Summary

A strange voice from within Carbuncle's Ruby is asking you to gather the seven colors of light...

Walkthrough

Go out and fight leeches, they will drop a Carbuncle's Ruby, which is a very rare drop. Once you have the stone item, go to Windurst Walls and click on the door in the House of the Hero to talk to Ajido-Marujido. You will be told to experience all 7 weather elements. To do this, visit various zones until you have seen each type of weather pattern in the world (you will be shown a cutscene of the stone changing color). NOTE: You cannot acquire weather effects in towns or dungeons, nor can you obtain them from a Scholar casting the weather effect on you.

  • Red - heat - Valkurm, Rolanberry, Altepa, Yhoator Jungle, Meriphatud Mountains.
  • Orange - clear skies - most places
  • Yellow - sand - Valkurm, Tahrongi, Konschtat.
  • Green - wind - Tahrongi, Mhaura, La Theine.
  • Indigo - ice - Xarcabard, Beaucedine etc.
  • Blue - rain - La Theine, Pashhow, Rolanberry, Buburimu, Yhoator Jungle, boat rides
  • Violet - thunder - Konschtat, Jugner, boat rides

You will know you got the pattern by zoning and seeing a cut scene. If you don't get a cut scene, you didn't get the pattern. You don't have to be near the weather, just in the same zone as it.

Once you have all 7 patterns, go to La Thiene Plateau and find the stone circle at G-6. Trade the stone to ??? and you will get flagged to be able to change jobs to Summoner.

i recently did the smn quest and had a hard time getting the heat pattern, but a friend of mine noticed a pattern. a heat pattern shows up on clear days around 15:00 until 19:00, so thats probly your best chance if your getting the heat pattern in valkurm.

Dropping theory. (I'm crazy)

Okay so I was farming for Bloody Robes because I just installed Aht Urgan a while ago. I used an AoE weapon skill and accidentally hit a leech with it as well as the Bogy. I killed the bogy then the leech and got a the ruby. I've also helped friends get their rubys and killed bogys in the process and gotten bloody robe drops really frequently. Maybe the more you farm something the less likely it is to drop what you're looking for? So say you want a Carbuncle's Ruby well maybe kill a bunch of Bogys and snippers around the area and then kill a few leeches in between. I don't know I'm probably just too tired to think but if someone could give evidence to supporting or desupporting this please do so.

After several consecutive days of killing leeches in Bubu, I got the drop.

Level 30 BLM, solo. I first tried the northeast beach, but I moved to the southern beach after two days of no drop. After killing upwards of 300 leeches (and dying a few times in between), I was ready to call it quits and wait for help.

I had just died again, when I decided I'd do one last run on the northeastern beach, so to there I returned. First leech... nuke nuke nuke! ... Drop! {/joy}!

Just need a few more weather patterns now...

Also, there was a post here claiming that use of magic significantly reduces drop rate. I am almost positive that this is BS. Mages, don't waste your time meleeing those leeches! I did this for quite a while, and the drop came from a leech that I nuked to death - no melee at all.

Cheers, and happy hunting!
Haha drop rates

Was smearing the Leeches en-masse in the Argus/Leechking room with Spinning Scythe and general Dark Knight Badassness while farming keys for RSE, and we got two rubies and 4 keys within 30 seconds o.O
Got it

Ruby took about two months and three solid hours yesterday in Buburimu yesterday. I also popped 5 of 7 weather patterns in about 45-75 min shortly after getting the Ruby. Today it took about 2 hours total to get Ice and Fire. Before today is over I will be lvl a shiny new blue atomic squirrel :D
Long

Wow, this was one of the longest quest I did. I was unluckey with getting the drop, and took me 2 days of doing this. Then, took me 6 hours to get the Heat Element. But, finally, I got it!

Well i play Ifrit and as grodark posted with his auto there is no worries if you can leave ur (system you play on all night) you should wake up to a Cut scene since you cannot get out of it without confirming the text not just by moving so it shouldnt take all that long and its very good possibility depending on how much u sleep

Just fixing up your post sice you said you should still be zoning unells you know you didnt get it

Does anyone know what the weather NPC will say when there will be a day with the fire element, is it like today it will be sunny with a chance of a heatwave or something? i will appreciate it if someone told me what the weather NPC says because all i need is fire and i don't really have time to go to altepa
RUBY ><

This was the toughest advanced job I had to get. That stupid ruby laughed at me for 2 months before it dropped. Just do not take a BLM with you that's casting -ga spells. It will NEVER drop that way.. lol
RUBY ><
# Sep 16 2006 at 8:20 AM Rating: Decent
That's funny. I just helped a LS mate get theirs. As a BLM casting -ga spells. took less than an hour as noone was around I could kill all the leeches in 1 go.

is it luck?

woo hoo, i just finished smn quest!!!! I flagged it and collected all the elements under 1 hour and 30 minutes!!!!! Either i got lucky or it was destiny calling me to get the only job I did'nt have. This is how it started. I was out in Qufim lvling my marksmenship with my 38THF, and I started fighting the leeches out there (from slowdown of skill lvling from giants/snippers/worms), third leech i destroyed dropped the Carbuncle's Ruby. I was like hey, ive been needing that (even though i really wasnt interested in SMN anyhow). So I change to my 73RDM and go out to collect the elements, which was so freaking easy, fire a.k.a heat was my third element i collected, so either i was lucky or again it was destiny driving me to become a smn. I think that it is pretty funny reading these posts about people having a hard time with some of the elements when i got them very quickly, good luck to all you soon to be smn's out there!!! Just follow the directions up top and you will have no problem getting the elements.

got my ruby in 20 minutes in peninsula. i was lvl 50 war. my link has been getting them in qufim as of late roughly an hour for each. if u really want ruby i say go to peninsula with a high lvl person from link and let them have at it. the more leeches u kill the better chance u have of getting one. i have found 4 for my link in the last week so if u need one and are one titan send caprLce a tell...i'd be more than happy to help

in Garuda i found the easiest place to get the ruby is the western beach of the buburimu peninsula there were lots of leaches and if you are lvl 30 plus (i was rdm) you can go from one fight to another for quite some time! dropped off about the 10th fight.

currently getting the weather patterns, can anybody tell me, do u have to 'zone into' the area with the weather or can u be in the area when the weather changes?

You have to actually 'zone into' the weather. If it changes, you won't get the cutscene.
So long

It took me over 24 hours like 3 days strait to find the carbuncle ruby. I would say do this quest if you know you want to be a summoner for sure. I love it
NPC question
# Jul 23 2006 at 11:02 PM Rating: Decent
lame question, but does ANYONE know of any NPCs that give tiny hints as to the fact that you need a ruby or something to start the quest? I've never needed help with any of the jobs except with this one I finally had to look on here. Finding a ruby is somewhat difficult in the first place, then to get the idea you might need that to get into the house or happen to have it in your inventory is kinda out there. I at least assumed house of the hero was the right spot since that person was the first summoner. But anyway, anybody have any info?

Ok, well considering a lot of people who try this quest get very frustrated when they don't see a certain element such as Fire in Valkurm Dunes. Well the solution to this is a hands-off approach. Litterally! Here is what you need:

- A Keyboard that allows you to play FFXI
- Your Auto-Disconnect off (though i'm sure you probably don't need it, it never hurts to be safe) Menu >> Config >> Global
- Access to the specific area. (If you can't get there then how are you supposed to see the element?)
- Sole possesion of your Computer, Xbox360, or PS2 (You will need it for the night so beg/barder ahead of time if you share it)
- A way to press down a key for a very long time

Ok well now that you have all of this Congratulations! You may now go to bed! What? I didn't tell you how to do it? Oh ok, well once you get to the desired area (and you don't see the certain element when you zone in) Just stand there. Now press the 5 key on the Number Pad to switch to first person. Now devise a way to hold the 2 key down for a few hours (I chose a pencil, my computer desk post, and some tape.) Your situation will probably be somewhat close but to keep it more universal i'm going to have each of you be creative! Yes that's right you get to create something and brag about it later :-p So yea go to bed now that you can zone back and forth and not touch anything. Come back and check on your character in the morning. If you are still zoning you are good. If not, your rig probably broke down on you so try again! How do I tell whether i've got it? Well considering 90% of you sleep more than 6 hours a night, you have a very good possiblity of attaining the desired element(s) yes thats right you can get more than one! You COULD camp between two zones that carry desired elements but i'll leave finding those areas up to you ;-)

Well hope you guys get what you needed and didn't have to stress out to get it! Now onto being productive! *Activates LFP* lmao

That's pretty damn smart. I'm doing it right now down in the jungleswhile i go off to class. I just hope a GM won't bust me, although I don't think it would really matter. Thanks for the idea.

Summoner quest waiting
# Jul 19 2006 at 10:30 AM Rating: Decent
This quest takes forever. They should definatly change how it's all done. Fire takes the longest, though I got it this morning in the Valkurm dunes, I think I got lucky ^^. I only need ice now! I'm currently in Quifim Island. My little brother always got it here, but some people say it's kinda of rare to come by. But I don't wanna go to the other places, I'll get aggro and die. Highest level character Samurai 37.

in my 3+ years of playing I have never seen ice weather in qufim. I've seen thunder and light but never ice. I think you might need to camp a different zone to get the last weather.

Upon completing the quest, a rainbow will appear in LaThiene (usually just over the crag). The rainbow WILL appear even if it's the middle of the night. Hence, the title "Rainbow Weaver".

I'm not sure how long it stays there, but I'd guess one Vana'diel day.

You'd wanna "risk" going to Altepa because it's more common there. You must have been lucky to get it "no problem" in Valkurm as it took me 8hours to get it in Valkurm.

I don't know if it's more common here or not, but everytime I've been to Valley of Sorrows the weather has always been Fire element, if you're having trouble in Valkurm or Altepa, you could always try there.
Fire Altepa?

I had no problem gettin fire at Valkurm Dunes, don't see why anyone would risk headin to altepa for it o.O

Someone told me that the altepa desert is the best place to get the fire elemental quickly. I went with my one freind and even tho we didnt have maps we made it to Raboa where we bought maps then zoned and fire. I would say thoes having trouble with fire go there its a bit dangerous but then again your gonna have to trek to the glacier too so..... Defintally enjoying SMN trying to get to lvl 20 now so i can do the solo avatar capped fights.
