10k Moat Carp
# Jun 11 2004 at 3:04 AM Rating: Decent
Ok so if i understand that quest u need 10k Moat carp to get the Lu Shang that is around 1.5M for sell at AH on my server.

I've just played and calculate something
10k / 12 ~ 800 (833 to be real)

800 * 3k = 2.4M (3k is the lower price i've seen at AH)

So why make the quest u will earn enough money to buy 1 rod ;).
OK this is rare to find one at AH.

By repeatable does this mean you can get the rod twice?

Anyone know what the title you get from this? And does it changed depending on which brother you pick to do the quest?

I've seen somebody with the title "Lu Shang the Legendary Fisher", and I'm assuming he got that title from this quest.

No.

Here are the titles that I know of that are associated with Lu Shang's Fishing Rod.

For completing this quest and getting the rod, you get an amusing Key Item and the title "Carp Diem."

For having Irmilant in Rabao fix your Broken Lu Shang's Fishing Rod for you (2 light crystals + ancient lumber) you receive the title "The Immortal Fisher Lu Shang"

While not directly linked to Lu Shang's rod, if you turn a Tictanicus into Zaldon (he lives at the fishing guild shop in Selbina) you gain the title "Lu Shang-like Fisher King"

Hi,

Silly question. I know reward wise if I turn in multiple moat carps at the same time I get 100 gil for each one. However fame wise do I get credit for them all?

Example I trade in a stack of 12 moat carp. I get 1200 gil. Do I also get 12 repeats of this quest or does that only count as 1 repeat?

Basically what I want to know is if I have to turn them in one at a time to maximize fame.

Thank you! :)
#REDACTED, Posted: Feb 26 2004 at 8:08 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You can't catch moat carps with sabiki rigs. I'm pretty sure insect balls are the only bait that works. Which is a waste of money cause you will lose most of your bait.
RE: About Bait
# Mar 21 2004 at 4:33 PM Rating: Decent
People really shouldn't post unless they actually know what they're talking about. You DO have to hand in 10,000 moat carps by yourself to get the rod.
RE: About Bait
# Feb 28 2004 at 12:49 AM Rating: Good
yes, you do have to turn in 10,000 yourself, not the 10,000th one. I've turned in the 10,000th one and got nothing, but the 100 gil per fish.
All the japanese sites say you have to turn in 10,000 yourself, which is why this is one of the most time consuming quests.
RE: About Bait
# Feb 27 2004 at 2:59 AM Rating: Default
you can use a rogue rig to catch them 3 at a time.
RE: About Bait
# Mar 21 2004 at 4:35 PM Rating: Default
No, a rogue rig does not catch 3 fish at a time. I've caught over 10 stacks of crayfish, and over 5 stacks of moat carps with the rogue rig, and not once did i catch more than one at a time.

I've caught many many many fish i'm level 38 apprentice, my downtime is 9 seconds..i started by fishing in the moat for moat carp till i was level 27 i didnt stop fishing till that level in the moat..you will level up all the way up into your 50's from fishing in the N. San Moat because of GOLD CARP thier level is plenty high to give you XP that way..its not the fastest way to level but it is a constant decent money...i Now fish outside Windurst and on the Boat for the larger fish..but i still get XP from the moat whenever i need to pick up some extra cash...the only thing i dont know is What the Rouge Rig is for...once i find that out i'll be set..If you have an extreme amount of patience then i say go for the rod..but if not..wait till your higher level and yank the fish out 1 after another..

I can vouch for this... you DO have to turn in 10k on your own. I just turned in enuf fish to push it over 10k on Cerberus, and all I got was the reward mney, no rod...

The big irony was i bought back all those moats I used to get money over the last 2-3 weeks...sigh...

When does it end
# Jan 14 2004 at 3:46 PM Rating: Default
I was just wondering when this quest ends? And by ends i mean taken to my completed quests sheet. My server has like 300k turned in, which means only about 20 people have turned in 10,000. A little confused?

is there anyplace to buy bait in this area or do i need to craft it or buy from AH
#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 25 2004 at 3:46 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) yeah if you go to the items shop in south san doria then you can buy 12 worms for 48G... not only is this PERFECT bait for this quest (i use it, along with a bamboo rod and cach 1 carp every 3 go's) but this is exactly 152G cheaper than in the AH... you can if your cunning like me buy loads of stacks and then sell them on to the AH for a profit of five times!!! you can also do this with arrowood from the capenter, and that has an increse in the AH of TEN TIMES... am i good or am i good. as you can see i'm rich because i'm evil/clever... join me on my beliefs!!

oops, anyways, someone posted that a level 80 alchemist can repair it, what is the crafting formula for that? and does the rouge rig work or not? someone told me that the rouge rig is the only rig that works for moat carp, but noone else seems to know anything about it? It could be the easiest thing to use to catch that many moat carp, i dont have 8-10k to spend to find out guessing at it though.
RE: rouge rig and repair

Little Worms and Insect balls can catch Moat Carp as well.

As far as the Rogue Rig is concerned, it can get them as many as 3 per pull, BUT the Rogue Rig won't be very useful till around 50+ fishing skill as it is a high end Lure.

Mine didn't start being effective till about 45 or so fishing skill. Hope that helps

A nice Japanese fisherman on Gilgamesh provided the following information:

- Hand in 10,000 moat carps to Gallijaux or Joulet, receive Lu Shang's Fishing Rod and a testimonial.

- Recommended fishing rods: Mithran Fishing Rod or Composite Fishing Rod. Both are strong fishing rods made for catching large fish that can withstand the occasional rusty item (ie, Rusty Leggings). Tiny fish such as crayfish cannot be caught with a rod made for catching large fish.

- Recommended fishing equipment:

Body: Angler's Tunica (Lvl.15, DEF 12, Fishing Skill +1), Fisherman's Tunica (Lvl.15, DEF 2, Fishing Skill +1)

Hands: Angler's Gloves (Lvl.15, DEF 3, Fishing Skill +1), Fisherman's Gloves (Lvl.15, DEF 1, Fishing Skill +1)

Feet: Angler's Boots (Lvl.15, DEF 3, Fishing Skill +1), Fisherman's Boots (Lvl.1, DEF 1, Fishing Skill +1)

Legs: Angler's Hose (Lvl.15, DEF 8, Fishing Skill +1), Fisherman's Hose (Lvl.15, DEF 1, Fishing Skill +1)

- Recommended bait: Balls of Insect Paste. To make the bait, minimum cooking skill of 22+ with image support (from an NPC in the cooking guild) and 24+ without image support, recommended cooking skill of 28+ for low synthesis failure rate.

Insect Paste Synthesis Formula

1x Earth Crystal
1x Little Worm
1x Millioncorn
1x Distilled Water

If you cannot afford to purchase the recommended bait from an auction house or the fishermen's guild, then a Little Worm may be substituted.

- Recommended fishing spots: freshwater in Windurst Walls, Windurst Waters and Windurst Woods; the spring in Rabao; Knightwell's Lake in West Ronfaure; the moat in North San d'Oria.

- Recommended fishing skill: 60 (or 56 + 4 skill enhancement equipment). Very few lost catches. When Lu Shang's Fishing Rod is finally received, fishing skill of 60 is high enough to begin catching the legendary fish.

- Moat carp skill cap of 11. This means a fisherman can raise his or her fishing skill to 11 by catching moat carps only.

- Ufanne, an NPC standing behind the rival brothers, keeps track of how many moat carp have been handed in.

- The average quest completion time is 3 months, fishing 6 or more hours per day.

- Completion of this quest is a significant boost to fame in San d'Oria.

- To make gil, high level fishermen catch Black Soles in Qufim and Batallia Downs. The bait is a sinking minnow. Minimum fishing skill of 60, recommended fishing skill of 80. Fishing shop value of 1500-2000 gil each.

- Legendary fish are more for bragging rights among fishermen than making gil.

- Fishing skill of 60+ to catch legendary fish.

- Lu Shang's Fishing Rod can easily be broken by legendary fish.

- Woodworking skill of 70+ to repair Lu Shang's Fishing Rod. The simple synthesis formula is 1x Light Crystal and 1x Broken Lu Shang's Fishing Rod.

- Cooking skill of 30+ to make the bait, meatballs, for catching legendary fish.

Meatball Synthesis Formula

1x Water Crystal
1x Hare Meat
1x San d'Oria Flour
1x Distilled Water

- While fishing for legendary fish on the Mhaura <-> Selbina ferry, keep sneak refreshed or risk death by the tentacles of a level 60-62 notorious monster: the dreaded Sea Horror.

- Sea Zombie, a legendary fish, can only be caught during a pirate attack.

- Ryugunotsukai is the most sought after legendary fish.

- Be a proud owner of Lu Shang's Fishing Rod! Less than 1% of a server's population have the rod in their possession.

Edit: Added more confirmed fishing spots.

Updated Information About the Recent Version Update (3/2)

Several features concerning the chance of item loss during item synthesis were tweaked on the version up that occurred on 2004/2/26.
The chance of some items being lost was lowered, while that of others was raised.

Some items that had a zero probability of being destroyed were also affected. However, the "Broken Lu Shang's Fishing Rod" and others were not changed.

I have zero fishing skill & was wondering if it's possible to fish w/ all 4 pieces of fishing equipment & catch moat carps in Windhurst. As in what's the minimum level for catching moat carps.

What rod should I start with & eventually shoot for to catch moat carps?

Also where is the best <pos> in Windhurst to catch moat carps?

Thanks guys, and I hope everyone gets there LS rod =)

RE: Cast time decrease
# Apr 20 2004 at 12:04 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, the casting time does decrease. The original casting time for someone starting out with a fishing level of 0 is 13sec. for every recast. Every time your skill goes up 0.1 your cast time decreases by 0.01. So about every 10 levels of fishing experience gained, your recast time goes down by about 1 second.

Last night i bought a Taru Fishing rod and spent 2 house fishing next to the brothers. It didn't break and i was realing in things like i never had before. Awhile back i had turned in 1 fish, and got 100 gil and thought the quest was over. Till the other day when my friend told me you get a sweet rod if you turn in 10,000 fish. So i went back to the guy and talked to him and it said he had 4328, but i only gave him one. I watched him for a moment and saw him reel in a fish, talked to him again and he said he now has 4329 fish. I'm not sure if it's you and him working to get 10,000fish or if it is Him and the entire server. i am going to try and figuar that out tonight wait to see if someone turns in a fish and see if it counts. I'll keep you all updated!

If you talk to him, it's based on how many fish have been handed to him on entire server + how many he, himself has caught.

If you talk to Ufanne behind the brothers, she tells you how many YOU have handed him.

Unknown to me if its based on Ufannes number, or Gallijaux's number.

Insect Paste ball will get you more moat carp, but they are more expensive. I recomend Little Worms.
Advice from a skill lvl 25 fisherman
# Dec 11 2003 at 7:20 AM Rating: Excellent
Firstly Carps will break most rods. If youre going to fish for them just use bamboo/little worms. Sell about 2-3 sets of them at the AH to buy a composite rod. This rod is a great all purpose rod only places ive heard/read reports of it breaking is on mhuara/selbina boat.

After you have composite rod you can go right to turning in carps. However a Mithran rod is better for it; but more expensive. The bite rate with a mithran on carps is more because of the rods sensitivity. I do not suggest using this rod in most salt water areas, because salt water generally means Large fish. Altho the mithran rod says large fish it doesnt handle the weight well.

If youre intent on skilling up fishing save what you can to get the 4 pieces of Fishermans clothing. It dramatically helps with the learning curve.

Insect balls are a WASTE unless you have high skill and deep pockets. 3-4 gil per little worm or 20-30gil per insect ball.... Only difference is you dont get any other bites but carps. In my opinion I'd rather get a bite from a crayfish than nothing at all. Makes things a little more exciting. If your skill is below 6 you want the crayfish to bite anyway for skill gains.

I suggest city fishing for most people unless you're high enough lvl to solo the area you are in with ease(outside of East and West sarutabaruta). Windurst port is prime for 0-10 skill. Bamboo/sabiki is great there in 15+ rl hours fishing there only had 1 line break but more than made up for the cost of the rig. You can repeat the quest for the bastore sardine turn in that gives you 70gil by zoning to windurst waters and coming back for nice fame increase and money. Altho it can be a little long and boring.

RE: Advice from a skill lvl 25 fisherman
# Dec 11 2003 at 1:35 PM Rating: Decent
The mithran rod can break at Knightswell Lake in West Ronfaure it can also break in Port Windurst.

Fishing in the city is a no-no especially in North and Port Sandoria as there is rusty subligars that can break Fastwater Fish. rods and below. As also, there are Tricolored carps there that will interfere with Moat Carps if you are using Insect Balls.

And crayfishes can take up to level 7 skill-wise and moat carps can take you up to level 11. Indeed bamboo rods + little worms is the best setup to go fishing at low levels. It is cost-efficient and the output is very high. Stacks of Moat Carps on Pandemonium go for 4k and stacks of crayfishes goes for 600-1000g in the AH.

Fishing in city with mithran and you will be safe. The reason folks recomend mithran is because it can handle the rusty items.
