Mission Orders

You must go to Castle Zvahl in Xarcabard. The President himself will brief you in his office.

Walkthrough

The Windurst Mission is called "The Shadow Awaits". You must speak with the Star Sybil after getting the mission from the guard.

You may need to talk to Halver and Prince Trion for a cutscene in order to enter the Shadow Lord fight. Only one party may take part in this mission at a time.

It is recommended you finish the quest "Northward" from Radeivepart (Ru'lude Gardens, Peace Monument) for a map of Castle Zvahl.

After you have the mission intitated, head to Xarcabard, then Castle Zvahl Baileys. Make your way in to Castle Zvahl Keep. Beware, there are multiple types of beastmen on the way in, some which detect by sound and others by sight.

Once in the Keep, you will need to make your way through several gates and Ore doors to the teleporters. You should kill the demons around the teleporters to avoid trains of mobs. Once you have gone through all the teleporters you will enter the Throne Room. There are no mobs in this area so you can use this place to med and buff. Once that is done head across the bridge to the tower and open the door to the Throne Room where the tomb of the Shadow Lord lies.

The first Shadow Lord form will be immune to almost all forms of magic. He later becomes immune to physical damage and so you must finish him off with magic. After you kill him he will of course get upset and come at you again. He will do only AE attacks so make sure to use Curaga spells.

After you are done head back to your home town to collect your 20,000 gil reward and Rank 6.

Shafted

well i got 75 pld 75smn[RL friend] 66thf 50brd 68nin and 57pld[myself] and we went to go do this...took a while to get there cause BRD wouldn't keep sneak and invisible upon himself to not get aggro'd...

well i got to area and mom had me go do something...came back and RL friend had already started to attack cause had LS event or W/e and also the nin had jumped in "tired of waiting"...

So i couldn't enter and i didn't get credit but the nin and brd and thf who i had helped het 5-1 so we could all get 5-2 got credit and i got shafted sitting at entrance to throne room...

So now i still am trying to get 5-2 pt together again....>.>

Did this with
SAM/RDM 55 (me)
DRK/WAR 55
RDM/xxx 55
BLM/xxx 65
WAR/NIN 55
WHM/NIN 74

No problem at all with the fight, but we had some aggros and deaths on the way to the throne room, mainly because the leader allieganced with other pt that didnt know the way XD The fun part is that we have never had everyone dying even in the worst moments, like when only me and the whm stayed alive against a huge link of quadavs and demons (warding circle ftw!!)
75 SMN solo? O.O

My linkshell did this one together:

66 SAM/WAR? (Kataki), 65 BST/NIN? (Lorin), 66 WHM/BLM (me), 75 SMN/WHM (Lunais)<< cheatzorz ~.^ (I can't remember SAM & BST's sub... Hmmm)

We told Kataki to keep his 2hr for the 2nd form, but he used it on the 1st form when he was weak to physical damage, which actually worked out fine in the end. SMN sent Fenrir in first and then BST (w/ Courier Carrie)and SAM went in next. I stood on the very edge of magic casting range (used about 2 Yagudo drinks)and kept the melee regen'd and healed, etc. Can't remember what Lunais did because being whm I always stand as far away as a I can... Anyway, we followed the usual procedures, alternating physical and magical damage (yay for Banish III!).

The reason I wanted to post was this, though... After defeating the first form, Lunais used Titan (If I remember correctly it was Earthsday) on Shadowlord while the rest of us moved away to rest mp & hp... I was so stoked for the next part... but then suddenly I see Lunais' MP drop from using 2hr... I asked, "What're you doin?" And Lunais replies, "I'm winning! :D" Less than 10 seconds later Shadowlord was dead... "What?? That's no fun!" I replied. So, I guess that means a 75 SMN can solo Shadowlord's second form no problem... Kind of a let down just sitting there doing nothing and watching him die... LOL

It was fun nonetheless. (*^_^)b

I figure I would lay down my experience with the Shadow Lord, as it was vastly different from everyone elses. I decided to make a solo attempt at him, however, having read that he becomes immune to Physical DMG, I tried my best to find a RDM or BLM. None wanted to try it, too many on 5-1, and those that had 5-2 didn't want to die. Okay, understandable. I brought my 58 DRK friend and he sub'd RDM, BLM was level 6, and RDM was the only mage sub up the par. After two deaths I discovered a pattern, and after we a RDM friend decided to help, I confirmed it, having beaten his supposed magic only form with a physical Jump attack. Here is what I learned:

The difference in my battle and in everyone elses is that mine was suppose to be long and drawn out, it's the way I do things. As hard as possible so I can obtain total and full enjoyment from an actual challenge, rather then watch several 75's end it all in seconds. No offense to those that do, that's just not my style. Because it was longer, I had the luxury of finding out things others won't see since it ends really fast.

At the start of the battle, he is immune to all magic as stated in the mission discription. at 45-50% HP he will raise his left hand and hold it there for a few seconds. At this time he remains immune to magical dmg, however, the moment he hand drops, his sword will obtain a purple glow, and he will now be immune to all forms of physical dmg and magical dmg will now hurt him (to include paralyze, gravity, and the absorb spells). During this form, everyone will normally -ga or III-IV him to death, however, as I did not have that the first two times, and the third time the RDM wasn't on his best game, we didn't have enough magic DMG to finish him off. This is where the interesting part begins. He will raise it left hand again (it seemed random, however, the time in between was long) and start casting a -ga spell or readying Dark Nova. While his hand is up, he will be weak to physical dmg again. It doesn't last long, so you'd need to pound everything into him and then some as fast as you can before the hand drops again.

After the first fight is over, he will change into a AoE monster and constantly throw out Implosion. He is exteremly weak HP wise, as I had 90 HP left after I finished his 'magic only' form with a Jump, about 35 mp, and the Wyvern was able to keep me alive (he had 15% HP) and survive four implosions. I had him at 1/4 HP before I finally hit the floor. Implosion also has a pattern that I noticed, though I wasnt exactly paying too close attention to really confirm. It would appear that the Implosions run in sets of 2. The 1st doing 120+ DMG (to me a 70 DRG), the 2nd doing only around 50+ DMG. Basically: 120 > 50 > 120 > 50 etc. etc. That is rather accurate, from my stand point, since I had hit 110 HP, threw myself a cure, and had 29 hp after the Implosion.

That's everything. Just figured I'd give everyone and exact run down of his pattern in terms of weakness. Hand goes up, Physical DMG, hand comes down, Magical DMG. I believe with enough juices to out last the magical form until the hand raises again, I could easily solo him as 70 DRG.

Have some fun with this fight... it's easy.

RE: Lvl
# Jan 23 2006 at 3:54 PM Rating: Decent
I would say that a party of level 60-ish players should be able to do it. Let me tell you my experience from last night.

Myself and 4 others from my LS (all level 65) got a 64 WHM to join us for this battle. Here was the party setup:
65 WAR/WHM (me)
65 THF/WHM
65 RDM/BLM
65 BLM/WHM
65 PLD/WAR
64 WHM/BLM

The THF and I subbed WHM so we could sneak/inviz ourselves, but we found out along the way that wasn't really necessary. I think we saw one Decent Challenge along the way, but everything else was Too Weak or Easy Prey. We did get aggro from some demons a few times, but they were EP so it was no problem at all.

We got to the Throne Room and headed into the battlefield. Everyone except for the PLD, that is. He had the mission, but he must not have talked to everyone that he needed to because he could not get in. So we were in a pickle. We decided to give it a try anyway.

Now we needed a tank, so we decided to make me (WAR) into one. The THF and RDM had some extra equipment on them that they loaned to me. I took off all of my attack up, evasion down items and replaced them with more defense-oriented gear. So we converted me from a damage dealer into a make-shift tank. I used Defender instead of the usual Berserk/Aggressor combo. Nobody had any tank food (except the PLD who was stuck outside- haha), so I just used some Sole Sushi.

We were able to beat him pretty damn easily. A party of 5 lvl 64/65 players with a WAR/WHM tank. I think my HP got into the red one time, but I'm a Galka so I still had like 500 or 600 HP left when that happened. If all 6 of us had made it into the battle, we would have owned the Shadow Lord even harder. I hope this helps some of you.

I still can't talk to Star Sybil. Halver told me to talk to the prince and I went and did that. I have the mission though. The quest to find a bride is cancelled also. Do I HAVE to talk to her?

Not trying to be mean or anything, for anyone else in this type of situation, lets look at this.

Halver said go talk to the prince, how does that equate to talking to the Star Sybil who is in a whole different country?

If I remember correctly, Halver sends you to talk to Prince Trion talk to him and get your CS before leaving San d'Oria.

This applys only to San d'Orian citizens.

can't you also pay bards in cities to do this?
otherwise just trade any item to a Goblin Footprint, usually found at the entrance to zones.

That was the most fun I have had in a long while. I went with this party after just doing 5-1 and I brought my friend, Shikigami (SMN75/WHM). I'm THF59/NIN at time of doing this. Anyway, Shiki and I were getting tired of waiting for this party that was taking 2 hours just to get to the place, which is stupid. Anyway, there was a bard (level 50) from the party waiting there and they were pretty smart unlike everyone else. My friend, the bard and I left the party and did the mission. All I can say is that Shiki owned that thing with like 20-30 mp for 3/4 of that fight. Just wanted to share because it was so freaking awesome. =p

My static group did this Saturday, all level 60, PLD, DRG, SMM, BLM-me. we picked up a 64 WHM JP who needed it, and had a 70's RDM along for the ride. The hardest part, imo with this set upwas just getting to the throne room. I guess the RDM hadnt been there since he had done it, so it took about 38 minutes from zoning into Zval to get to the top of the Castle. (what a cool place for SS by the way, awsome scenery, imo.)

We had studied the other posts, and knew what to expect. To his credit, the RDM did let us do most of the work, only nuking once, twice at the most, refreshing the SMM and WHM and PLD mostly.

We buff up, enter, melees start in. I give him a Choke and Drown to help their damage dealt and taken, and when i start seeing Shadow lord takes 0 damage,(for the record, i didnt see anywhere in the chat log, "The Shadow lors uses Invincable", and no animation so pay attention to chat log) I start with the nukes. a Fire II, Firaga II and Thunder II gave me the message, Austie defeats the shadow lord.

3rd form really wasnt to hard either, he does spam AOE implosion every 2-3 seconds, But a Water III, Aero III and BLizzaga II make shork work of that form.

then, the funny part. From all the posts, I thought I knew exactly what would happen in the CS, so to my shock, none of it did!!! I swore the game was broke, or a glitch. Needless to say, when I got to Norg, I got my memory back, lol.

Gonna kill that Taru BLM/DRK for what he did to me.

This mission is so much fun. I would say it is my favorite battle right behind ZM8.

When i did 5-2 I was a lvl 59. The pt setup was

59 RDM
59 BLM
61 BLM
59 WHM
59 DRK
66 PLD

We kicked some major ***. I had a blast because I was the only melee, so when SL was resistant to magic, it was all on me to deal the damage, which was really sweet, I just kept adding more and more JAs. Only sucky part was since I was only 59, my best ws was Vorpal Scythe which only did 683 dmg even when I was going all out. I really want to do 5-2 again now and go all out as drk/war for some guillotine action.

PLDs are melee too, and RDMs probably should if you're low on melees. I know it's easy to forget about PLDs since we do all of about 20 damage per swing. But we do, you know, keep you alive and stuff. ^^

Planning to do this on Bahamut soon, send me a /tell if interested.

Just a tip, as I got myself in a bad spot just GETTING the mission from San D'Oria. As it turned out, I had the Paladin AF Body Quest going at the same time as the 5-2 quest, so after I talked to the mission giver at the Gates, go to talk to Prince Trion...he tells me about the old man for the Paladin AF. Ok..go talk to Halver (or whatever his name is), he talks about the quest where you find a girl for Prince Trion. Hmmm. I seem to be caught in a loop, but I didn't know it at the time. So...needless to say I got to the Throne Room and got denied. My word of advice for San D'Oria that HAPPEN to have some quests in the Chateau going...make sure Halver tells you to go see Prince Trion. From there, make sure Prince Trion TELLS you to go to Castle Zhval Baileys...cause if he doesn't, your outta luck.

Good luck! ^^

Btw, for San D'Oria, the mission is called: The Shadow Lord

Excellent question. Nothing here suggested that the trip would be so circuitous so I thought it would be like 5-1, show up and fight. We had a pick-up party including 70+ PLD and RDM so we really squandered a great opportunity when no one was prepared to risk trying different routes.

You really need to Google for a map. I found one at Anala WHM but there may be others. It is a really long trip when someone's sneak or invis. is wearing every 30 seconds and you have to stop for a 3 min. fight. If you want to blaze your own trail be prepared for this.

I'm looking forward to trying again.

Well there's no minimum level restriction, no, but you likely won't even survive the journey through the castle. You'll need Sneak and Invis up at all times and the SL spams AOEs.

You won't live even with high levels holding your hand through it, so you might want to wait until you're at least level 50.

Besides it's a lot more fun actually taking part in the fight instead of having lackies do it for you.

I did this mission last night with only 1 lvl 75 helping and my self. this was the set up we used.

75 rdm/nin
50 whm/blm (me)

since he has done it before by the time i was out of teh cs he already had the shadow lord down to 3/4ths hp. so basicly all i did was heet him hasted kpet my stone skin up and put regen 2 on him form time to time. 15 minutes into the fight form 1 dies. Then i get another cs and teh shadow lord walks toward me rdm/nin atatcks and takes hate and runs into the corner near the entrance and i run up to the grave. rest up mp. rdm is down to 150 mp and full health. throws up stone skin and phalax and converst and cure IV twice hits full hp agai nand goes back to town.. i do the same as before.... 5 minutes later form 2 dies. Over all time for our dou 20 minutes and 45 seconds. not a record but it was fun proving you don't need alot of people for this.

I've fought the shadow lord atleast 5 times, and heres the strategy I tell all of my parties before we fight it. Having a BLM, WHM and RDM in the party REALLY makes the fight a lot easier. BLM, RDM, WHM, PLD or NIN, and a couple more DDs (maybe a DRK or 2 for Stun) about level 60 should have no problem taking the shadow lord down if you follow my strategy. It wouldn't hurt if the mages have a couple ethers on them:

The Shadow Lord has 3 forms. His 3rd form is the most deadly, so save your 2 hours until his 3rd form. When we enter, this is his first form. The Shadow Lord will not take any damage from magic spells, he will still be able to get the status effects of magic though, so BLM save your mp. He occasionally uses AOE attacks, so (BLM or DRK) make sure to stun it.
At about halfway down HP, he'll glow for a second and change to his second form, he'll be immune to physical attacks but vulnerable to magic. BLM, this is when you nuke the hell out of it. After it's HP goes down to 0, there will be a short cutscene, then he will come back and change to his 3rd form, and start imploding.
Implosion is the attack name, and it is a very strong AoE attack that he will spam. DRK, stun it like crazy. BLM, use manafont and nuke it to death. PLD (if you have it), use invincible to keep hate off the BLM and WHM.

Now, since Implosion has such a huge AoE range, do NOT have your mages spread out, have everyone gather together right at the shadow lord. Theres a very good reason for this. To be out of range of Implosion, the shadow lord would have to be at the entrance while someone goes to the other side of the room, right next to the coffin thingy. But doing this does no good at all, if a mage does this, yes they are out of the range of Implosion, but they are well out of casting range of their spells. So have everyone stay together and the WHM spam Curaga. If the RDM has to use convert, then either put up stoneskin and use convert right after the SL uses Implosion or run to the other side of the room.

Everyone must do their best to kill this form as fast as they can and keep everyone alive.
