Summary

The Mana Orb the Star Onion Brigade "confiscated" from the Cat Burglar has gone missing. In order to track down the culprit, the gang will need the seven gadgets found in the Junior Investigator's toolkit! Pichichi will tell you what to bring.

Walkthrough

If you've just completed the quest Know One's Onions then you will need to zone before talking to Kohlo-Lakolo for the next quest.

The Star Onion Brigade needs gadgets for their Junior Investigator's Toolkit. Talk to Pichichi for information. She will tell you to talk to her mother, Chamama in Windurst Waters (F-10). She needs you to collect 4 balls of Saruta Cotton. These are dropped by Pygmaioi in Tahrongi Canyon. Trade these to her and she will give you a key item: Fake Moustache to take back to Kohlo-Lakolo.

Edit: I forgot it's acctualy a "Fake Mustache" but who cares anyways! She Cast's Flare and it makes something! WTF!!

In order to get this quest, I completed 10 other Windurst quests exactly. I didn't do any repeat quests, and I checked between other quests to see if I could get this one. (I did the previous SOB quests too, of course.)
maybe this is it
# Mar 26 2004 at 11:02 PM Rating: Decent
most of these quests, i think you have to fight at least one battle in between their activation. . . if you have fought one and still cant get it, i guess i dont really know. . . but i know thats all you have to do after the first quest (for the justice badge) to be able to accept the second one

Can't get this quest

I finished the Onion quest (the one where you have to go to the hero's house) however, I had left the area and come back before going to the hero's house so when I spoke to the kids they said I missed it. (meaning going to the hero's house) But I still remember the girl having the mana orb. . Later I went back to SanDoria where I am from and when I came back and tried to get the inspector's quest all they talk about is the first rule..
Anyone know how to get this quest again? Do I have to REzone after I get the first rule message?
I am now in the Canyon, is that considered rezoning?
If I go back should I get the quest then?
I had another character who did the quests right...and he still hadn't found chamama the right stone for her pickles... he was able to get the moustache quest .. but he's deleted :)
I now have the cotton and can't get the doggone quest! what gives?

Sar Cotton Problems
# Feb 16 2004 at 5:40 PM Rating: Decent
I tried to buy the cotton from the weavers guild to save some hunting time, but when i try to buy it, it's greyed out and i cannot select it. I have empty inventory slots, so thats not the problem. I know i can get these from the auction house, but the price difference is crazy. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
RE: Sar Cotton Problems
# Feb 18 2004 at 8:27 PM Rating: Decent
That would be because you *are* buying from the guild. Normal shops do not close, nor do they ever run out of materials. However, all guilds have holidays, time frames in which they are open, and inventory limits. If it is greyed out, then you can not buy until either someone else sells cotton to the vendor, or the next day comes and some are in stock.

This applies to all guilds.
RE: Sar Cotton Problems
# Feb 19 2004 at 2:37 PM Rating: Decent
actually shops do run out of stock. at the beginning of every day the shop is restocked so you better be there to buy early. im not sure how the amount is determined
RE: Sar Cotton Problems
# Feb 27 2004 at 11:31 AM Rating: Default
well i was checking prices on my world and at the guild and i saw i could buy saruta cotton 1k per stack and sell it for 4k on the AH. thinking i just found a loophole(btw this game has NONE i have 60 game days of playing in). when i tryed i had realized that they only sell 1 per game day. and they do get bought every day as far as i saw it.
RE: Sar Cotton Problems
# Apr 29 2004 at 6:53 PM Rating: Default
It's not a loophole if you're the first person at the guild when it opens and are able to buy it for 1k a stack, then resell for 4k?

Yeah good luck with that. I try my hardest to buy Arrowwood Lumber from the woodworking guild everyday but it's ALWAYS old out.

I've managed to buy 1 piece but that's it. I've camped the damn place at least a dozen times.

Usually wind up buying logs and then turning them into lumber....

Doesn't really seem to be a good reward at the level in which it takes to gather the cotton balls from the canyon. you would think that a better reward would be in order... just a thought.

You can also harvest the cotton in West Saru - not the most common of the harvests but you can do that at any level.

You can get balls of cotton off the Mandrogas in east or west saru; I did so at level 5 as a thief, I've stolen them since then for friends and n00bs by the dozen.

When reporting quests, it would be extremely helpful to utilize the grid system present on the in-game maps.

Thanks.

in order to finish "Know One's Onion" u need to go to the house with a locked door in Windust Wall and check on the door. when u do that a cut scene will start and after that u just go back to behind the warehouse in Port Windust and talk to Kohlo-Lakolo again to finish the quest. then talk to him again to start the new quest

I'm a mnk 9 and rank 2 but I the npc still won't give me the quest. I've completed the pickle quest so that can't be a prereq. So I'm assuming you have to be level 11 or you need to do an unrelated quests first.

I guess you have already solved this by now but to help others Ill post my thoughts anyway...
I had just the same problem and my guess is that the solution to it might be to do the In a pickle quest first and then try again.

RE: So this has to be done after Wild Onions?

The order of the the quest from this same NPC as I remember is:
1. Rarab Tail
2. 4 Wild Onions
3. 4 Saru Cottons

I don't believe I went back to this NPC to see if there's anymore quests that he offers, but I should go check if I'm ever in the area
