Summary

A lump of Bomb Steel and a Sacred branch are required to make a new katana. You will have to ask Jaucribaix's pupils to find out where you can get these items.

Walkthrough

To begin this quest, you will need to speak to Jaucribaix in Norg.

To get there, rent a chocobo in Kazham and head all the way south to the outpost. Stay in Yuhtunga Jungle and beware the holes. Two are connected to each other and will bring you back out to the Outpost and another will take you nowhere. You will need to fall through the hole nearest to the waterfall. Head outside and straight towards the right side of the waterfall as you see it. This will take you to Sea Serpent Grotto.

Once at Sea Serpent Grotto, you want to either have Sneak on you or use silent oil. Once you are set, stick to your right and make every possible right turn you can. Eventually you'll reach a Stone Gate. Click on it to open it. Remember to recast sneak/silent oil if it wears off. Proceed the same way guiding it to the right, you'll get to some steps and you'll see a series of arches on that path. This leads to Norg.

Once in there, go to the right and you can either go up through the path on your right (past the chocobo). Go all the way to the end of the hall and you'll find Jaucribaix. Talk to him and he'll tell you about the ways of a samurai and inform you he needs a Bomb Steel and Sacred Branch. Next, go down the long steps and talk to Aeka, she'll give you the Oriental Steel. To the left of the steps somewhere in the back is Ranemaud, he'll give you the Sacred Sprig.

To get back to Kazham from Norg, rent a chocobo. As you head out, guide it to the left and you'll find a path that takes you up (don't try to go back the same way you came in, because you CANNOT). Once you are on the level above just keep going all the way North to Kazham.

The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah

To get to the Sanctuary, rent a chococo in Port Jeuno and head out to Sauromugue Champaign and zone into Meriphataud Mountains. From there, head East and go to Zi'Tah, you can see it on your map at (M-4). You can also reach the Meriphataud Mountains from Tahrongi Canyon.

Make sure you have at least one hatchet with you and go east to (K-10), where you will find a sort of tunnel. Go through it all the way to (L-9) (this point doesn't show on the map) and look for a ??? on a huge tree. Use your hatchet on the ??? and a Guardian Treant will spawn. Defeat it and obtain the the Sacred Sprig. Trade the sprig to the ??? and you'll receive the Sacred Branch.

Konschtat Highlands

Go to (D-8) and head into a tunnel. At the end there will be a ???. When ready, trade the Oriental Steel to the ??? and Forger will spawn. Defeat it and he will drop a Bomb Steel.

Once you have both items, head back to Norg and talk to Jaucribaix. During the cutscene, Gilgamesh will appear and say your reward will be ready in 3 days (3 real life hours). Return after this time and you'll receive the Mumeito and the ability to become a Samurai.

This was a pretty simple quest no doubt. It did involve a lot of instant warps if you need to get around quick. Soloed at PLD57/WAR28
easy

this quest is rather easy, im a 48 war/nin with an AF axe and a viking axe. i was hitting the tree in the sanc. for about 90-100 per hit, and got hit once for 50 (Utsusumi took all the damage) not sure if i could have soloed this, as i had a 72 MNK with me. However when i went to fight the bomb, i had a level 75 RDM with me, who lost connection as i popped the nm. i thought i was dead. hit it for about 90-120 with 150dmg 2x on crit hits, and Raging Axe for 300. it got me to about 30% hp before it died. as far as damage it did to me, i was fine untill it used Berserk, then it was hitting for 90 and 110 once on a crit hit. Cant wait to try this job out, seems fun

this job has to be the best job i have played as i love it more than any job i have played but the mobs in Zi'tah own my lvl 30 war so i took a lvl 60 drg with me and he totaly owned the tree and he made the bomb look weak but since the samurai needs dex what items do you recomend for a 20sam/10war and what sushi is best for that lvl
Horrible Guide
# Jun 23 2006 at 7:13 AM Rating: Decent
Honestly we don't need insturctions to norg, and it's so run together I missed talking to the third npc in norg and had to go back from zi'tah.

Anyway Tried to solo the treant as 42DRG/21THf got owned, went back as /21WHM with pro II up and regen at start, paralyzed him and poked away, spammed dia when my health got low and eventualy won.

The bomb did the same thing but it self destructed for 327 and killed me x.x still got the drop though ^^

and how does a 45BLm get aggro from a too weak elemental?

RE: Horrible Guide

Maybe because as they said...they were casting? Too Weak or not...a magic aggro mob will aggro you...just like a Too Weak can aggro you when resting
RE: Horrible Guide
# Jun 27 2006 at 10:40 PM Rating: Decent
than explain how I didn't get aggro when I started to spam Dia? aggro to magi is like any other aggro it has to be mid EP+ to aggro you. and there was the earth elemental sitting right next to me through the whole fight.

Forger killed me!!

Maybe this will help someone else.

I'm a BLM-45/WHM. Just for grins I tried to solo Forger. Just after he popped, an Earth Element popped in the cave and agroed me as well because I was casting. The Earth Element wasn't all that big of a deal, but between the 2 of them I was having trouble getting my spells off. Even then my most powerful spells were only hitting Forger for only so much. Don't try to sleep him, but you can Bind him pretty easily. Even then I only got about 1/4 of his HP down before I died.

The sucky part is that when you die, and you've traded your steel to the ???.... you loose it. The only way to get it back is to go back to Norg and trade Jaucribaix's assistant (the one with the black pony tail at the bottom of the stairs) a dark steel ore (which I bought at AH for 30,000 gil) :(. Then she will give you the replacement item you need again to trade to the ??? to bring Forger out again.

I cannot stress that enough.

Soloed bomb and tree as 46THF/NIN. Tree was harder than the bomb, but thats not saying much. Just keep shadows up and bring blind and bloody bolts (even though you probably wont need em)

I finally did it!
Had a 75BST/37WHM "helping" me. it was nearly impossible to lose. Just some info, the place on the tree you need to cut is on the far left, not in the middle. ^^;;; found that out. Good luck future samurai of Vana Diel!
Tossed, not lost, Oriental Steel
# May 05 2006 at 11:01 PM Rating: Decent
My friend threw out his Oriental Steel -- he did not lose it to the Forger, he simply gave up on being able to do this quest for the time being.

The NPC is supposed to trade you an Oriental Steel if you trade her a Darksteel Ore. She does not -- she acts like he still has the Steel.

Is he SOL?

54PLD/26BLM (blm subbed to use warp to speed things up). Wasn't even a problem.. Tree probably did the most damage, but put Ice Spikes up to keep him paralyzed and just Cure 3'd once or twice and he went down. Red Lotus worked well. Bomb was even easier, didn't need to cure, and if you save TP for berserk even a PLD can lay down a pretty devastating Fast Blade D:
wow what a let down

I soloed this a 51BST/25WHM. My CC never got below half life during either of the fights and I didn't even use my 2hour. And here I got all worried for nothing. The hardest part of this quest is having to wait 3 hours at the end of it ><

OK I fancied a laugh with this one, I had some buffer into 50 and thought what the hell.

Subbed NIN for dual wield, and utsusemi, although with stoneskin and blink I didnt use utsu.

The battles were actually closer than I had thought. By far the Treant was the easiest of the two, no real problems, although as stated keep blink / ss up as much as possible. Enfeebles too, paralyze is your best friend here as both mobs hit fast.

The bomb particularly loves to Berserk, and laid waste to my buffs - dual wield and enbliz knocked him down, I did 2hr chainspell near the end of the fight to get myself cured in time but the battle wasnt life threatening as I had plenty of MP.

So, RDMs out there at 50, if you are bored, go for it - they are good battles for your level - if I had any kind of help it would have made these a walkover, as it was solo, I did feel my heart pounding on the forger.

Good stuff.

Okay, so, if you do this as a party, you have to wait a few moments for the ??? to recover in the Highlands. As for the Zi'Tah, after the party has defeated the big ugly tree of doom, other party members only need to trade their Sacred Sprigs to the ??? on the big tree to get their Sacred Branches. Easy fights with a 50WHM and 60RDM.
Pretty easy
# Feb 04 2006 at 7:24 AM Rating: Decent
As a 60 SAM/RNG... was very easy, helped both of my friends who wanted to become a SAM so I said what the hell. We did all the fights twice, except for the bomb three times cause someone was waiting there and asked for help =)

One shotted the bomb with Sidewinder every time. The Treant was a little harder, but was still cake... pulled with Sidewinder, Meditated and did a Yuki and he was gone.

Only problem is my friends forgot Hatchets so I had to warp to Jeuno and buy them some and come all the way back xD
Solo as Hume WHM47/BLM23
# Feb 03 2006 at 9:00 PM Rating: Decent
Needed two Yagudo Drinks. Blaze Spikes is a must as it deals a lot of damage.
Start with Aquaveil, Stoneskin, Blaze Spikes, Haste. And keep that guy Paralyzed and Slow always.
Used up all my MP and got me down to half of my HP at the end.
Solo'd
# Jan 20 2006 at 10:32 AM Rating: Good
I knew Forger would be cake, but I was a little unsure about the Treant. They were pretty much the same - three Fire IIIs (563 dmg each) and two Fire IIs (281 dmg each). So I'd guess around 2000-2500 HP. I ate a Fish Mithkabob for insurance, but it usually missed me (169 evasion), blink absorbed 2 hits, and with stoneskin the 3 hits it did get in only took away 8 HP a piece.
SAM Quest mobs
# Jan 10 2006 at 8:59 AM Rating: Decent
Both mobs where easy for me. I went as RDM54/BLM27. Buffed up before the fights with Stoneskin/Phalanx/Haste/Aquaveil/Refresh and basically beat them into submission with my crimson sword and enspells. I tossed a couple of nukes out once or twice and used blaze spikes with the treant fight. I also threw out debuffs like Slow and Paralyze. Those really helped and made it easy to regain Stoneskin when it dropped. Forger was definitely harder than the tree IMO. He got my HP yellow a couple of times but I was never in too much danger. All in all easy fights. I think its gonna be harder finding my way through the jungle to get back to Norg!
Question about the ore..
# Jan 01 2006 at 11:31 PM Rating: Decent
i was gonna help a friend with this, but he said he died fighting the bomb and lost the item used to spawn it. does he have to go back to norg for a new one, or if he touches the ??? will the mob respawn?
