Mission Orders

Assist the Aurastery's School of Magic in the selection of the venue for their next skills test. They want to record the number of monsters you can hunt at a specific area, in a set number of days, to fairly standardize their skills test.

Walkthrough

If you donate 4 stacks of crystals to a gate guard you can skip this mission.

After talking to the gate guard head to the Aurastery and talk to Moreno-Toeno. The Minster wants to test his students in Tahrongi Canyon, but he needs a benchmark by which to compare his students to adventurers such as yourself. You are to directed to Tahrongi Canyon to exterminate as many monsters as you can in 1 hour. This is a TIMED mission and you have to be quick getting there. Warp or a Scroll: Instant Warp is a good idea to have.

Try to exterminate 30+ monsters in less then a hour AND make your way back to the Aurastery. This is a cumulative mission - so more the merrier! In other words, having more people CANNOT hurt your chances in finishing this quest on time. When you are finished, go back to Moreno-Toeno to complete the mission.

The following are transcripts and videos from the mission A Testing Time.

I did this mission this morning.

Used BLM24/WHM12. I set my HP at Waters MH, started the mission at 19:00 then warped to HP, where i entered my MH and exited in Woods. From there i ran to get a choc and rode it to Tahrongi Canyon. When i got to Tahrongi it was like 23:00, so i killed various low lvl mobs until about 16:00, then i warped back.

He would NOT take the doll from me until 18:00. 27 total, mission complete.

I misread something when I did this, and thought that a variety of different mobs was needed, so I killed everything from Rarabs to Air Elementals. Turns out, all you need is quantity: of anything.

I killed 21 on this one, and 40 in Buburima (both solo). The response for each was that I killed more than expected.

This one still showed up when they offered me the 2-3 mission, too. When I'm done with this one, and am Rank 3, I may go back and see where it sends you for the third outting.
did it just for the hell of it

Like several others have already said, i accidently accepted this mission as i am currently rank 3. i haven't read any responses as to being able to skip this mission although i've already accepted it. would giving some more crystals do anything or is there an alternate way?

Hi Mojojojo,
A very easy way to skip this one after having already accepted it is to go ahead and take the magic doll from Moreno-Teono then simply don't do it. After an hour you can report back to Moreno-Teono, he responds that you've failed and now you are free to move on to something else.
Good Luck.

This is the most annoying mission ever! I did this mission and killed 50+ monsters with my whm friend (we were both lv 18) and we still had 8 hours to spare. When we got back he said that it was too early. i might be a little off not to get what the NPC meant but it would have been better if it said it in this somewhere that you have to give him the doll when its the last hour...

Just finished this mission soloing with 15-WHM, after thinking I was going to fail it. While counting manually, I wound up losing track of kills, but thought it was only about 12-15. After coming back, Moreno-Toeno said it was 21.

"That's high higher than I had hoped. Well, it wasn't worth worrying with the talk that the monsters have grown potently more powerful lately.

The next treacherous terrain to try will be the Buburimu Peninsula, I proceed to presume. But still, that will wait till we've time to kill. Then that's all forthwith, thank thee."

I'm going to guess that the numer you need in order to pass corresponds directly with level and possibly class.
Easy, but Lame

Just did this mission as a War12/Thf6, killed 26 mobs, and passed. Ran there and back by foot. Easy, but possibly the stupidest mission ever.

Okay I just went and did this mission solo for kicks. I am Rank 4 and decided to see how many I could kill in the allotted time. I took the warp to the Buburimu Peninsula outpost and used a scroll of instant warp to get back. I killed 115 mobs solo as a MNK34/THF17. Everything in Tahrongi Canyon is Too Weak to be Worthwhile to me and I kill most things in three or four hits. I got the same message about the beastmen not being a threat and that the next test would be in Buburimu Peninsula.

It was a hoot running around just killing everything in sight. A good way to relieve the stress of unlocking PLD.

I got this Misson at level 15. I went up to the Canyons soloed 10 mobs, eight of which were different mobs and then headed back with about an hour to spare. I was told that I had passsed the test with 85 points, and to come back when I have time to do the next time test.

You're either lying thru your teeth or really confused.

If you don't talk to him within the LAST hour of the time restraint, he'll either tell you you're too early or too late. When I tried this mission I came back with 4 game hours to spare, but I wasted too much time fishing outside and I blew it. The doll exploded because I came back too late after that.

Kill as many monsters as you want for this mission, folks, the more the better. Just make sure your count is at least 30. Kill a few more just for good measure.

You have no idea wtf you are talking about. I dont know what might have happened to make you think this is true, but when me and a few buddies did the quest, we had 103 kills, the guy said good job, he gave us the next mission, and that was that. Perhaps you turned the doll in too late, and that caused it to explode? It seems to me that the *only* time you can turn the doll in is during the last hour of the vana-diel day. Too early and he says come back in a bit, too late, and apparently your doll explodes.

I took this mission with a friend, got halfway through it, and my cable went out for the rest of the night. Needless to say, I failed. Does failing have any negative impact on anything?

Set my HP near starting NPC. Took choco to canyon, killed 46 monsters, used scroll of instant warp and had to wait 20 min earth time before he would accept. He will only accept it in the last hour left.

Note to everyone doing this mission:This mission is a waste of time, it doesnt really reward you with rank 3, all you get is fame... well i guess not a complete waste of time, though, you can get fame in better, more entertaining ways

Me and a friend did it as a lvl 20 white mage and a lvl 19 thief, got 100 kills, got back with an hour to spare,(Takes about 6 game hours to leg it back in time) guy says we 'high higher than he expected and it was clear the beastmen were not a threat in Tahrongi' before mentioning that the next test would be in Buburimu.
WTF?

all i have to say is this mission is mega-schlame, there is no way to do it right, i killed about 36 or so enemies, went back to windy, and they guy said "its only 12, you still have 3 hours, get back out there.." or something along those lines, so, i wait for 3 in game hours and talk to him again then he says "you overtly overdid it" ive got that 3 times from him, what am i doing wrong?

Is there something about this mission that I'm missing?

I went out and did the Canyon version. Killed about 57 or so. Then I got the Buburimu version. Killed 60. Came back to check missions and got the Canyon version again. I had read that there was a 3rd leg, so this wasn't unexpected.

I went back to the Canyon and killed 53, and came back. He accepted the doll...didn't say I failed, but did say "Well, that's more than we had hoped for..." (or somesuch) (which he said the other two times as well)

Then he said, "The next leg will be Buburimu."

WHAT!?!?

How many times do I have to do this? Or is there a *SET* number we should kill then quit?
oh

I got this mission at lvl 8 (BLM) - I was just quite lucky to complete the previous ones by that time. I tried to go on this one after I reached lvl 10 - enough to solo rarabs and vegetables in the Canyon pass. Killed 8 creatures and got back 5 hours early - failed at the end; just received 55 rank points. I don't think at this lvl I am strong enough to meet the quota (30+), unless I am in a good group.

Minimal Level Wrong
# Jan 22 2004 at 7:51 PM Rating: Default
I started this mission to Tahrongi with level 19 Warrior and I was a level 22 White Mage. Although we made a party, we went your separate ways to the Canyon. The WAR went by foot and went by Chocobo. The WAR got there in five to six game hours and I got there in three game hours. Just killing creature that produced little or none experience, the WAR19 killed 53 creatures in about 30 minutes and I killed 55 in about 45 minutes. The point? There is no minimal level minus the ability to complete the previous mission. If you had a party to the maze, get the Lapis Coral, and walk through the East Tower in East Sarutabaruta without too much problems, you will be able to the Canyon solo below the stated "Minimal Level".
