Mission Orders

Determine the state of affairs in San d'Oria and Bastok, and render assistance on behalf of Heavens Tower. Inquire at our consulate in each country for more information.
Traveling by ship from Mhaura to Selbina is recommended.

Walkthrough

This is a VERY long quest and is divided into TWO parts that will VARY depending on WHICH one city you visted first. I suggest completing either sub-job quest (The Old Lady from Vera in Mhaura or Elder Memories from Isacio in Selbina) before attempting this. Getting a Chocobo License and the maps to Palborough Mines/Ghelsba Outpost/Giddeus is advised. In addition, the maps to all the main cities are a good idea.

After talking to the Gate Guard talk to Kupipi in Heavens Tower. She will explain the mission. You might want to start the Rock Racketeer quest from Windurst before leaving town.

Bastok First

The Windurstian embassy is located at the top of Metalworks. Talk to the Ambassador Patt-Pott to receive this part of the mission.

Head to the President's office at (K-8) to talk to Pius and learn the importance of Mythril Sand to the beastmen. Lastly, meet up with Grohm in the Metalworks Craftsmen's Eatery where he will tell you the procedures and happenings in Palborough Mines and then give you 3 pickaxes. Before heading out, you might want to buy some more pickaxes from Boytz's Knickknacks at (H-7) in Bastok Mines. In additon, buy a Map of Palborough Mines from Karine in Bastok Markets or Rex in Port Bastok.

Head off to Palborough Mines via North Gustaburg at (K-3). After entering, go to (I-8) and use the elevator to get to the 3rd floor. Now head to (I-9) on the map. You'll find several spots called Mythril Seams where you can do some mining for the gravel. Trade the "pickaxe" to that spot. You may fail a few times, so keep trying until you get some Mine Gravel. This is the same spot for the Rock Racketeer quest. Note: this is very difficult if you do this solo at level 20, therefore it is recommended that you party with at least one other person.

After getting the item, go to the 2nd level. Head to the middle of the map at (I-6) by going around the right side of the map. You'll see a machine with a lid and a lever. Trade the mine gravel you got to the lid, then pull the lever.

Continue the path to the left side of the map, around and back to the area under the machine. You'll see a lever there too. Pull it and receive an item Mythril Sand. Go back to the embassy and trade that item to the Ambassador.

San d'Oria - The Dragon

In Northern San d'Oria head to the Consulate of Windurst. First of all talk to be the Ambassador. You will be told to talk to Halver in Chateau d'Oraguille. You will need a Ghelsba Outpost map. As well you might want to start The General's Secret quest from Curilla (Temple Knights' Quarters, Chateau d'Oraguille) since the water is right by the end of this mission. To prepare make sure you have a FULL party and you are ready to fight the dragon. If you have anyone over level 25 make sure they have under level 25 equipment since they will de-level for the boss.

Head to Fort Ghelsba and go all the way to the top. There are some huts, behind which is a tunnel leading into the mountains. (You can also get here from Yughott Grotto by hugging the wall to the left as soon as you enter Ghelsba). At Fort Ghelsba you need to head into one of the huts at (J-8) to get to the last area, Yughott Grotto. Once you enter the top of the mountains there are two exits -- one to the burning circle and the other to the springs, for The General's Secret quest.

Prepare yourself and enter the burning circle. There are two monsters: a floating eye called a Spotter and then the Dread Dragon. Don't bother with buffs since the dragon will remove them all in the first few seconds. Kill the floating eye first, then the dragon.

Once done you are sitting in the springs. Heal up and head back to the Consulate of Windurst and pick up your Adventurers Letter from Kasaroro.

Finally, battered but defiant, make your way back to Heavens Tower in Windurst and receive your well earned rewards.

Congratulations on RANK 3 and 3000 gil!

Update Notes

As of February 14th, 2011, there is no longer a level cap restriction on the mission battlefield.

Okay, I completed Mission 2-3 a couple of nights ago (finally, my god), and I wanted to clarify a few things to hopefully make it easier for those who want to go to San d'Oria first to fight the Dark Dragon in Bastok.

--- SAN D'ORIA FIRST ---

After initiating the mission at the guard gate anywhere in Windurst, going to Heaven's Tower and taking to Kupipi, set out on your Chocobo to San d'Oria. When you arrive to the fair city, go to North San d'Oria and go to the Windurstian Consulate there. If you talk to the little taru at the front of the desk, a cut scene will start. Then, you're free to talk to the Consul in the back room.

She will tell you that she can't issue you orders and you have to go to Chateau d'Oraguille and speak with Halver to get them. Once you enter the Chateau, talk to Halver, who is pretty much the first NPC you'll see (racist ******* that he is). He will **** and moan about the other races in the game, then tells you to go kill the Warchief Vatgit.

The Warchief Vagit is in Ghelsba, which you can reach going through West Ronfaure, in the top left of the map. The Warchief is ridiculously easy to kill -- to give you an idea, I went to kill him as my 30 WHM/15 BLM and fried him in 6 spells without even getting hit.

Let me clarify -- you CAN be in a party and still get credit for killing him, even if other people in the party are not on the mission with you.

I don't know exactly what the coordinates for him are, but I suggest buying a map if you're not familiar with the area. After you cross two suspension briges, you'll come up to an open area that has a lot of huts on stilts. Just kill all of the orcs in the area to have him spawn (and he spawns quick), murder him savagely, and you're done.

Another clarification, unlike the Bastok and San d'Oria first missions, you do NOT need a drop from the Warchief. All you have to do is slay him, and return to the Windurstian Consulate in North San d'Oria again.

After a brief cutscene, you're free to go to Bastok.

---THE DARK DRAGON---

Once you reach Bastok, go from Bastok Markets to the Metal Works (right by the MH in Bastok Markets for those not familiar with Bastok). Ride the elevator to the top and go to the Windurstian Council, where two rather homesick if inept Taru tell you that they can't issue you any orders. Now you must go to the President's Office and speak with Pius(? I've forgotten now, sorry). Anyway, go to the President's office, go in the right door, and there'll be a rather hefty hume. After talking to him, he'll send you to go find a Galka in the mess hall of the Metalworks. His name is Ghrom or something similar (again, I've fogotten), and he's on the right side of the room, chowing down on a meal.

Once you talk to him, he'll tell you about the weird happenings in Palborough Mines. From there, go to Port Bastok to enter into North Gustaburg and make your way to Palborough (top right corner of the map).

Okay, one gripe about the game. The Palborough Mines map is absolutely worthless. It doesn't tell you which paths are blocked, so you'll be doing a lot of running around.

From the North Gustaberg zone into Palborough, you'll need to take the elevator up one floor. There, you will find the Burning Circle on the bottom right of the screen. You'll have to take the left half of the map (the long way) to get there, and when you do, you'll zone into a room with the Burning Circle. Once you activate it, you'll be treated to a cut scene, then... it is time for battle!

---BATTLE NOTES---

This dragon is a piece of cake if you do it right. I went in with a 32 BLM, 30 MNK, 30 RDM, 31 RDM, and myself, 30 WHM. We were all deleveled to 25, of course. Our BLM sleeped the dragon, I cast Silence on the Seeker, and the RDM and BLM began nuking it like crazy. I threw in a few nukes and very quickly it was over for him. Then, our MNK whipped out his 2 hour and beat the living daylights out of the Dragon, with our backup nuking assist.

There was never even a time that anyone's HP went into the yellow, nevermind the red. We finished the fight in 3 minutes.

After you're done with the fight, go back to the Metal Works to get your letter from the Taru, then it's off to the fair Windurst once more.

--- ENDING THE MISSION ---

Return to Windurst Walls and the Heaven's Tower to talk to Kupipi again. She seems rather curt and distracted, but gives you your Adventurer's Certificate, Rank 3, and 3000 gil. YAY! Congrats!

If you talk to the little taru on the left of Kupipi, she'll tell you how Kupipi likes Rolanberrys and makes adventurers bring them to her whenever they go to Jeuno. If you give Kupipi a Rolanberry, she'll be ever so greatful and will promise that someday, she just might have a present for you!

Hope this helps out anyone who needed more info on the quest.

To clarify this even more, the Warchief spawns in the area right before you enter Fort Ghelsba, in Ghelsba Outpost. It is located at position (H-7).

Hope this helps everyone who is going to San d'Oria first.

I think I want to clarify something, nad someone please tell me if I'm wrong.

After you kill the Warchief, if you mess up and talk to Halver agian, before the Taru consul, you'll erase the fact that you killed the war chief and have to go kill him agian. Make sure to only talk to Halver ONCE.

I'm doing M6 (from Windurst) right now.. What about the Warchief. I did what u write. I went to the consul got orders to see guy Halver in the castle who told me to go kill a warchief in Ft Ghelsba. Then I'm supposed to report back to the consul.. who according to my LS tells me I need to go to Bastok, where I will receive orders to go to the mines. It's not till I get tothose mines that I fight a dragon. Ur not telling anyone that IF u start in Bastok.. the dragon will be fought in San d'Oria, or that IF u start in San d'Oria, the dragon will be in Bastok? But at no, time have u mentioned the Warchief? As for Curilla, well I spoke to him, but he gave me no Quest at all!!?? I'm a RDM28, rank 2.. what's the deal??

edited: Answered my own question. The map is great for Palborough. Thanks for that.

The Bastok - Palborough - Mythril Sand part instructions could stand a bit of expansion however. Go to the Ambassador (cutscene). Go to Pius (Dept. of Industry). Go to Grohm in the Eatery (2nd cutscene). Go to Palborough. Follow map and instructions to get Mythril Sand. Back to Ambassador. If however, you neglect to do Pius and Grohm before you get the sand, you cannot hand it in - and must go talk to them, and see the 2nd cutscene - then back to Ambassador once again to do hand it. Done. :)

Just finished this Mission and it only took 2 of us to do it. I was a level 25 BLM and my partner was a level 24 Warrior. I put dragon to sleep, and we both attacked Spotter. After that, he initiated his Mighty Strikes and I healed him from across the arena while he attacked the dragon. I used 2 Ether Potions to keep my magic up, and he used one Hi-Potion.

I think what you have to do first (its been so long since i started this mission, hehe) is you have to talk to the people at the desk in heavens tower, the ones that you get a world pass from, then they tell you to go upstairs and talk to kupipi... at least, thats what i recall having to do :)

This quest is driving me crazy!!! I can't get the dang thing started!!! I have run all over every inch of Heaven's Tower and I can't find the mob named Kupipi. Is she upstairs? The guards won't give me access to upstairs, and I have maximum rank points in Rank 2. I've run all over the middle floor and downstairs and I can't find Kupipi anywhere. All the guides say to talk to Kupipi, but none tell where he or she is?
Doing Sandy first

There are two ways to do this quest as some have mentioned. You can start in either Sandy or Bastok once you get the quest in Windy.

Doing this quest with Sandoria first. The Warchief is quite easy to kill. Looking at the big hut on the upper platform, he spawns off to the right between two poles. Then head up into Yughott Grotto and get your Ghelsba Key(s) before heading back to Sandy and then on to the Bastok Dragon. Warchief was insanely easy for us (lvl 16 NM), and we were able to handle all the Orcs we fought in the Grotto, sometimes two at a time as they like to link and aggro.

We were just a 25 whm/9 blm and a 25 rdm/12 blm. We were even doing skillchains!! Seraph Strike -> Burning Blade. Will post on the Bastok Dragon when we finish that part.

This mission is meant to be done along with getting your Kazham keys if you want to make it easy on yourself.

A bit of advice I discovered (if you go to Bastok first) the hardway: watch where you run after you've placed the mine gravel in the machine at the top. Both my Mithra friend and I had been led all the way to the mines by a higher-level friend, and both she and I ended up accidentally zoning into the Shrine while searching for bigger Quadavs to kill. When we came to the first level to get our mythril sand, surprisesurprise! Nothing happened, even though we'd both put the gravel in at the top and she had even done this quest once before on another character. We both felt like supreme retards.

So make sure you don't accidentally zone and end up without another pickaxe at least to get more mine gravel -- and yes, you can continue to hack at the mythril seam to get more than one "mine gravel" in case you're worried about ******** up.

yeah, the dragon was insanely simple...I had a team do it without a whm...put dragon to sleep then nuked the eye, then went for the dragon. Probably could have rested first to get back MP...I was the only one who used a 2-hour (I'm a monk, it just made the battle go faster) But, yeah, Bastok dragon = insanely easy

Just did this mission the other night....party consisted of

1 lvl 23 war/mnk
2 lvl 15 war
1 lvl 18 whm
1 lvl 22 drg/thf
1 lvl 25 mnk/thf

took us 5 minutes which is slow....but we beat the dragon without any problems...no one came anywhere near being in jeopardy of dying or even concerned with dying for a single second

this mission is highly doable at lower levels than previously thought

Did this Mission last night This was damn easy and Very exciting my party consisted of

2 BLM's both Lvl 25
1 WHM lvl 25

Our tactic we were going to play bouncy ball with it :) first things first When the battle starts we put the dragon to sleep and went to work on the eye about 30 seconds of chain casting and the eye want boom.

Then the dragon was still sleeping so we went cast crazy me and the other BLM chain casting like crazy and we had our WHM throwing Cure III's whenver he could. Once the dragon was awake me and the other BLM just played a hate battle basically we would both cast like crazy and when the dragon came towards you then you run and stop casting while the other kept casting to pull more hate. He went down like a town of bricks i was the only one that had to use my 2hr.

The only thing we used to help us in the battle were a few apple pies.

1 for each of us gave us a nice INT boost and we kicked some dragon butt!

BTW this was Bastok Dragon we took.

Title Granted: Black Dragon Slayer

There is a title granted besides the Advanturer title from this mission.

Currently I'm lvl 27 Mithra thf/war, in Ragnarok Server. I killed the dragon about 4 times now, helping my friend, and some stranger. and right now, i have the title of Black Dragon Slayer. LOL which sounds alot cooler than most other title.

ways to kill this boss.
party of 4 lvl 25 char or 6 lvl 21+
1. 2 tanks - PLD or war will do a fine job, make sure that the tank try to keep the hate away from other member. why 2 tanks? because the dragon has an ability of cursing the character so that the character only has 1/5 oh their HP during battle. so make sure that both tanks are in different position.
2. 1 dmg dealer - THF, DRK, or RNG. Yes THF i sneak attack + stabed this boss 4 times. each about 120 dmg.
3. 1 Healer - mainly healing the tank, and remove status, therefore RDM or WHM will do a fine job.

that's about my party. a party of 4, and we did awsome job. completely the battle in first place with a NEW rec of 4 mins and 10 seconds. maybe that's how i got the title of Black Dragon Slayer.. or maybe just kill it too many times...

heres a question....my friend and i are both on this quest. i went to sandoria first, fought the warchief, and now have to kill the dragon in bastok. my friend however went to bastok first and has to kill the dragon in sandoria. is it possible for us to help each other on these or do we have to be on the mission to kill the dragon in the same place?

Ok, after you refine the gravel and get the mythril sand all you need to do is go to Windurst or Sand'Oria consul in Bastok (depending on nation) and talk to the guy who "introduced" you to Bastok. (The one that told you to go to Prez Office)

probably cause u're not from windrust or bastok, if ur citizen is at san o'dria, then u're not able to enter the fight....unless u've done the mission/rank3 or above.
i had 4 other friends to help me kill the dragon at san o'dria, however, we weren't able to beat it cause the stupid curse effects on all my friends...lv22blm, and others r lv25 brd, pld, smn and a whm. i would say bring enough melee with you and also equipments. full party might be necessary....we're so close from killing it then it killed us all with final blow T-T
in conclusion, DON'T FIGHT THE SAN O'DRIA DRAGON cause it's harder then windrust and bastok one.
(btw, the npc from san o'dria in the cut scene r so cheap rofl....warp out and leave us to do the thirty works)
Directions to San D'Oria BC confusing
# Feb 15 2004 at 10:41 AM Rating: Excellent
Quote:
Head to Fort Ghelsba and go all the way to the top. There are some huts, behind which is a tunnel leading into the mountains. (You can also get here from Yughott Grotto by hugging the wall to the left as soon as you enter Ghelsba). At Fort Ghelsba you need to head into one of the huts at J-8 to get to the last area - another "Grotto". Once you enter the top of the mountains there are two exits -- one to the burning circle and the other to the springs - "The General's Secret" quest.

We found this directions confusing and inaccurate. It should read:

"Head to Ghelsba Outpost and go all the way to the top. There are some huts, at the back of one is a tunnel leading into the mountains. Follow this tunnel to the Fort Ghelsba zone (You can also get here from lower portion of Yughott Grotto by hugging the wall to the left as soon as you enter Ghelsba Outpost). In Fort Ghelsba, head to the top and look more huts at J-8. At the back of one of the huts in the entrance to upper portion of Yughott Grotto (the two parts of Yughott Grotto are not connected). Cross the grotto to the northeast exit - this will take you to Horlais Peak and the Burning Circle entrance for the Dread Dragon fight."

As for the fight, we won this with 21 WAR/MNK, 25 MNK/WHM, 21 THF/MNK, 21 RDM/BLM and 21 WHM/BLM. The monk's 2 hr was the key to the win. We had one death - the warrior - who was cursed down to 70 hps and impossible to keep alive. She was did get the key item at the end and no xp loss.

Question about lvl cap
# Feb 08 2004 at 12:23 PM Rating: Default
So will you automatically be reduced to lvl 25 when you go to fight it? That's what im hearing.
done it with 4
# Feb 05 2004 at 4:40 AM Rating: Default
I've killed the dragon about 4 times already, and 3 of those times we killed the dragon with 4 peeps. My party usually consisted of a WHM, RDM and 2-3 melees, one of which is a monk. Have everyone attack the eye, kill it, then have monk unleash 2hr on dragon. Goes down without too much trouble.

I was a 25 WHM and buffed with protect and shell before battle. As far as I can tell, the dragon will not dispell your buff if you don't try to debuff the dragon (not 100 percent sure on this) but my party still had their buffs on after every dragon fight.

You will most likely be cursed during the fight, so it's helpful if your WHM is at least 29 with cursna, or at least be extra careful on the trek home if you're low level.

On an extra note, its best to have peeps with the same quest, i.e. kill the same dragon, or have done it before, to party with you...no sense getting a bunch of peeps together only to find out half of them can't go through the burning circle...

Ok, I had never been to palbourough before, and I tried going through a map with these instructions, but that was useless, so I logged in and started running all over palbourough, I think I went everywhere EXCEPT where the machine was before I found it. Once I did I couldn't believe how easy it was to get to, so I decided to make this little map (Original stolen from Lonely Vana'diel who stole it from SE). Please note I didn't bother going and getting the ore or whatever, I just bought it at the AH for 300, thats about the same price as a pickaxe and less trouble.

(Link/Guide Removed by Original Author - See Above)

Additionally, if the admins want to add this to the above guide, and grab the image I made to save locally, please do. I have a clearer gif that is 51K, but i didn't want to spam my provider with 3x the d/l data. I hate jpg too.

Burning Circles cannot be entered by more than one party at a time. Thus the max number of players fighting the dragon is set at 6.

For any other part of the quest, you are welcome to form alliances.
