Summary

Rescue two merchants form captivity. They should be somewhere in the Quadav camp in Beadeaux.

Walkthrough

Thunder Hawk wants you to rescue two merchants who were kidnapped by Quadavs. They are being held at the jail in Beadeaux. To get into the jail cell, you first need to get a Quadav Charm. This drops from De'Vyu Headhunter.

Once you get the item, take it to the jail door at I-8. This triggers a cut scene. Return to Thunder Hawk with what you learned. He will reward you with 3,000 Gil and a Map of Ranguemont Pass.

Lo!

I accepted the quest from Thunder Hawk, went to Beadeux, managed to kill the NM with 2 quadav aggros as 54RDM/BLM, then continued to the prison @ I-8, the damn thing wouldnt show a cutscene, tried trading the quadav charm, still told me that it looks like a keyhole.
Any ideas?

Just wanted to let you all know that a lv.60Whm is more than capable of "Dealing" with this NM.He gave me three charms and 20xp.What a nice guy.Anyway,I just got done reading the posts for this and decided it was worth a shot.Might as well move to Selbina.By the way,I went as a 60Whm/26Thf...yes I know I was gimped,bu the NM didn't seem to mind a gimped subbed Whm pounding his turtle power post-terrior into dust XD.Now he's been added to the list right behind Serra.Taking one NM down at a time.WHM FTW!

I'd be interested to know how you got 3 charms dropped from one fight seeing as the charms are rare/exclusive....maybe your server has different rules to the rest....

it can drop multiple instances of the charm, I think it usually drops like 3-6 of them, but, he could only take 1, the rest would drop saying he "didn't meet the requirements"
Easy,

I helped a RDM friend of mine finish this quest. I was BLM50/WHM, and she was RDM43/BLM21. Very easy fight. We even had many links, but they were little of a problem...thanks to Sleepga and Sleep II. ^^ Hehe, I opened the fight with Freeze. XD. She just kinda healed me during the fight. I actully went melee when I was low on MP, using my Scythe.

NM or just named?
# May 19 2006 at 3:23 AM Rating: Decent
It seems that they've recently changed this NM from just a named mob, to an actual NM, cuz he used to check, but now he's Impossible to Guage. In any case sneak is all you'll need, and he's standing prior to the toughest quadav area, so a lvl 55+ doesn't get agro, or so.
Nice drop rate
# Apr 21 2006 at 9:01 PM Rating: Decent
I would think anyone 50+ would have no problem at all with De'Vyu Headhunter.

The drop rate for Charms seems to be very good. When I did this quest, he dropped 3 charms after the first fight.

I soloed Headhunter as a RDM54/BLM27.

Quadavs around were too weak and didn't aggro, except the ones in the path that leads to the deep part of Beadeaux, but these were too far to aggro.
De'Vyu conned Impossible to gauge to me so it's a NM, not only a named monster.
I went with updated gear and spells, an Ice Staff, and buffed with
- Protect III,
- Shell II,
- Stoneskin,
- Blaze Spikes,
- Regen,
- Refresh,
- Haste.

No food was needed, and I don't have Phalanx yet, I'm too poor ;_; (going for 200k on Remora). I was lucky and got no ads, although I was the only one in all Beadeaux at this time. It left me with 44 MP and over 400 HP.
After this all I had to do is sneak, go check the door, view cutscene and warp back to Jeuno, then run to Selbina (where I bought Blizard II cheap, btw ^^)

Hope this helps.

I used sleep bolts and Utsusemi. He got me in the red but only because I was kiting him around trying to avoid links. Not to mention my lvl 30 gloves/legs/ and feet armor. Not the best DEF in the world at that lvl. lol I had to use my two hour. He was hitting me for around 50-60 per hit if I remember correctly. All in all a pretty fun battle. If I had some bloody bolts it may have went smoother. But in the end I got that sucker good. XD

I killed him twice as a 42 NIN, first time solo and second time with a level 70 MNK. Both times he checked as EM to me. I was able to solo him the first time and didn't even hit yellow, so I'd say that as a 60 RNG/NIN you could easily take him.

I imagine you won't have much trouble with him. Today I was just hanging out in the area and decided to give him a shot solo at 49 WAR/THF.

At 49, he conned DC - - to me. Built up 300 TP and used bloody bolts on way too weak Copper and Old Quadavs in the nearby trenches to get up to full health.

Waited until there weren't a lot of other Quadavs nearby (all high Too Weak or Low Easy Prey to me). Sneak Attack > Silent Oil....hit him from behind for a crit and run to the corner where there was less of a chance of getting any adds.

He was hitting me for a good 50-80 per hit so I popped a Pear Au Lait within the first couple of hits to give me a little buffer of life.

Aggressor >> Warcry >> Mighty Strikes >> Berserk >> Sturmwind nailed him for 606 and 5 200+ crits later he lay twitching on the ground. In the end, he got me down to around 200-300hp.

In hindsight, the only thing I would've done different is eat some attack food to take him down a little quicker (almost got an add from a high too weak Quadav which would've certainly swung the tide back in his favor...but luckily I got the killing blow just as it came in to range).

You shouldn't get aggro unless you head for the jail, and even then most things were either Easy Prey or Decent Challenge to me at 49.
Wasn't too bad....
# Apr 20 2005 at 4:24 AM Rating: Decent
I soloed him as a lv53 thf/nin. He was hitting me for around 40-60 per hit. Fortunately, he only did about 200 damage total thanks to utsusemi and physical evasion II. However, the fight took forever, though, as I was only hitting for 20-30 :\. 25xp from the battle though :).

I didn't have any sneak oils. Consequently, I got aggro from an even match mythril quadav, so I had to [perfect dodge] + warp my way out of there....

I returned later with my 36whm to finish the quest. Wasn't too bad....

Tried solo and failed
# Apr 18 2005 at 3:27 AM Rating: Decent
I had tried solo this quadav at level 51 for two times. Before that I checked the level of this quadav is 45 and it's "Easy Prey" for me.

I skip describing the first failure. First of all I killed some Bronze or Copper Quadavs to charge up my TP to 300%. Next I went to the place where near Headhunter. On the way I should get silenced to pass the cursed area therefore I waited for silence gone.

After that I used my sneak oil, casted Utsusemi and Sneak Attack at the back of Headhunter. Next I triggered the "Attack" button then I quickly pressed the macro to cast the Viper Bite. I hope it can make appearent damage to Headhunter for easy fighting thereafter but it reported to me: 150 damage....

****... I knew this time I should fight this quadav hard again and I should count on time to cast Utsusemi to reduce the damage taken. Everything was okay during fight until another quadavs are linked. I unlocked the Headhunter and casted Flee to escape. Luckly I had planned the emergency route and at last I zoned out.

As a THF I think I should need a hand to fight this quadav, or better solo it at higher level... say level 55.

So I decide to get a map, figure I might need it for my AF.

I travel to Selbin, Talk to Thunder, and make my way to that infested Quadav marsh.

I'm a 50RNG/THF now. I should have subbed NIN, but it didn't cross my mind until it was too late to turn back really. I was farming beforehand.

I make my way delecately past any aggroing Quadav. There were only a couple, but it was still terrifying. One link and it'd all be over.

I finally fight the Headhunter. . I had built up TP beforehand, and unleashed a Piercing arrow. Ranged attacked a couple more times and used Barrage, Then I used Eagle Eye Shot.

This was the closest NM (or named Monster, whatever) that I had ever fought. (And I soloed the Dragoon Wyvern at level 42! .. but I subbed NIN then and had 4 potions)

In the end I had 18 of the 721 HP I started out with, had he got one more hit in I would have been finished.

I was lucky as hell.

However, the Quadavs past the Headhunter all conned EP or higher ... I'd be dead meat it one aggroed ... luckly I subbed THF (as I had forgotten to bring Silent Oils as well.... Yes, I was unprepared)

I Fleed past them and they never aggroed.

A Steel Quadav guarded the Jail cell, but I found a safe spot and waited for him to leave.

After the cutscene I had to get out of there .. I had forgotten to bring my Warp Scroll (I'm forgetting everything!)

I make a break for it and flee out of there ... only to get slaughtered by 30 Quadavs.

Ah well .. minus some EXP.. I got my map.

You'll need sneak (obviously) AND invis because there are sheep (Broo or something) that aggro by sight right around there. I forgot that the sheep aggro sight, so I got pummeled.

I think I was 46 or 47, and the sheep conned easy prey. But it was enough to get rid of sneak, and aggro/link all the quadavs onto me. =D

Here's an odd question, but do you keep the charm for the mission when you save them, or do you have to kill this guy twice, once for the magicite mission, and once for the quest?

you could save the charm for the mission. but you lose the charm when u use it for the mission. so its better to do this quest 1st.

Thanks for the info on jail being at I-8. The only problem is getting there. The map is one of no clear connections.

Being at level 35 does not give me the chance to just look around slowly as sneak/invis seems to wear off at the point where I'm usually surrounded by mobs. Which means aggro and quick run for life or warp if lucky.

I have tried several times to find my way only to get fustrated. If someone has clear step by step directions on how to get there I would appreciate it. Thank you...

The jail is really close to where the headhunter spawns just go to I-8 and fall down into the lower area and its right there. I was afraid to fall down, fearing I wouldn't be able to get back up. Just go and trade the charm to it and you get a cutscene and a key item and head back to selbina to talk to the guy and you're done.

I did this with a 55 whm and even though we got 4 links during the fight we weren't in too much danger, the whm was a bit low on mp but neither one of us were in yellow hp. Maybe shes just that good ;)

I had this quest at lvl 19 I think. If not that low then I am lvl 21 now and I have had it a while. Granted you'll need high level help to accomplish this, but you can still get the quest at lower levels. This one is a fame dependent quest.

The title of this quest is "The Rescue".
It is linked to San D'Oria and Bastok, so your Selbina fame has absolutely nothing to do with Windurst.

Using the Quadav Charm
# Feb 19 2004 at 12:17 PM Rating: Default
Do you have to trade the Quadav Charm with the door to make it open to get the cutscene?
RE: Using the Quadav Charm
# Feb 22 2004 at 11:16 PM Rating: Default
Yes, assuming you have the quest active.
Yes, You will lose the Quadav Charm.
You can only carry one of them at one time since they are Rare/EX.
So if you want to do the Rank5 mission at the same time, you will have to wait for Headhunter to respawn, and kill him again.
