Summary

You must prove yourself worthy before you can learn Isacio's fighting techniques.

Walkthrough

Isacio, at G-10, asks you to prove yourself and learn some survival skills. To do so, you need to bring him three items:

1. Magicked Skull - Dropped by Ghouls, which spawn in Valkurm Dunes at night. Ghouls can also be found in Gusgen Mines, Jugner Forest, Buburimu Peninsula and many other places.

2. Damselfly Worm - Dropped by Damselflies in Valkurm Dunes.

3. Crab Apron - Dropped by Snippers in Valkurm Dunes.

Completing this allows you to use a support job.

sub
# Dec 13 2003 at 8:28 PM Rating: Decent
So what I'm getting is when you do the subjob (after giving the guy the 3 items) and then return to mog house, pick your sub.

Then, later on, can you go out with the sub you picked and level it up more? or do you need to have your sub job leveled before you pick it as your sub?
RE: sub
# Dec 16 2003 at 7:45 PM Rating: Default
When you complete the quest, subjob becomes available. Then you go to the mog house and set it. Your subjob level has a maximum level of 50% of your current primary job level, up to your subjob's total level.

Example: You level Warrior to 18, complete the quest and begin leveling Monk with Warrior as sub. At Monk level 4, your Warrior level will read as 2. At Monk 36, it will read as 18. At Monk 40, it will still only be 18. The sub-level determines the cap for skills carried over from the sub.

You can get the items more than once, but they do you no good since you can't do anything with them.

# Jan 09 2004 at 10:07 PM Rating: Decent
ya, so that everyone is aware the subjob items are not tradable or sellable at all. also, you can only do either the mhaura or the selbina quest, once you start one your stuck with it. my friend got all three items for selbina quest only to realize hed started them mhaura one and had to dump them and get the other three ;D
I solo'd these items
# Dec 08 2003 at 7:58 AM Rating: Decent
I did manage to solo these items as a Hume Monk. Instead of competing with the other players and Goblins in Vulkurm, I went to Gusgen for the Skull. The Ghouls there are about the toughest monster in the area and they spawn anytime day or night and they also spawn reliably in the same places. I did this at Level 24.
Easy Skulls
# Dec 04 2003 at 10:07 PM Rating: Excellent
Hi everyone, I took "Easy Skulls" suggestion and went to test out his theory and it works great.

I went to J-6 in Valkrum - Palm trees area. I suggest staying right inside the edge of the trees, near the open space(e.g. near the campfire). Just as it is getting dark, bats will spawn, start killing all bats and also (something that i noticed) take note of the position of where the bats spawned. I'm not too sure but it seems that the ghoul spawns around the same spot/area where the bats spawn. My group killed like around 6-7 spawns of bats, and we got like a total of 4 ghouls spawn on us between 2200 to 0200 game time. We got 3 skulls out of the 4 ghouls. I asked my group members as 3 of them were lvling their adv jobs and had their sub-jobs done long time ago, they said that this is the first time that they have come across so many ghoul spawns in one night and that the drop rate was so high. My group consisted of 2 THF, 1 PLD/WAR, 1 WHM/BLM. 1 SAM/WAR. It could also be because we had 2 lvl 19+ THF with Treasure Hunter to account for the high drop rate. Well that is my oberservations, so you can go test it out.

Good Luck, and thanks for the Tip ^_^ Mr anonymous

When forming a group for Ghoul hunting. Try to have a thief lvl 16+ in the group. Their treasure hunting ability greatly increases the probably of a skull dropping.

Mhaura Quest
# Dec 04 2003 at 9:35 AM Rating: Default
My friend spent days looking for the stuff for Selbina's quest (Good thing he didnt accept the quest) and he went to Mhaura and done that quest within a hour with a small party. The whole party completed it within the time it takes to get 1-2 Skulls for the Selbina one. So now all my friends have done the Mhaura one but me... I done the Selbina one since I had all the items before 18 T_T;.
Easy Skulls

***Easy Skulls***

I'm level 24/11 so when my friends needed skulls I went back to the dunes and hacked up some Ghouls, salted them and served um on a silver plate BUT no skulls. However... after spending several hours there I figured this sure fire way to obtain them:

Take your party to J-6 in the Dunes, its a little medow of palm trees near the entrance to the Dunes. At about 18:00 bats will start to show up. The Night bats are easy for lvl 18-19 but be carefull of the Star bats. Kill them as they appear, this will make more ghouls will spawn and earlier. The first spawn time is about 19:00 then again at about 22:00, not to mention the normal window of 24:00 - 4:00 so you have plenty of chances.

Here is the key to getting skulls:

Have the lowest level member of your party take the final hit defeating the ghoul.

We did this and literally got 4 skulls from 4 ghouls one after the other. I've obtained a total of 7 or 8 skulls this way and it has not failed me yet. This also works for the other items. I'm not sure how the item drop engine works but the chances increase dramatically by using this meathod.

One last thing... Dont go to the mines... My friends killed 30 Ghouls there and no skull to speak of.

Mr. Bogus you are free to have your opinions. This meathod is something I noticed over several days of Ghoul hunting. It worked VERY well for me so I shared it. After I posted this meathod I aquired another 3 skulls in the same manner. The idea here is to increase your chances of finding a skull so you dont end up pulling all your hair out. J6 has the most spawn areas that I have found yet as well as the earliest spawn time.

Things to add:

At J6 the first spawn is regulary as early as 19:00, just be sure to free up some spawn slots by killing bats.

There are about 5 spawn areas there but they rotate. 2 are on the west side, one to the north and one nearer to the goblin campfire (on very rare ocassion I also see one pop up right behind that dune to the NW of the fire) 2 more are on the east side, one to the north and another a few paces south of it at about the middle. The last is at the very edge of the southern area. This one is also rare but I'm guessing that its pretty random wich you happen to find on any given night.

I have no clue if magic will do it or not. I did have a wtm along for one of these runs and she did cure II it to death but I honestly dont remember if a skull dropped.

I'm not saying you're lying or anything but that "last hit" business sounds bogus. Getting 4 skulls in a row may have been an amazing coincidence but I don't believe that has anything to do with who got the last hit.

Also, the highest concentration of ghouls may be found in J-6 but they also spawn along the northern area of the map; I have on a few occasions seen a Ghoul spawn a little east or west of the outpost north of Selbina.
RE: Easy Skulls
# Nov 27 2003 at 6:43 PM Rating: Default
Actually they spawn in three spots. One at 20:00 at the NW corner of that area. Another at 23:00 South of that area. The last at 02:00 SE corner of that area.

When you say the final hit... does this also work for magic? Also, does it still apply if several party members are all at the same (and lowest) level?

THanks!

Any ghoul anywhere can drop the skull. Zone matters not.
Re:

I am of the opinion also that you should make your way to Selbina at level 15 and start getting into groups to work on getting your items. From my experience the worm and apron are very easy, but the skull will usually be the toughest. The ghouls are not very hard to kill, it's just that unless you are willing to enter the mines you have to be on the lookout for them when they start spawning. Our group was lucky in that we had 3 skulls drop out of 4 killed, and I had all 3 items onhand before I hit level 18.
Support and Sub
# Nov 17 2003 at 10:37 AM Rating: Decent
Someone told me that there are two types of jobs...a Sub-job and a Support-job. They said that the support job levels along with the main job..kinda shares experience while the sub-job does not. you have to switch in and out to gain experience in one or the other. Is this true? if so, is there any documentation to define it?
RE: Support and Sub
# Nov 18 2003 at 12:52 AM Rating: Default
This is just wrong.

You have a subjob, it is any job you have aquired and the highest level it can be while it is your subjob is 1/2 your main job. You gain no experience in your subjob, only your main job.

Keep in mind if you never independantly level your subjob it will not be 1/2 your main always.

So if you only play Warrior up to 18(for instance) ... and you Sub White Mage once you finish the subjob quest you would be a 18Warrior/1WhiteMage ... because you never leveled your White Mage.

<Tekno Vagabond>
So what your saying is, if I am a level 18 warrior, and I have white mage as a sub job, the only way to increase white mage would be to make it my main job and level it like anything else?

If so, then whats the difference betwen the Sub-Job and Support job? People keep saying things about it, but no one has answered clearly.

Does the sub job do anything different from the Support Job?

they are the same thing, sub job IS support job. There is no difference.
Windurst Quest Info
# Nov 17 2003 at 7:23 AM Rating: Decent
The person the Windurst people have to talk to is named Vera, and she's in square G-10 in Mhaura. She'll ask you for three things:

Wild Rarab's Tail (dropped by mighty rarabs)
cup of dhalmel saliva (bull dhalmel)
bloody robe (bogies .. they are on the beach)

She'll ask for each of these in order. You *have* to be lvl 18 before you can get the quest, however, if you then die and lose your lvl, you can still use your subjob.

We went into Valkurn Dunes at lvl 15 with a full group and came out of there lvl 19 with all but the skulls. Exp was crazzee at lvl 15-18 in Dunes. From there we headed to Gusgen Mines, was a lil tough at first but we got the hang of it. We were only missing 3 skulls and got them in about an hour or so. Lotta fun completing a whole quest as a group! =)
Re: Solo
# Nov 13 2003 at 6:11 PM Rating: Good
I'm having little difficulty soloing the quest at level 22, as a red mage. Snippers check anywhere from "easy prey" to "even match", although even that is an overcon - they're simply...easy. Damselflies go from decent challenge to tough, so you might have to hunt around a bit for soloable ones, but I'm not having much trouble with the 'even match' ones either. I have only found one ghoul thus far in the Dunes and it died fast. :)

Problem with Getting Quest?
# Nov 13 2003 at 6:44 AM Rating: Decent
I got the items before getting the quest. And now when I talk to the guy in Selbina, he says, "Oh, hello there... I'm just an eldery old man. So go and leave me be." And when I trade him items nothing happens. I tried all 3 at a time, and 1 at a time, and it doesn't make the difference. You guys mentioned something about talking to someone in Mhuara? Where is the person in this place? I need to speak with that person and see if he/she will give me quest. Thanks

Alliegence / Ghouls
# Nov 12 2003 at 7:37 PM Rating: Good
You can have alliengence to whomever you please when you take this quest, but you CANNOT have taken the quest from Mhaura already. If you've taken it from Mhaura, you're SOL. I've seen Windurstians and San d'Orians both do the quest from Selbina, just as I know Bastokians have taken it from Mhaura (I don't know offhand of any San d'Orians who have taken it in Mhaura, but there's no reason San d'Orians shouldn't be able to).

The only tough part of the Selbina quest if the Ghouls: If you're looking for Ghouls and don't mind a little risk and a lot of boredom, Gusgen mines is the best bet, since it spawns consistantly around the clock, rather than only during night hours. The mines are located on the far-east side of Konschtat Highlands. You will almost guaranteedly not have a map of this location (you can only get a map from a quest in Bastok, the name of which escapes me, as far as I know). There is a simple way to gind a reliable spawn of several Ghouls, though - simply go straight. When you enter the mines, follow the tracks until you reach the first room, which should have several Skeleton Soldiers in it. You can try luring them to the room enterence if you like, but there's no need if you've got a decent party of 6 or more level 18-20's - charge in and take the skeletons apart. Go straight across the room to a short passegway leading to another room identical to the first, also populated by skeleton soldiers. Destroy them, then continue on into the long passegway. You should see Ghouls ahead of you in just a few steps. I SERIOUSLY recommend luring these one at a time, since they will likely con between Tough and Incredibly Tough to you. Proceed with caution, trying not to link Ghouls, until the tracks end at a wooden blocker. Continue on very shortly on foot to come to a platform overlooking a large open area - the platform is home to between 2 and 3 more Ghouls. I suggest once cleansing the area you retreat to the block and use it as a staging ground. Hold position here and have everyone rest continuously while you wait on Ghoul spawns. It seems that one or two will spawn every 3 minutes or so, round the clock. Beware of pulling too many ghouls at once, it will likely be deadly. If you are pressed to the limits, it's always a good option to have your healers try a last-ditch attack with Cure II - remember, Cure spells are damaging to Undead. The added weight of their 40+ point damage Cure II spells might be enough to win the day.

(Alternate Strategy against Ghouls: Any combination of 3 RDM/WHM and 2 Warriors should have no problem winning against Ghouls. In this case the fighters are there solely to provoke, NOT to deal damage. It is the job of the Mages to spam Cure II against the Ghouls without remorse. WHM's are better for this task, though RDM's serve well also. A healer-assault group will have less trouble with Ghouls than a fighter-melee group, but may be pressed unduly if a sudden spawn occurs while the mages are still resting their MP).

No matter how you choose to destroy the Ghouls, beware their attacks. Hell Slash isn't much issue, but Dark Cloud (not sure of the name) and Blood Saber (also not sure on the name) can be devastating, particularly Blood Saber. This attack will do a mass-drain of approx 60-80 HP per party member and restore the damage to the Ghoul's health.

Without a doubt, the simplest way to take Ghouls is to be accompanied by a high-level Japanese character. You won't get much if any XP, but you'll finish the mission quicker and with almost zero risk.
