Mission Orders

You must go to Castle Zvahl in Xarcabard. The President himself will brief you in his office.

Walkthrough

The Windurst Mission is called "The Shadow Awaits". You must speak with the Star Sybil after getting the mission from the guard.

You may need to talk to Halver and Prince Trion for a cutscene in order to enter the Shadow Lord fight. Only one party may take part in this mission at a time.

It is recommended you finish the quest "Northward" from Radeivepart (Ru'lude Gardens, Peace Monument) for a map of Castle Zvahl.

After you have the mission intitated, head to Xarcabard, then Castle Zvahl Baileys. Make your way in to Castle Zvahl Keep. Beware, there are multiple types of beastmen on the way in, some which detect by sound and others by sight.

Once in the Keep, you will need to make your way through several gates and Ore doors to the teleporters. You should kill the demons around the teleporters to avoid trains of mobs. Once you have gone through all the teleporters you will enter the Throne Room. There are no mobs in this area so you can use this place to med and buff. Once that is done head across the bridge to the tower and open the door to the Throne Room where the tomb of the Shadow Lord lies.

The first Shadow Lord form will be immune to almost all forms of magic. He later becomes immune to physical damage and so you must finish him off with magic. After you kill him he will of course get upset and come at you again. He will do only AE attacks so make sure to use Curaga spells.

After you are done head back to your home town to collect your 20,000 gil reward and Rank 6.

I think the numbers people were quoting earlier (55 and 60) are estimates of what level party you'd be able to do this in. A "perfect" level 55 party (with food, drinks, potions, etc) can do it, and a good level 60 party (which is what most people will wind up doing this with) can do it. If you want an easier fight, wait until you get a higher level.

Of course, that's just guessing, since I haven't done this one yet.

Also, in the origional Japanese version of the game (before the Zilart expansion came out) there were no missions after 5-2, and rank 6 was the highest possible.

My goal for this game was to get at least rank 6. that goal was met last night. I got FFXI as a Christmas present last year in 2003. It is now 12/01/04. It took me nearly a year to defeat all the tricks, traps, and levels. I am now finally done with the game in its original form (which was small, only rank one through 5 was available - the zilart update vastly complicated the game afterwards what with extra jobs and missions). Granted, it took me awhile because I switched my main job from Dark Knight to Samurai near the start of Summer. It was with Samurai and Demon Killer that I stormed Zvahl. I am glad to have met my goal. I guess now I can fiddle around with getting the uber-est equipment or whatever now.

One more thing. I've been a gamer all my life (I'm 24 I owned the original Nintendo back in 1986 or whatever) and this has been one of the longest and hardest games I've ever played. Upon first playing I was overwhelmed. It is a deep and involved gaming experience. Good job, SquareEnix.
cant get the mission

Why cant i start this mission? When i go to ru'lude gardens and try to talk to my mission NPC he said "Nothing here why dont u try the administratives direction" and then i go throught the door to the archdukes room and it says the Archduke is away. I even tried talking to the NPC that gives missions back on bastok. Yes i hav full rank points and im lvl 53. I hav been trying to get this mission started for the past month now what is wrong?

There is more than one npc who gives missions in bastok isnt there? Try them all, and if you have no current mission, and a full (or even a bit less than full) rank bar, it should give you the quest!

A friend of mine from windurst tried the Windurst Waters gate to get her mission and she couldnt, so she went to woods and it worked. Dont know if location had anything to do with it but its worth a try.

ohhh my- i just did this last night

our pty was:
72 rdm
75 whm
58 sam
57 Rdm
61 war
60 thief

it was a little hard getting to the shadow lord because our sam kept neededing invis/ and agging things *sighs* and those teleports are tricky because the moment a mob spots you they are on you like glue.

Over all the Battle agenst the shadow lord was real easy. Just be sure you have high level melee. His AOL was MAD though! i was to scared to convert because he was hitting me with 140 every 10 seconds >.< Luckily me and the other RDM didn't have to convert.

Did this with a mostly LS party:

60 PLD/WAR - pickup PLD who got full AF just prior to us departing, needed the Mission
59 WAR/NIN - me, needed the Mission
59 RDM/BLM - LS leader, secondary nuker/primary debuffer, needed the Mission
59 RDM/WHM - LS member and static PT RDM, secondary healer/secondary buffer, needed the Mission
56 BLM/WHM - LS member, primary nuker/secondary debuffer/tertiary healer, needed the Mission
70 WHM/SMN - Friend, primary healer/primary buffer, our guide to the Throne Room

Getting to the Throne Room was quite tedious, but carefully managed it shouldn't cause too much trouble. Know where to hide/recast sneak & invis and you should be fine.

The various teleporters near the end of Zvahl Keep takes about 3-5 seconds to activate (on its own) after you stand on it, FYI

Our strategy:

Buff up prior to entering, eat foods, cast shadows. Haste after entering. WHM Reraised just in case bodily waste hits the fan.

-First Form-
Melees save TP and engage as normal with some JA (no 2hrs yet), mages conserve MP and only do limited debuffing/healing/buffing as needed.

Shadow Lord will do his Invincible special when he has around 1/3 life left. PLD 2hrs at this time. Mages start nuking like mad but without resorting to 2hr unless absolutely necessary.

-End of First Form-

-Second Form-
Basically you need to take him down as quickly as possible during Shadow Lord's second form.

Shadow Lord attacks you immediately so make sure you have adequate MP left from first form. He will only do AoE specials.

Melees use all JAs including 2hr, and use TP saved from first form. Basically go all-out on attack since you won't get hit physically.

Mages nuke as fast as possible (use 2hr if needed). WHM spam curaga and heal as needed.
-End of Second Form-

Saving our TP and melee 2hr really helped during second form by taking him down asap. We beat him with a comfortable/conservative margin of around 11 minutes with cutscene.
fun stuff

Wow, first attempt, wanted to do 5-1 and 5-2 in the same day....got 5-1 done and was 3 seconds from the record, go to do 5-2 2 ppl leave, no problem get a high lvl blm and high lvl war to help, get to the yagudos and the war dcs...pt waits 30 mins...no show on war, escape warp goodbye......2 weeks later....

Wow, fun stuff yet again, randomly see the guy i tried this with last time, now 5 lvls higher and even with me almost, shouting for 5-2, well its been a few days might as well try to go and play with shadowlord...again. Halfway into castle our pld threatens to leave if we keep getting aggro...like we're trying....then.,..we make it to throne room...after 1 hour, and our lvl 73 blm is afk.....for a long time...pld threatens to leave again.....then we hear the blm saying not to fight....relief! No wait, the mnk is with him...whats going on, we can't see thier hp or mp....WHATS GOING ON!!!! Mnk says WTF! we all panic....they zone to us...relief again. And just because my arm is hurting so typing is begining to pain me, we killed shadow lord in 10 mins 1 second this is after our lvl 45 smn died 4 times on the way to him, and our lvl 55 sam died once on the way......and then they both died again in the final form...lol

so, pt config was this

56RDM/BLM(me)
55SAM/WAR (Tenshiiryu)
73BLM/WHM (Rydiu)
67PLD/WAR (Fignut)
45SMN/WHM (Davricle....and his casino)
64MNK/??? (Katelin...last listed...but we wouldn't have done it without her...or Rydiu)

Thanks all, it was fun....and long, lol Lets do some ZM now! ^^

SERVER = BISMARCK

OK the image maps listed in the previous post were VERY VERY helpful, use them.

Our party was something like : (at college cant remember exactly)

Xaeon - 62 PLD
Batton - 60 RDM
Xysphus - 52 WAR
Sibent - 63 DRK
Sarahrox - 58 WHM
Ashelus - 58 BLM

Getting thru the castle was easy enough, but when we got to the rooms with the gates ( ul know what i mean ) we decided f**k sneak + invisible, lets just kill everything, as most things were EP.
Went thru the ports and up the steps... long scarey walk to the throne room. Talk Tactics : listed bellow : and buff up. In we go.

The first Shadow lord first for all melee smash to pieces, WHM BLM RDM concentrating on giving the tank paralyna and support healing, not much they can do to damage it. When the melee hit the Shadow Lord for 0, its hard for the PLD to keep the hate, and so... INVINCIBLE.
blah blah blah nuke a lot that ones dead. manafont is good here.

Now he respawns and spams constant AOE, but if your similar levels to me this is no problem as he is much weaker, RDM WHM heal and curaga.. BLM nuke, melee slash him up. DEAD.

Time of 12 minutes.. but we knew we werent gonna smash the record. Server Record : 5 minutes.

Now for the AMAZING CUT SCENE, although i highly suggest once u get Rank 6 go to norg to get a more detailed cutscene.

TRUST ME THIS MISSION IS NOT AS BAD AS IT SOUNDS

Friends of mine did this last week.

Pld73, Whm74, and Rdm72. (yeah, level 72 and still rank 5!) I was going to be the party, but got DC running through the castle. I couldn't get back on until after they had entered the "battle room". I was in the Throne Room, so they could invite me into the party, but I could not get past the door to join the fun.

I was able to watch their healths from outside. Not once did anyone dip into yellow health for more than a few seconds. The fight was long, but there was never any danger.

I helped some people this past weekend with this quest. Everyone was levels 56-60 (besides me). ThundagaIV did about 1200 points of damage and BlizzagaIV did about 1100.. his "immune to physical damage" form was pretty much dead in 2 spells!
Shadow Lord.. Dead!

69 Brd/Whm
56 Whm/Blm(Me!)
61 Pld/War(Vegan)
57 Blm/Whm(Veg's friend)
70 Thf/War

Record on Midgardsormr was 5:37.. we got 6:07

Hmm.. I swore that these links were posted here....

Here are some diagrams of a possible path to take to get to the BC fight with the Shadow Lord.

http://home.comcast.net/~azuretwilight4/m12baileys2.jpg
[not sure why the drawn path ends on m12baileys2.jpg, but you continue towards the west]

after this map, there will be a series of teleports, go through each one until you port to a room with 3 paths. Don't forget to cast invisible (or use powder) after each teleport.

http://home.comcast.net/~azuretwilight4/m12baileys3.jpg

F7 is the Throne Room.

If you have someone who is lvl68+, they can open the doors without aggro. I believe a lvl68 char will not get aggro until the very end. It should be required that everyone (below lvl68) bring Silent Oil and Prism Powder. Another advantage of having someone lvl68+ on the run is that you can see that person and follow them. The dash through the first two maps is probably the most nerve racking.. Also, getting through the teleporters isn't too fun either.

These are not my maps, btw...

forgot to tell you if you are useing Flash do it as .mov it compresses the movies automatically. Yes it loses some quality, but better than nothing at all. :)
This is one web designer to another. My website is not up yet but with in a few weeks it will be and i will post mu url here so you can look at it. It is done in Flash and Dreamweaver there you can see the difference in flash comprestion and non compressetion.

me rdm 61, another rdm 59, and the rest were 60, thf, drk, pld, bst with his crab which everyone in the party was laughing at cuzz he was cool looking. Anyway, we did fine, cept our thf died and all our HP is in red, if the other rdm converted and chainspell a little earlier we would of been fine but its all gravy, my suggestion is for the first form, keep ure mana up and only cure when u have to. Also, let all the melee people keep their TP and not use it on first form.

Second form blast all of ure weapon skill on him, then mages nuke him to death, once his life is 1/4 convert, cure 4 then have rdm if u have 1 use chainspell then bury him to fire 2 and blizzard 2. ^^ Good luck

A party of mine just broke the Midgardsormr record with a time of 9:30.

Config:
75 Rng/nin
73 Blm/whm
73 Brd/whm
58 Whm/blm (for rank 6)
61 Blm/whm (for rank 6)
58 Rdm/blm (for rank 6)

We didn't bring a tank simply for the reason that there weren't any currently planning from our LS.
We took our time btw (e.g. reading the cut scenes and starting the fight). It would have been easy to do it a minute faster.

Strategy:
Pre-fight: Being the chef I am, I gave melon pie+1 to the blms and whm. I used a brain stew for myself. and gave a meat chiefkabob to the rng. I used yagudo drinks on myself instead of casting refresh, but the other mages were cheap so I refreshed only two of them once inside. the fight was fast. We buffed before heading in to the burning circle.

Fight:
I started with elemental-seal + gravity. Ranger pwned it using everything he had. I also managed to land paralze and poison II, but couldn't stick slow (only one attempt).
Then the blms hit it with light nukes, anything level 2 was resisted I think. Not really sure what the bard did, I but I know it involved buffs and debuffs. After the first 30 seconds of mayhem I checked on everyones' vitals and then medded until the shadow lord took second form.
Once the shadow lord took second form I recast gravity for some reason.. it didnt really matter because the AoE was very wide range. Don't think you can avoid it unless you're further away than spell range.
Then I hit chainspell and started wailing on it with blizzard two. I only cast 3 times before it died. I didn't even have to convert. The other blms were very effective.

The ideal party for breaking the record would probably be 3 rangers and 3 black mages. Shadow lord has about 14k hp. The ranger did about 60% of that.

Hope that helps, Good luck!

Slug shot to rampage did over 2k DMG pally and war did thier 2hr there, and I did a little melee, kept everyone refreshed, and some debuff. I coverted as soon as second fight start, WHM keeps spawn with curaga, and I stone skined myself, and a cure IV, then chain spell, nuke away.. then RNG eagle eye shot it, blm nuked **** out of it.. be we know.. the fight was over.. everyone was like... that's it????????

70 RDM/BLM
58 RDM/BLM
57 WHM/BLM
56 THF/NIN
55 MNK/WAR
55 BLM/WHM

Was our setup. We got lucky in that a level 70 still needed mission 5-2. Something you may notice is we had no tank, the plan was to Phalanx, Stoneskin, Blink whatever the 70 RDM and have him tank, but in the heat of the battle the MNK ended up tanking.

MNK went in on the first form and Hundred Fisted the Shadow Lord, bringing him to just under half health. At this point we were hitting for 0 so the mages nuked him till about 1/4 health, and hits started clicking again so we finished him off with melee.

The 70 RDM Converted right after the second form and got 2 Cure 4s shoved up his butt about 0.5 seconds before an AoE attack that would have killed him hit. The RDMs now chainspelled and nuked like hell along with the BLM, while the WHM through out Curagas... in about 1 minute after the shadowlord was dead.

We completed it in 10 minutes, the record was 9 minutes, so we were satisfied.

After beating the Archlich together and setting the new record, we set off to right this guy. When we started fighting him... we were thinking "wow... this is kinda easy...." We hadn't seen anything yet. His 2nd form didn't even get a chance to go immune to physical. We tore the 2nd form up like he was absolutely nothing.... my Tachi: Jinpu did 1000 damage to him and Blms nuked the crap outta him. I thought "uhm... was that it?" .. and it was. Well first time I tried this I got pwned. So we waited till today to try our rematch. Fought him two times, I'll give my take on both.

First fight:
thf60/nin30 (me)
pld61/war30
rdm60/whm30
blm57/whm
blm58/wm
whm54/blm

We went in telling rdm to keep mp for second form and only to spot heal and cast slow and such.

Toook a little while, and well I found out dancing edge owns, i did it once before he got to half hp and then again after his invincible wore to kill him

In second form we were a bit low on mp and hp so one of the blms mana fronted and i use DE again to kill him. The whm had to bene once.
We won with all of us in yellow hp.
Oh and the pld had to use invincible after one of my De's in the first form since Provoke and sheild bash wasnt doing it.

Second time
same set up minus the 58 blm, he got swapped for a 55 mnk. THe mnk i must say didnt do alot of dmg, i think he missed alot.
We knew it would be tougher since we didt have that extra blm and the first form was. I did a couple De's in first form (700+ dmg each) without a trick partner. And the mages were really low on mp and the blm manafronted to finish him off and it carried to second form

This time I told pld to save tp till the second for and if not for that we wouldve all died. All mages were low and the whm slipped up and got killed by aoe with 200mp left.

So to start off second form pld voked and i got behind and he did vorpal for 330 dmg
I did sneak dancing edge for 760 dmg
which chained for another 350 dmg
Lets just say his hp went from full to about 25% and after a spell or two and random melle he was dead .

second form took 20 seconnds or less with renkei
Mnk two houred but only got about 2 hits in becausse it died so fast.

Id say second form has about 2k hp and if you save tp you can kill it with low hp/mp and no whm ;)

Shadow Lord 1 - Xave 0

Joined a pick-up party to defeat the Shadow Lord. We had:

65 Drg 59 Rdm 55 Rdm
61 Sum ?? Brd ?? Blm

Everyone died at the ShadowLord. Two people died on the way.

First, learn the Castle. The zones you have are:

Xarcabard/Bailies
Bailies/Keep
Keep/ThroneRoom

Due to some miscommunication and misunderstandings, party members believed that each map had its own zone.

My suggested path through the castle is:

Continue until you get to the four way intersection, G-8, near Dark Spark. DS is east, behind you is west, you can either go north or south. I prefer to go south. When walking through zones I prefer mobs that aggro sight. Continue along the path. Once you go over the bridge take a right and head to E/F 8 (Note: This is not a zone).

You will be on the lower level hallways. You should be heading south into Orc territory. Follow the path and take a left. Go to the stairs at I-9. Take the stairs up to the second level. DO NOT drop down the holes. Now on the second level, travel west to G-9, then head south to the stairs. This is Yagudo territory. Take the stairs to the first level and take a left. Follow the path to the four way intersection in H-9. Heaad north to the center of the map. At G/H-8 there is another stairway to the second level. Take the stairs and take the hallway to the west. The zone is at E/F-8.

Follow the path to H-8 and take a right. You will need someone to open the doors. This area has goblins. Once through the first door, head East, North, open door to the North. Open the first East door. There are four more doors to open, but it is a continuous hallway to the next map.

Once you enter the small room on the next floor, open the door, east, then go south, open the door south, and continue south to a hallway. Continue south in the hallway, then west, south, and west. Follow this hallway to the next map, E-8.

The first teleporter is in the middle of the next room, H-8. Once someone teleports, there seems to be a delay until the next person can port. If everyone is on the teleporter, everyone will warp. We were able to get through this area with Invisible. You will be teleported into a room full of demons. There is only one hallway, leading to a platform with another teleporter. There are four teleporters you need to take. The last teleporter will warp you to the next map.

From this room, I believe you can go north or south. We went south, west, north, and west. The zone is at F/G-7. There is a door that you need to open to get to the zone.

Once you zone, you can rest up to full. Cross the bridge to the other tower, buff up, and click on the Tomb Door, to start the BCNM battle.

We did OK against the first form, considering we only had one DD/Tank (Drg). Unfortunately, the Sum and Blm were at 66-75% MP and both Rdm were under 33% MP. I used a Rollandberry Pie at the start and a Yagudo drink during battle. It was nearly impossible to Refresh. I was constantly Curing. The second form completely owned us. The AOE really sucks and did about 166-233 damage to everyone every 7-10 seconds. Brd>>Drg>>Rdm>>Blm>>Me>>Sum died. He was very low on life, just a sliver left on his HP bar when I died.

Other LS members did this. They brought along two Whms (one lvl 75) and ppl still died, but they were successful. You need Curaga for this battle. The second form hate didn't seem to be important, cuz the AOE hits everyone anyway.

Rated this way up -- it should be included with the main guide as a listing of how to get through Castle Z. Navigation is a serious beast in that place.

Ok, I have read the entire thread but just want to confirm as I have friends who have had trouble getting in to fight the shadow lord.
I'm from Sandy, talked to Halver, then to Trion, he tells me to go to Xaracbard. I went back to Trion just in case, and he says I can find more answers in S.Sandy. In my missions, it says "Shadow Lord".
Can I get in to fight this guy now??
Thank you very much for your imput, I don't want to get all the way there and then not get in.Smiley: banghead
