Mission Orders

You must go to Castle Zvahl in Xarcabard. The President himself will brief you in his office.

Walkthrough

The Windurst Mission is called "The Shadow Awaits". You must speak with the Star Sybil after getting the mission from the guard.

You may need to talk to Halver and Prince Trion for a cutscene in order to enter the Shadow Lord fight. Only one party may take part in this mission at a time.

It is recommended you finish the quest "Northward" from Radeivepart (Ru'lude Gardens, Peace Monument) for a map of Castle Zvahl.

After you have the mission intitated, head to Xarcabard, then Castle Zvahl Baileys. Make your way in to Castle Zvahl Keep. Beware, there are multiple types of beastmen on the way in, some which detect by sound and others by sight.

Once in the Keep, you will need to make your way through several gates and Ore doors to the teleporters. You should kill the demons around the teleporters to avoid trains of mobs. Once you have gone through all the teleporters you will enter the Throne Room. There are no mobs in this area so you can use this place to med and buff. Once that is done head across the bridge to the tower and open the door to the Throne Room where the tomb of the Shadow Lord lies.

The first Shadow Lord form will be immune to almost all forms of magic. He later becomes immune to physical damage and so you must finish him off with magic. After you kill him he will of course get upset and come at you again. He will do only AE attacks so make sure to use Curaga spells.

After you are done head back to your home town to collect your 20,000 gil reward and Rank 6.

Make sure you have enough rank points, if you've completed rank 5-1 mission, but can't start this quest, trade some crystals to you country gate guard.

Also, 55 is not the min level, I got this mission at level 53.

Once again... Minimum level reflects the recommended minimum level to complete the quest/mission without getting your @$$ handed to you, not the level required to be assigned the mission. Missions are based on having a high enough rank and having completed the prerequisite missions - nothing more.

Well, okay, you have to be of the right country too. ^_^

I did this one last night as part of a party of five.

67 PLD/WAR
60 SAM/WAR
56 RDM/BLM (me)
54 RDM/WHM
53 RDM/BLM

We used sneak/invis through most of the Castle, and really only fought when we had to. Links in there can be very, very nasty.

Our original strategy for the boss was to go in, let the PLD and the SAM beat on him until he reached the point where only magic damaged him, then have the other two RDMs use Chainspell and nuke him. When he entered his second form, the third RDM (me) was to Convert and Chainspell nuke him (I was the only one with Blizzard II), and the SAM was to use his 2 hr so that we could take him down quickly before his AoE took all of *us* down.

The first part went pretty much according to plan, but it was very slow. The RDM nukes were being resisted quite a bit, so even after the dual-Chainspells, the Shadowlord was still standing. We just took it slowly and rested up while the Paladin used Invincible and tanked it.

When the Shadowlord entered his second form, I hit Convert and Chainspell, tossed one Cure III on myself and another Cure on the Samurai since I knew he was about to take a heap of hate, and started nuking at the same time as the SAM used his 2 hr. I had enough time to cast exactly two nukes before the SAM had completely and utterly eviscerated the Shadowlord with his crazy self-chaining weaponskills. I was rather sad that I didn't get a chance to nuke him more, but the SAM beating the snot out of the Shadowlord like that was certainly one of the coolest things that I have seen so far in this game. =P

We survived with only five, but it took a very long time, and was very harrowing when the Shadowlord took his second form. I had subbed BLM to add more power to my nukes, but if I ever do it again, I will leave the nuking to someone else and go as /WHM instead. Curaga would have been handy. His AoEs are nasty, and he pretty much spams you with them.

Oh, and the cutscenes both in the Shadowlord's Throne Room and in Norg after the battle are REALLY nifty. I feel like I found more plot last night than I have in the previous 56 levels all combined!

In short...

* SAM are super cool.
* /WHM is helpful. I'm gonna use it the next time I do this.
* This can be done with only five, and it can be done without a BLM. It takes a lot of patience though, and you should be ready for a long fight.

Good luck to everyone. =)

Just thought I would share real quick.

We originally had a party of 6...

PLD, DRG, RNG, BLM, WHM, RDM.

We got to the Throne Room, and the poor PLD didn't have it setup correctly, so we were fighting without our tank ^^; Luckily the DRG had WAR subbed, was galka, and did an extremely badass job tanking him. First part of the fight was a breeeeeze. I made sure to remind all mages to have stoneskin up at all times, and reapply after AOE attacks. That kept all mages at full HP the whole time.

After his transformation, I had only about 104 MP left and about the same for the WHM... RDM had used convert during the last battle and still had about 400 MP left. Now after he transforms... he spams the AOE a LOT... like one right after another, so we were all yellow HP in about 20 seconds. WHM stood in the middle, and used BENE... RDM got off a Blizzard 2, I got off a Stone III, and I think the ranger used a Sidewinder. He went down and we all had full HP at the end.

Very very fun fight and I'm amazed we did so well with a party of 5, between 59-62. Can't wait to fight him again when helping others.

BTW >> I used the maps listed below, VERY helpful. I would like to mention on the map with the red circle, just go past the red circle, through the door, and to the right. Follow this up the stairs to the right and go up each teleport. We saw a high level SMN fighting an NM up there with Fenrir in the 2nd teleport, but he ran out of MP and died ; ; So be careful of the NM.

I see alot of posts about how easy this guy is and well i think its BS.

My pt was able to fight everything the whole way up with no problems, often fighting 3 mobs at a time. We turned it into a skillup pt, i went using my horribly underleveld sword and got 8 skillups along the way.

anyway, we didnt have a blm and I think that was our problem. The first part went well, till he was impervious to melee, our whm and rdm nuked and pretty much used all their mp up.

when the seconnd form came we got him down to half hp and he killed the rdm and whm with a couple aoe's and then the pally and war and then a last one finshed off me and the sam. Maybe its easy with high level help or multiple blms but definatly not without either.

my pt was:
thf56/nin
pld60/war
war61/nin
sam61/thf
rdm60/blm
whm52/blm

Not hard.

We were originally:

58 PLD (me), 60 DRK, 60 RDM, 59 WHM, 59 BLM, 57 THF

But then the RDM d/c and didn't return after about 20 minutes of waiting then very luckily my Lv68 BLM friend logged on and said he would help.
We went up to the keep just fine but during the teleport parts we got some aggro and they would stop until we zoned into the Throne Room so they eventually grew into a 20+ mob train but luckily the BLM could Sleepga them and run a while, cast Stoneskin and repeat.
We finally entered the throne room but realised the WHM was still in the keep.
My BLM friend went back to get her and told her to stand in one spot without moving.
Well she ignored that and was running around and got caught in the train and died immediately.
The BLM was midway into Raising her when she just Home Pointed and called us all idiots for letting her die ¬_¬
We thought what the heck, we can try it with 5... but we had NO healers, only the BLMs with their WHM subs could heal us.
We buff up and eat all our food and enter the battlefield.
The DRK uses Meditate then engages the Shadow Lord and starts off with a Guillotine.
I go behind SL (Shadow Lord) for the THF to SATA off me and then I Provoke and use all my other abilities to maintain hate.
Things are going fine until the Shadow Lord becomes immune to physical attacks so the BLMs both Manafont and start nuking like hell.
They get all the hate so I Invinvible + Provoke + Flash and believe it or not still didn't peel the hate off.
He finally dies and goes onto the AoE form and things start to look worse.
Everyone's health goes into yellow or worse and I thought we weren't going to make it but SL is much weaker in this stage and the DRK used Souleater + Blood Weapon + Guillotine and pretty much took half of its life away and then I used Seraph Blade at 300% for around 350 damage and that took it down to 30% health.
The 68 BLM had enough MP for a final Thundaga II and finished him off.

We were all amazed that we did it with 5 and not a single death. :D

Very fun fight and mission.

You can start this quest from any of the Windurst NPCs that give you missions, it seems. Hopefully, that holds true for the other nations, so you won't need to start it in Ru'Lude Gardens if you just happen to be in your home city.

Teehee we did this yesterday, party consisted of:
69Thf
55Brd
55Rng
55Whm
54Mnk
53Pld

I won't discuss the first time we went in, cuz that second form 0wned us all... eventually even the lvl 69 cuz he was all alone. So we waited till we got spit out, and I reraised and got everyone up.
Second time went a lot smoother, (although the Rng died after a little sidewinder action) 1184!
But we rested to full just before his second form appeared while the Thf blink tanked it.

Then the implosion spamming 2nd form appeared... It was nasty! Everyone got into red and I was kinda losing it, thank god the thf was nice enough to point out I could use my 2 hour =P
So I did and got everyone but the Mnk, but Cure IV took care of that! After that he was a wuss ^^

All in all a kick-*** mission with a kick-*** fight. ^-^

just got rank 6

our party was WHM55 (me), BLM53, PLD54, DRK56, THF57 and had a MNK75 help us.

we got to the castle and since we had a level 75 monk with us, we just killed everything in sight instead of stealth the entire way. we did have to stealth when there were a lot of mobs close together.

1 gob on the platform above us aggrod and linked with 4 others... the blm stupidly cast aeroga 2 or some strong AOE and got all the hate and died.
we killed the gobs i raised the blm and we continued.

we got to the strong floating eyes (iris something) they aggrod and cast burst on the blm, killing him again. i raised and we continued.

we finally reached the throne room. we buffed then found out that the drk didn't get the mission yet >_<
we had already entered the battledfield so we couldn't even warp the poor guy home.

well we had to fight the shadow lord with 5 people.

at the begining, the monk was tanking and pummeling with asuan fists and other things and got its hp down to half. it used some strong AOE knocking everyones hp to yellow. i benedictioned because i jumped the gun.

when the shadow lord's hp got to half and started resisting the melee attacks, the blm then nuked the crap out of it and i helped with a few holies and banishga 2s. the blm finished it off with a nicely timed elemental seal + freeze.

then we celebrated killing him, then we didn't know we had to kill him AGAIN.

he kept imploding and the blm died again. i dont know what happened next, but the shadow lord died. everyone's hp was in red.

so, whitemages, SAVE benediction until the second battle.
Curse SE!

Last night a few friends and I got together a party consisting of 70 BLM, 54 SAM, 60 BST, 60 PLD, 57 WHM (me), and a 57 DRG..
The biggest pain about this mission is getting to the Shadow Lord, in my opinion.. It is a VERY hefty hike up there. We sneak'ed/invis'ed up there, and had the BLM recast on us, since he didn't get aggro until higher up in the castle.
Once we got there we buffed up, discussed the battle plan, and went in ^^.
The Shadow Lord is incredibly easy.. He wasn't hitting our PLD for anything worthwhile, and we were pretty much taking it to him. Just about before his first form is dead, I notice I'm disconnecting... So i get dc'ed, and log on to find the party dead, and the shadow lord at about 1/5 health or so. I'm already buffed up, so I drink a Melon Juice, cast reraise, and charge him.. Lol
His Aoe at this point was doing 112 damage to me, which I could have handled a long while, if I hadn't ran out of Mp ^^. I got him down to a sliver of life with Holy, Banish, and Banish II, but it got real tough when I had to start using my last remaining MP just to heal myself.
Eventually, I ran out of MP and he put an end to my valiant effort to save vana'diel.. But I swear, 1 more Banish and I would have had him ^^
We sat there discussing how much SE sucked for allowing such a travesty to happen (the WHM disconnecting during the Shadow Lord battle), and I remember I had reraise on.. Now, I'm pretty agitated at this point, so I reraise and kamikaze him basically >< Lol. So I single handidly ruined our chance at recovering when we got spat out ;_:

The moral of the story is, the Shadow Lord is incredibly easy, and SE is evil! Boycott FFXI until justice has been served!
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 23 2004 at 1:09 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Think about it. people go on saying you need high levels to kill it and stuff. thats bull. when the game first came out people forgot that the level cap was level 50. YES LEVEL 50. people farmed parties of level 50 and headed to beat the shadow lord. Yes this boss can be killed with a pt of level 50's.

Did this mission a few hours ago, our party was
70PLD/35WAR
56DRK/28WAR (me)
56BLM/28SMN (dlvled in battle tho :'(
54WHM/27BLM (also dlvled)
57DRG/28WHM
56WHM/28BLM

Warning: If you are a Tarutaru, prepare to die. Seriously, the Shadow Lord did more dmg to a Taru with an AoE TP atk, than the Taru had in HP. So,, yea.

The climb through Castle Zvahl was long, and hard fought, only one death INSIDE the castle, but we practically had to fight our way to the Throne Room. Once inside, you walk up to the Target named.....throne Room. It acts like a BC. As soon as we got inside, things went wrong....

We get him down to 1/4th or so health, and of coourse he puts on uber invinceble. Well, our BLM dies once half of that portion was done for. So, the pld, both whms, and I start using spells.....he eventually dies, and his Second Form appears.
He spammed AoE, we were prepared, after our other Taru died, we got the boss down to like 1/10th health, and my 2hr, and last resort go away.....as he cotinues to wear us down with AoE. Finally, i decide to kick in souleater, and he just.....dies.....

Once you finish it and get rank 6. Go to norg. No, i'm serious, go to Norg........turn your LS off, block out everything, and watch the 15 minutes of cutscene.......you will absolutely die.........from being overjoyed.

BTW, for the 3 of you out there who care, the music track that plays is called Awakening ;)

Personal experience: YOU MUST HAVE A BLACK MAGE.
Attempted this with
69 Pld/war
57 drk/war (me)
58 drk/war
57 rdm/blm
58 rdm/blm
57 whm/smn

First form: really easy, not hitting pld very hard, not too many AOE attacks, about 3/4 done, it does that invulernable to magic crap. At this point, both rdm and drks start casting magic, and woe to us, all our elemental skills sucked lol. It starts going insanely down hill, the AOE is slowly chipping us away, and the pld is running really low on hp so whm does some divine seal curaga 2 and later on a benediction, pulling alot of hate and getting killed eventually by an AOE, at this point the shadow lord has about 1/10 of his hp left and going down very very slowly, both drks out of mana, one rdm has to cure the pld, one rdm left nuking. Both rdm convert at this point. and we slowly chip him down, we raised the whm right before the first form dies (we are all around orange/red hp. second form, bam non stop aoes, whm goes down before even getting off a spell. Pld takes the shadow as far as possible, i bust out blood weapon (non soul eated as i was not gonna get any cures lol) this form goes down pretty fast, but in one aoe, the other drk and one rdm goes down. At about 3/4 hp left, my BW is losing to the AOE damage, and i get taken down, Pld manages to get off one last savage blade after some praying and we win with pld and rdm left alive, both under 100 hp lol.

Basically moral of the story is: bring a black mage, or maybe 2. The invulnerable to physical attack part can totally bog you down and ***** you over.
It can be done...

Believe it or not, with a well balanced, and i mean balanced, party of lvl 50 people, you CAN kill the shadow lord. He does not do a whole lot of damage. the only thing you have to worry about is the AoE stage, just make sure you have enough healing power during this stage as its only maybe 1 second inbetween attacks. But he goes down really quick this stage. Make sure to take some Yag drinks, elixers and you should be able to beat him.

Fist time I did it was like this:
54 PLD - me
50 RDM
50 BLM
50 WHM
56 DRK
55 SAM

The only reason we lost was because we did not realize how quick the AoE stage was, so RDM hit convert right as AoE began and died. We went back and whooped up on him.

A few weeks ago, I had started the PLD AF3 quest. Now, whenever I talk to Trion, he gives me the AF3 cutscene. After I talked to the guard to activate 5-2, he sends me to talk to Trion. When I talked to Trion again, he still gives me the PLD AF3 cutscene. Do I need to complete AF3 before I can start 5-2, or can I start 5-2?

Ihad this same problem. Make sure you talk to Halver FIRST before talking to Trion. Then enter Trions' room a couple of times. If he still talks about PLD AF, talk to halver again and go back to Trion. He will eventually give you the command to go kill the shadowlord

finally killed him last night with some friends:

61 DRK/WAR me
62 RDM/DRK Cassius
61 WHM/SMN Raithe
59 BLM/WHM Malfacto
55 THF/NIN Celara
(59 PLD/WAR)

so we headed to the castle and pretty much killed our way there (lotta fun + skillups) and took our time getting to him. Also a bit of excitement here as we were fighting a Demon, another added (no biggy) who cast sleepga right as he added and we took down the first demon. Then he started casting...for a long time. The whole PT was saying "oh no oh no.." and WHAM! Burst right on the THF (took him down to 17 HP while he frantically starts casting utsusemi). What we didint noticed was that an Evil Eye had also joined the party and WHAM! i get smacked by Quake. Luckily it wakes me, i sleep the evil eys, voke and engane/drain the demon and by then the WHM woke, curagaed and we went to town. But WOW was it close. The fun part was it was the first time the THF had gotten to see Quake and Burst ^_^

We got up to right b4 the throne room and medded up, buffed, ate food everything then all clicked on the door...

and thats where things went funny...

i got the message saying 6 memebers of my PT, including me, were clear to enter...cept the PLD couldnt get in (we found out later he didint accept the mission)

so the five of us walked in and the BLM was casting escape, we told him to stop. in the end we decided to give this a try. i would tank (my suggestion...i know i know). So i slapped on my heavy armour and started off with an absorb-VIT

lemme just say thank the lord our WHM had his smn sub and garuda blink. it saved my life.

13 min later we were done. no deaths, not even really close. I started the fight with blood weapon + souleater + guillotine with enough BW left to get my health back. after we beat him the first time, the blm manafonted and nuked him to ever loving hell while the whm and rdm somehow managed to keep us healed with <10% their mana (convert wasnt ready, long story)

so yea, PT of 5 including a 55 THF absolutely destroyed him. it was so much fun.

oh and once you beat him and get rank 6: GO TO NORG

i mean it. go there now. see the cutscene then huggle Squenix

Karg the Vile Sage, your maps helped us enourmously, however, the map with your "ghetto red circle" is misleading. On that map, there is no teleport where you indicated, you actually have to go to the hall at F-8 and go upstairs to a new map you don't have listed. There should be demons and eyes in this area, not quads. There is a teleporter in the middle of the new map, have your whole party get on it, and you teleport around until you find yourselves on the correct map, which is the last map you have listed.

Our party was:
56 PLD/WAR
56 WHM/BLM
56 BLM/RDM
55 BLM/WHM
54 RDM/BLM
56 THF/NIN

The first time we tried, we got eaten up. The WHM DCd and practially everyone was out of MP by the second form.

The second time we tried, we beat him just barely, both BLMs had manafonted and were nuking like crazy. By the time he had died, we all had 25-125 HPs left... one more AE attack would have ended us.

Some tips: For the first form, when you get him down to about 25% HPs, he will keep using some sort of Phalanx move making all physical damage useless. Don't dump all your MP on him however, you will need it for his second form. He also has an AE move in first form that none of us were able to escape. We tried to get out of the AE, but we got hit every time.

After you defeat him once, you will get a cut scene, and once the cut scene is over, you are all grouped together near the door and the Shadowlord starts running for you and starts using his AE move. He ONLY uses the AE move at this point, and it was hitting our party for 100-150 damage each time. It's basically a free for all, have your BLMs Manafont and dump on him until he dies while your WHM tries to keep people alive using Curaga. You have to kill him as quickly as possible (he has very few HPs in this form and doesn't resist black magic so nuke away), because your party can only take as many AEs as your WHM has MP left. ALSO: there is a lot of talk going around that he is IMMUNE to physical damage during his second form. THIS IS 100% UNTRUE. Our PLD was hitting him for around 20-30 dmg a shot, and our THF got a sneak attack off for 250 dmg. YOU CAN MELEE THE SHADOWLORD IN HIS SECOND FORM. It's the end of his first form where all melee is nullified by his phalanx move (that wears off eventually).

I cannot stress how important it is to dump all your MP on him in his second form. We were able to kill him in under 2 minutes in this form, maybe under 1 minute, and it was him or us by the time he died.

Good luck with this guy ^^ I have to say that I won't be helping anyone with him until I'm at *least* level 58. Level 55 it was waaaay too close for us, and I'm pretty sure we all 2hrd except for the THF.

Glad to help, but yeah when it came to that higher part of the map it more or less pushes you in one direction. It was getting up there for my group that was tough. I'll see if I can edit a better map for that top part.

we came in to this fight with 5 and almost had him. originally we had 6 people, whm rdm blm blm sam and pld, (there was a shortage of malee) as soon as we get to castle our sam dc'd and did not come back, we still decided to go on, once the battle began we did fairly well getting him down to about 1/9 health, and thats when trouble started to happen, our pld dc'd in the middle of fight, and me (rdm) was the only other person left capable of using my sword on him, since no war sub i coulndt woke and he satred picking off the mages 1 by 1. both blm were ko'd it was me and whm, well he got to us bouth as the whm run out of mp and as did i, then our pld reconected as we all were ko'd and suffered teh same fate as us, if it werent for this misfortune we would have had him with 5

We had in out party a level 62 whm a level 65 brd a level 62 sam a level 57 drg (me) a level 54 smn and a level 59 pld. We beat it with no problems, the battle took 12 minutes and a lot of that was the cutscene at the beginnning. I took about 20 screenshots... but then when I logged out to see them later in the night I discovered that when I let someone else play with my pc they had turned off fraps... so I ended up getting 0 screenshots >< and the ones I had taken were really nice too, I guess I will have to get a couple when I help my friends with it later.
