Summary

Each week a different magical pattern appears inside a treasure chest somewhere. Give it to Guttrix and he'll reward you.

Walkthrough

UNDERSTANDING THIS QUEST

First of all, you will talk to Guttrix in Lower Jeuno. At any given time, only people of a certain race and gender can do this quest. When you speak to Guttrix he will tell you the current race/gender, and the area you must go to. For example, he may say that the current week is Male Hume, in Ordelle's Cave. This will change each Vana'diel week (8 real hours.)

FYI - Let's say you are Male Hume and it's your Vana'diel week. You have a key and are searching for a chest, but your time runs out (let's say it switches to Tarutaru Female) before you find one. When you open that chest, you will not get the magical pattern. However, if you open the chest during your race/gender's time and obtain the magical pattern, then you are safe. You can bring this pattern to Guttrix at any time and receive one of the pieces of your RSE.

Now, you need to go to the area and find a chest. There is only one chest at a time, and it will spawn randomly in one of several different spawning points. Once you open it with the proper key, it will respawn within 5 minutes or so at another random spawn point.

That brings us to the real meat of this quest:

  • Finding keys.
  • Finding the chest.

Note that you do not need this quest active to find a key. However, the keys (like all keys) are Rare Items - you can't carry more than one at a time.

Once you open the chest, you will receive a Magical Pattern. Again, this is Key Item - you can only carry one.

FYI - Yes, thieves can pick these chests and they will receive the pattern. Of course, you will still need to run back and forth to Jeuno each time you get one.

Bring this pattern to Guttrix, who will offer you your choice of the 4 RSE pieces. Repeat.

TIPS AND INFORMATION

The following information is copied directly from Anonymous's post. It's organized so well already, there was no point in reordering it, so I've dropped the whole thing right here in the hopes that more people will see it. I'm disappointed the poster was anonymous -- if this is you and you would like some credit, please let me know and I'll be happy to put your name up here.

Check out Shigun's post, 'Quest Information' for some very essential links. You should absolutely print out the treasure map (more later) for whichever dungeon you plan to visit. The online timer is also very useful in planning your excursion.

  • The quest is fame based. There are different theories on how Jeuno fame is calculated.. what I can tell you for *certain* is that attaining more fame in any other city will add to your fame in Jeuno in some way. The rough estimate of 40-50 total quests completed seems about right to me. Repeating a quest over and over again *does* count.
  • The goblin will tell you what magical pattern is available on any given week, and where it is. * The pattern will be in one of three dungeons, and can be found in a treasure chest. You need the maps available thanks to Shigun's post to reliably find the chest.
  • At any given time, only one chest exists within each dungeon. While its exact location is random, it will always be in one of 15-20 possible spots. See maps for this.
  • You need a key, unique to each dungeon, to open a chest in that dungeon. The key is a rare drop. You will hear a lot of information regarding which mobs drop the key. The truth is that almost any of the higher level mobs in each dungeon can drop the key. Some appear much more likely to drop than others.. but I have gotten keys off of mobs that "do not drop the key".. It REALLY pays to have a theif with you to help with key drops.
  • Unlike some keys.. this one must be traded with the Chest to open it. Once you open the chest, the key is gone, and you will need to find another one. Keys are RareEX..so you can only have one at any given time.
  • Once the chest has been opened, it will disappear. If it was opened by someone undergoing this quest, it will respawn in another location *immediately*.. there is little to no delay. However, if some unkind soul opens the chest purely for looting purposes, and is not there for Racial Gear.. it can take up to 30 minutes to respawn. So please be nice and do not open the chest unless it is your turn for Racial Gear.
  • If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, or do not have the quest active, and attempt to open the chest, you will not receive the magic pattern.
  • The magical pattern needed to get a piece of racial gear is a Key Item. This means, once you have gotten the pattern, you need to return to the goblin in Jeuno before you can get another. He will let you choose which of the four pieces you want.
  • At any given time, only one Race & Gender is elligible to receive Racial Gear. For instance, he may tell you Elvaan Male armor can be found at Ordelle's Caves. This means.. no one except for an Elvaan Male can receive the magical pattern. In other words.. there is NO FARMING. You can't get anybody else's armor. And you can only get each piece once. Once you have received all four pieces, the quest will end, and cannot be repeated.
  • This period of elligibility will last for one game week, or approximately 8 real hours. Unless you are experienced and very well prepared, you will have trouble getting four pieces in this amount of time. Once the week is up, you need to wait 7 game weeks before you can try again (generally about 2-3 real days). The quest will cycle through each race/gender in sequence. It helps to know the sequence, as well as the sequence of the eight days in a vandiel week. See the online clock in Shigun's post.
  • The three dungeons are not of comparable difficulty. One is significantly harder, and one is significantly easier. I do not want to completely spoil the quest for ppl who have done their homework.. but suffice it to say that some scouting/exploration/key hunting *before* your racial gear is available is highly recommended.
  • The time restriction of one game week applies only to finding a magical pattern. Once you have the pattern, however, it can be turned in at any time for a piece of armor. So, if you are pattern-hunting in a dungeon, keep trying until the very last minute.
  • American players tend to get very competitive, and maybe even a little rude ( /em recalls players refusing to give him a Raise) during this quest. This really isn't necessary guys! Everyone can get a piece of armor much faster if you play cooperatively. Just remember, as soon as one player opens a chest, a new chest will appear immediately, and that play will not be able to get another piece until they run back to Jeuno. So, be nice please!
  • A note on Racial Gear: generally speaking it will not have the best DEF of the armors available to you. It will have a lot of boosts to your stats. Whether these boosts help you are not depend on what you do for a living. The armor is designed to account for the weakness of each race. So, Tarutaru get huge boosts to HP, for instance, while Galka get huge boosts to MP, among other things. If you are playing a somewhat unorthodox character, or have a casting class as your subjob and need more MP, this armor can be very useful. If you are a tank, or pursuing a job your race is naturally well-suited for.. it may not be for you.
  • As for appearance.. it looks *exactly* like the starting, newbie armor you had when you first created your character, except that the colors will be all new. The ones I have seen all look nice to me, but what do I know?

There's no fame required for this quest? I keep getting "Scram, small fry" from Guttrix every time I talk to him for my Galka RSE. I checked my fame level in Jeuno and it's "vaguely familiar". I've gotten mixed answers from people I've asked about the amount of fame you need. Some say you need none, others say minimum. Does this message from the goblin mean something different? Thanks

As a quick reference concerning which MOBs will drop keys, any MOB that can theoretically have a level of 31 or higher can drop a key in these three areas. Looking up the respective area in the Beastiary here on Alla is a great way to check MOB levels.

Incidentally, if you are L40 (as I am currently) there's an even easier check. Anything that agros can drop a key at L40, andthing that doesn ot agro is not a high enough level. So far that simple test has worked out for me in the Maze and in the Caves. I am not positive about the Mines, but I suspect it is a similar set of circumstances.

I did this quest on Saturday. I'm Tarutaru, and it was in Maze of Shakhrami. The quest was given at 7:36 pm, but I only started around 9PM.

I got 3 friends to help me; a level 56 RDM, a lvl 51 RDM and a lvl 49 WHM.

The first item was hard to get.. they key just wouldn't drop, but after about an hour and half, I got a key. I got WARP II back to Jeuno, from a BLM that was hunting an NM there. I then made sure not to forget a Instant Warp Scroll. Got a Tele to Mea, and back in Maze, in less than 5 mins.

My second piece of gear, was found in no less than 10 mins. I got a key within 8 mins of getting there, and my friend had found a chest while I was Jeuno, which no one had claimed yet. I got the chest, and warped back to Jeuno.

2 items down, 2 to go.

Back in the Maze of Shakrami, the 3rd item seemed the toughest to find. I searched and search for at LEAST 3 hours; I lost count of time. I had the key within 30 mins, but finding the chest proved VERY difficult. At this point, 2 of the PT members had left, so it was just me and the lvl 55 RDM. He was in the bottom part of the Maze, near the exit to Buburimu Peninsula, so no way for him to come back on the top level unless he zoned and came back through Tahrongi Canyon. I was alone looking for the chest... as my friend was certain it wasn't on the lower level.

With the Treasure Map by my side, I must've gone around all Treasure Chest spawn points at least 10 times. I finally decided to ask the 2 party members that had left for assistance. As they arrived, I got aggroed, needless to say, I died, as no one was around to pull the mob off me, and considering that I got like 10 mobs on me, I doubt anyone would want to help me.

Anyways, the cleared the room, I died a few couple more times, and in the process, my teammates finally found the Chest. I was ecstatic, but still in a weakened state. I died.
I eventually got "Tractor'd right next to the chest. My teammates pulled the mob close to the chest, the raised me. I was quick enough to get to the chest, and warp outta there.

25 mins left til the end of the quest for the day. 3 items down, 1 to go. Will I make it?

I get Tele'd back to Mea, and as I arrive in Tahrongi Canyon, my teamates say "We got another key!. Hurry back!"

I run to the Cave around the Crag of Mea, and get there just in time to get the Key. I wander deep into the cave. And there it is.... my last chest.. grabbed it, with 5 mins left.

Let's just say, I was happy.
You can now see me strut in town with all my RSE gear.

Did all 4 pieces in 4 hours. Im level 50 pld and I would have to say Maze of Shakrami is the easiest, warp and tele are your friends in this quest. I did have to bribe a thf to not take the treasure once but thats all the trouble I had. I did find that Labyrinth Scorpion dropped the key at a better rate than anything. I would recommend going to the maze before the time starts and get familier to where the chests spawn (this will save tons of time) and also get a key before the time starts. By the way, im not using rse when partying with my pld, so dont start flaming about that.

Are you able to warp from 1 point to in a selcted point back to the home point in lets say Lower Jeuno? that would make it incrediblly easy for thf's. lol

This quest for Racial Spec Equipment is pretty easy. Just take time. Got mine in a day and less than the time limit for our race ( Hume ). I did my quest in Gusgen Mines and that place is creepy. I just get the Gusgen Mine's Key and find chest then Instant Warp back to homepoint (lower Jeuno), then i repeat. Easy!!

As a THF40/NIN20 on Valefor, I've had the best luck doing RSE in Ordelle's Caves. Getting keys is the hardest part, IMO, as the best drops come from Napalm, which are placeholders for a heavily camped NM, and therefore are surrounded by players with itchy Provoke fingers. Try beetles if you're lower level, or gobs if you feel comfortable killing 3rd tier beastmen. Or, since I think this post may be most helpful to THF/NIN, just bring tools.

Once you have a key, it's cake, especially for THF/NIN. I STRONGLY suggest scouting out the cave a bit until you know your way around, as it is on several levels and you need to fall down holes to get to certain areas. http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/Fr_Ordelle's_Caves.html

-I like to start at the top level (the level where you enter from the NW valley in La Theine) at G/H-12. This is the 4-room setup with holes to drop down to the lower level. Check for the two chests in the southern rooms at G-12 and H-12.
-Drop down the hole in the SW room to the platform below. Remember there are Stropers and 3rd-tier Gobs here, so if you're worried about aggro make sure you have at least Sneak on. If you're a THF and get aggro, it will most likely be from a Stroper. Just hit Flee and take off north until the Stroper stops following you (these pursue by sight apparently). Check the corners for chests, then head back upstairs to the 4-room setup.
-You can check for the two chests up here again, or just drop down the SE hole. Again, watch for aggro and check the corners for chests.
-There is a passage leading up directly from the this area. Take it until you come to the intersection at I-6 on the second level of the dungeon. Head south here and continue due south until you end up in a large room. There's only one chest here, in the center of the room near the back.
-Your last ditch effort is to head north from this room, past the tunnel you came up originally, and continue north until you drop down to the waterfall area on the first level of Ordelle's. Once you drop down, you have to go ALL the way back to the entrance before heading back to the 4-chamber setup I described above. For this reason, not many people check this room, which is good for you since there are 3 spawn points in the corners.

If you're not the running-around-type, I would just sit myself in the waterfall room on the first level at G-7. As I said before, this room is rarely checked and has 3 out of the 13 spawn points. Beetles are the highest level mobs here, so aggro isn't usually an issue.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Hello all,
I hit 30 as an Elvaan Red Mage (I wish I had mana), and now I'm a level 15 Beastmaster. I was wondering, if I attempt to get the keys by fighting monsters as a 30 RDM / 15 BST, will I be able to charm the key monsters? What difficulty can one consistently charm with a Beastmaster sub? Thanks,
RE: Beasmater?

nope
cuz the monster that u need to kill r so what @ lv. 40 or a little less.

and I think your BST sub can only charm easy or DC monster..... so... DC attacking VT monster? would that work? I don't think so... unless some1 can prove me wrong.......

I have finally finished all four of my pieces after all the frustration of running around in crapy hours of the morning, being disconnected as I see a chest, and dying when attempting a run without a whm. Why did I put up with it? Because this armour is perfect for my Drg/Whm combo, with the strength, HP, and MP bonuses. I would definitely not do this unless you need one or more pieces for your perferred job, or want to waste time running around just so you can sell the pieces.

When attempting these runs, I went as a Mithra Thf, but lacked the money for Thief's Tools (I am the poorest thf EVER ;_;). So I would usually go with my blm mithra buddy to get keys (with a rdm or whm from the ls) in Maze of Shakrami. Now this is where I got my first 3 pieces. It was usually easy to get a key here (except when my third try was complete failure with another thf with TH2...then she just gave me some tools), but finding a chest wasn't so easy. The Maze has areas in which you fall so you can't go back the way you came usually. When doing the quest here, I recommend going down to the "Leech Room" (K-10ish of second level) and keep checking on the chests in this area that are easily accessed (5 on this level, 1 when going up the ramp). The Leech Room was my friend's and my best bet. We would usually just sit in that room staring at the corners and a chest would pop, she would open it, then another one would pop 30 seconds later for me. In fact, I think I got all 3 pieces I did in this dungeon in the leech room. When trying for a key (and then getting thf's tools), I saw the chests pop in the 3 other spots I was near next to the Leech Room. So yeah... I recommend sticking to that area if you're not some high level or don't have your own access to sneak and invis. Oh, and do some shouts reminding people it's Mithra RSE (or whatever your race is), because the Maze seems to be everyone's favorite place to open the chests when its not their RSE day. And trust me, it sucks when you know for the next half hour, there will be no spawns >< (grr that taru...)

I didn't even bother with Ordelle Caves... I heard it was horrid.

Finally for my last piece, I went to Gusgen Mines. If you're a Thf and have access to Thf's tools, this place is your best friend. I decided to get one set of tools and a stack of Silent Oil (everything in there- except bombs- aggros to sound). Just going straight into the central room, you have access to a bunch of chest spawns. When your sneak is about to wear, just go up back to the steps and recast/reuse sneak. If you're not a thf, I don't know how easy it is to get a key, but it doesn't look like it'll be very easy. These rooms are so full of mobs ><

I ended up teaming with a whm (to use their sneak instead of my oil) who decided to run around this dungeon instead of staying in the room. I ended up losing my sneak in a bad spot and got aggroed by everything, it took me a while to die, but I had no idea how to get out since the doors were closed on me, and I had no map. So I just got another tele to Dem and told my party member I was just going to camp that room, while she and her high level rdm friend went around the rest of the mines. They opened a chest in some wing, and then one popped right next to me in the central room. I was so happy that I didn't realize my sneak had worn off after I opened the chest. I ended up having the whole room on my *** as I ran out of the dungeon (I forgot a warp scroll). It was all good- being a thf made me dodge most everything so I got out alive with lots of HP left.

And so you don't have to fish for a link for your RSE times, here's the site I used:

http://mithrapride.figarocastle.org/vana_time/index.html

Keep in note that on that site, the times listed for RSE are Pacific Time, just like in the game. The time it shows for "Current Time" on the top of the sceen goes by your computer clock, so don't get confused. GO BY PACIFIC TIME UNDER RSE.

Hope that helps some of the crazy people trying for RSE ^^ Good luck!

EDIT: aHA the link works now ^^

Yeah, the symbols come from the planets. Venus is the goddess of Love and Beauty, and the O+ symbol comes from a hand mirror. Mars, the god of war, has the symbol of o->, which is a shield in front of a spear. hope that helps a little with the background on the symbols. I love mythology ^^

I believe the Š is female, and the ‰ is male.
This was grabbed from a japanese site, and you don't have the Kanji font sets. I looked at a japanese site with AF sets, and the Š was in all the female pics, and the ‰ was in all the male pics, so I've come to the conclusion that that is what it is.

If your main is THF this is a cinch~ Last night worked with a 50+ ninja to get a key, took over 4 hours in Ordelle's Cave..

I returned with ninja sub for Tonko and a stack of Silent Oil.. Picked 3 locks and got my remaining RSE in a little under a hour and half.. Via Instant Warp back to Jeuno and Teleport-Holla's..

The key in Ordelle's is to zone in near Waterfall room ~ and then move to the otherside and check the remaining locations~Waterfall room is checked less often for chest spawns, though silent oil is a must to avoid any non-wanted aggro from Shriekers and various other things around the caves =)

Course this is only useful for THFs ^^;;

Not at all. When I was hunting for the Kazham Airpass keys, two (sometimes three) keys dropped for the same PT.

It was actually a little frustrating. We would spend 2-3 hours to get a key (I was the only one that needed it), and on our way out, the very next one would drop another key. Happened twice >.<!!!!

Yeah, I would rather shoot myself in the foot with a nailgun then do RSE in Shakhrami Maze again. I thought Ordelle's Cave was difficult until Shakhrami. Hopefully Gusgen will be easier. Good luck to all doing RSE.
Elvann RSE this weekend.

This weekend me "Choch" lvl 38 Rdm and my friend "Darru" lvl 37 Whm went to get his RSE gear this weekend. First place we went was to the Ordell Caves were we had a lvl 47 Pld help us. We got 2 key drops in the time limit. Both drops came from the Marlboro mobs in the caves. Then Yesterday his RSE Quest opened up agian and it was in Shakarami Maze "bad spelling" We spent the hole time limit trying to get a key drop. Finally with about 20 minutes left we got the drop from a gob pathfinder on the Buru Penn side. We luckly got a chest before the time ran out and now we are going to get the last piece for him on the 13th in the Gusgen Mines. Sorry not the best spelling.

RSE really worth it?

Lots of people in my LS have been going crazy over getting their RSE. I myself have a full set of Centaurian armor and I love it. The biggest perks for me as a Red Mage would be the incrase in HP and MP, however the rest of the increases don't seem really worth it to me. Also the Cent armor provides a better defense than RSE does. Now while a Red Mage doesn't gather much hate as it is, I'd rather not be hit harder than I should be.

The time and effort put into getting RSE doesn't really seem to be worrth the effort put in in relation to what stats RSE provide. Maybe it's because I spend most of my time farming for scrolls, but I just don't think it's worth the time.

Anyone else feel this way?

just did quest in maze of shakrami, with a 38 RDM (me), 52 SMN, 40 RDM, and 40 PLD. PLD and other RDM topside, me and SMN lower area (Bubu Side) Got key drops pretty quickly, but all chests were on the Tahrongi Canyon side of maze. =( Long run from Bubu side, with everyone that was looking for chests. Only 3 of the 4 of us were looking for Mithra RSE, and we each got one piece tonight....guess we'll be back next time for another piece.

Far as I knew, I had NO fame in Jeuno, so what I did was... got about 20-28 stacks of La Theine Cabbages, went to Selbina, traded them to that guy by the sheep. Use a scroll of instant warp to lower Jeuno, talk to Mendi (Across from Wag-Dee's Magic shop), then I talked to the RSE gob and Gobbie Bag gob, had enough fame to get both quests! So just saying... if you need fame for this, do what I did ^^

Not that expensive to get 20-28 stacks of Cabbages, I bought them all from Cook's Guild in Windurst Waters, soon as the shop opened, I cleared 'em ALL out. For every 5 cabbages you give that old guy, you get 100 gil, so getting enough fame for the quests ain't that expensive.
