item, though the title itself, Bye-Bye, Taisai, can be considered a trophy).

Taisaijin is Japanese for either "grand festival god", "king of the grand year", "grand festival", or "large age".

Perhaps the point of the hat is to use it while not fighting, and it being a "Spelunker's Hat"... Has anyone tried using it while actively mining? Considering there's no other headgear with mining bonuses, I'd think that to be a likely possibility.

I have to agree that in an exp setting this hat is absolutely useless. But for people like me who skill up and skill up often it would be great. Not to mention you skill up on lower lvl enemys making the skill up pty that much smoother.

For people who skill up often? . . . ACCURACY-10

Unless you're skilling up Parrying or Shield skill, this is beyond pointless, it's detremental.

You do not gain skill on lower enemies because of lower accuracy. You can skill up on lower enemies because of lower SKILL.

He may mean guarding, parrying, or shield skill ups. Evasion -10 means you get hit more. When you get hit more, there is more of a chance for your character to use its shield, parry, or guard.
Hmm

I think this hat would be decent for going into the Maat fight, if he really does have the same stats as the armor you have equipped when you first enter...just my 2 cents.
:D Awesome

For those that really care how well they do their job:

Gimp +3 is awesome.

Seriously. Just think of something that will help you level evasion, guarding and parrying at the same time. Or whatever skill. I'm not trying to be exact.

After 2 years of playing, I can't think of anything SE put in that's truly worthless. Except maybe AF1 :P

#REDACTED, Posted: Nov 10 2005 at 9:02 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) How nieve can you all be? This hat is GREAT!! Don't you remember that going into Maat fights, he copys your stats? Well if you have Stumbling Sandals, and this hat, that is a whole lot of thats that are reduced on Maat, and then, you can change over during battle when you get into the arena with him!

That rumour needs to be dismissed so badly.

To all that say this hat sucks. Look at it this way. How many people do you know who've killed Taisaijin. And of those people, how many got the hat.

Among all else, it's a hell of a trophy. More so than the title.
It's Useful...

Um... to those that said this hat is useless, it *can* be use to skill up Parrying Shield, and Guard... it's awesome imo

Almost had it, lost the lot.

Why do I want it? Because it's stupid/silly. I've had a Hakutaku eye cluster forever, never got my Ohat yet. So somebody in my LS sees me sometime, and they think "hey! finally got his hat". Then the check me.

Plus just having such a moronic hat would be fun. Gimp+1.

this could be good for skilling up
Hidden effect maybe?
# Nov 07 2005 at 6:51 AM Rating: Good
Given the fact that the stats can't be measured beyond observation however a friend and I were discussing a way to trigger a hidden effect.

Spelunking is a term for cave exploring or cave diving. If you are underground maybe this turns into an O.hat.

Don't know but if there isnt' any hidden effect for this thing, I'd call it worthless or possible used to pop a different NM (Goblin Wolfman maybe in Oldton?).

Skaw has tried a number of things, including using this in caves / dungeons. He's also tried trading it to the abjuration guy and various quested WS NPC's. He's a very curious guy so I'm sure once he figures it out, he'll post up.

Just wanted to clarify that this does nothing in caves / dungeons.
This has uses
# Nov 07 2005 at 4:31 AM Rating: Decent
This DOES has a few uses. Only 2 of which I know of.
There is a BCNM that reverses - and + stats, since this is lower lvl than optical its nice for that. Also, Maat fight is rumored that he gains the same stats as you when you go in. Now say for pretty much any job. Go in with this hat and NQ Scorpion rings and his acc is way down, not to mention he probably won't be dodging your hits. And the -ranged acc is good for Rangers I guess.
(Just remember to switch the equipment out...)
