not working...

I did the quest once a long while ago. SO now I need asipir, and I came back, I have about 8-9 stacks of sardines I fished a while ago and figured this would be perfect for fame.

But he wont give me the quest anymore? I tried running out to Sarutabaruta- no quest. Zoned to Waters- no quest, Warped to HP in port- no quest.

Am I doing something wrong?

As for why your quest isnt working my suggestion is that you may have cut him off before he finished talking (you have to talk to the taru before trading each time).

He puts in a long pause before his last sentence "So, if you happen to catch yourself...."

I know i skipped that speech and thus couldnt trade to him. hope that helps
Does this quest give a title?
# Aug 11 2004 at 5:28 AM Rating: Default
I completed this quest about 30x, and while waiting for mp to regen, I thought to check what title it left me with... and saw that my title was "Crab Crusher" from running thru the bubbling bernie quest a few times earler to raise bastok fame.

Do some quests not give titles? This also seems to raise fame slowly, as 2.5 stacks of sardines havent changed the fame npc's reaction to me.

I'm getting scared by putting no-title-change + no-fame-change together, that i've wasted a couple hours (unless you call 100 profit on a 600 gil stack of fish over an hour lucrative).

Aye, it doesnt change your title, but adds to fame. I had a similar concern doing this recently. It seems to give 1/3 of a fame point for each quest completion (or something close to that). I raised fame from 2 to 4 using only this quest, and a lot of patience. At first I got scared that nothing was happening, but finally my fame raised. What confused me was that someone told me each completion raised .5 fame points, so i expected results too soon.
warp
# Jul 07 2004 at 7:56 PM Rating: Excellent
theres a home point at (F-7) that you can warp to instead of zoning, if you have the spell. Saves some time, mostly by eliminating the second pause from zoning twice. Sucks that Warp costs 100 MP though. If only a hi-ether were the reward.

I recently did this quest to raise my fame in Windy from 0 to 4. This quest is not so annoying as some people say, especially because the home point in F-7 is really very close to Tokaka.

I have 407 MP and I just kept repeating the same things: trade the bastore sardine, warp to HP, come back. When my MP was 7 (after 4 warps) I just healed and, meanwhile, did some real-life stuff. Even doing that, I took about 3 hours to repeat this quest 80 times.

It's worth noticing that you must talk to Tokaka every time before trading the sardine. This is what really slows the process down.

I will confirm that this DOES work. I just bought 3 Yagudo Drinks. Sure, it was 5k for the set of them, but it'll pay off when you get your Warp II and Aspir scroll quests that will reward you with 70k. ^^
Proof of x3 = 1?

Is there any proof that doing this quest 3 times is equal to 1 standard quests fame as is often claimed?

Fastest way to zone
# Apr 29 2004 at 5:56 AM Rating: Decent
The fastest way to zone is not by running to West Sarutabaruta or Windust Water.
You can use Machu-Kuchu's free teleport service (E-7) to warp to Windust wall and warp back.

That's not really faster. With the added time of talking to each Taru warper, and choosing yes, then waiting for the second warper to load, and warping back... you actually lose a little time. Zoning to Waters is slightly faster, as you can turn around and zone right back before everything loads, no talking to 2 NPCs.

A friend and I tested it, and you'll save about 2 seconds per trip just zoning to Windurst Waters.
Yes, it may be a slightly longer run, but the trip is effectively shorter.

Saving 1.5-2 seconds per trip really adds up the more fish you're trading in a single set of runs.

I probably only needed 1 or 2 stacks, but ran 5 stacks just to be safe.

EDIT: typos (Edits make for dbl posts o.0)

then u also have to stop to re-charge MP though! so it's not faster!
RE: Fastest way to zone
# Jun 26 2005 at 9:44 PM Rating: Decent
What does MP have to do with running? the words "zone" and "turn around" mean that he ran to the zone then turned around and ran back... not warp...

Good job though.

Er, this is a small mistake, but Tokaka isn't a guy ..

Didn't you people read the issue of the Vana'diel Tribune that talked about Tarutaru names?

At any rate, the easiest way to tell the difference? Guys have a hyphen in their name.
Advice:

If you are interested in raising your fishing skill while doing this quest, you can fish for the bastore sardines right next to the quest giver.

I'd strongly advise, if you are going to take up fishing, buy a rod that won't break, and a sabiki rig. You can catch up to 3 sardines at once and don't have to worry about buying bait.

To find a rod that won't break, try this site:

Yeah, you don't have to catch the fish to finish the quest. You can buy them, but you might end up losing some gil in the process...>.<

Plus, you (usually) will also gain some fishing skill! ^^

You do have to rezone after you give Tokaka the fish, otherwise she will keep telling you that the fisherman will cook her (your sardine) up tonite!

She will ALWAYS tell you that your fish is too small, but she still keeps it, and gives you compensation for it (70 gil).

But generally, the price is higher in vendors and AH. The fish vendor sells it for 77 gil on my server, and the AH sells it for 100(also, my server) a pop.

SquarEnix changed the price of the sardines, before it used to be under 70 gil if you buy it from the fishing guild vendor.

((If you have the "Blast from the Past" quest, she will send you to Yoran-Oran, but if you talk to her again, she will give you the Sardine quest.))

title?
# Feb 26 2004 at 6:21 PM Rating: Decent
The only th8ing this is worth is increasing your fishing skill, then increasing your fame. This is one of the 3 key fame quests(i.e., it takes 3 quests to max fame in all cities...this is one of them). But, does anyone know the title you get from this?
did they change this?
# Feb 14 2004 at 8:30 PM Rating: Default
i did it and have zoned when i go back and talk to her she tells me the thing again but nothing happens when i trade her a sardine.
exploit
# Jan 24 2004 at 7:59 AM Rating: Default
the money sux, seriously but its an exploit for fame, not money. its faster than the other repeatables where you have to kill stuff. and remember, windurst fame adds to mhaura fame
RE: Not Exploit
# Mar 26 2004 at 10:12 PM Rating: Decent
Not exploit in anyway. Quest like this help high lvl players gain fame to unlock quests (ex. Summoner quests).

Exploit would gain players something for little or no risk.

#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 19 2004 at 4:48 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) your probably better off auctioning it at AH. I traded 12 sardine and only got 70 gils.. not worth it....would be if he counted each..

70 gils.. big deal..
If you feel like spending your entire day zoning and repeating this quest, so be it.

You must talk to the Mithra Thubu Parohren (just behind Tokaka at the Fisherman's Guild) and sign up before Tokaka will give you this quest or accept any Bastore Sardines from you.
RE: Fisherman's Guild Membership Required
# Dec 10 2003 at 6:12 AM Rating: Decent
I was able to turn in a sardine before signing up with the guild.

You do not need to be part of fishing guild to do the quest, but it won't hurn to be in the guild.

I did this quest the 1st time, and I recieved 90 gil. I am a member of the fishing guild. After giving the fish, the NPC says the fishermen will make a nice meal of it. Then, the next game day I did it again and recieved 70 gil. They use these fish to determine the fishing conditions, so I assume you can do this each game day. So, for any newbies like me, that's 70-90 gil each day.

I just finished an AWFULLY long day of doing this quest using BLM34/WHM. With equip, max MP is 331.

After a few tries running to Waters and back I decided to use the Warp-to-HP method. I only had enough MP for 3 Warps at a time, but it still saved me a lot. I could've used some juices though. If you're not worried about gil and you have a BLM 17+, buy yag drinks or juice and go that route. It WILL save you time.

You can do this quest as many times per game-day as you can logistically fit. I split my time up (went to work and came home, checked AH every now and then) and I think over-all I went from 0 to 3 fame. That's with four stacks of sardines.

At three stacks I still couldn't get Aspir, and at four I could. Given the fact that I bought all my stacks at the guild (WITHOUT joining, btw) for 45 per sardine, I scored 25g per sardine, which works out to 1.2k. So is it a gil exploit? Not hardly. But it IS a good (if boring and tedious) way to get fame in Windurst and maybe clear some gil while you're at it.

I haven't yet checked Mhaura, but all my sources indicate fame there will have increased as well. I recommend this quest for anyone who needs to devote a few hours to building fame for whatever reason.

(I'll be going back to do this once again when I need my Teleports.)

I guess this was an exploit.
The other day when i did this, I KNOW the sardine on the merchant was 45 gil.

She gives you 70 GIL.
As another poster says, you can zone and do the quest AGAIN! At the time I did not know this.

It was evidnetly fixed LAST NIGHT. Today I got on and checked, after she gave me the quest again, the sardine on th vendor was 77 GIL!

So we know what happened I guess, we darn exploiting americans found out about this quest and I bet someone was buying, giving to her then doing the quest for profit, then zoning. At like 25 gil a shot you can see how they'd build up some money if bored.

lol prices at guilds change every in game day, thats why it shot up to 77gil. 25 gil is not so great you can get that from 4 low level gobs in about the time it would take you to zone, assuming you have a character of atleast level 14.

LOL you're on crack if you think people are exploiting this for a measley 30gil each attempt... and it requires rezoning!
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 12 2003 at 12:57 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) lol 25 gil isnt a exploit no one would do this. I know possibilities to get 4 k per zone thats more exploit ^^
Er. . Nm, its still 70 gil

So you still make money if you buy it from the vendor lady. However, having to run and zone to get the quest again makes this really not worth the 30 gil or so you get.
