Last night, immediately after the newest update (the one changing the exp requirements for 50+) I got this quest first time I asked for it.

I am a level 22 RDM / Windurstian / Rank 2 / Windurst fame level 3 (verified that 5 minutes before I spoke to the NPC)

Bought the earring for 1000 gil, and got my wrapped bow. Simple.

Was running from Boyahda Tree, killing the Goblins and Golems as I went along, then when I got into Meriphataud Mountains, near the Sauromugue Champaign zone, killed four Hill Lizards, and got drops on the first two I killed.
Goes for 1,000g on Cerberus Auction, sells for 300g at Vendor.

This is a great quest for raising Windurst fame. However, there is a drawback. You have to zone out of Windurst Woods and back in every time you wish to turn in an earring.

Not so bad for anyone with the spell Warp and the backalleys unlocked, though. Here's a little trick:

1) Enter your Mog House or Rent-a-Room in Windurst.
2) Switch to another job.
3) Exit Mog House to a different Windurst zone, like Waters.
4) When prompted to set Home Point, choose 'yes.'
5) Reenter Mog House and switch to BLM (or BLM subjob).
6) Exit to Windurst Woods.
7) Turn in your Twinstone Earring.
8) Cast Warp.
9) You should appear in Windurst Waters (or wherever you set home point) right outside your Mog House.
10) Reenter Mog House (refilling your MP instantly) and exit to Windurst Woods.
11) Repeat steps 6 through 10 as needed. This is the fastest way to do this quest.

When I did all this, a few months ago, all the Twinstone Earrings in the world were selling for around 1k each. Since you get 900 gil for each one turned in, that's not much expense for such easy fame. I bought like 48 of them, from all over Vana'Diel, and turned them all in. Brought me from level 4 to level 8 fame.

Hope that helps!

Save yourself 1 black zoning screen, and don't do step 5; instead, do 2.a : switch jobs back to black mage. The game records the fact that you changed jobs inside the Mog House, but not how many times, nor that you switched back.
Earring Drop
# Jun 07 2004 at 9:33 PM Rating: Decent
These twinstone earrings are the 'rare' drop (comparatively) from the Hill Lizards in Meriphataud Mountains, so if you sub a THF at level 30, Treasure Hunter will help immensely. I do this occasionally for some quick gil, and with Treasure Hunter the lizards drop the earrings 2/3 times for me. Happy hunting.

I hunted these Hill Lizards at lvl 25, got 3 drops in less than an hour, perhaps because all of Meriphitaud Mountains was emptier than a Warriors heart with no honor in it. This has been a common drop for me, and before I heard about this quest, I threw away 5 of these. Tried to get the quest, but I'm not famous anywhere yet, so I suppose it's back to the grindstone. I will get that wrapped bow... if only to give to my friend.
not given at L8

Edit:
Windurst Fame level 3 is required to get this quest. The fame dude in Windurst needs to respond: "Oh, you're the <name> that people are starting to talk about. I've heard good things about you."
Just got this quest as L9 BLM Wndurst Rank 3, and fame level 3.

Prerequisite quest?
# Jan 01 2004 at 3:53 AM Rating: Default
I tried to get Gioh Ajihri to give me this quest at least 10 different times with different numbers of completed quests each time (as high as 23). The thing that finally triggered it for me was to complete the Mihgo's Amigo quest.

The Amigo quest isn't a prerequisite. I received this quest long before I even accepted the Amigo quest. (I have better things to do with Bead Necklaces.)

The prerequisite is simply to have the required level of fame, believed to be rank 3 in Windurst. You can get that fame from any sufficient set of quests.
can do at level 15

Hill lizards can definitely be taken by a full party of level 14-15's. You want to have at least one good tank and probably two. two healers if possible (liz will tend to hit for 30-35 normal and 60 crits to level 15 tanks), and whatever other damage dealers you need. If you take care to fight the easier ones, make sure not to let them link, and dont go all that deep into mephtaud mountains (theres virtually no aggros in the section from where you enter right up until the road bends and starts going east to the spine) then you can actually do this quest pretty easy and at this level make good xp per kill, though the lizards arent all that plentiful so you dont get a very good kill rate.

Watch the poison attack, it does 3 damage per tick, which one time killed me after the battle was over because I was so relieved to have barely survived that i didnt notice my HP was draining so fast and the healers were resting so they didnt respond in time.. well you get the point..

you don't need to be level 20 to get this quest...
i'm at level 13 when i got it and now i'm level 14...
it's true that you can't handle the Hill Lazard until you are higher level...but...if you in a group...you can...
#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 11 2003 at 6:49 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I think I was traveling around on my chocobo in this area when I was just checking monsters stats, it said that hill lizards were easy, with low def and eva for me. I'm a lvl 23 white mage. I think it's best to do this at a higher level solo, so when it does drop the item, it's for you own selfish needs and gains :D.

Translation
# Nov 24 2003 at 1:36 AM Rating: Decent
Just FYI, since no one seems to have mentioned it yet... the Japanese word that corresponds to the English "Earring" is actually translated into "Piercer." Not piercer as in a crude spear, but piercer as relates to piercing. Makes sense if you think about it.

The Twinstone Earrings is what's required for the ques, not a piercer.
how rare?
# Nov 15 2003 at 5:35 AM Rating: Default
Gioh is a cat girl, not a 'he'. but the question is how rare is thie twin stone piercer? i spend 2 hr killing lizards and all i got was a pair of Twinstone Earrings and some hides.
