Mission Orders

Exterminate bats from King Ranperre's Tomb, and bring back proof of your deeds.

Walkthrough

Quick Walkthrough

Here's a short version for the impatient/lacking in attention span. A great, detailed version you really should read follows; consider this an outline.

For initial 1-2:

  1. Go to H-11 in East East Ronfaure.
  2. Make your way through the underground tunnel to the mazey bit
  3. Once in the bit in 'maze' kill Ding Bats until you get Orcish Mail Scales
  4. Make sure you get to, click on, and see the cutscene at the tombstone

For repeat of 1-2:

  1. Go to H-11 in East East Ronfaure.
  2. Kill Mouse Bats and collect Bat Fangs
  3. Turn in bat fangs one at a time

Detailed Walkthrough

The Gate Guard tells you about the King's Tomb and that there are reports it's been tampered with. You're sent to go and check it out and bring back evidence if it has.

The Tomb is at (H-11) in Ronfaure East... very south of the map.

A Level 5 character can take this quest by the horns and with some luck kill a Ding Bat in the second upper level section of the Tomb Zone... but will have to be very careful... or just follow others around the zone. There's always someone in there cleaning out the creatures for exp or whatnot. In part 2 there are 2 mazes one leads to something for a later quest... and one leads to a headstone. You'll want to approach the headstone and see the cut scene about 'Ron-boy' who speaks to the headstone like the king yet lived.

IF you don't see the cut scene you haven't 'completed' the mission even if you have 90 pieces of Orcish Chain Scales. After the cut scene slip back out and back to the Gate Guard.

If you decide to redo this mission you kill the Mouse Bats in the first underground section for their bat fangs. Which you can only turn in one at a time. For a Level 8 Red Mage turning in 6 bat fangs netted a full "rank 1 points" meter but did not grant rank 2. Perhaps more are needed.

Head to East Ronfaure.

Head to (H-11)

Enter zone and thus The First Upper Level Section (and maze).

Bad Guys:

The Maze is basially 'Y' shaped. Go left, right, right OR right, left, left to reach the entrance to the first underground section.

The First Underground Section is pretty straight forward.

Bad Guys:

  • Mouse Bats (varying levels BE CAREFUL. Some are easy some are potent to lethal, AND they gang up if you attack (aka social for other mousebats))
  • Goblin Thugs
  • Goblin Weavers
  • Stone Eaters (worm type... casts stone when you're in range. if you have to you can run past them and just eat the damage)

Left is mostly Mouse Bats... until a T Junction... Right is a mix of Mouse Bats and some Goblin Thugs and Goblin Weavers... then the previously mentioned T junction. You could go around the donut all day if you like if you need Mouse Bats Fangs (second time through). The respawn rate's fairly decent... even with the place's popularity.

When you continue passed the T junction the first big area might have Stone Eaters. Be Warned about their stone casting. Both can hit you if you aren't careful. From there it's mostly bare tunnel (with ambient sounds for stepping in bat guano. bleah.) with pauses for bats... and some big areas where goblins might hang out. (Again assuming someone didn't wipe the place out before you got in.)

Follow the Stairs up to Upper Area 2.

Bad Guys:

This area's been known to just be crawling with Carrion Worms, and the occasional Ding Bat flotilla. There are a mess of Goblins that will of course help each other in a pinch.

There are 2 Mazes... the one right near you... leads to a flat surface with a "???" Click point that is Underground Area 2 for a Later level quest. If you find yourself in there... turn around. Also the other cave like entrance is probably a Goblin lair. Not your goal right now either.

In the opposite corner is the entrance to maze 2... (best way is head forward from the stairs to the wall in the distance... then head left all the way until you're almost at the corner then turn left and enter the opening in the wall) and at the heart of that mini labyrinth is the Headstone of the King... just walk up and double click it like an NPC and the cut scene will start.

You may now head back the way you came, leave the tomb zone and head back to San d'Oria. The Gate Guard will reward you with some rank points and you can now try Mission 1-3 (if you're say level 11).

Second Run through you can just follow the "donut". Bat Fangs are fairly rare drops from the Mouse bats. All wings can be turned in for money (details elsewhere)

MAP DATA: Upper Level 2

  • E= Entry Point to this map
  • G= Goblin caves? "Mission 1-2" doesn't require.
  • C= Cave (of Death) "Mission 1-2" doesn't require.
  • T= Ranperre's Tomb. You must get here to get the cut scene to finish mission.

Only the turns are to scale. The distances are not. But are fairly close.

Grid Location is H-11
but to get to it go to East Ronfaure, follow the path until u get to a fork, take any side, you will reach a bridge, go into the river and follow it into you reach another bridge, follow the path there east, you will reach another fork, go south and follow it until you reach the ruins thing, just explore around until you find the entrance.

Plus if you want a map of the place complete the exit the gambler quest, its quite easy and I managed to not lose any gil (spent 10 gil won 10 gil)

Just so everyone knows. You can turn in stuff until you are blue in the face. But you will only have a full rank 1 bar (basically 2), but it won't award rank 2 until you do the rescue the apprentice quest.

tomb location

Just did this tonight solo lvl 9 blk mage.

To get to the tomb.

Go in the front door and curl around to the back. Take the staircase down.

Go forward until you get to a big grey cave with lots of wind. There will be a T junction. Take left, and stay left all the way until you come out to a maze on grass (kind of on the surface again... there is sky). Then take left and stay left again all the way to the tomb (it curls around the outside to the middle right). The tombstone is in the center right of the grassy area. While there tonight I saw two guys turn around and go back in the grey cave when they saw the grass. Careful, the grass area does not read as k ronperre's tomb on your regional info, it reads as the one above it again. The grey cave before it reads as k ronperre's tomb.

Note, watch out for enchanted bones in the grassy area(some are tougher than others). They can cast too. There can be up to 3 outside and 3 inside with the tomb. Do NOT hang around right beside the tombstone longer than getting the cutscene. The spook spawns there with 3 enchanted bones. Happened while I was standing there. Stay the away from the spook. He spawned and attacked someone watching the cutscene until the camper pulled him. He appears to have around 200hp and is a casting nasty. Frequently someone will be camping him, but that still leaves you vs 3 enchanted bones while they're busy. A lvl 9 blk mage has no problem at all with a single enchanted bones. Or even two sequentially. Try not to take them on all at once.

Also, the bat that dropped the orc scales for me in the grassy area was a lot tougher than the other ding bats around it. Not sure it was a ding bat (I thought it was when I attacked it, but then it took 2 aeros and 2 stones to drop it). Later I noticed a "wind bat" right beside a group of ding bats by the entrance, the name looks very similar, he turned out to be roughly the same strength as the one that dropped my first orc scales (but I don't know cause this time he broke my bind instantly and just barely killed me before I dropped him).

Wind bats are NOT the same as Ding bats. Just as a warning, the Wind Bats originate in the second tunnel and are lvl 9-11 -- a very tough fight for a lvl13 thief. Any you see running around the Tomb have probably chased someone out of the tunnels, so be careful.
Ding Bats drop the scales; they should be relatively easy (lvl 2-5).
Stone Eaters in the caves can cause problems; they're 5-7 and aggro, but you can just run past them if you need to.
You can re-do this quest once you've turned in the Scales; on redo, however, you need bat fangs. These seem to be dropped by the Mouse Bats in the first cave. Good way to earn Rank Points.

I just got through with the quest myself after numberous setbacks (death, not dropping the scales, not accepting the scales,) and hope I can use part of my experience to help people who can't seem to get it to work.

If you HAVE orc mail scales, but the gate guard won't accept them, make SURE that you visit the actual tombstone itself and watch the cutscene. If you don't observe the cutscene first, he won't accept the scales and will send you back. The tomb is in the area AFTER you proceed through the caverns, where you re-emerge into level ground (either through the brick stairs or the natural cave.) Refer to the official map above for directions to the cave from your exit.

If you NEED the scales, only bats in the local area will drop them. They appear primarily at night, but many people seem to have a very hard time finding them because of the very low drop rate... so keep trying - you'll eventually get some! As a side note - bats from *any* area in the tomb will drop them, not just around the tombstone or in the caves. I, myself, got mine as I was literally leaving to give up, next to the exit.

You ONLY need bat fangs if you're repeating the quest (although I don't see why on earth anyone would bother doing so - it was frustrating enough the first time through. Plus, the first one is much easier to redo for rank.) ALL bat species will drop bat fangs, but the drop rate is generally fairly rare.

Good luck... and don't give up or get bored. Just keep trying, and eventually you'll get it! :)

Went To The Tomb
# Nov 08 2003 at 1:53 AM Rating: Default
Zone was just about clear when I ran there. Went to the tomb, did the cutscene. then waited at the tomb (some people were there to kill the spook) until night time, killed the first 2 dingbats to pop at the tomb, both had "a handful of orcish mail scales" in your inventory its just "Orcish Mail Scales"

seems to be a common drop around the tomb perhaps? I think so.

Just the Fangs.

Though if you find yourself with alot of wings... there's that Secondid guy who's more than happy to buy them off you in pairs.

can someone post the map coords for the tombstone?
RE: map coords
# Nov 06 2003 at 2:17 PM Rating: Decent
I tried the other day to get the exact Letter-Number coordinates for the Tombstone itself after I got the map... and of course I was slaughtered on the way...

But then with how big the gridsquares are... Saying it's in I-10 covers alot of ground.

So I-10... but that's still not good for anything but carpet bombing the gridsquare... which can only be done in the real world. ^.~

(corrected from H-10 to I-10... not that again it's very helpful to know the grid reference. But I finally got back in there and stepped all the way up to the bugger to make sure. I should have said H~I-10 but that would basically be the whole blasted maze ^^; Bad enough saying I-10, as that almost includes the Cave to Jugner Forest.)

fangs/wings doesn't work if you're a first timer for this quest. I've tried... only orcish scale will work.
I did it
# Nov 02 2003 at 7:06 PM Rating: Default
I completed the mission by getting Orcish Scales off of a Ding Bat. Ding Bats only come out at night. I was next to the gravestone when I found a bat that dropped the scales. Try sticking around that area.

It can be any Ding Bat in that 'zone'. We were there last night fighting and had them drop near the entrence of the zone area.

So any ding bat will suffice. You do need to visit the grave in the secon above ground area. Not the platform but the headstone, which is in the Eastern square section of the maze.

For anyone poking around exploring, the platform in the western square area leads to higher level bats. They con 'very tough' to a lvl 9 warr in a group of 4 people (I havent done much checking regarding con solo vs. con group).

Please tell me how in gods name your doing this at level 5.I went in 3 times, each with at least 2 other party members, and the goblins there would tear us apart in seconds...and were level 13!What in gods name...
RE: I did it

I did this as a BLM9 with no sub. All you have to do is be patient, wait til the gobs turn away and run behind them so they don't see you. The ding and mouse bats don't aggro. Or if you're lucky, a higher level character will be clearing them out. Try to time it so you arrive at the tombstone for the cutscene when it's daytime. Skeletons pop there at night and will whack your butt even if you are watching the cutscene.
RE: I did it
# Nov 04 2003 at 3:17 PM Rating: Default
They should con as "run the hell away" if there was such a beast. They do 248 there abouts damage to a level 8 Red Mage with about 30 total points of armor.

It's too bad they're aggressive or I might have mapped down there too. Well until something killed me. Something always kills me in that zone even if I make a whole level in there (getting those fangs I didn't need...)

Argh I hate forgetting to login -.-;

Tonight I'll see if I can snag some (pos) info... not sure what good that will do sadly. But might help some who get turned around with all the "zipper" passages that my map doesn't showcase.
cutscene

how far into the tomb is the cutscene? i have the orc armor scales and the 6 fangs but he wont take them, all he says is "Have you really explored the tomb?"
RE: cutscene
# Nov 02 2003 at 1:27 PM Rating: Default
I got the orchish scales and was heading back when suddenly I was told "You do not require the skill to hold Orchish mail scales (whatever they are called) and they disappeared from my inventory. I have seen the cutseen and am level 8. Also after that I crashed to desktop... Really sucks, I spent two nights trying to get those scales ;_;
RE: cutscene
# Nov 05 2003 at 2:59 PM Rating: Default
I have had the same message about not having the skill to hold items; I believe that happens when you pick up loot after your inventory is full, and the extra loot goes into the "treasure holding area" (for lack of a better term) the same way it does when you are in a group. If you don't make room for it in your regular inventory within a min or so, you lose it and get that message. I had it happen with several items, and as I cleared a space in my inventory, an item would be "recovered" from that holding area if I was quick enough. :)
Two steps.
# Nov 02 2003 at 4:36 AM Rating: Default
You have to see the cutscene at the tombstone before the guard will take the orc armor scales.

First time through the mission you need the scales. If you re-do it later, that's when you use fangs.
Here's how.
# Nov 02 2003 at 4:34 AM Rating: Good
The first time you do this mission, you need to do two things.

1) Trigger the cutscene at the tombstone itself.
2) Get an Orcish Armor Scale from the Ding Bats (only they drop it).

You can try to give the guard the scales, but if you haven't seen the cutscene, he won't actually take them.

You can re-do mission 2 if you want - if you re-do it, that's when you use bat fangs.

why are the orcish scales so important if bat fangs or wings work for this?I befriended a high level player to get it and now i dont know why he wanted it so bad.I want to know before i turn it in to the npc.I might just go back for proof that is a little less rare.
Orc scales
# Nov 01 2003 at 11:42 PM Rating: Default
The orc scale will drop off the ding bats as soon as you walk in the tomb (still outside, not below the ground). However, then you have to go through the first caves, back up, and through the maze to the center, where you will find the tomb and a cutscene. After that return to the guard to finish the mission.
Location
# Nov 01 2003 at 3:26 PM Rating: Default
It's the bottom left corner of the map (East side). Also, the ding bats only spawn at night (You have to go threw the tunnel to the other side)
Location?
# Nov 01 2003 at 12:06 PM Rating: Decent
Can anyone explain how to find this place?
not bat fang
# Nov 01 2003 at 12:57 AM Rating: Default
The correct item is Orcish Mail Scales and is rare. Will drop only from the Ding bats around the tomb. About 1 in 10. If you want to kill Mouse Bats you can trade in the bat wings for 200g a pair in North SD.
