Summary

Each week a different magical pattern appears inside a treasure chest somewhere. Give it to Guttrix and he'll reward you.

Walkthrough

UNDERSTANDING THIS QUEST

First of all, you will talk to Guttrix in Lower Jeuno. At any given time, only people of a certain race and gender can do this quest. When you speak to Guttrix he will tell you the current race/gender, and the area you must go to. For example, he may say that the current week is Male Hume, in Ordelle's Cave. This will change each Vana'diel week (8 real hours.)

FYI - Let's say you are Male Hume and it's your Vana'diel week. You have a key and are searching for a chest, but your time runs out (let's say it switches to Tarutaru Female) before you find one. When you open that chest, you will not get the magical pattern. However, if you open the chest during your race/gender's time and obtain the magical pattern, then you are safe. You can bring this pattern to Guttrix at any time and receive one of the pieces of your RSE.

Now, you need to go to the area and find a chest. There is only one chest at a time, and it will spawn randomly in one of several different spawning points. Once you open it with the proper key, it will respawn within 5 minutes or so at another random spawn point.

That brings us to the real meat of this quest:

  • Finding keys.
  • Finding the chest.

Note that you do not need this quest active to find a key. However, the keys (like all keys) are Rare Items - you can't carry more than one at a time.

Once you open the chest, you will receive a Magical Pattern. Again, this is Key Item - you can only carry one.

FYI - Yes, thieves can pick these chests and they will receive the pattern. Of course, you will still need to run back and forth to Jeuno each time you get one.

Bring this pattern to Guttrix, who will offer you your choice of the 4 RSE pieces. Repeat.

TIPS AND INFORMATION

The following information is copied directly from Anonymous's post. It's organized so well already, there was no point in reordering it, so I've dropped the whole thing right here in the hopes that more people will see it. I'm disappointed the poster was anonymous -- if this is you and you would like some credit, please let me know and I'll be happy to put your name up here.

Check out Shigun's post, 'Quest Information' for some very essential links. You should absolutely print out the treasure map (more later) for whichever dungeon you plan to visit. The online timer is also very useful in planning your excursion.

  • The quest is fame based. There are different theories on how Jeuno fame is calculated.. what I can tell you for *certain* is that attaining more fame in any other city will add to your fame in Jeuno in some way. The rough estimate of 40-50 total quests completed seems about right to me. Repeating a quest over and over again *does* count.
  • The goblin will tell you what magical pattern is available on any given week, and where it is. * The pattern will be in one of three dungeons, and can be found in a treasure chest. You need the maps available thanks to Shigun's post to reliably find the chest.
  • At any given time, only one chest exists within each dungeon. While its exact location is random, it will always be in one of 15-20 possible spots. See maps for this.
  • You need a key, unique to each dungeon, to open a chest in that dungeon. The key is a rare drop. You will hear a lot of information regarding which mobs drop the key. The truth is that almost any of the higher level mobs in each dungeon can drop the key. Some appear much more likely to drop than others.. but I have gotten keys off of mobs that "do not drop the key".. It REALLY pays to have a theif with you to help with key drops.
  • Unlike some keys.. this one must be traded with the Chest to open it. Once you open the chest, the key is gone, and you will need to find another one. Keys are RareEX..so you can only have one at any given time.
  • Once the chest has been opened, it will disappear. If it was opened by someone undergoing this quest, it will respawn in another location *immediately*.. there is little to no delay. However, if some unkind soul opens the chest purely for looting purposes, and is not there for Racial Gear.. it can take up to 30 minutes to respawn. So please be nice and do not open the chest unless it is your turn for Racial Gear.
  • If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, or do not have the quest active, and attempt to open the chest, you will not receive the magic pattern.
  • The magical pattern needed to get a piece of racial gear is a Key Item. This means, once you have gotten the pattern, you need to return to the goblin in Jeuno before you can get another. He will let you choose which of the four pieces you want.
  • At any given time, only one Race & Gender is elligible to receive Racial Gear. For instance, he may tell you Elvaan Male armor can be found at Ordelle's Caves. This means.. no one except for an Elvaan Male can receive the magical pattern. In other words.. there is NO FARMING. You can't get anybody else's armor. And you can only get each piece once. Once you have received all four pieces, the quest will end, and cannot be repeated.
  • This period of elligibility will last for one game week, or approximately 8 real hours. Unless you are experienced and very well prepared, you will have trouble getting four pieces in this amount of time. Once the week is up, you need to wait 7 game weeks before you can try again (generally about 2-3 real days). The quest will cycle through each race/gender in sequence. It helps to know the sequence, as well as the sequence of the eight days in a vandiel week. See the online clock in Shigun's post.
  • The three dungeons are not of comparable difficulty. One is significantly harder, and one is significantly easier. I do not want to completely spoil the quest for ppl who have done their homework.. but suffice it to say that some scouting/exploration/key hunting *before* your racial gear is available is highly recommended.
  • The time restriction of one game week applies only to finding a magical pattern. Once you have the pattern, however, it can be turned in at any time for a piece of armor. So, if you are pattern-hunting in a dungeon, keep trying until the very last minute.
  • American players tend to get very competitive, and maybe even a little rude ( /em recalls players refusing to give him a Raise) during this quest. This really isn't necessary guys! Everyone can get a piece of armor much faster if you play cooperatively. Just remember, as soon as one player opens a chest, a new chest will appear immediately, and that play will not be able to get another piece until they run back to Jeuno. So, be nice please!
  • A note on Racial Gear: generally speaking it will not have the best DEF of the armors available to you. It will have a lot of boosts to your stats. Whether these boosts help you are not depend on what you do for a living. The armor is designed to account for the weakness of each race. So, Tarutaru get huge boosts to HP, for instance, while Galka get huge boosts to MP, among other things. If you are playing a somewhat unorthodox character, or have a casting class as your subjob and need more MP, this armor can be very useful. If you are a tank, or pursuing a job your race is naturally well-suited for.. it may not be for you.
  • As for appearance.. it looks *exactly* like the starting, newbie armor you had when you first created your character, except that the colors will be all new. The ones I have seen all look nice to me, but what do I know?

Yes.

You can get keys at any time, it doesn't matter if it's your 'turn' at that particular dungeon. The important thing is opening the chests when it's your turn.

So if you're idle in the game and can go key hunting and have a THF friend helping you out, by all means go key hunting. Having it handy means you're halfway to your RSE (the other half, of course, is waiting for your turn at that particular dungeon).

At lvl 35 i did this quest with ninja as my subjob. Fame i got after about 30+ stacks of La Theine Cabbage for the "Only The Best!" Quest . Here is my experience on all 3 types of keys that thieves can use(Other jobs can take hours upon hours killing mobs for Keys). I believe Gusgen is the easiest to do (Plus i had the map from an easy quest at Bastok).

Thieves tools have a very low chance of working, and if you fail, not only will the chest dissipate, you will be severely cursed (75% reduction in health/mp).

Living Keys have a little better chance, but if you fail, a monster (usually in the level range of the monsters in the place where you are at), called Mimics, appear and will kill you.

Skeleton Keys, after some bad incidents with Living/Thieves tools, i decided to buy Skeleton keys, which cost about 3k per key. Skeleton keys are worth it, because not only do they have the highest rate of success, but the chest will not disappear and there is only a minor effect(Your status wlil disappear e.x. My Sneak disappeared whenever i failed) if you fail. I used about 10 keys to open the 4 chests at Gusgen, with the help of a whm who used Teleport-Dem and Warp II.

Although this is not confirmed, the % success that people say is that its your Dex divided by .8 (Skeleton Keys), 1.2 (Living Keys), 1.5 (Thief's tools).

My dex at that time was 48, so 60% chance with Skeleton, 40% with Living Keys, and 32% with Thief's tools, i think the Skeleton keys were well worth it, about 30k for my full RSE which costs about 200k total at Garuda Jeuno AH. (For some reason Female Hume and Elvaan RSE on Garuda are worth much more than Male/Mithra/Tarutaru RSE)

The entire quest took me about 50 minutes, Chests at Gusgen are very easy to find, Sneak is all you need, + High level miners, most of them Whms(For Teleport/Warp) can help you dearly if you are aggroed or need sneak. (Silent oils cost about 5k per stack on Garuda)

Okay, probably quite a newbish question, but is it possible to get the keys, or even the pattern, without the quest?

I.E. if I figure out when I should be hunting, I hit the correct area ahead of time, camp it until we get a key, find the chest, *then* find the pattern, and worry about picking up the quest in Jeuno later? Or can you not get the pattern w/out having the quest?

Yes, you can get the chest Keys at anytime. But you can only have one of each type since they are rare.
No, you can NOT get key item: Magical patterns without having activated the quest in Lower Jeuno.
Even if you open a chest in an area where it's your specific race/gender week in that area, without the quest active, you will get treasure/gold/trap, not the Key item.

Yes, this quest is all about fame, level has nothing to do with it. You will need the Jeuno fame of "you've become fairly known" -check with Mendi in Lower Jeuno.

I would like to add that doing this quest is extremely easy if you are a thief. For the simple reason that you don't have to kill the monsters for keys, you can pick the locks with just thief tools, which is what I did ^_^;

Here's my experience: I was a lvl 40 thief before I did this quest, you can do it much earlier, you just need sneak/invis so stuff doesn't aggro you. It was my week (elvaan female) in gusgen mines. I bought a stack of thief tools and a stack of silent oils, and found someone who will sell me a teleport-dem. Before I left, I set my homepoint in Lower Jeuno and also bought a Scroll of Instant warp from the Guard (If you have a subjob blm 17+ you can just warp and don't need this).

Got teleported to dem, ran into caves, used a silent oil, everything aggros sound (except for bombs, but they're easy to avoid ^_^) This is especially easy in gusgen mines because the treasure chests are kinda clustered together. As soon as I found a chest, I picked the lock, got Magical pattern, and then used scroll of instant warp to get out. Go to goblin's shop, get a piece of armor, equip it, then repeat the process. If you are doing RSE quest, the chests will respawn instantly at another location, unless someone loots it who isn't doing RSE >_<

I've got all 4 pieces in about 1 hours time. Used only 6 silent oils, and 4 theif tools (never failed to pick the locks for me).

I'm not really sure, but I think you can do this as a any level thief, since you only need to be able to use theif tools to open the chests. All you need to do is avoid aggro. If someone can confrim this, it would make this quest a lot simpler ^_^; hope this helped.

Around level 36-ish, as a white mage, I was in Gusgen with a level 31-ish white mage friend on the Teleport-Holla quest. About midway through, he accidentally aggro'd a wight which only checked as Easy Prey to me. Luckily we were both white mages and just Cure III'd it to death, and we got a treasure chest key!! He left me have it, since I wanted to do RSE ASAP. Since I didn't know what week it was, however, I just hung on to the key.

The next time my RSE rolled around, it was in Maze of Shakhrami. A full party of linkshellers (don't remember exact levels... all about the same, 36ish, including a thief) came along to assist me in getting a key. We were in one rather large room filled with key-droppers (Wights, Labyrinth Scorpians, Abyss Worms) and Elementals. This is a little hazy to me, but I know we started off fairly good. We were killing worms, as they were only level 27-30, but also killed a few Wights that aggro'd. (Wights are level 32-35.) Killing one at a time we would have no problem. But this room was FILLED with mobs.. which seemed to link from across the entire room. As we were taking on an elemental (33-36) and 3 or 4 aggro'd/linked Wights, we got a key drop from a Wight as soon as everyone in our party started dropping like flies. Luckily I was the last to die, after everyone else either passed on it or went to HP, so I got my key in the final seconds of life. I was quite upset at this whole ordeal, not only because all my linkshellers died for me, but because there were at least two higher level characters solo'ing in the room that didn't help us one bit.

I spawned back in Jeuno and headed to the Maze again. I was determined to find my chest. Using the map for the Maze which shows where the chests spawn, I found it fairly easy. End of RSE: Custom Pants.

The next time I attempted RSE was when it was my turn in Gusgen. This time I DIDN'T use a handy dandy treasure chest map, and just kind of wandered around aimlessly with sneak/invis. Found a chest in one of the rooms with three doors/levers, hidden in a corner. End of RSE: Custom Vest.

I haven't attempted the other two pieces yet, however while in Ordelle NM-camping, two other linkshellers and I (level 40s) killed mobs and found a key. We went and opened a chest, though, even though it was nobody's turn. >.< Later the two of them went back during Elvaan male week and got all 4 pieces in a gameweek's time. Although I was a higher level in Ordelle than I was in Gusgen and Shakhrami, it seemed to me like Ordelle would've been easier. I believe I'll go back there when my RSE hits to get my last two pieces.

And I did go back to Ordelle to get more of my RSE. I had gotten a key while in Ordelle.. "camping".. so I just went back during my time. A once-through and I found the chest in the last place I looked. End of RSE: Custom Gloves.

I logged out and went back a little later.. with about 35 minutes of RSE left. I killed Goliath Beetles and a few Gobbies with my whm46/thf15, however I couldn't get a drop in time. (I can solo anything there as my white mage, except NMs, Elementals, and Stroper Chyme.) As I was killing, I also wandered around and couldn't find the chest, either. All well, there's always another time for my boots. ^^

I forgot to say that when the wight killed me, I had levelled down. So the next solo fight I did with a wight was as a 43 whm.

Also I found Shakrami pretty easy to do, contrary to what most people say about it. If this is usually the hardest one due to the layout then I think I'll have a ball with the other two dungeons.

i've heard at lvl 45, everything in Shakrami will be not worthwhile. Not sure about the other places (have heard lvl 50 for gusgen).

I went to Shakrami as a lvl 44 whm with a lvl 43 friend. The wights and elementals and goblins were all 'easy' to me, everything else 'nw'. What was 'easy' to me was also 'easy' to my friend. So this is the different levels of 'easy'. Be careful of that. Solo against an easy elemental, she lost (we had separated to find the mobs better, otherwise Im sure we could have duoed the one elemental with healing)

Later I made a mistake and aggroed another elemental and wight at the same time. The wight pounding on me, and the elemental pounding on my warr friend after she provoked it, we both lost. After that I upgraded my whm armor to the lvl 40 holy armor and went back to the maze and was able to solo a wight without any worry (even had half MP at the time the wight aggroed me, i just meleed it to death to save MP for cures, which were not really needed)

So I think at lvl 45, you can walk around without aggro. That's not to say, you can beat the things here in solo unless you have good armor and weapon. As a whm, I'd say you can solo 1v1 just fine at lvl 44+ with that holy armor and maul-type weapon. But watch out for the elemental and links, that'll be the end of your soloing.

Now you might say, at lvl 44+ you wont want the RSE gear anymore. Well, that's true for some of the pieces, but I'm sure you can do it for gil or for another job.

Well you asked this awhile ago, so I'm guessing you probably don't need to know this anymore. However in case anyone else is wondering...

I've read that the order of "successfulness" of tools/keys to open chests is the following: Thieves Tools - Living Key - Skeleton Key, with Skeleton Key being the most successful. However nothing is foolproof, so beware! ^^

Wind nothing..hehe... .. soo i guess.. do a lot of quests in your hometown and do about 40-50 in other country.. and that should work.. well worked for me..

goodluck with that..

You don't have enough fame. Consult the Jeuno section on some other quests you might try in order to improve your fame.

If you're over level 30, you can always do the advanced job quests in Jeuno (BST and BRD) and the mog house quest to start out on your road fame.

No - you can only quest for your own RSE.

I recommend you guys to be in a party if you're from lvl 30-40 but from 40 and up, the monsters shouldn't aggro you. The dumb thing about this quest is that if you missed your time period, you'll have to wair like 2 or 3 days and you only have a 7 hour limit. Well 7 hours is plenty of time if you have an experienced party and a BLM that can cast Warp but if you have a crappy party, then you're screwed and have to wait 2 or 3 days...I helped my friend got all 4 pieces of his RSE in 6 hours (because he FREAKEN died too many times). Then he started telling people that I can do their RSE for them....AND I MADE MONEY!! YEAH!!

So how do u know what dungeon your magical pattern will be in? Lets say im a male taru and it is my week and time, Will it cycle thru all 3 dungeons? Or will it randomly pick one dungeon for that 7-8 hours only?
