Mission Orders

On the command of Zubaba, the head lady-in-waiting, you are to journey beneath the central magic tower of the Horutoto Ruins. There, you are to report to the facility managed by Heavens Tower, which protects the talisman that seals Castle Zvahl. Render whatever assistance is necessary.

Walkthrough

After talking to the gate guard head to the Heaven's Tower again to meet the Star Sybil's handmaiden Zubaba. She explains that she wants you to travel to the tower in East Sarubaruta and open a the 3 Mage Gate. You can do the "Making the Grade" quest from Fuepepe (Aurastery, Windurst Waters) for the ASPIR scroll at the same time (well WORTH it). Your party MUST consist of at least one of EACH of the following: Black Mage, White Mage and Red Mage.

Go to the north-eastern Horutoto tower and hug the wall to your right to find the Cracked Wall (G-8). Go inside and go through the east door in D-10. Head down to the strange looking gate at H-9. There are 3 colours on the floor: White, Red and Black. Each mage must stand in the middle of each circle and the door will open. Once the door is opened, keep going past through the fake walls at H-8.

Wendigos there drop the test answers for "Making the Grade" quest. Go into the "Gate of Light" for a cutscene with the highest ranked cardians.

You might also have to bring three Rusty Daggers dropped from Wendigos.

Head back to Heaven's Tower to finish the mission.

I just completed this mission and the Portal Pass is defiantely not one of the rewards. However once you complete this mission (having been through the Portal) you can now trade a Rolanberry to Kupipi and get a cutscene and receive the Portal Pass.

I skipped this mission long long ago (currently rank 9) and accepted this one so I could finally get the portal charm. Once I talked to Zubaba, he asked that I get three rusty daggers. I bought them from the AH, turned em in, mission over. It seems that if you've previously skipped this mission, this is all that is needed to complete it once you come back to it.

Confirmed, same here. I'm also rank 9 and went back to get the Portal Charm. Zubaba just asked for 3 Rusty Daggers, I got them from the AH, and that was the mission complete.

Not sure if there's a certain point where if you go back after skipping this, you only need the rusty daggers. I know you see the Ace Cardians in 8-2, and it says you see them in this, so maybe it's just if you go back to it after that. Or maybe it's just if you go back to do it after completing any other mission

But to get the Portal Charm, you then have to go and talk to Kupipi. If you've given her a Rolanberry already, or give her one now, you'll get a cutscene and she'll give you the Portal Charm.

Is this really mission 3-2?
# Jun 25 2005 at 9:25 PM Rating: Decent
I just completed the mission: "To Each His Own Right." The instructions for that mission noted that it was in fact the Rank 3-2 Mission. So...now I'm doing this mission and for me it is 3-3. Am I incorrect? Does it change any of the instructions for the mission if I do it in a different order than some others? This is the 1st time I've accepted the mission, so I know it isn't the repeatable version. Help!

I have the "Portal Charm" for getting passed the three mage gate, I remember getting it from Kupipi (spelling) and I still have this mission available to complete. Actually I'm doing it now, as I was just looking for something to do to fill up Rank points.

I'm confused because I thought I completed this, and this site says you get the "Portal Charm" after completing it.

Edit : I didn't realized some missions were repeatable like a few posts have mentioned.

Oh and another trick to getting past the gate if you have no other options, first off, be high enough level not to aggro the mobs on the other side (I'm not sure what that would be, a little online research would tell you) then set your Options never to log out, and auto-run into the door. Yes its a rather poor method, but someone will open the door eventually. (I didn't do this btw)

Does the Portal Charm brake after you use it on the Mage Door? I've never used it yet.. maybe that's why it's repeatable?
RE: A funny thing..

No it's permanent, and you don't actually get it for completing the mission. You must do a seperate mini-quest that you can do once you've completed this mission.

I did this after skipping the mission, and all the directions I found were really confusing.
So, for those who SKIPPED the mission and would to do it for the Portal Charm, here goes.

You need:
1 Rolenberry
3 Rusty Daggers

Talk to the Gate Guard as usual then head to the Heaven's Tower. In there, speak to
Kupipi, and trade her a Rolenberry (ingredients in AH).
She is very happy and asks you to go speak with Zubaba.

Zubaba is a taru on the 2nd floor in the Heaven's Twoer (with that funny
abstract looking thing in the middle.) He is inside the little 'building'
at a table. He will ask you to trade him 3 Rusty Daggers.

Once you do that, go back to speak with Kupipi and you will receieve a Portal Charm.

OK, this POST is for all who didn't SKIP the mission and to truly help
you get thru this mission.

There is a lot of misleading information around about this mission,
but THIS IS THE TRUE WAY TO MAKE THE QUEST WORK - Follow this and u
WILL succeed.

Accept mission at guards. Then go to 3rd floor heavens tower. Talk to
Star Sybil. Afterward, come down the stairs but DON"T take
warp to first floor. On 2nd floor there is a TARU named Zubaba - he is
in the stone circle thing on 2nd floor at table. Talk to him. He will
give u a Crest of light. If you do not have this key item, then you
will not be able to see the cut scene at the Gate of Light in the
ruins!!! Now, at this time, on my way out, I traded a Rolenberry to
Kupipi, the taru at reception desk on first floor of heavens tower.
She said she would give me a present later - I'll see about that
later.

>> Note that the Rusty Daggers are NOT needed, so save your cash.

Ok, hop on a bird and head to the east most tower in West Saru
(South West corner of J-7 near where Spiny Spipi spawns). At lvl 36
THF I didn't get aggro until past the 3 mage door.

I did a /sit and waited until someone came by - waited for like 5
mins. Some lvl 75 group came by and had portal charm. If you don't
want to wait, make sure you get a RDM, WHM, and a BLM to open the door
for you, or someone else you may know that has the Portal Charm
already.

Anyways, I believe the Gate of Light is Top left side. If you are
36ish take silent potions or get a WHM with sneak. As a THF, I was
lucky to sneak by on way to Gate of Light. Then proceed to watch cut
scene, after cut scene from your current position.

At this point, you are done. You can use a warp scroll out, or if you
did have a higher lvl BLM, perhaps Escape.

If you have to walk, there should be two passages on the left or
north side of map, I believe. I used Flee to run by the skeletons.
There is a warp pedestal to take you back to the outside of the 3 mage
door.

Once out, head back to heavens' tower talk to Zubaba again. Then go to
first floor talk to Kupipi again - she gives portal charm.

Again this only works if your doing mission 3-2 first time. I have no
experience doing quest as a repeat or going back due to skipping it.

If anyone on Bahamut server and needs help with this I have have
portal charm, so look me up.

Flotsam.

Seems like ppl still haveing trouble with this not sure why this hasn't been Stickyed.

I managed to accept the mission by a mistake, (rank4 so i didnt need it)

I didnt have any help to get in at that moment, so i just stood outside the door walking towards it and left my char like that while i went xmas shopping.

when i came back, i had entered the room, since someone had opened it, and i could do the mission.

no problem with aggro, since im lvl 44.

I finished this mission, went to Kupipi for the Portal Charm, and she said :

Kupipi : You are the adventurer that brought me the Rolanberry! (I gave her the Rolandberry months ago lol)
Kupipi : W-Wait right here. I have a little something for you.
Kupipi : With this, you can open the Sealed Portal in the Horutoto Ruins by yourself.
Kupipi : Don't worry, I even got that o~ld battle axe Zubaba's permission. I told her that with this, our brave adventurer could clean the central tower at any time!
Kupipi : Keep up the good work for Windurst! And if you're ever in Jeuno...
Obtained key item: Portal Charm

Quote:

WHAT!? What does she mean by that?? I know my next mission starts in Jeuno..but what did she mean by that?

I think it's along the lines of "If you're ever in Jeuno again, could you pick up some more rolanberries for me?" Kupipi is ALWAYS asking adventurers to bring back rolanberry souvenirs; she just loves the stuff.

Dunno if she'll give you anything else in exchange for Rolanberries, though.

Give her a rollanberry and she will later give you the portal charm that lets you open the 3-mage gate by yourself.

She will only give you the charm after you have completed the mission. I just finished rank 5 so I'll be going back and doing this mission for the charm, which you need to go to Toraimorai Canal (and the back area of Horo. with the skeles that drop test answers, bone chips, etc) if you can't get in via the House of the Hero entrance.

I have a question, I have never done this mission before Rank 6. After Rank 6, I decided that I need to do this mission cuz mission 6-2, & blm AF3 all invoid passing "Three Mages Door". so I found there is a way without haveing 3 different mages to open the door is to get the Key item: Portal Charm. So, I went to the Gate guard to get this mission that I skipped before.
the Guard asked me to goto Heaven tower, so I went there and talked to Kupipi. Kupipi told me to go up the stair to talk to Zubab. then Zubab told me to clear the area after the 3 mages door area. To prove it, I have to bring back 3 rusty dagger drop from the Wendigos.

Did I did something wrong here?
cuz I didn't get anything like what's up there said.

so, would I beable to get the Key item: Portal Charm from Kupipi after I trade the Rolanberry?

You're doing it right. When you skip this mission, doing it is the same as doing it as a repeat. It will count as completing the mission and allow you to get the Portal Charm.

I know this because I did exactly that not more than an hour ago. :) Got my AF hat, yay!

I just learned a secret not published anywhere. U get this mission from Zubab, go back to the reception desk, and see Kupipi, but first, make sure u've purchase ONE Rolanberry for an AH or vendor.. Because giving Kupipi the Rolanberry will get u a reward of a key item "Portal Charm." With this charm u can open the door by urself.. no mages needed. :)

Myself (rdm) and two friends (whm and blm) are trying to get the portal key. We all skipped this mission by handing in enough crystals to continue to the next mission. We are all now rank 5 and want to get the portal charm.
The only problem is, she will not give us the charm. We all have handed in the rolenberry, went through the sealed portal, checked the gate of light (which was sealed firmly shut) and nothing. She just tells us to see the star sybil by going up the stairs, etc.
So, what are we missing? Is there anything else that needs to be done?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you guys havne't completed the mission itself. I'm having the same problem, however when I got the mission instead of giving me a gate of light item, she told me to bring back 3 rusty daggers. I'm pretty sure this is key to finishing the mission, and in turn getting the portal charm *which i need for AF3 damn it!*. No Rusty daggers in the AH atm so I can't really test it out, but yeah, thats what I think is going on.

I figure I'd go ahead and post my full experience with this Mission. I'm trying to find webspace for cheap/free with which to start something akin to a journal of my exploits in Vana'diel. If anyone can help me find a place to host it I'd very much appreciate it. Anyways, on to the Mission.

"Written in the Stars

Missions are interesting. From the MMORPGs I've played (EQ, Horizons beta) I've never seen anything so story-driving as the Quests and Missions that FF11 has to offer. During my 30 levels of Red Magedom I'd managed to reach Mission 3-2 for Windurst: Written in the Stars.

This one thing posed a problem: A little something in the Inner Horutoto Ruins below East Sarutabaruta sometimes referred to as the Three Mage Gate. This irritating magical doorway can only be opened by one of two things--and unfortunately I'd have to get ahold of one of them in order to gain access to the area of the ruins I'd need to get to. I was given a Light Crest in the Heaven's Tower by a snotty TaruTaru NPC and was sent on my way to figure out how make one of the following happen:

1) A White Mage, Red Mage, and Black Mage together can trigger the device.
2) Someone with the Key Item: Portal Charm can open the door alone.

What followed was a quick run-around Windurst /shouting for help--that I was looking for anyone with the Portal Charm or the help of a BLM and WHM. No matter how much money I'd offer no one else replied to my calls. Slightly irritated I wandered over to the AH.

I had read online that you can give one of the NPCs in Heaven's Tower a Rolanberry and in-return get the Portal Charm with which to open the gate. I looked up Rolanberries in the AH and saw that only a single lot of 12 of them were for sale. They were something like 2k--which was fine by me if it would help me finish a Mission. I bought them up and ran back to Heaven's Tower to do the hand-in.

The redheaded Taru lady was very much pleased to be given the Rolanberry. She told me to come back later for a reward (score!). I zoned a few times, logged out and back in, let a gameday pass. Nothing did the trick. After looking up this sub-quest I found out that you had to open up the Three Mage Door the first time some other way before you'd be given the Portal Charm. Turns out that the Wendigos for the Aspir scroll quest are also down in the same area that I needed to get to. So I figured I'd find someone else who already had a Portal Charm.

I did a /search to see if anyone else was in the Heaven's Tower. One other person: A lvl 50 or so TaruTaru Black Mage named Superdx. Surely a high-level Taru BLM had a Portal Charm! I hate to just send /tells to people asking for favors but I had no other leads and asked the shorty if he had a Portal Charm. He told me that he wasn't from Windurst and that he did not have the Portal Charm. Despite this he decided to join me after I explained myself to him. Very, very much happy that we now had two out of the three needed mages I handed him a Rolanberry to see if he could turn it in for a Portal Charm. The NPC refused to take it from him and my new ally returned my Rolanberry to me.

There was some discussion. I thanked Superdx for his trying to help me and went to disband the party when he interruped with "Wait." and then informed me that he had found a WHM named (I believe) Ackley. And soon the three of us were grouped up and ready to begin Written in the Stars.

Getting there was a bit of a mess. I didn't see much of Ackley at all. But if I recall right he/she was Elvaan. Ackley apparently wasn't very talkative and didn't really know his/her way around Windurst. Superdx guided Ackley to the Chocobo Stables in Windurst Woods and we mounted up and began to ride out into East Sarutabaruta together.

---Ackley almost immediately got separated from the group. We took a moment to regather, everyone else set me on /follow and I led my group to the most northeastern ruin--right around the area in which Spiny Spippi or however you spell it's name spawns. There was a bit of confusion when Ackley had issues figuring out he/she had to dismount from his/her Chocobo in order to enter the dungeon...which made me start to question how experienced this WHM really was.

After that bit of trouble the three of us entered the Inner Horutoto Ruins.

Myrrial: Mithra, 30RDM / 11THF
Superdx: Tarutaru, 50+BLM/20+RDM
Ackley: Elvaan(?), 28WHM/??BLM(?)

It quickly became apparent that the directions I had gathered weren't quite right. And there was a bit of an issue finding exactly where we were supposed to go. I ended up getting disconnected twice for some odd reason--and by the time the group had reformed Superdx had managed to get REAL directions for us to follow. We went through a hidden cracked wall, and then down a long series of tunnels, and then into a room full of goblins. Heres where things began to go sour.

See, as soon as we entered the dungeon Superdx and Ackley put up Invis and Sneak. I thought this was silly at the time seeing as how nothing here was remotely high enough level to aggro any of us. Putting this aside I had led the group into this room--and I immediately wished I had given myself Invis and Sneak like the rest of my group as soon as I walked in.

There were a lot of goblins in this dungeon. But none of them had bothered to aggro so far. Not paying enough attention I wandered into this new goblin-filled room and failed to notice that the Leechers and Gamblers here would be more than happy to attack a level 30 Red Mage. Two or three of them began casting spells at me. I suffered a volley of DD spells and went to cast back at them to show 'em who was boss....but apparently I was Silenced or something because my spells refused to work. The goblins, however, were unaware of my invisible party-members and Superdx quickly uninvised himself and brought a rain of horrible nukey doom down upon the mess of goblins that had attacked me. My attackers drew sword and ran straight for my Tarutaru ally and I quickly drew my Centurion's Sword to come to his defense......an act that was completely futile. I got maybe one or two hits in before advanced Black Magic pwned all of our attackers.

Relived that we had managed to not link the entire room we reapplied Sneak and Invisible and continued onward. Or, at least I thought we did. Ackley ran ahead without bothering to invis himself and aggroed a total of 3 more goblins before finally obeying the cries from the rest of the party. Again combat ensued; this time to cover the **** of the clumsy WHM. After the mild clash we had to put ourselves on stealth mode yet again. Ackley couldn’t seem to figure out that if he/she had invis up it would immediately drop upon casting another spell. After this was cleared up we finally managed to reach the Three Mage Gate---and the horde of goblins guarding it.

The Gate looked quite different from how I imagined it. It’s a big door with 3 colored circles on the floor infront of it. The left one was white, the center was red, and the right was black as you face the door. Superdx immediately took his place in his circle and It began to glow with a black aura to show that it had been activated. I had to duck down a corner and reapply my Sneak and Invisible before I stepped on mine. Now it was all up to Ackley—who was standing on the black circle for some odd reason. It took a couple of minutes for the point to get across that the White Mage had to stand on the WHITE CIRCLE and then even longer to get the point across that he/she had to stand in the exact center of it to trigger it. At that point I had to accept that our WHM was a moron.

As soon as the Gate came open I rushed through the doorway. Superdx came in right behind me and Ackley managed to squeeze in just before it shut…kind of a shame really. Now we were even further in and there were Bogarts, Will-o-Whips, and Wendigos---scary scythe wielding skeletons that were much more of a threat than the goblins could have ever hoped to be. My sneak would pick a horrible moment to cut out and then battle would again ensue. This fight didn’t go as smoothly—Superdx and I didn’t have a chance to rest up from our previous encounters with the goblins so we were both lacking in the MP department, especially my Taru friend who had been throwing out massive damage spells in order to keep us safe. Ackley finally made him/herself useful by healing us and we felled the beast before we ducked into a corner and rested. But wait….there wasn’t a way to advance in the dungeon now….!
After our break we looked about for a few minutes and couldn’t seem to find the route we needed to take. After a couple minutes of searching Superdx discovered that one of the walls was false and that we could go inside. And there it was: A huge open room full of Wendigos. If we failed to be stealthy here as we had in every other room up to this point we would all die horribly. There was a bit of looking around and the slaying of a few idle Wendigos that got in our path before I ventured a short distance away from the others and found a doorway that targeted as “Gate of Light.” I clicked it and got the mission’s ending Cutscene. Hooray for me! During all the storyline stuff I see in group chat at the bottom of my screen.

Ackley: Whoops.

And knew things were probably not going well for my friends. I tried to click through the rest of my cutscene as quickly as I could so I could go help Superdx face the onslaught of Wendigos that were killing my friends while I was busy listening to a King Cardian and one of the ministries go on about the Star Sibyl.

“Found: Test Answer Sheets”
Superdx: Yay!

Well, apparently my friends had managed to down the Wendigo and get the drop for the Aspir scroll. Random loot assignment gave him the sheets and then he decided that we may as well get two more of them to drop for the rest of the group. Superdx had apparently used his Manafont two-hour during that ordeal.

And so the Wendigo hunt began! And there were plenty of melee skill-ups for all of us. Well, except for Ackley who kept going AFK without saying anything despite the fact that he/she was the healer…even more interesting he/she insisted on continually casting Drain on our skeletal opponents despite the fact that they are clearly immune to the spell. I got 2 Gravity scrolls and learned the Red Lotus Blade WS before the second set of answer sheets dropped. Then we had another lovely aggro situation. We got attacked by a pair of Wendigos, and then immediately after another pair of them. This was an absolute mess. Our BLM was oom and our WHM was doing his/her best to keep the rest of us alive and healed. I was doing a little healing myself as I didn’t really trust Ackley to do the job properly but it was my job to bring these suckers down and protect my friends.

I hadn’t really given the Thunder spell much of a workout until that moment. To me it seems a bit too expensive—and I’ve never really been one to do a heck of a lot of nuking. But at that moment I needed to nuke my *** off; and boy did I. Wendigo #1 was completely and utterly vaporized by my spamming of Thunder. And the second was brought down enough that even though we were all out of MP we could melee him to death before we retreated back to a safe point to rest.

And what do you know, another set of answer sheets dropped. We were done here. We hauled in 3 test answer sheets, 8 or so bone chips, a rusty dagger, and 2 Gravity scrolls. Superdx cast Escape and we were out of there. I thanked my friends; for without them I would have never completed Written in the Stars. Superdx gave me a linkpearl to join is LS which I felt was a great honor. And then he decided that it was time to sleep. So he gave us all Warp 2 back to our homepoints and we called it a day. What fun. ^_^

Lessons learned:
*Its not really a spiffy thing to go and beg people for help, but sometimes it can’t hurt to ask someone politely if they’ll lend you a hand. If it wasn’t for the kindness of a stranger I’d have never finished that Mission—and I wouldn’t be in my spiffy new LS. Major props go to Superdx the Black Mage of the Odin server.

*The Portal Charm subquest is indeed doable AFTER you finish Written in the Stars. You can either give the redhaired Taru NPC the Rolanberry then for the charm or hand it to her before/during the Mission and come back for your Charm afterwards.
*Even an idiot can make it up to level 28.

*I need to level up my Black Mage subjob so I’ll have more MP with which to spam Thunder in emergency situations like that.

*I need to level up my Thief subjob so Test Answer Sheets (and other things) won’t take so bloody long to drop.

*Undead are immune to Drain—which makes sense."

Nope. You have the following options:

1. Switch allegiance, do the mission, get the item yourself.
2. When you want to go there, get a Windurstian (or ex-Windurstian) friend who has the Portal Charm, to open the door for you.
3. When you want to go there, get a RDM, BLM, and WHM together and open the door that way. You can, of course, be one of the three.
4. Do the Rhinostery quests to get the key item "Rhinostery Certificate" upon starting the last of the Rhinostery quests ("Toraimarai Turmoil"). This lets you enter Toraimarai Canal from Windurst Walls. Sneak through Toraimarai Canal to its "main entrance" in Horutoto, and you're inside the room having gone the long way around. Huge major nuisance, but it's the only method which can be done solo and does not require changing allegiance.

(Note that unlike the Portal Charm which opens the door for everyone to pass, the Rhinostery Certificate only works for you.)

Personally, I vouch for changing allegiance if you're high enough to tackle the enemies in that room anyway. Doesn't take very long to power-mission yourself up to rank 3, aside from having to find help with the dragon battle. After you get the Portal Charm, you can change back.

Ademdum, there may be a way to get the portal charm and NOT have to change alegiance. Some of us will be testing this soon and get back to you. If so we'll see about creating a new quest in windurst database (cause getting the portal charm, although a quest like activity with a quest like reqard: the portal charm, is not recorded in your quests). This means it probably doesn't count for fame. But would be better for the listing and finding of it.

Wellp looks like that's wrong. Tried the "take em thru the gate" technique. That ALSO seems to be limited to windurstians.
