Summary

Each week a different magical pattern appears inside a treasure chest somewhere. Give it to Guttrix and he'll reward you.

Walkthrough

UNDERSTANDING THIS QUEST

First of all, you will talk to Guttrix in Lower Jeuno. At any given time, only people of a certain race and gender can do this quest. When you speak to Guttrix he will tell you the current race/gender, and the area you must go to. For example, he may say that the current week is Male Hume, in Ordelle's Cave. This will change each Vana'diel week (8 real hours.)

FYI - Let's say you are Male Hume and it's your Vana'diel week. You have a key and are searching for a chest, but your time runs out (let's say it switches to Tarutaru Female) before you find one. When you open that chest, you will not get the magical pattern. However, if you open the chest during your race/gender's time and obtain the magical pattern, then you are safe. You can bring this pattern to Guttrix at any time and receive one of the pieces of your RSE.

Now, you need to go to the area and find a chest. There is only one chest at a time, and it will spawn randomly in one of several different spawning points. Once you open it with the proper key, it will respawn within 5 minutes or so at another random spawn point.

That brings us to the real meat of this quest:

  • Finding keys.
  • Finding the chest.

Note that you do not need this quest active to find a key. However, the keys (like all keys) are Rare Items - you can't carry more than one at a time.

Once you open the chest, you will receive a Magical Pattern. Again, this is Key Item - you can only carry one.

FYI - Yes, thieves can pick these chests and they will receive the pattern. Of course, you will still need to run back and forth to Jeuno each time you get one.

Bring this pattern to Guttrix, who will offer you your choice of the 4 RSE pieces. Repeat.

TIPS AND INFORMATION

The following information is copied directly from Anonymous's post. It's organized so well already, there was no point in reordering it, so I've dropped the whole thing right here in the hopes that more people will see it. I'm disappointed the poster was anonymous -- if this is you and you would like some credit, please let me know and I'll be happy to put your name up here.

Check out Shigun's post, 'Quest Information' for some very essential links. You should absolutely print out the treasure map (more later) for whichever dungeon you plan to visit. The online timer is also very useful in planning your excursion.

  • The quest is fame based. There are different theories on how Jeuno fame is calculated.. what I can tell you for *certain* is that attaining more fame in any other city will add to your fame in Jeuno in some way. The rough estimate of 40-50 total quests completed seems about right to me. Repeating a quest over and over again *does* count.
  • The goblin will tell you what magical pattern is available on any given week, and where it is. * The pattern will be in one of three dungeons, and can be found in a treasure chest. You need the maps available thanks to Shigun's post to reliably find the chest.
  • At any given time, only one chest exists within each dungeon. While its exact location is random, it will always be in one of 15-20 possible spots. See maps for this.
  • You need a key, unique to each dungeon, to open a chest in that dungeon. The key is a rare drop. You will hear a lot of information regarding which mobs drop the key. The truth is that almost any of the higher level mobs in each dungeon can drop the key. Some appear much more likely to drop than others.. but I have gotten keys off of mobs that "do not drop the key".. It REALLY pays to have a theif with you to help with key drops.
  • Unlike some keys.. this one must be traded with the Chest to open it. Once you open the chest, the key is gone, and you will need to find another one. Keys are RareEX..so you can only have one at any given time.
  • Once the chest has been opened, it will disappear. If it was opened by someone undergoing this quest, it will respawn in another location *immediately*.. there is little to no delay. However, if some unkind soul opens the chest purely for looting purposes, and is not there for Racial Gear.. it can take up to 30 minutes to respawn. So please be nice and do not open the chest unless it is your turn for Racial Gear.
  • If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, or do not have the quest active, and attempt to open the chest, you will not receive the magic pattern.
  • The magical pattern needed to get a piece of racial gear is a Key Item. This means, once you have gotten the pattern, you need to return to the goblin in Jeuno before you can get another. He will let you choose which of the four pieces you want.
  • At any given time, only one Race & Gender is elligible to receive Racial Gear. For instance, he may tell you Elvaan Male armor can be found at Ordelle's Caves. This means.. no one except for an Elvaan Male can receive the magical pattern. In other words.. there is NO FARMING. You can't get anybody else's armor. And you can only get each piece once. Once you have received all four pieces, the quest will end, and cannot be repeated.
  • This period of elligibility will last for one game week, or approximately 8 real hours. Unless you are experienced and very well prepared, you will have trouble getting four pieces in this amount of time. Once the week is up, you need to wait 7 game weeks before you can try again (generally about 2-3 real days). The quest will cycle through each race/gender in sequence. It helps to know the sequence, as well as the sequence of the eight days in a vandiel week. See the online clock in Shigun's post.
  • The three dungeons are not of comparable difficulty. One is significantly harder, and one is significantly easier. I do not want to completely spoil the quest for ppl who have done their homework.. but suffice it to say that some scouting/exploration/key hunting *before* your racial gear is available is highly recommended.
  • The time restriction of one game week applies only to finding a magical pattern. Once you have the pattern, however, it can be turned in at any time for a piece of armor. So, if you are pattern-hunting in a dungeon, keep trying until the very last minute.
  • American players tend to get very competitive, and maybe even a little rude ( /em recalls players refusing to give him a Raise) during this quest. This really isn't necessary guys! Everyone can get a piece of armor much faster if you play cooperatively. Just remember, as soon as one player opens a chest, a new chest will appear immediately, and that play will not be able to get another piece until they run back to Jeuno. So, be nice please!
  • A note on Racial Gear: generally speaking it will not have the best DEF of the armors available to you. It will have a lot of boosts to your stats. Whether these boosts help you are not depend on what you do for a living. The armor is designed to account for the weakness of each race. So, Tarutaru get huge boosts to HP, for instance, while Galka get huge boosts to MP, among other things. If you are playing a somewhat unorthodox character, or have a casting class as your subjob and need more MP, this armor can be very useful. If you are a tank, or pursuing a job your race is naturally well-suited for.. it may not be for you.
  • As for appearance.. it looks *exactly* like the starting, newbie armor you had when you first created your character, except that the colors will be all new. The ones I have seen all look nice to me, but what do I know?

I've opened the chest twice now at the correct place at the correct time but haven't gotten the pattern, and I believe the reason is this:

I have spoken with Guttrix, been told about the quest, and "Goblin Tailor" is in my quest log. However, I didn't speak with him during my actual time slot, immediatly before opening the chest. Instead, I've used the Vana'diel clocks to find out my place and time. This doesn't work.

Even if you technically have the quest and are in your correct treasure location at the correct time, if you haven't had Guttrix himself tell you where to go you will get the screwed when you pop the lid. Trust me, a Frost Shield, 2000 gil, and much rage are all I've gotten because of this 'little' detail.

I've personally done it without talking to the goblin during my week, and it worked fine. One chest I opened before 1:00 on firesday (begining of the week) and it's impossible to talk to the goblin and get to gusgen by then. You musta messed something else up...are you sure you looked at the right sex?

# Sep 06 2004 at 6:12 PM Rating: Decent
The Virtual Vana'diel Timer page appears to have been taken down by the person hosting it. I would like to know if it's at all possible that we find another site to host that page, as I and probalby many other people used it frequently. I have several sources that would probably be willing to host it for me. To the former host, please let me know if anything can be worked out. Thanks!

I did RSE as a thief. took me 3 deaths and 4 hours for one chest. I got the other three in 30 minutes. from the same room^.^

Tips for Thieves:
Use Living Keys, and have as much Dex+ equipment as possible. at 33 I was able to pick all 4 chests, with 5 keys. When you get your key item, get the DEX+ gear first, if you intend to go back and pick some more.

For Everyone:
1. Bring a Map.
2. Have a paper map in which you have marked out the spots where the chests spawn. (not totally necessary)
3. Bring means of Silence and Invis
4. Check rooms where multiple chests spawn first.
5. Get all the equip you'll need, the map, and scope out the area the day before.
6. If you are not lvl. 45+ aggro will be most deffinite.

IF you need the KEYS:
I heard of a method, where you get one key. put it in your Mog House, and then come back for another. You can only carry one of them on your person, but I am pretty certain you can keep multiple in your Mog. I have yet to test this theory, because I picked all my locks.

False... the chest keys are all Rare/Exclusive.

This means that you can have one of each at a given time - on your person, in mog house, or in storage. This is the case of all RA/EX items... Ex meaning it can't be traded or sold normally (sometimes to NPCs), RA meaning you can only have one at once.

For EX items without RA flag, you can have more than one, for instance you can have two or more Aspir Knives at the same time, etc.

I did all 4 of mine in one night along with a friend of mine (also a Mithra), and wea each got all 4 of our pieces in one night in Gusgen Mines. I am a THF, and I picked all my chests with Thief's Tools, and was successful on my first try with every chest. So I'd say Living Keys are completely unnecessary for this quest.

Another good timer is the MithraPride LS timer (at: http://www.mithrapride.org/vana_time/index.html)
-- use the pull-down menu to bring up other races under RSE.

(edit - yes, I somehow left out the 'h' in the URL even though I had it spelled right everywhere else. /cry) ^^;;

It helps if you spell it right:

There's an 'h' in mithra. ^^

This is a walk through for two of the dungeons that I've posted elsewhere, figured it might do some good here.

**reference site:
My reference site for all of my runs was mystery tour's map 1 page: http://mysterytour.web.infoseek.co.jp/ffxi/us/
These maps show both chest spawn locations and key droppers. There is also a timer linked from the page which is very useful.

Shakrimi I figured out on time when I only had an hour to find the chest but already had the key. Unfortunatly I didnt get a chest. But this is my recommened search route:
Enter from Taharongi and go to the lower lvl (second map) using the entrence at E-9. Then go back to the upper lvl at F-8. Go back down to the second lvl at H-8. Return to the upper level at J-9. On the upper level go north to J-6 and drop down, head east into the big room. The first chest point to check is at K-6. Go down into the second level at J-7. You will now have a long run of chest points to check, heading east. There are 5 chest points from I-7 -> F-6 here. Once you have checked them all you go south at G-8 and check to chest pawn point at G/H-9. Continue east and drop down, you are now set to check the other chest spawn area. Take the J-9 exit to the upper area again. This time head east and drop down at L-9. Check for the chest spawn in L/M-7, then head south and back to the lower level at L-9. There are 5 more chest points to check here, there are 2 rooms (one of which has the HNM argus spawn and where you will likely see many bot campers). There are 2 chest points in either room and one at the intersection. Once you've checked these 5 you will have passed every chest spawn point in Shakrimi. Hopefully you will have found a chest. If you do not, the only exit is out into Bubumaru (N-10).

Ordelles: Mystery tour has 4 maps here, of which I will be referring primarily to Map 1 (main level), Map 2 (upper level) and Map 3 (lower level). First are the directions to get to the area where the key dropers are. Take the entrence closest to the West Ron zone. You will enter at G-2 of the main level. Go east to the lower level at I-6. Follow the path till you get to a room with two exits and take the east exit at G-8. Head west and then south, going back to the main level at H-9. Head up the stairs. I like to check both rooms for the chest spawn points here, and once I've done that head to the east room with the cest spawn and drop down the hole. This puts you in the western big room in the lower level. As long as you stay on this ledge and the upper level (via I-11) almost everything you see is a key dropper. The exception are the sprouts and the bats. The bats will link, and tend to cluster. I also like to check the 4 chest points on this ledge before I go to the upper lvl and kill any of the key dropping monsters. There is one key at the upper level, in the big room at H-11. I believe this room is also the spawn point for the HNM that drops one of the three items for the brown belt quest. Once you get a key there are two options. I am assuming that you are starting from on the upper level, but if not its easy enough to modify the directions that follow.
Go to H-5 in the upper level to drop down to G-8 of the Main level (one way trip). There are four spawn points in this room (which is also for the 2nd part of the Pld quest). Three are the ones marked, and I also found a new one, just after the ledge you drop off, at G-9 of the main level. If you did the key huting you've already passed 7 spawn points and if the chest was not at any of those you have slightly better than even chances (4/7 remaining) that the chest is in this room. If it isnt, I'm sorry but you have a long walk to back track. Go back to the main entrence and head back to the key drop area. Check both of the drop down rooms, but this time drop into the hole in the west room. Check the three spwn points on this ledge. If you've followed from the start of this guide, then you have now checked every chest spawn point in Ordelles, and hopefully have a magic pattern.

Sandy should be fairly easy to get fame because of the rabbit hides. Anyone know easy ways for the other countries?

You need level 2 fame in Jeuno to start this mission. I highly recommend doing Only the Best quest in Selbina with a full inventory of produce. This is by far the easiest way to raise fame in San d'Oria as well as Bastok. Having high fame in 2 cities will jack your Jeuno fame through the roof. I actually attained max fame in Jeuno before my own home city of Windurst.

Anyone have a link to a timer they know works? I used the one at pyrogens (it says its version 3 though its displayed on v2.html) and it was wrong about the location. Mithra Pride has a timer on their site but it gives different information than the virtual vanadel timer linked at the top of this page. I've already gotten one Frost Shield, and believe me when I say one is enough. Any help or advice on how to figure out when a Hume Female should open the chest is much appreciated!

I'd like to reiterate the request for an accurate RSE timer!
All of the ones Ive seen have totally different times, and they have all been wrong. Couple days ago, time showed up as 4am-12pm, or 6pm-2am, turns out it started around 2am... The locations seem to be right though.
RANT- This quest is WAY too hard for the level group it's aimed towards and I have spent 6+ hours with high levels killing hundreds of mobs with no drops, if you can afford it, buy the stupid RSE.
Fame Builder

Great Fame Builder
This is for San D'orians only.

It seems i had 0 Fame before i started doing RSE quest, but here's a very good way to build it, which brought me to 3 Fame (San D'orian) and 2 Fame (Jeuno). Ok first thing, be in San D'oria, 2 buy as many stacks at Tanners Guild as possible, (I had 158 total) and go down to the NPC right next to the shop and give him all the hides and voila you should have at least same Fame i have, note: the minimum Fame for Jeuno to get this is FAME 2.

Enjoy ^.^

IM in diabolos and me and my buddy schlauch who is elvaan male decided we wanted all our RSE ASAP. IM 41 blm/20whm hume F. he is 45 thf/nin elf M. i went on darksday to check the week and it was hume M. obviously hume F pops next. so we head to ordelle's caus ei check the mithrapride vana-timer and it said ordelle's. ( btw much better than manakun.hari) so we are in there fighting everything we see and i have to go afk for about 2hrs. so i come back and look at the status bars. im chilling at 130 hp 512 mp and my thf has 42 hp. i come back intime to see him flee past me and notice the 15 bats hitting me
so i start running my *** off. we make it outside lol. i zoned back in and counted 30 bats lol. they agro rest apparently and i accidently left while resting. but he had found me a key. using teh handy treasure maps here i found a chest in no time. warped to jeuno got my pants and got tele-holla. next key drops on 5th mob. again find a chest easy warp and return. next key took 1 hr to get. but again chest was super easy to get. i found 3 of my 4 where u go for pld quest. so i got my pants boots and gloves and we go back in for my vest. we get the key on the 1st mob. i lot on it and start casting escape. my friend didn't pass ><! so we went back in and w/in 30 minutes we had the last key and the last pattern. i cast warp II on him and sent him to sandy. i told him he should grab some thf's tools for his tyhat was popping in a few hours in gusgen. so we went into the mines and waited for firesday for his to pop in gusgen. got skulls for noobs plowed for eco that sort of thing. lol all 18 died on puddings. they called for help and i was like riiiiiiight. anyway firesday rolls around i find a chest using those handy dandy maps and he picks it. boom pattern. warp II to sandy he chocos to jeuno and sets hp. gets dem and flee's to gusgen. im already on another chest waiting for him to get to me. he gets another pattern super easy again. we got all 4 of his in 1.5 hrs. most of the time spent was him running back and forth. w/ 2 lvl 41's u can easily take anything that drops keys. but just pay some thf to help u get drops. it is worth it =). good luck all

Well i have had this quest for a while but never decided to do it because i didnt think that the RSE could benefit my Elvaan MNK too much (i was very mistaken)...So today i decided to get my RSE, i looked up the on the vanadiel timer and saw that in about an hour it was gonna be my turn to get my RSE from Ordelle's Cave....So me a lvl 43MNK/20THF and a lvl 50 SAM went out to Ordelle's a little early so i could hopefully have a key by the time it was my turn...well in about an hour and a half i had a key and it only took 2 minutes to find a chest useing the treasure maps provided here so i got my magic pattern realized i mest up and forgot to set my HP in jueno and had to run back to jueno then tele holla an try again which i swear took longer than getting the key lol...so once i got back and had a scroll of instant warp and my hp in lower jueno it was a snap...i found each of the next 3 keys within 10-30 minutes of my arrival and found the chests pretty quickly on most of the times...The only time I didnt get my pattern immidiately after the key is because i let someone else who was doing the RSE have the chest i found...So all in all it took a total of 4 hours for me to get all the magic patterns and get a full set of RSE, well almost 5 hours if u count the time i spent escorting an alliance that was doing eco-war lol....this quest was not as hard as everyone says, either that or i was just really really lucky lol

Gusgen is by far the easiest of the areas. Ordelles is a nightmare with all the drops you have to go down in order to get a chest. I actually think Shakrami is easier than Ordelles but once you go to the lower level, you can't go back up.

If you guys think RSE is hard, just wait till Coffere key hunts. We went to Castle Otrozja for 5 hours and not one key drop. This is fighting IT's for lvl 58 party.

Yes, the quest is repeatable, sort of. There are four pieces of RSE gear (body, hands, legs, feet) so if you want the full set you HAVE to repeat it. When you give Guttrix the magical pattern, you choose which piece you get, so make sure you've scanned the gear first to get your preferred piece. If by repeatable are you asking if you can get more after you've gotten your complete set then the answer is no. I hope this info helps. Good luck.

Only AF is repeatable. They made AF repeatable I guess, because if you had multiple jobs past 50 it'd be hard to hold much AF or accidentally threw away your AF, you'd never be able to get it back.

RSE can be sold, if it was repeatable, the stuff would go for like 1000 gil instead of 20k+.

I was just wondering if this quest can actually be repeated. There was an update a while back where they said RSE would be able to be repeated. However i had gotten very mixed responces from ppl as to whether it can be repeated or not. And i hate the idea of selling if it can't be.

Just did this with my LS mate. Took us hours to get a key. He went, opened a chest, and got the pattern. While it was still the same in game week (about 15 minutes later), I opened a chest and got a frost shield. Fury doesn't describe my feelings right now.

Word of advice...don't forget to get the quest. :/
