the rod
# Nov 22 2005 at 11:25 PM Rating: Decent
Well I started on this quest with my mule, 1 stack in less than thirty minutes ... how sad. Stupid Tricolor carp were a bother... but, I plan to get this rod by sometime next year >.> to sell of course cause probably by that time I'll manage level 50 XD {I'm talking way into next year too}
Whats the point?
# Oct 27 2005 at 7:32 PM Rating: Decent
Ok moat carp goes for 7k on shiva server. Multiply that by the 833 stacks required for the 10k moat carp, comes to a little bit over 5 million. Lu Shang's Rod sells for aproximately 5 million. Why do this quest, unless your an avid fisher, if your just gonna sell the rod anyway, when you can make more selling the carp on AH? I like money now rather than money later. I'm sorry IMO this quest is useless unless you plan to have fishing as your main craft.

Ever think that SE made this quest so the person doing it would actually use the rod?
RE: Whats the point?
# Nov 04 2005 at 10:34 AM Rating: Default
Notice I said, "Unless you intend on making fishing your main craft," its useless. Personally at low levels like I am, fishing is profitable to just sell the moat carp as soon as you get them, 14-21k in 30 minutes is very good at low levels.

I could be wrong about this. However I'm pretty sure I'm right. The fishing skill is compleatly sepreat from all other skills even though its in the 'skills' list. I do not think that its levels effect any of the other crafts. If someone can prove me right or wrong I'd like to know, please leave a reply...

So is this quest repeatable?
RE: Repeatable?
# Dec 29 2005 at 1:01 PM Rating: Decent
No, this quest is not repeatable. You can only do it once per character. Aka, if you turn in another 10k moat carps (for 20k total) you still won't get another rod.

Rabao is pretty good for Moat Carp. Insect paste! Occasional sandfish - 4k stack. AH is close as well as Nomad moogle.

Oh and better music.
Not really worth it.

A stack of moat carp on Siren is 4-5k.
10000 * 5000 = 5 million
5000000 - 50000(from 10G earnings for each fish) = 4500000
The rod sells for 4 million. Not only is there not enough moat carp in the auction house, it will take months to fish enough carp if you play a reasonable ammount.
RE: Not really worth it.
# Aug 31 2005 at 2:23 PM Rating: Decent
I understand what you're trying to do, and I appreciate the effort. That begin said, You're math is wanting.

If stack of 12 Moat Carp sells for 5k.
and you need 10,000 Moat Carp, then the math goes something like this:

10000(Moat Carp)/12 = 833 (Discounting the .33)
833 * 5000 = 4165000 (gil)
4165000 - 50000 (Gil reward per fish) = 4115000

IMHO Still only worth it to fishermen/women who are looking to go after big game. If ur looking to make gil quick this is not for you.

Did they make it so the person by the fishers doesn't tell you how many you've turned in anymore? I'm sending all my carps to my elvan who has no fame exept that from this quest so could it be that you need a certain ammount of fame for her to tell you? Also my elvan's fishing is 0 so could that be it?

10 gil per fish isnt too bad since it cost way less than 100 gil to make a stack of insect paste.

cook 55 and i make insect paste always when i fish

with the price of crystals (which has gone down) these days I'd say it takes about 120 to 133 gil per stack (unless you're lucky and you find some corn for cheeper than normal and stock up)

and annother thing is if you say you can make a profit by faming crystals it's not really profit because you could just sell the ingredients unless you're lvling the craft.

1. Buy a fast water rod

2. If you are a cook make your own insect paste

3. go to port sandy with 8 open slots (more the better)

4. Fish

5. Pray that you have an emulator to keep you busy...

6. after about an hour, or as much as you can stand, you should have a few good stacks of moat carp, tricolored carp, and a few holy gold carp.

And that's how i got to 350 in 3 hours...and pretty much got my money back for the bait i made.

I assume this post is based on a strategy you used prior to the fishing updates several months ago?

1) Hume Rod is less likely to break than fastwater.

2) This is the only way to go, saves tons of money on bait costs. If you garden your own corn it helps a lot too.

3) Unless you want all the junk fish in Port sandy Knightswell in West Ron. is much better, with insect paste all you'll catch is moat carp.

4) ok

5) I personally could not play another game while trying to fish with the new update, but i can still watch TV.

6) 350 fish in 3 hours is not possible under the new system. First, the most you can catch of moat carp in one day is ~200, and then you get fatigue. Other fish types allow less per day so 350 a day is not even feasable. That being said, fatigue is reset at midnight Japan time, so, if u fished through that you could do it, but not in 3 hours. That's almost 2 fish per minute with no losses.

Anyway, I just don't want people to get the wrong idea about how long this quest takes. This is a very time consuming quest, but is well worth it if you are serious about fishing. good luck to all who try.

Edit: Well i guess you get rated down on this site for sound advice. I'm not saying the OP's advice won't work, but with a 200 fish per day limit, I personally chose to stick with somewhere I would catch moat carp only.

If you mean this quest is not repeatable in the sense that you want to get ANOTHER Lu Shang's, then you are right, if not you can repeat it for 10k moat carps up until you get Lu Shang's.

Just thought a little clarification is good for those who have not started on this quest.

The Competition

Here's a math problem for you:
I just started this quest and am fishing for moat carp using little worms. I know I get a bunch of crayfish and tricolored carp, and who knows what else, but here's what I figure...
I used four stacks of insect paste and got the following:
25 moat carp (10gil each from quest)
18 tricolored carp (53 each gil from NPC)
Insect paste costs about 700gil a stack on unicorn, so if I do this enough to get 10000 moat carp, I'll have lost 78,400gil. (I'll let you check my math.) Not bad for the Lu Shang's rod, but here's another thought...
I used four stacks of little worms (36 gil a stack NPC in San d'Oria) and got the following:
18 moat carp
8 tricolored carp
1 gold carp (6k a stack in AH)
17 crayfish (1k a stack in AH)
I turned in the moat carp for the quest, sold the tricolored carp to an NPC, and am selling the others in the AH. Now, you can check my math on this, but if you use enough little worms to get 10000 moat carp, you will have made a profit of roughly 1,200,000 gil (not to mention the long sought-after Lu Shang's rod). It might take a little more time, but that's a huge profit! Plus, I get a lot of reading and junk done while fishing, so I'm not completely wasting my time. Good luck!

Fishing was my first guild when i started playing because it was soo cheap. I stumbled upon this quest when i was around fishing lvl 10. I first thought it was very conveint that you are able to catch the carp in the port and buy little worms from a NCP in south sandy, but tricolored and gold carp where lvling me up and weren't selling fast enough in AH. I ended up with a lvl 56 fishing and gave up on the quest around 3000 carp. A year after farming, (and a update making V.Emp's drop Rare/Ex) I came back to fishing and decided to get Lu's rod. I heard rumors about Knightswell being such a good spot, i thought i would try it out.

ITo test the spot i first went with 6 stacks of insect paste and 6 stacks of little worms with a Fastwater rod.

Out of my little worms stacks i got:
1.3 stack of caryfish
4.4 stacks of carp

Out of my insect paste stacks i got:
5.9 carp

I don't know about windy or any other places, but Knightswell in W. Ronfaure seems to be a great spot. I'm sort of loyal to it now since i don't have toworry about 2 other kinds of fish with insect paste. Plus your close to Sandy and (useing either bait) your major percentage of fish is moat carp.

Monsters don't seem to show up much during a full moon, other times you may get one or two.

If you want to decrease other catches I suggest a Hume rod or a Comp. rod.

Hope this is of some help to you fellow fisherman.

Truly,
Mithra praying for patience.

Of course, if you use little worms instead, you take a LOT longer to get that 10k carp.

Really, the best way to do this is probably doing whatever gives you the most money/hour, and just buy the carp from the AH.

You can't do that. No lures fish moat or forest carps efficiently.

Also: DON'T FISH IN SANDY!!!!

Sandy has those damn tricolored carps, and they love to bite and bite and bite. What a waste of time and bait.

To me, this was the best place:

Area: Windurst Woods by the fountain.
Rod: Hume rod (cancel all rusty items, they can break it!).
Bait: little worm*, insect paste.

* Important: little worm rocked for me in Windy. I was level 58 though. I got at least 9-10 moat carps from every stack. Also, you are right by the fishing guild, so you can get bait and fishing support easily.
The lower your level, the more crayfish will bite. Test it out and choose your bait. I guarantee the rod and location combo though.^^

Weird alternative:
Area: Yuhtunga Jungle waterfall, by SSG entrance.
Rod: Hume Rod (again, cancel all items!).
Bait: little worm, insect paste.

This will catch moat and forest carp. At level 58 I caught more forest carp though. The quest accepts both but reeling forest carp takes longer than reeling moat carp. While still interesting, I wouldn't use this for my main carp supply. It's fun after spending 5 days in windy non stop though. Pretty pretty waterfall. =P

the way i look at it is this... on Seraph server a stack of moat carps is 4k. 10,000 carps is 833 stacks.

IF i were to sell the 833 stacks in AH i would make 3,332,000 g.

If i turned it all in for Lu shang's Rod then sold the rod for 5,000,000 gil in AH then i just made an extra 1,668,000 gil. i dont see a reason to keep the Lu rod unless you intend on being a career fisherman. But if you just plan on making gil fishing up carps in bastok markets then the Carbon rod is just as good for only 2k !

and i only fish in my free time while waiting for PTs so its like flyer miles adding up for Lu's rod which will net me 5 million gil in the end !

SO i'm going for the Rod, then selling that badboy ! i also make my own insect paste... capitalism at its best !
Not that long....
# May 03 2005 at 4:51 PM Rating: Default
Ok i figured out how long it wold take, If you are good, which takes very little practice, you can catch about 1 a min which = 5 stack an hour. If you fish 5 hours a day, it will take 33 days... Now not every one can catch 60 a min, so on average, if u fish 5 hours a day, about a month and a half it will take, but also not everyone can spare 5 hours a day to play a game....

You can check the number of fish you have turned in at the Elvaan lady NPC that stands behind the 2 fishermen. She doesn't always tell you the first time you talk to her, though. If not, simply talk to her a few more times and she will tell you. The number the actual fisherman tells you is the number of fish that have been turned in to them on that RL day (I think. I'm not actually sure when the count restarts, but it does reflect the number of fish that have been turned in to them. Try trading one moat carp to your fisherman NPC with nobody else around and watch the count rise by one.). Also, with the recent major update, they made it so that you can hand in not only moat carps, but forest carps as well. Finally, they changed the amount of gil you recieve for each carp from 100 to 10 gil. I find this disappointing, as 100 gil per fish was a decent profit and trading carps to the brothers was bringing me (ever so slowly) toward my Lu Shang Rod. Now, it's pretty much all or nothing. You're either trading the carps to them in hopes of getting your Lu Shang Rod, or you're selling them to the AH for profit. No more best of both worlds...
Sigh
# Mar 11 2005 at 5:26 PM Rating: Decent
Ive been doing this quest for quite some time now, ive fished up a good 3-4000 moat carp and him giving me 100g per stack wasent bad. Now i get 10 gil and it is negative profit with the paste and all so i had to stop. I dont understand why they lowered the total cost. Because it costs a good 500g (unicorn Server) to get a stack of Paste. N now you get 120g per stack of moat carp so its lame. I never wanted to go buy the fish so i fished em up. Now im just loosing money constantly doing this quest so idk if im going to forfill to get hte rod or save money and try to buy one off some one (as if someone would ever sell it ^_^) lol ya right. PEACE

i bid all 800k i had on me at the time, just on the off hope. no luck.

so yes, people are finishing the quest and putting the rods up. probably for 4 million gil or something.

if the rod isn't incentive enough, the wonderful key item you get should be.

The brothers don't give you an accurate number of fish that you've turned in. Like many fisherman, they like to boast (aka lie) about their catches. Talk to the girl watching the brothers and she will tell you that they often lose count. Talk to her repeatedly and she will tell you the correct number of carp you've turned in. (A much sadder number in most instances)

Ok i just started this little quest after the last patch...I handed over 4 stacks on my first trip back from windurst waters (previously the one brother i decided to help said he had 794 moat carp...without me even trading over any), so before i handed him any carp, it shot up to 890 odd carp, then i added mine on top and took it up a bit more, 1000 or so. now i logged out, 12 hours later i decided to do a bit of moat carp fishing, and decided to check if it went up again this time 1956 carp, i was like wtf!!!, anyways, what im wondering is does he need my help getting to 10 000 or 10 000 on my own??? because i just keep hearing 10000 so w/e it maybe, im fricking confused =/. any clue?

sounds more like you're bitter you didn't get the raise you wanted, than having an actual gripe with botters.

not getting a raise is sometimes a fact of life. you should have home point in qufim or jeuno anyways. so you lose 5 minutes of time having to run back, big whoop. you lose the same or more waiting for illness to wear off.

Amen to that. I have started to realize that people in this game are (1) lazy; (2) rude; (3) mostly kids...so 1&2 don't really account for very much.

TBroo is right on. I have a few friends that are WHms or PLDs and they constantly get hounded for raises, PL, etc. If everyone who needs raises or PL so much need one that often then maybe this game isn't for you. Or go out and find friends that will help you out. 90% of the time my friends get harrassed it's because of some boneheaded maneuver anyways, so yeah, you deserve to die (aka training gobs into selbina zone, undead in quifim, or gobbie in the Kahzam area. Most of my LS friends are usually /anon because they are tired of getting spammed for raises or PL. If you're in a party and get wiped then it's generally not a problem. But if you just decide to barrel through dunes heading to selbina & drag every mob along the way, then you deserve to die. It's called evasion tactics. Watch the mobs and try and coordinate around their movements.

OK I'm off my soapbox. Point blank...most people who whine about bots are the ones who are pissed that they didn't think of the idea first.
