The wind blew away the sailor's cap that Paytah was minding for his father. You fished it out of the sea, but now it is torn and tattered. If you could only find someone who can repair Paytah's father's cap...

Paytah is at the pier near the shopping piers.

(Level Requirement and Fame Requirement unsure. I didn't get this until Level 21, fairly high fame, and level 21 fishing skill)

I had passed by these two children several times, and each time they spoke to me it was about not talking to passing strangers. But one day, it takes a passing stranger to help poor Paytah in his time of trouble. Paytah's father's favorite cap has been lost to a gust of wind and has been blown into the water. A little bit of fishing skill is needed to fish out his poor father's cap, but when you do, fishing it out of the water has ripped it! Never fear, a ripped cap calls for a hat expert, go to Baren-Moren in the Waters district, he has to be able to repair it. Sure enough, Baren-Moren can fix the cap, but he'll need some fresh material to do it. Baren-Moren would require 4 Dhalmel hides to fix the rip (I think to myself, that's an awfully big cap...).

Dhalmel hides can be found on either Wild Dhalmel in Tahrongi Canyon or Bull Dhalmels in Buburimu Peninsula, but the preferred Dhalmel is the Wild Dhalmel, as it is considerably weaker than its bigger cousin. (and of course off of other players or at the Auction House)

Return to Baren-Moren with the hides, and he not only repairs the cap, he has plenty of material left over to make a Dhalmel Mantle (ah, that's what the extra hides were for...) that he happily passes on to you. Then return the repaired cap to Paytah, and the boy is so pleased he happily turns over a Leather Ring he doesn't need. Both items are pretty decent reward for around a level 18-20 character, or even sell at the Auction House well, so this quest is worth the effort.

My fame was around level 4.
The boy told me his dads hat had been blown away into the sea. Then I went fishing in Port Windhurst, got the hat within a few hours. I went to the boy trade the torn hat to him, he told me it's no good cuz it's torn up. Then I went to the hat store in Windhurst Waters (south) and traded the hat to Baren Moren. He me to bring him 4 Dhamel Hides so he can repair it which i did. You will get the repaired hat from him which u must bring it back to the boy to finish the quest.

once the kid had told you about the hat, you can do this quest. The quest will only appear under your "Current Quests" AFTER you trade the cap to the kid.
WTF is wrong with this kid

I've done about 43 quests for Windurst and 7 for Mhaura. My fame level is:
Hello there Unrender! There aren't many Windurstians who don't know that
name. We're all proud to have you on our side! Keep up the great work!

The sister tells me "I'm stranger than most stranger.... "
the brother tells me about his fathers hat being blown to the sea and whines a bit. He talks for a bit. But the quest is not given to me.
Am I suppose to just go fish? and do the quest without it appearing in my quest list?

Yah, go fish for the had without it being on your list. It was not on my list when I got the hat and handed it to him. It showed up after I handed it to him and he handed it back.

*Edit* I wanted to add that I did this on another char and I got the had with a fishing skill of 0.0 on the second cast. It my have been luck /shrug

Use the right pole

You cannot catch this hat using Willow or Yew fishing poles! We wasted 2 evenings trying to do this, swapped to Bamboo rods and caught it within half an hour..
They dont talk to strangers...

Time of day has no bearing on this quest. If you talk to the sister standing next to the boy she will tell you exactly what is wrong and why you are not getting the quest. Their mother has told them they should not talk to strangers. You must have enough fame that people know of you in Windurst in order not to be a 'stranger' before they begin talking to you.

i'm lvl 1 fishing and 30RDM/15BLM with medium to high fame in each city and rank 3...

wasn't hard to catch and i just bought the hides for 300/piece, check the price for dhalmel mantle and leather ring and was going for almost 2000 total, so i was able to do this in like 20 minutes...

# Jan 08 2004 at 5:28 AM Rating: Default
Well I have 8 fishing skill and I've been throwing all kinds of salt water bait I can think of at the water in the port for hours and still no hat. I have to wonder how on earth any of you managed to fish it up in 1 cast.
# Jan 07 2004 at 4:09 AM Rating: Default
I am BLM16/WHM8 and haven't looked at getting the quest yet, but I have gotten the cap. 0.1 in Fishing skill, with the boost. I got the hat before I got the stupid fish (still haven't caught that one yet).

FYI 23 quests, Mission 4, Rank 2 and well-known for Fame status

RE: Midiany

Fishing skill: 4 (+1 from fishing gloves)
Rod: carbon
Bait: lugworms

Only took me a few tries. I wasn't even looking for it, I discovered this quest trying to figure out what a ripped cap was for.

I caught it on the practice area of the Orastery. The two semi-circular areas on the map. I was fishing for sardines and quus with a glass rod and a sabiki rig. It was fairly soon after I changed fishing spots from the guild pier. However I didn't know what I had caught and just stuck the hat in my safe for a while until I spoke to Paytah and he whined about his hat. I was fishing skill 7 and level 14 at the time. I can finally wear the mantle now that I reached level 18.

Not sure if skill makes a diff, it just takes time.

I think I went from nearly no skill to 4, by the time I caught the hat.

Paytah told me that he lost his cap.. i tried fishing so many times near where he is, but i still didn't fish that ripped cap out.. >_< hmm....
# Dec 08 2003 at 9:54 PM Rating: Default
Definetely not fishing skill related.

I had a fishing skill of 1.x, came back to windurst on a mission, joined the fishing guild, carbon rod + sabiki rig, and i got a ripped cap immediately on first cast.

talked to paytah, I also got the quest (30-40 seperate quests in windurst done). I believe it to be a decent->high fame quest.

I find this is a great quest to do while or when you want to up your fishing skills. It does take sometime to catch the kids hat or a short time, all chance I presume. I did fish for a while and it was only when I moved to where the kids were that I caught the hat. I was fishind down at the Windurst guild.
