Summary

Gantineux wants you to help him in his study of white magic. Go to the Eldieme Necropolis and offer up "spirit incense" at the dimly flickering candle to try and appease the spirits of the dead.

Walkthrough

Speak to Gantineux to begin the quest. If your fame is not at least level 4 (check with Zabirego-Hajigo in Timbre Timbers Tavern), then you will not receive this quest.

Gantineux wants you to help him in his study of white magic. He will give you the key item: Spirit Incense. You will need to head to the Eldieme Necropolis.

There are many entrances to the Eldieme Necropolis from Batallia Downs, but only 4 of them potentially lead to the ??? you need. One requires you to travel through the Ranguemont Pass and Beaucedine Glacier to get to the (F-5) entrance located on the upper section of Batallia Downs. The three other entrances are located at (G-7), (H-7), and (I-6).

Cast Sneak on yourself or use Silent Oil to avoid the undead. Bombs detect by sight but there shouldn't be any in the correct areas anyway. Head in until you see little candle stands in the tunnels. Tab around until you find the ???. It randomly spawns at one of the entrances and disappears after someone attempts to light the incense.

If you do not find the ??? simply try another location. Once you try to light it, the incense emits a putrid odor and you will be told the attempt has failed. This is normal. Go back to Gantineux and he will tell you he doesn't have anything for you but that if you speak to Eperdur in San d'Oria, he may have something for you. He is located in the chapel in Northern San d'Oria and will give you the Scroll: Teleport-Mea.

Spoilers

Offer & Acceptance

Gantineux: I am a friar of the San d'Oria Cathedral, come to Windurst as a part of a pilgrimage.
Gantineux: Now that my devotions at the Crag of Mea in the Tahrongi Canyon are complete, I have orders from the Cathedral to research the union between the magical arts of Windurst and the miracles born of faith.
Gantineux: I debated on how to best proceed, but finally settled on the field of putting troubled spirits to rest.
Gantineux: After hours of painstaking research, I was able to create an item that could be said to stand at the pinnacle of white magic!
Gantineux: Behold my creation! Please take this spirit incense and journey to the Eldieme Necropolis, a veritable city of restless souls.
Gantineux: In the Necropolis, you will find a brazier with a flame that wavers from time to time.
If you hold this spirit incense aloft in that place, it should bring the spirits into a state of tranquility. Please return and inform me of the outcome.
Gantineux: Why not go there myself, you ask? I am on a pilgrimage, and must not travel north of Jeuno.
Gantineux: Furthermore, I am but a simple scholar. It would be impossible for me to enter a place such as the Eldieme Necropolis.

??? Message

This flame seems to be burning a little brighter than the others.
The spirit incense emits a putrid odor and burns up. Your attempt this time has failed...

Return

Gantineux: Ah, you're back! And the result? Oh, I see... I was so sure it would work...
Gantineux: In any case, I must thank you for your assistance. I would like to reward you immediately, but I do not possess anything of value...
Please take this letter of introduction to Eperdur of the San d'Oria Cathedral.
Gantineux: May Paradise open its gates to you.

Finale

Eperdur: You saw Gantineux? Tell me, how does he fare? What is that? He's studying magic, you say?
Eperdur: He has always had a penchant for research, but he relies too much on his head for answers. He must revere Altana with body and soul!
Eperdur: I am sorry for any trouble he may have caused you. Please accept this as an apology.
Eperdur: May Paradise open its gates to you.

Well, I had my go at it with this quest. Went to Battalia downs, traveled into the G-7 entrance, and got my hiny smacked.

Sneak wore off next to the candle "Which didn't have a ??? next to it" and while recasting a doggy came over and smote me fairly quick.

Luckily, I had Reraise, and when the doggie was a safe~distance away, I raised and cast Sneak again. On my way out however, I had to pass a few more doggies, and I had forgotten that most undead aggro to low HP. And after a Reraise, my HP was very, very low.

So the moral of the story is....level up your enhancing skill and don't let Sneak wear off ><

There seems to also be a ??? candle point in the area where you go to get the Selbina Clay from Battalia Downs for the clay quests. I happened upon it when I was questing my last clay. I was kicking myself for not having the mea quest at this point, because getting into the Levithan gate can be a pain. Or is this a different ??? candle.

Yesterday i was getting fame in Windurst (i'm from Sandoria).

I was trading Bastore sardines to that damn taru. I've discovered something that i want to share with you all. :)

You have to zone to get the quest again. SO i first used the taru teleport near the fishing guild but i remebered that i can teleport myself too. I'm a whm lvl 36 with blm as sub. I founded a hp near the bastok consulate and i set my hp there. Did the quest then casted warp :D

Since warp is like zoning i could get the quest again ^^ I calculated that i had the time to give 3 sardines by the time a person that only zone close give 1 fish. So it goes 3 times faster....

Just thought i could share my trick with you all ^^ warp owns :D

EDIT: sry i didn't remember if anyone had thought about that thing before... it seems so. but anyway ^^my intention was good ;)

I would like to share my experience of getting the Teleport-Mea scroll, especially because I had no fame at all in Windy and I think this is the case of much people.

I started doing the Bastore Sardine quest. I bought 5 stacks at Bastok AH (in Asura it is much cheaper than at Windy's AH) and repeated the process 5 x 12 = 60 times. I took me less than 3 hours to get this done; I followed the idea given before (see below) of setting HP in Windy Port and used Warp to "zone" (actually you don't zone because you remain inside Windurst Port, but it works). I did *not* use any MP-refreshing item, just sat down and recovered normally whenever I was low on MP. This is good because you can do other real life stuff while your character recovers MP.

After that I visited the fame-check NPC at Windy Waters and I found out it had not been enough (*sic*). So I decided to do the following things:

1 - Did the Bastore Sardine 18 more times (that is, 1 and a half more stacks)

2 - Did the Chocobilious quest at Windy Woods (you get a nice profit doing that)

3 - Did the Paying Lip Service quest using 1 stack of Beehive Chips

4 - Did the Making Amends quest at Port Windy

After that my Fame was high enough and I could get the Tele-Mea quest. Note, therefore, that I did the sardine thing 6.5 stacks + beehive chips 1 stack + 2 non-repeatable quests. Maybe I have done some unnecessary things but anyway I am sure it was not much.

This is really the worst part of it: getting the necessary fame. The quest itself is very easy, as long as you follow the instructions already given in this forum. Just get a tele to Holla, get a choco, go to Batallia Downs, sneak yourself and go for it (and have faith that you will find your "???" inside one of the 3 more accessible entrances; it was my case ^^)

I just picked up my Teleport-Mea scroll, and I was very fortunate in that it was at the first entrance I tried. A few notes:

1. The entrance I used was actually on the border of H-8/H-7. You have to enter the barrow at H-8, and travel north a bit, and the entrance itself is H-7.

2. The candle was not flickering, but "Buring brighter" than the other candles. When the incense was used, it was consumed (as someone noted below), but the end result was the same. Warped back to Windy, got the letter of introduction for Eperdur, went to Sandy, and got my scroll.

For those doing this quest be prepared to bang your head against the wall. I searched for 3 hours at the easier entrances in batilla with no luck. Finally had a lvl 50 dragoon help me get through the glacier. Went into the entrance there to check for the ???? and it wasn't there <bangs head>. I am now camping outside the door waiting for it to spawn. Hopefully the other teleport-scrolls aren't as hard or I migh thow my ps2 out the window.

For those of you that found it relativily quick...be thankful...you don't realize just how lucky you are. ^^

Edit: Finally got it. Checked d-5 again and it wasn't there so i fugured what the heck i'll check the other ones again and go back through the glacier again if I have to. Went to the entrance @ G-7 and there is was. =)

Need a quick way to get fame? Don't we all and I wish I could help but this is the best I got. This is one way but not really quick, and anyone that's done it understands. So annoying but so great! The Bastore Sardine!

I suggest "Paying Lip Service"-3Beehive Chips and 2Remi Shells and "Creepy Crawlers"-3Crawlers Calcuii or whatever they're called and 3Silk Thread. This can be great for anyone who wants to make some bucks, because these are easily farmed off Crabs, bees and crawlers. But if you want to even buy it off the AH in Windhurst, usually, on a good day they sell for the same price as the reward gives you.
I wrote my story about this for the Tele-Yhoat quest message board if you want to know what I did.

As far as this quest goes: I went to H-7 => I-10 like mentioned below. I'm 39WHM/19RDM and I kept Sneak/Invisin' just incase. I also bought some Silent Oil and Prism too incase stuff aggro'd to magic. I tried alot of all the other entrances (spent a good hour walking around each of them with no maps), but the little "cave" at G-7 entrance is actually G-6 even though this forum says elswise. Underground where you actually ENTER the dungeon IS however G-7.

At the moment heading back to Windy for my Tele-Mea reward. 4 down, 2 to go.

i always enjoyed the Cornette quest lol and sulphur... beat the living CRAP out of Mandragoras and they drop very often lol and u get 200 for each cornette and 250 i think for yhutunga sulphurs so its not a bad lil pay off for the fame either *sometimes u can even buy cornettes at AH for 200 on good days*
Kudos to the questers

I just have to say kudos to you WHMs trying to get this scroll at lvl 36ish so you can use it. I'm a lvl 50 RNG, and was intending to get this scroll to sell to fund my arrows andd gear. After numerous trips to the various entrances to Eldieme, I have to say that I wouldn't even go there solo without a couple of stacks of Silent Oil and a prayer before entering. Lost Souls still con EP or DC to me, Gazers EP at least.

I'll be picking up some Silent Oil tomorrow to try to finish this quest, as the scroll currently sells for 70-80k on my server (compared to 8k for Tele-Holla). But for those of you hoping to do this quest to use this scroll, may your Sneak never fade and may the first candle you find be the one you need ;)

First of all.. The Glacier is a huge, annoying and hard to navigate through. I highly recomment buying a map [So that it shows your position], which you can quest for in San d'Oria.. and printing out the map that has a route [See http://www.621.org/nussrat/teleport-mea.php which muchmuchMUCH thanks to Vanex. I used this map to get through. ^^] Just know that you have to go DOWN slopes to get to Batalllia Downs. Going up any slope will lead you to Xarcabard or elsewhere.

HAVE SNEAK AND INVISIBLE! Everything aggros by either SOUND or SIGHT. Find somewhere safe and recast it whenever it begins to wear! I made the mistake of not recasting Sneak and got aggro from Bat Eyes and died. AND REFRAIN FROM GOING INTO THE TOWERS. There are monsters that will aggro you by magic, but only two types.. I believe it's Golems and the Statues.. And of course elementals. :] Stay far away from elementals.

I also highly recommend having Reraise and Warp, but if you're not a high enough white mage, and your black mage isn't high enough.. Spend the CP points. Trust me, these are handy. I've saved myself twice from just Warping out when something began to aggro me, and also lost less expirience because I could Raise myself. Don't expect to get a Raise from people, there really isn't too many people running through the glacier..

I went with a friend of mine who was a level 33whm/smn. I suppose it's fine to take someone with you as long as they can Sneak and Invisible themselves. ^^; And it's nice to have the support and ability to talk to someone with you. You spend a lot of time just recasting on you and your friend if they don't. And have a back up plan for emergancies if they aren't a high enough blm to warp, or teleport out. Ours was for me to do Teleport Holla while he casted a spirit to keep aggro.

I suppose having high levels to escort you through the glacier would also be a possibility. I saw some people running through without invisible or sneak. And when I say high level, I mean 50+, considering the highest mob there is is about level 44 or so.

ANYWAY. If the ??? doesn't spawn after you took the long route.. Wait [Or maybe ask someone in your LS to check the three enterances for you]. Don't let your trip be a waste. ^^; When my friend got there and there was no spawn, I warped back and checked the other three enterances. The ??? was there, and after I got mine, it spawned to my friend right after.

AND ALWAYS CHECK THE ENTERANCES BEFORE YOU TAKE THE LONG WAY [Especially if you're taking the trip alone]. We should have, but we didn't. It could have saved a lot of time, though.

It might also help to have your weather effects off. :] We were there with double ice, and it was a blizzard and TERRIBLE to see through.

Thank you for this link. I went into this quest with a map and some entrance points thinking I was ready. Needless to say I wasn't ready (I needed to check my pulse after this adventure to see if I was still alive). I ran back to the entrance cast sneak again and started looking deeper at the posts. I found this link, it was perfect. I found my candle in the third place I looked(I didn't have to go the long route).

I'm lvl 36whm (just hit 36 this weekend) without an xp buffer. I did all 3 teleports in 2 nights, without dying(this inculdes fame since I had 1 fame in all 3 locations). My suggestion on fame for this quest is having a friend in Bastok send you cornettes from the shop(you lose 60g per coronette but you don't have to zone between quests).

Tips for this quest?
1.The candles are VERY close to the entrance, so stick close.
2.Cast aquaveil on yourself just in case.
3.Don't panic, and be ready to warp if things get sticky.

Guh, I was in a hurry when I did the quest and didn't notice the original posts by Vanex (Thank you Vanex!)

Great maps! Question: on the second map (just right of the map of Batallia Downs), is the colored box indicative of where the candles will be?

And maybe I am reading this wrong, but will I need to get to Beaucedine Glacier for this quest...? I'm just confused because that map is on the same page; maybe it's totally unrelated.

Thanks for your very helpful maps!

Sorry for the confusion and the late response.

But here is your answer:
1) The colored box does indeed show where to find the candle. I can only confirm the one at I-7 which is where i found mine. But going by other posts the others should be correct as well.

2) The Eldieme Necropolis entrance at F-5 is at a higher elevation than the rest of the entrances. You must travel through the Beaucedine Glacier using the maps provided only to reach that entrance. I'll update the description on the page too.

Hope that helps

The hardest part about doing this quest was getting high enough fame to start it. I got the quest, followed the other advice here, ran in to the entrance in Batallia at H-7 and within 2 minutes of searching found my ???. I know this is very lucky of me as others have searched for days to find it but don't rule out the Batallia downs entrances when searching.

Just the facts on how I got the scroll.

Character: Hume F WHM L37 Bastok Rank 3
Bastok fame - just enough to get Dem scroll quest
Fame everywhere else - None, no quests at all

Getting the Windurst Fame
Talked to every NPC in Windurst and got about 15-17 quests. First I completed 11 of them, including the Hat quest twice (though no money for first one, but marked complete) and the crawler one next to the Dahmel farm twice. So 11 unique, plus 1-2 repeats. Checking my fame, I was still on level 1.

Then I did Something Fishy, trading bastore (?) sardines to Tokoma (?) in Port Windurst. 36 trades got me to Fame=3. Unfortunately, at 72 I was still at Fame=3. I believe that 84 was enough to get the quest, but I may have had to go to 96 (I bought stacks and checked fame between stacks).

Aside - doing the Something Fishy quest
The route I took was trade, run to teleporter, teleport to Walls, teleport back, and repeat. Clocked it at ~2:22 per trip, so got 25 or so trades an hour. So it took about 4 hours to get the fame (not including 11 uniques). Fish prices varied from 70-112gil (was told sometimes 45gil), got 70 gil back. Found that stacks @ Windurst AH were about 900-1000 gil on Valefor server, so if you want to repeat this quest, check AH first and don't overpay at the Fishing Guild next to Tokoma.

Got the quest, now what?
My understanding was that I had two choices - a deadly trip over Pass and Glacier to get to an easy way in to the Necropolis, or an easy trip to G/H/I-7 in Battalia Downs leading to a longer route into the Necropolis. I had no maps to any of them. The maps to Pass&Glacier would require fame in Sandoria to get Northern Realms/Regions map quest; after 4 hours of sardines that wasn't my cup of tea. So Battalia it was. Went to Lower Jeuno and got Eldieme Necropolis map across from AH. Also got a silent oil just in case. Then rode a chocobo out to the H-7 entrance. Immediately wished I had set HP in Jeuno...

The Search for the ???
Someone (who said they were bored at work) posted a great 2-pane multi-color map of where the entrances are and where the candles are. I used that plus my necropolis map. I can't find it above now, but I'll edit this if I find the link. Anyway, went to the candle, nothing. Realized I couldn't (safely? at all?) get to other sites via Necropolis, so had to brave Battalia on foot. Stoneskin/Blink/Reraise/Sneak/Invisible later, ran across to I-7 entrance (sneak+invis didn't last long, played peekaboo with orcs while trying to recast). Went in I-7 entrance, seemed a bit safer than the H-7 path, but nothing there either. Logged for the night.

Next day, home from work, rebuffed and went back to candle location, and my LS buddy says hurray he just found the ??? via G-7 entrance. I go up to I-7 candle and voila, the ??? had moved there. Drop Invis (mostly dogs around, no bombs which are only sight aggro), click the ???, asked if I want to use the spirit incense, said Yes, got message, and warped out immediately.

The Scroll
Warped back to Windy, got a letter from quest guy, teleported to Holla and rode chocobo to North Sandy. Ran to Cathedral, up the stairs, and was given the scroll.

Hope this helps somebody. Thanks everyone for your comments, wouldn't have braved it without them.

No Fame...Again

First off I'll talk about fame needed. Fame needed IS level 4 fame (see: FFXI Fame Guide).

Next, how to get this level of fame when you have none. One word: Cornettes! These things drop like crazy from the Mandragoras in Sarutabaruta. Take them to Yoran-Oran for the Mandragora-Mad Quest. Just make sure you have at least a THF15 with you and you'll have no trouble getting these. Take a friend too, you'll get bored :). Just follow the river up and down and kill all the Mandragoras you see. If you get bored of that you can usually steal some at the AH for 200 a pop (On Asura someone is always undercutting and ******** up our market...Go NA players!). I had to get upwards of 65 Cornettes to get level 4 fame (possibly more...I lost count).

NOTE: When you hit level 3 fame do the Aspir Quest and get any money you lost back (Aspir is 35,000 on Asura). With that profit you’ll probably just buy all the Cornettes in the AH to save some time.

Now doing the quest is not what I would call fun. I have taken all the info from these posts and added it to the Eldieme map from here (I got a bit bored at work and mad the map a bit better).
http://www.621.org/nussrat/teleport-mea.php
That should make your stay there as short as possible. The green boxes is where you want to look and the red dot is where I got mine. You are NOT looking for the larger stands, those are for a NM (so I am told). But the smaller lit ones. From what I've been told the ??? is always at the first small lit stand you see.

I don’t suggest going to the Beaucedine Glacier but just running to the other three. I took a PLD50 with me because he wanted the gil and we had no problem running around there are plenty of spots to recast Sneak. You will only need Sneak there the dogs and the Skeletons aggro by Sound only (So do the Shades so don’t be scared).

Just be smart about your Sneaks and you’ll be fine. Once you burn you stuff and it fails get back to Windurst and then head to San d'Oria and finish up your quest :)

It took me and the PLD about an hour to get to spawns of the ???. I hope it takes you less time :)

Once again I wrote this in a hurry so don't blame me if I type like a 4 year old :)

I spent almost three hours running around the first 3 entrances in Battalia - never found the flame.

Then I took the chance and went through the Glacier route - and there was the ??? and the flame on the first attempt. I wish I had tried this first, it's not that hard to get there using the maps provided by other posters on this page.

I can see how you were confused...but it's actually quite simple. Basically, the only way to get to The Eldieme Necropolis is through Batallia Downs and there are four different ways from Batallia Downs that will lead you into the Necropolis and to the ???s. One of them (the F-5 entrance) can only be reached by way of Ranguemont Pass -> Beaud. Glacier. Once you go through these entrances, just go to the locations that Valyana Scholar gave.

Key:
Batallia Down entrance to E. Necropolis => Location in E. Necropolis where ??? is

I-7 => M-6
H-7 => I-10
G-7 => I-7
F-5 => D-5

Hope this helps.

From what people have said, the correct list of locations, in the order I checked them, seems to be

I-7 => M-6
H-7 => I-10
G-7 => I-7
F-5 => D-5 (from glacier)

I personally found it in I-10, on the candle where the tunnel from the entrance meets the large room. This was on my second cycle; I bet you can guess how frustrated I was not to find it in the D-5 location after walking through the glacier.

I don't have the maps of the necropolis or glacier yet; the maps at

worked quite well for me.

well ????! ive done 29 quests in windy so far, and repeated several repeatable quests as well, and i cant get the ????ing fame i need for the bloody quest! i thought i was going to get it if i did one more quest (total of 30 unique quest) i would get it, but if you have 35 and still dont have it then i'm screwed! this is really pissing me off...been working on quests for weeks and stilld dont have enough fame. sandoria and bastok were so much easier to get fame up...but this is ridiculous...no wonder teleport-mea is worth so much (40k-50k on valefor server)

is it 35 quests you have completed seperately or have does your 35 completed quests include the repeated ones? the repeated quests usually have little effect on fame. I have 38 different quests completed and i have the quest right now

Completely untrue. Most of the time repeatable quests give less fame, but considering the only San quest I've done has been the tiger fang one, and I have now gotten the Shiva quest (which requires lvl 6 san fame) kinda proves my point.

Also, number of quests does not matter (well it does in a roundabout way). You have to have a certain level of fame to complete almost every quest (aside from subjob, adv job, artifact, etc). You can do 20 unique quests adn ahve the same fame as if you had done 40 repeatables. In this case, you must have lvl 4 windurst fame. The beginning of this guide explains how you know you have it. To raise wind fame, I recommend either buying a bunch of giant bird feathers for baren moren hatter (the expensive but fast way), or fishing up or buying many sardines and giving them 1 at a time to the guy in front of teh fishing guild in port wind.

Wide scan does not pick up things like ???'s or chests.
Tele Mea

This is just some clarifying info...

I am not sure which quest the "If you have a flint stone, you may be able to light this" are for. But those are not the Tele-Mea "Flickering Candle".

Those short, already lit pedestals are what you are looking for. These seem to line the pathways to the taller unlit ones. A ??? on one of the smaller LIT pedestals is your target if you are searching for the random ??? for Mea.
still confused

after I read through all the messages, I know how the quest is to find a candle in Necropolis. there are several spwan point for this candle in Necropolis. But Since there are several enterence to Necropolis in Battalia Down, why someone said u need to go
Batallia Down -> Beaucedine Glacier -> Ranguement Pass ?
the Candle in is Necropolis right?

That path is an alternate way of getting to Batallia Island and from there you can enter the Necropolis and check that entrance if you don't want to actually have to walk through most of the necropolis.

What exactly am I looking for besides a ???. Is it one of those little pedastals with the little flame burning on top? As I was doing the Warp II quest and already in Beaucidine I decided to take a trip to the F-5 Batallia bunker entrance into Eldieme.
I've been here since last night checking as often as possible... Can anyone explain exactly where the candle appears?

I just found the ???. It was one of those little pedastal things that you see in the cave like areas. The four locations that it spawns are I-7, I-10, D-5, and M-6. However I-7 can be on all 3 floors and I-10 can be on 2 floors. But I think they're only in the cave like areas rather than the brick walled dungeon type areas. I got mine at I-10.
where?

Is the ??? right near where you zone in? or do you have to travel deeper into the zone looking for it?
