Summary

Find where the Goblins bury their junk.
Bring back eight of the same type of junk and Orlando will reward you well.

Walkthrough

Orlando is a collector. One man's junk is another's treasure. In this case, the junk dug up by Chocobos is treasure to Orlando.

Bring him a stack of 8 items for a reward as shown in the following chart:

All of these items are dug up by Chocobos (give the Chocobo a Gysahl Green to get him to dig). Some also drop off of random mobs. Remember to give them to him in stacks of 8.

Repeatable
# Aug 16 2009 at 7:13 PM Rating: Decent
K, there Isn't many times I contribute to this site but I can honestly say that for this one I can :D

This quest IS repeatable and can be repeated without zoning. Once you talk to him and trade the stack of 8 he pays you, then talk to him again and he will ask you again if you found anything. Once your done talking to him again trade another 8, and so on and so forth. I farm silver beastmen coins on my THF in Giddeus all the time and save everyone, then I come here on my mules and get easy Windy fame. (I don't know how much fame is per stack of 8 or how many stacks for each fame level, I just trade in a lot at once :D )
Repeatable?

So is there no thing to target, like "???" which i have seen several times, but were not entrances. I saw a "???" in front of the Crag-Mea, clicked on it, and nothing happened. Are these places to dig.

Also, I have found what is target as "Goblin's Footprint" all over Vanadiel in overlooked spots with the tab key. The one that is almost always there is just outside the gate leading from Windwurst Woods to E. Sara. Right when you clear the arch, take an immediate right, and its down along the wall a little, keep pressing tab. Another is right when you first enter the King's Tomb, take an immediate left, and hit tab. Nothing happens when you click on it. Anyone know what thise are for?

I'm can't remember what I did once(Smiley: boozing==>Smiley: chug-->Smiley: drunk-->Smiley: drool2},
but i did or said something or dug or something to the 'goblin's footprint' right outside E. Sara gate, and he popped up, talked to me a little, then disappeared back into the ground. He said something about leaving him alone and not telling anyone. Anyway, has anyone done this before and know how to do it again, or know what goblin footprints are for in the game. I'd like to know, so please tell.

And yes, I had a couple of brews, but I did not make up or exagerate any of this story.

Good Hunting.

I found the answer to one of my questions after doing a forum search on everything about "Goblin's Footprint", and I learned what it was I did to get the Goblin to pop up, and what he does. Target the footprint and then trade it any item at all, whether it be a piece of rock salt or your favorite sword. He then pops up and he will replay any cutscene whatsover that happened to you in that zone or region. Basically, he does the same thing as those free bards in town that replay cutscenes. And I'm almost 100% sure that the goblin does not keep what you trade him, so hes free too. This is the designers way of replaying cutscenes that happen outside cities and towns i guees.

However, I'm still not a hundred percent sure about the chocobo digging thing, where to dig to get stuff, if there is anything to target, to show that something is buried.

Take care.

Or better yet, trade it a single gil.

Actually Goblin Footprints and the ??? near crags are two very different things. the footprints will replay scenes from quests/missions done in the area. the ??? spawns a special Goblin Archeologist. Wont go into the details here but basically if you can get him to spawn he spawns at a lvl equal to the average lvl of your party in the zone. So be careful, Ive watched many a deaths to this guy ;) Only killed him once myself, and only seen him killed two other times. Drops were some gold beastcoins and a small chunk of gil (like ~3k). Also saw a thf Mug him for ~1200 gil.

As for digging there is no targets or anything like that, you jsut run around digging. However at times you will get an odd msg on your screen which relates to something, read about it here http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=24&mid=1103310098619404023&num=3

This is actually very easy to do, just REALLY slow. What you need to do is /follow a goblin digger around. You will see him stop from time to time, ignore that. What you want to watch for is when he whips out his Pickaxe and digs up a spot, then stomps it down. Cancel your autofollow immediately. You have to have the Chocobo's beak on that EXACT spot. Off by even a millemeter will give you the "You sense something in the area" message. If you hit the spot exactly you will get the item that he buried.

Typing this up, I have never actually tried digging in the same spot twice, but I doubt he plants more then one item... will have to try that tonight anyways:).

I can say that I have not leveled my chocobo digging by following him around, but I have only dug up 3 items from him (it took about 20 minutes and I got bored considering the little amount of gil you get unless you get the random lucky gold beastcoin).

So far I have seen a goblin digger in every area that a chocobo can visit... and only in areas that a choco can visit. It appears that the little Moogle/choco/goblin contest that happened last winter was atually a way to promote the chocobo digging, which, it really seems to have done (at least on Carbuncle). I would recommend (like every other choco-digger out there:) to go with about 10 stacks, follow the goblin digger, and just dig as you go. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to run back to a town or safe area if you are in a zone above your level.

Oh, and one final note: The area you dig in has a distinct level for digging. If you dig in an area above your level, you will consistantly fail (ussually alot more then in a lower area). I personally went through over 1k stacks of greens to find this out, only to go at lvl 2 to the dunes and La thiene to get items every third or forth dig... However, getting a a couple 3k or a single 10k item is not bad... slow, and not too practicle, but great if you are waiting for a party:).

One last quick side note on this, I would recommend subbing ranger until you get familiar with the digger that are you tracking, they can be a pain to locate since their pattern pretty much spans the maps.

Oh, and if you see someone tracking a digger on a chocobo, don't kill him, that's just rude... They don't drop anything spectacular, and they are on par with the other gobs in the zone (e.g. if you are in a lvl 5-10 zone, the digger will be lvl 5-10, if you are in a 20-30 zone, they will be around lvl 20-30). Just find a different gob and respect the diggers. It can take up to 15 mins for one to respawn, and they will respawn randomly on their path (as far as I have been able to tell).

I found a sack of fingernails in the Western Altepa Desert after following a Goblin Digger about 10 minutes. Maybe this quest increases your chocobo digging levels?

The best way i have found for this quest is just buy a stack of beastcoins at the AH-on my server they go for about 900-1k a stack. So by giving 8 of them up for 600 gil isnt a big loss at all for fame.

Better yet... Buy 2 stacks of beastcoins (if you can find them for 900 per), trade them all in (3 trades) and break even.

If you're a THF you can steal beastcoins of many gobs. Cheaper than buying.

Digging up the items
# May 10 2004 at 11:15 PM Rating: Excellent
Here is the scoop on how to get the items the way the quest inteds for you too, but again its more expensive than the reward.

First you rent a chocobo from any stables and ride it to a zone where goblin diggers spawn, it easier to find them if you have the widescan ability of ranger or beastmaster but you can run across them easily enough. Follow the goblin digger, it will eventually stop and jump up and down, this is where you should dig because the goblin has just burried something.

I have seen the goblin diggers do this five times two of them I was not on a chocobo and once I did not get to see him close up when I dug. The items that I have gotten were 1 goblin cup and one fishbones.

If you dig in the same spot again you will not find another item, I can not confirm if you will get the same item from another dig in the same area when the goblin buries something again.

You'd have to be mad for fame to do this quest. 1 chicken bone sells for 1,000 gil. Silver beastcoins are 400 each.

Since I am more interested in building my fame over my goldsmithing, I have not probs with giving this guy my Silver and standard beast coins. Especially since I have been working on my Tenshodo fame:). If you are farming Yagudo Bead necklaces, as a thf, you can get stacks of beastcoins (silver and normal). That is actually how I stumbled into this quest. I have already chewed through over 50 of the beast coins, and over 30 of the silver ones, so, it's not like I don't get ones to spare.

I find it if you can buy regular Beastcoins at 50-75g a piece you can actually make or break even on money when you turn in a stack of 8 to him. If you bought 8 Beastcoins at 50g a piece that's only 400g, the reward for 8 beastcoins is 600g. Some profit there. $_$

yep he says he only talks to able chocobo riders (makes since cause some of the items can only be dug up) but yeah you have to be level 20 before you can get the Chocobo liscense to ride a chocobo.
