Summary

Gantineux wants you to help him in his study of white magic. Go to the Eldieme Necropolis and offer up "spirit incense" at the dimly flickering candle to try and appease the spirits of the dead.

Walkthrough

Speak to Gantineux to begin the quest. If your fame is not at least level 4 (check with Zabirego-Hajigo in Timbre Timbers Tavern), then you will not receive this quest.

Gantineux wants you to help him in his study of white magic. He will give you the key item: Spirit Incense. You will need to head to the Eldieme Necropolis.

There are many entrances to the Eldieme Necropolis from Batallia Downs, but only 4 of them potentially lead to the ??? you need. One requires you to travel through the Ranguemont Pass and Beaucedine Glacier to get to the (F-5) entrance located on the upper section of Batallia Downs. The three other entrances are located at (G-7), (H-7), and (I-6).

Cast Sneak on yourself or use Silent Oil to avoid the undead. Bombs detect by sight but there shouldn't be any in the correct areas anyway. Head in until you see little candle stands in the tunnels. Tab around until you find the ???. It randomly spawns at one of the entrances and disappears after someone attempts to light the incense.

If you do not find the ??? simply try another location. Once you try to light it, the incense emits a putrid odor and you will be told the attempt has failed. This is normal. Go back to Gantineux and he will tell you he doesn't have anything for you but that if you speak to Eperdur in San d'Oria, he may have something for you. He is located in the chapel in Northern San d'Oria and will give you the Scroll: Teleport-Mea.

Spoilers

Offer & Acceptance

Gantineux: I am a friar of the San d'Oria Cathedral, come to Windurst as a part of a pilgrimage.
Gantineux: Now that my devotions at the Crag of Mea in the Tahrongi Canyon are complete, I have orders from the Cathedral to research the union between the magical arts of Windurst and the miracles born of faith.
Gantineux: I debated on how to best proceed, but finally settled on the field of putting troubled spirits to rest.
Gantineux: After hours of painstaking research, I was able to create an item that could be said to stand at the pinnacle of white magic!
Gantineux: Behold my creation! Please take this spirit incense and journey to the Eldieme Necropolis, a veritable city of restless souls.
Gantineux: In the Necropolis, you will find a brazier with a flame that wavers from time to time.
If you hold this spirit incense aloft in that place, it should bring the spirits into a state of tranquility. Please return and inform me of the outcome.
Gantineux: Why not go there myself, you ask? I am on a pilgrimage, and must not travel north of Jeuno.
Gantineux: Furthermore, I am but a simple scholar. It would be impossible for me to enter a place such as the Eldieme Necropolis.

??? Message

This flame seems to be burning a little brighter than the others.
The spirit incense emits a putrid odor and burns up. Your attempt this time has failed...

Return

Gantineux: Ah, you're back! And the result? Oh, I see... I was so sure it would work...
Gantineux: In any case, I must thank you for your assistance. I would like to reward you immediately, but I do not possess anything of value...
Please take this letter of introduction to Eperdur of the San d'Oria Cathedral.
Gantineux: May Paradise open its gates to you.

Finale

Eperdur: You saw Gantineux? Tell me, how does he fare? What is that? He's studying magic, you say?
Eperdur: He has always had a penchant for research, but he relies too much on his head for answers. He must revere Altana with body and soul!
Eperdur: I am sorry for any trouble he may have caused you. Please accept this as an apology.
Eperdur: May Paradise open its gates to you.

I set-out to do this this morining.
Took me 1h with all the travelling (had Warp with HP Windurst, and Tele-Holla + Chocos).

I went into every of the 3 easy ones, nothing.
I figured i'd stick in the I-6/7 One. Good thing I did. After 15-20 minutes of checking (in/out and redoing) the ??? spawned and it was it.

No need to go to the 4th one. It's best to stick into a "bunker" until it spawns.

GL all ^^

Do the Crawler Culler quest in Windurst Woods for quick fame and very little loss in gil. Trade 3 crawler calculus's(sic) to the NPC by the Dhamel Farm shack. For every 3 he recieves he gives you 600 gil in return and another notch in your Windurstian fame belt. The item is easy to farm and cheap to buy as most people don't know what to do with them in the first place. I promise this works great and it got me the quest with ease. The rest of the quest...ahh, we've heard enough horror stories here, it all worked out for me in the end. Good Luck and I hope this helps.

If you fish(the guild is in windy also), u can fish up bastore sardines and turn them in for 70 gil and some fame a pop(u gotta zone after each quest), cheap and effective.

Hi, this is just a note for those WHM/BLMs out there that did the Aspir quest in Windy, like I did. Since I already had worked on my fame for Aspir, getting enough fame to get the Tele-Mea took only 32 more coronettes. That was less than half an hour's worth of work.

Getting the scroll, however, is another story (one that's unfinished at this point. *sigh*).

Anyeay, good hunting,

I just did this quest and was lucky enough to find the ??? just inside the second entrance I tried. I used the above link which helped out a lot. I now have Tele-Mea and am working on getting the fame for Tele-Dem.
If the Spirit Incense Burns Up - You HAVE finished the Quest
# Oct 21 2004 at 4:08 PM Rating: Decent
I spent an inordinate amount of time to get this scroll - including more deaths than I can count and de-leveling (trying to get through Rang.Pass & Beau.Glacier with no map!!!) My bad...

BUT BUT BUT - I finally did get the scroll but I thought that I had failed the quest when I finally found the ???. Take note - if your incense burns up - you have NOT failed the quest. Return for your scroll!

When you find the ??? at one of the possible locations, another sequence of events that can take place is the you find the candle "burning brighter" than the others. You are then prompted to use the Spirit Incense. When you do, it says that the spirit incense burns up leaving a bad smell (something to that effect) and that "your attempt has failed." Do not despair when this happens! You HAVE completed the quest. Return to Windy for your letter from Gantineux and then off to Sandy for your scroll.

I thought that I had made a mistake when this happened but decided to return to Windy anyway - only to discover that I had indeed finished the quest. (thank god!) Hope this helps anyone else!

So I talked to Denisefox (above) about this mission and it took the poor dear ten deaths and quite an extensive amount of time to complete this quest. Well, what bugged me was the fame. Apparently Windurst doesn't listen to wierd sheep herders from Selbina about how nice my corn is! >< Anyway, 5 stacks of Basore Sardines and about 10-11 random quests my fame was ready. I got the quest and headed to Jeuno and the Eldieme Necro. I entered at around the I-6/7 area and wondered around for a bit with Sneak up. I whispered a loner inside; Heal, to assist in looking for it. Ten minutes later she whispers back ( ??? Sighted! And a bunch of *** characters. x.x) Anyway, I ran back up the stairs and out to Batallia Downs. I quickly figured out by the lay of the map I had for Eldieme that the entrance Heal was at was the H-7 area. So I made haste there with Invis up. (Stupid Tigers were Easy Prey, and can be very annoying for a WHM with Nomad armor. ><) I got to her, entered the Eldieme, a brief walk with Sneak up brought us to the candle. It burned brighter, woo, burnt out the insense, ooo, and that was it. It 'does' seem like you have to go and do it again because the exact words are "You failed your mission this time..." leaving you thinking; 'this time..? WTF!' No..you did it. Go back to goofy in Windurst and speak with him. His hours upon hours of creating a device that meets the pinnacle of white magic just 'went up in smoke'; pun intended. He sends you off to the rejects of Vana'diel; the San D'orians, and you get your scroll. Kiss off, kids, I'm off to make some tele-taxi muneh!!

I have had DNS problems for the last couple of weeks. They can't seem to figure it out and I'm too lazy to help them. So when it gets fixed the previous link (http://www.621.org/nussrat/teleport-mea.php) will work again.

I'm sorry for the trouble you're having.

PS> I watched one of my friend go to the first entrance he tried (G-7) and got his ??? took him about 20 minutes to do the whole quest.

I spent about 2 hours building up enough fame for this quest in Windurst. I traded 5 stacks of Bastore Sardines and also did about 6 misc. quests in the city. This was enough to get the Mea quest. After recieving the quest i traveled by Airship to Jeuno and out into Battalia Downs. Little did i know how easy this quest would be, 2nd entrance into the Necropolis, there it was, the ???. I immediately tried to light the inscence and it burned up!!! I then flew back to Windurst and talked to the NPC again, and had my HP set in San D'Oria. So i warped to Sandy and talked to the NPC there, BOOM!! Teleport-Mea for me!!! total time for quest including waiting for airships = 20 minutes!!! sold for 60k on Titan WELL WORTH THE TIME

ok
I went through the entrance from Batallia Downs at H-7
didn't even need the map. but oh well.
just cast sneak/invis on myself.
the guide says go in until candle stand things. it's actually a couple in. It was right at #3 for me.
There were monsters around, the dogs and the undead. I took invis off, kept sneak on
I touched the ??? and the incense didn't light, just as it says.
Then I used a scroll of instant warp and got back to jeuno.
Finishing up the quest now, but i'm very happy to have just saved 70k!!

Save yourself the pain of the sardine quest and get fame with Cornettes. Buy in Bastok at 251, sell at 200. I turned in 100. Fill up your mog safe/storage with as many as you can or use a friend/mule to avoid second trips to bastok for more cornettes. You could also turn in like 50 conrettes and then sardines to finish.

I just attempted this quest with my friend (56RDM) and I'm not sure if it worked. Within about 30 mins I caught aggro from a Tomb Hound (Not sure if that was the correct name). Wandered around for a while trying to get to D-5. On the way I found a candle stand and checked the ??? it said that the candle failed to ignite. I'm unsure whether that was supposed to happen or not. I'm writing this waiting for the Airship to arrive at Windy. Some advice for this quest--GET GOOD DIRECTIONS!!! And be prepared for death. Lots of death. Especially when you die once, and have to keep moving (can't stop for weakness to wear off in some places). Weakness wore off in a room full of death (the tomb skeletons) and since they aggro by sound as well as LOW HP I died again. This happened one more time before I and my friend decided to call it a night. We just assumed that we were supposed to go to the Beacedine Glacier entrance. Maybe we can try again later. Good luck to all of you trying this quest! You'll need it. :(

i just wanted to let everyone know my experience getting this scroll, took me 8 stacks of bastore sardines, and i found it at the second entrance i checked in battalia. despite several naysayers about which quest to get windy fame trust me, bastore sardines is the only quest you can break even on if you are on Odin server. i even made a little profit. i got all 3 tele quests done without dying and good, cause i didn't have a delvl buffer. and yes, the fame is the hard part, i was done with all the quests very quickly once the fame was done.

My2Gil on this quest

Yesterday i started to search the ??? but i was to lazy to go the long way trough the glacier. so i moved to the 3 entrances in G/H/I-7 and check all 3 for the ???. Nothing. I did this multible times for at least 2 hours and no ???. I decided to make a break and come back in a hour. But when i came back still no ???.

I was so bored of waiting that i choose the long walk now without map. Its very easy to take the long way with this link http://www.621.org/nussrat/teleport-mea.php , just cast Sneak/Invisible all the time and get through the glacier. BTW: ist a very nice walk and makes fun to see a new beautiful area. There are not much mobs so you are able to recast sn/in all the time without any problems. When i reached the entrance in F-5 ... still no ???.

So i decided to go to bed. This morning i just wanted to check it again befor i go for work and finaly it was there in F-5.

So my advice, when you don't find the ???, don't waste your time and camp it. Better check it another day.

ps: sorry for my bad english

I helped a friend go from Fame 1 to Fame 7 in an hour to get this quest by simply giving Yoran-Oran 90 Cornettes (buying them, getting the spaces to hold them all and trading them took up the majority of the time) I'm sure I didn't need that many cornettes but it worked...

Note: Bastok musy be ranked 1st or 2nd to be able to purchase the Cornettes, you lose roughly 56-60 gil per Cornette (Yoran gives u 200 gil per Cornette) but thats not that bad of a loss...

I (36 Whm)just finished this quest and at first I was rather intimidated. I had heard scary things about Eldieme but I took along my friend Morlie (33 Rdm)(he owed me for some power levelling I did for him) and we travelled in. I choose to use that wonderful guide with the maps that people were talking about and we entered the blue area first at (G-7).

My friend forgot to sneak himself and ended up with a wonderful lost soul aggro because he thought the lost soul looked like me! (Last time I checked I was a hume female not a skeleton, but honest mistake!). After zoning I made him stay outside, he didn't listen of course and I ran in to find the candle stand. I found it, and took off my invisible (which I didn't need) and touched it. It didn't work as it was supposed to and I ran out of Eldieme so fast! And now I can teleport to Mea! It sure was an interesting adventure to say the least.

I was lucky that I got it on my first try! ^^ Good luck to all the others doing this quest too.
I had to go the long way, and it was fun (with the map, snea

Let me say the guy who posted this http://www.621.org/nussrat/teleport-mea.php made what might have been a difficult quest very manageable.

I will say that the most tedious part of this quest was raising my fame. I only needed to raise it from 2 to 4 and that took a good while.

After logging the tele-mia quest, I went to batilla downs. I tried the 3 easy entrances first, and had no luck. I searched around in each, and went WAY past the first free standing torch to make sure i didn't miss the ???, or it wasnt deeper.

I decided that I didnt feel like fooling with the "long way" thru ranguemont pass, and beaucidine glacier, so i went to bed. Let someone else do that, right? Heh, thats what i thought, anyway.

The next day, after i got home from work, I logged back in, and checked the 3 easy entrances. Still no dice, so i checked them all again, and went all around the necropolis.

I decided to take the challenge and go for the difficult entrance. I ran from batilla to jeuno, hopped a flight to sandy, and went from E. Ronafue, to Rangeumont Pass. I followed the map at http://www.621.org/nussrat/teleport-mea.php . peice of cake (with sneak and invis).

Then on to Beaucedine Glacier. While it was stressful and exciting, It wasn't very dificult. Take note of the locations on the map where you drop down. Even if you dont posess the map of the area (i didn't) you can get your <pos> which will give you the general idea where to go to find the drop locations. (Actually, you dont drop like in other zones... maze of shikarmi, sea serpent grotto... here, they are ways to descend, like entering the canyons in La Thiene)

There are wide areas that have no mobs. You should look for safe places to re-sneak/invis, and keep in mind how to get there fast if need be. Like Qufim Island, Beaucedine is made up of open areas connected by narrow vallies. Most of the mobs are sabretooth tiger types, around level 36, with some gobs. The tigers there run thru the caverns about as fast as you walk, so its possible one will follow you for a while.

Once I negotiated the glacier (pretty place despite the peril), I entered the necropolis from F5, and the ??? was the very first free-standing torch that I found.

I completed all 3 of these tele-quests without dying -- actually without even being hit. The closet I came to dying was dying of boredom raisng fame. All it takes is a printed map sneak, and invis, and a safe place to re-cast them.
