So I've seen him a couple times while I was PT'ing in the dunes, and I thought he looked damn cool. Saw a 73BRD solo it, took him 1hr, 53mins. Also saw him decimate a party at lv. 40.
I'm thinking tomorrow that I'm going to give it a shot, this is what it'll look like.

I had a LS member help me when i was lvl 41 to get it, he was 55rdm and owned this thing, I stayed back and cured him rarely, didn't take him long, use him like a mop.
i'm a gimpy 60 pld and me and a 45 blm pretty much just owned this thing.. my hp never fell below 1000 and my vorpal blade hit him for 790 @ 100 tp .. i dont understand how you guys are having so much trouble with it..

I am 50 whm and my friend is 50 rdm, and we made the grievous error of thinking we could take on the Marchalute by ourselves. Before we warped out, we only took off 1/4 of it's life and we were nearly dead.
The next time we went back we took along our buddy that was a 72 rng. He was doing 2500+ dmg to it, and killed it like it was nothing.
If you're going to do this quest, have a full party, or help from higher ups.

Today me and a lvl 70 PLD took it on for my AF1. He killed it in about 5 mins. He used a 300% tp which took about 1/4 of his life off. I thought it was easy. I had:

Well, 2 friends and I fought this today. We died. BUT! We did pretty well for only us three. We were:
47 BLM/WHM - Vacious
46 WHM/BLM - Darkcow
47 WAR/THF (took forever to get together, so we didn't change sub)-Blackarms
Well, Darkcow needed his AF weapon, and we figured, "Hey, it's lvl 41 NM...we can do that." and we weren't far off. We always do everything together, and don't like grabbing high level help to do the dirty work. We grab a few foods, get on Chocobo, and head to Valkurm Dunes. We build TP on surrounding creatures, plan a SC, and get ready for nighttime. Night falls, and the ??? pops. We get ready, and spawn Marchelute. We immediately did our SC, did some pretty nice damage, then just started whacking away at him. Only thing was, a Bogy spawned, and from an AoE Weapon skill, linked to us. Bogy hit little tarus fairly hard, and interrupted a lot of spells. >.> We had Marchelute half dead when one too many cures were stopped and the WAR died. X.x The aggro immediately went on the BLM from Thunder II, even though Benediction was used. Soon after, the BLM was dead. Leaving only the WHM, and that didn't last long.
WELL! We all died, the BLM deleveled, but then again, we did pretty good for just us. We plan on trying again tonight, changing THF sub to MNK, and waiting for the damn bogy to spawn. >.> Kill him, and try again. Now to go get the BLM's level back...We'll beat him, next time. I don't think the "OMG I SO NEED A super high lvl person to help" thing is necessary, since we almost had it. Dimensional Death hit Blackarms for an average of 150, with 2 hitting for over 300. Wasn't so bad. Just our 2gil on the matter.

I asked around on my LSs and got together a PT that breezed through this very easily. Nobody got down below 500hp, and it really was a cakewalk. PT makeup was Me (50WHM/BLM), a 56WHM/BLM, a 64BRD/WHM, and the kicker, a 63SMN/WHM. SMN calls Titan, uses earthen Ward, WHMs Blink up, I pop Marchelute. SMN calls Garuda and starts using Thunder 2 while the rest of us start Cure 3 and 4ing him to death. Total fight time was MAYBE 3 minutes, really was insanely easy with this PT makeup. If anybody needs help on Remora send /tell and I will try to help ^^

I helped a friend to fight Marchelute today.
It was me lvl 60drk/30war and a 46whm/23smn.
I built up over 200tp, then whm casted protectra, shellra and regen and hasted me before she clicked the ???. I provoke as soon as it poped, then I absorbed Str, Vit, followed with a Fire II. I used my Great Sword instead of scythe because it has extra light damage. I used Last Resort then Crescent Moon. I built up tp very fast and I used it as soon as I had a little bit over 100. Whm casted Flash, Dia II and Paralyze. I used Crescent Moon a numbers of time. It took me like 3,4 minutes then at the end me and whm used 2 hrs and it died. Whm had to rest when Marchelute had about a quater health left. It took a while but it wasn't that bad. Flash helped because he missed a lot.

did this today...actually like 3 hrs ago lol....i was in an exp pt in the cave by secret beach when it hit me that this pt could help do my AF1. So they did agree to help me out but i got a "lil" (lol) help from 2 50+ PLD. so first we went to the wrong ???, lol, it was for the sam AF1 i recall, anyway, we started the fight and ofcoars i took the first hit but didn't do much damage cuz i was wearing my holy breastplate among other things. From then on it was easy cuz the pld was tanking marchulete and they bearly took damage. Finished i think in less than 5 minutes and i lotted for my item (that someone wanted to lot befor i did but i was too fast) went back to sandy and completed the quest. I wana say thanks to the people that took the time off to help me out longhand, zonist, chune, hmm, uneverhero (i think), takhike (i hope), vivid (i think) cant remember the rest but it was 8 of us =[ sorry but thanks alot..all in the pandemonium server =]

Everyone here is posting about how easy this guy is to fight. I want to post the story of what happened when I went to go do this for a friend of mine.
It started out just me and my friend and maybe one other, I can't remember what level I was exactly but I know it was 50-something paladin. We ended up sitting around Valkurm for about 45 minutes waiting for night to come and some parties headed into Gustav stopped to talk to us and decided they thought it would be fun to help. By the time we were ready to do the fight, we had a full alliance.
Bad idea.
Of all the extra "help," most people only hit for single digit damage. That was enough to give it TP, but not enough to be worth anything. The NM did dimensional death often enough that it could have been its regular melee attack. Thankfully nobody died, but several people (myself included) came close.
I hope I've entertained at least someone. ^_^

Then we rested and did it again. On the last fight the SAM used his 2-hr and we beat it in about a minute and a half. On the second fight we even aggroed a ghoul and it was still no problem.

To solve any problem you have to use the right tool for the job. In my case the 'right tool' was a 73RNG ^^

I decided to help a friend with this when I noticed she was lvl 43 and didn't have this done yet. Plus I wanted to see what it was like soloing as Paladin/Ninja in preparation for my first Ballista. ^^
I took 3 Yagudo drinks with me for refresh (only ended up using 1), an X-Potion for safe measure, and some shihei.
I asked her to keep haste on me and cure me only if I got below 300 hp.
Before she spawned him, I built TP to 300% so I could start the fight off with a Spirit's Within and cement hate firmly on me. Once I was ready, we ate some steamed crab and I let him hit her for about 200 damage just to scare her a little. ^^
Right after that, I used Spirit's Within and then let him knock Blink off, then I flashed him and decided to keep Blink off and let him smack me around a little so I could cure myself for more hate.
I built up TP to about 200% and used a Cure III, and when I got TP to 300%, I flashed him and Cure IV to completely cap off my hp, and Spirit's Within once again.
After the 2nd Spirit's Within, I drank my Yagudo drink. He was pretty upset with me by this point and was using dimensional death frequently, so I cured myself, used another flash when the timer came up and then I put blink up again.
This guy had some crazy hitpoints but he hit me for 172 damage at the most. The fight took about 6 minutes and could have been faster if I didn't use 2 swords(Dual Wield I with an underleveled sub), but Dual Wield Gluttony and Tactition Magician's Espadon looked so cool. ^^ Also, I would use more HP+ gear for extra damage on the Spirit's Within if I was to do this again.

57 PLD/15 NIN, since my signature will be changing as I level more.

Long story short, I was going to the mines to PT, and saw this thing walking around with a slew of dead bodies around him. I was 58SMN/WHM at the time, so I jumped off my chocobo to start raising people.
I didn't find it odd that a shadow was walking around Valkurm. Either way, it tried to attack me, so I pulled out Carbuncle and took him out extremely easily. Didn't even have to use my 2hr. Just Carbuncle, Metorite, Stoneskin, and the occasional cure or two.
Sometimes I'd get brave and let out a Sunburst from my staff.

Thanks to the post below, I was able to get my WHM AF1 by myself. Since I didn't have Flare, I alternated between Freeze and Firaga II. I got hit by Dimensional Death 2 times, but other than that it was an easy (if lengthy - 30 min) fight.
I basically cast Bind, then Sleep II. Repeated until MP was replenished. Cast Freeze, Sleep I, then Firaga II, Bind, Sleep II. Rinse and repeat. 30 min later, one dead Marchelute and one happy Mithra.

Any Lv 58+ RDM thinking that you can solo this guy^^ this is ur guide to doing so!
Cast Stoneskin, Blink, Shock Spikes/Ice Spikes, Phalanx, haste, Refresh, Protect, Shell, and a En spell.

Gave me a run for my money as a 63 PLD- Used 2 hour during fight and used Vorpal Blade every chance I had. Would of been fine but he has a crazy amount of HP
