Summary

A lump of Bomb Steel and a Sacred branch are required to make a new katana. You will have to ask Jaucribaix's pupils to find out where you can get these items.

Walkthrough

To begin this quest, you will need to speak to Jaucribaix in Norg.

To get there, rent a chocobo in Kazham and head all the way south to the outpost. Stay in Yuhtunga Jungle and beware the holes. Two are connected to each other and will bring you back out to the Outpost and another will take you nowhere. You will need to fall through the hole nearest to the waterfall. Head outside and straight towards the right side of the waterfall as you see it. This will take you to Sea Serpent Grotto.

Once at Sea Serpent Grotto, you want to either have Sneak on you or use silent oil. Once you are set, stick to your right and make every possible right turn you can. Eventually you'll reach a Stone Gate. Click on it to open it. Remember to recast sneak/silent oil if it wears off. Proceed the same way guiding it to the right, you'll get to some steps and you'll see a series of arches on that path. This leads to Norg.

Once in there, go to the right and you can either go up through the path on your right (past the chocobo). Go all the way to the end of the hall and you'll find Jaucribaix. Talk to him and he'll tell you about the ways of a samurai and inform you he needs a Bomb Steel and Sacred Branch. Next, go down the long steps and talk to Aeka, she'll give you the Oriental Steel. To the left of the steps somewhere in the back is Ranemaud, he'll give you the Sacred Sprig.

To get back to Kazham from Norg, rent a chocobo. As you head out, guide it to the left and you'll find a path that takes you up (don't try to go back the same way you came in, because you CANNOT). Once you are on the level above just keep going all the way North to Kazham.

The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah

To get to the Sanctuary, rent a chococo in Port Jeuno and head out to Sauromugue Champaign and zone into Meriphataud Mountains. From there, head East and go to Zi'Tah, you can see it on your map at (M-4). You can also reach the Meriphataud Mountains from Tahrongi Canyon.

Make sure you have at least one hatchet with you and go east to (K-10), where you will find a sort of tunnel. Go through it all the way to (L-9) (this point doesn't show on the map) and look for a ??? on a huge tree. Use your hatchet on the ??? and a Guardian Treant will spawn. Defeat it and obtain the the Sacred Sprig. Trade the sprig to the ??? and you'll receive the Sacred Branch.

Konschtat Highlands

Go to (D-8) and head into a tunnel. At the end there will be a ???. When ready, trade the Oriental Steel to the ??? and Forger will spawn. Defeat it and he will drop a Bomb Steel.

Once you have both items, head back to Norg and talk to Jaucribaix. During the cutscene, Gilgamesh will appear and say your reward will be ready in 3 days (3 real life hours). Return after this time and you'll receive the Mumeito and the ability to become a Samurai.

I was able to accomplish killing the two mobs with help from a level 50 DRK/25 WAR, while I was a 31 BLM/15 WHM. They were so easy we joked about going for pizza while our characters fought. The Guardian Treant was definitely the harder of the two, because the DRK's blows were landing for less damage, so the fight just dragged on longer than the Forger fight, but we were still pretty much bored. I cast a couple enfeebles, cured the DRK a couple times just to keep him in the white, and otherwise didn't do much.

Well, I completed the Samurai Quest last night. I got help from a lvl 66 RDM/33 WHM. We had absoluetly no trouble at all. I would like to remind everyone that you DO NOT have a map of Zi'Tah by default. I've heard both that you can buy the map and that you have to quest the map. I not sure which it is. Either way, make sure that someone you go with has the map or knows where they are going. Anyways, from Port Jeuno, we chocoed out to Zi'Tah and the tree. Once at the tree we had no problem. Right after I used the hatchet on the tree he spawned and hit me twice. After that the RDM made short work of him. From there we met a WHM that gave us Teleport-Dem and soon we found ourselves at the ??? for the Forger. Once again, with the high level help he was No problem at all. After the battle I ran to Bastok to change jobs, ghetto warped back to my home point in Norg and turned in the Sacred Branch and Bomb Steel. Three hours later I became a Samurai. Good luck to all who do this quest. I think being a Samauri is going to be awesome!

Also, my thanks to the writer of this guide. Very precise and accurate. Thank you.

Just finished this one last night. Forger is kind of a joke if you have a couple 40s with you. The Treant is pretty rough though. I had a 56WAR and 55 RDM with me. They made short work of it, but yeah, any parties in the 30s would be wise to seek higher level help. The trig to Norg is easy once you make the Grotto. Sneak+hugging right wall=easy trip.

I got DCed in my fight vs Forger and didn't get the item. Went back to Norg to get the item again, but you can only get one if you trade a Darksteel Ore for it. On my server they run 6k.
BLM versus tree

Friend in my LS, Yenyoji, soloed the tree at 45. Yenyoji was 46BLM/23WHM at the time. She had little trouble with it.

I opened the samurai quest a long time ago, just because I was in Norg and I figured "might as well". I carried the Oriental Steel and the Sacred Sprig around with me for months before deciding that they were just congesting my inventory, and I decided to throw them away.

Yesterday, I helped a friend get to Norg so that he could start the sam quest, and when I talked to the two apprentices they told me that to get another Oriental Steel I would have to trade them a darksteel ore, and to get another Sacred Sprig they want a platinum ore and two gold ore (!!).

It's no big deal for me -- I'm a little taru mage who may never become a samurai -- but getting these items a second time is costly, so hold on to them and don't waste them!
No problem for 50 monk

I'm going to have to guess that a monk level 41 (because of raging fists), or maybe 42 can solo both NMs (with 100 fists- gotta wait 2 hours in between fights).

I did it at 50 and I was too powerful for them.

Forger: fish mithkabob and switched out my jujitsu gear for shinobi gear (soloing wear). Raised tp to 100 first, then traded steel. Raging fist did 638 damage, then hundred fist did the rest. Fight didn't even last 1 minute, and the forger only hit me twice- each about 47. I chakra and I was back to 100% health.

Guardian Treant: Forgot to bring fish mith, so used meat mith, equipped shinobi gi and hakama once again. I didn't raise tp to 100 this time, so just started with 100 fists. I was too busy taking screenshots when I remembered to do Raging fist, treant was almost dead. Did it anyway, RF smacked the last 250 of his life away. Fight didn't last even a minute once again, but the treant did nearly 200 damage to me (of my 1122 total hp). Not bad, but still laughably easy.

Any monks out there who still have not done it? Try it at 41~43 range, you'll probably kill them no problem.

Soloed as 46 Pld/War

Soloed the Forger as a 46 Pld/War.
Started with 840 HP / 236 MP. Had to use 2 Cure III's, and I ended the fight with @ 400 HP / 144 MP.

Piece of cake, didn't even use any special abilities or spells (other than the cures on myself); I did eat a meat mithkabob. My equip is very good, but nothing special. I wonder what happens if you LOSE the fight? Or if you do it in a party and someone else gets the special item?

I soloed Forger as a 45 RDM/22 WHM, and just soloed the Guardian Treant as a 50 RDM/25 WHM. On the latter: Protect III, Shell II, Stoneskin, Phalanx, Refresh, and Divine Seal + Cure III helped (low mp prohibited Cure IV). I didn't even need to Convert.

I just solo'd Forger as a 49 Paladin. Had Protect and Shell 2 and a Fish Chiefkabob on. After beserk he could still hit me for up to 50 damage, but usually in the 20-30 range. I finished the battle with around 300 something HP (Out of 796) and 2 MP (Out of 249). Considerering this, would I at all be able to solo the tree? Keep in mind I used a crappy sword on Forger (Hunting Sword Level 34, 27 Damage).

If I die against Forger, how do I get another Oriental Steel?
I don't really want to have to walk all the way back to Norg and realize I forgot to get a certain item.

You have to give Aeka, in Norg, a Darksteel Ore. My friend just had to do this last night. :(
