Description

To get this quest, talk to an NPC named Alfesar in Rabao at (H-7) near the pond rim. He will ask you to find something in the Quicksand Caves.

Make sure you have a map ready. Head off to the Quicksand Caves entrance in Eastern Altepa Desert at (J-7). You must find a targetable ??? in there and touch it for the key item Ancient Tablet Fragment.

How to get to the ??? points:

You will only need Sneak for this quest.

Enter through the (J-7) entrance of Eastern Altepa. This is our starting point, you will not need to check any other entrances.

Okay, on this first map you're in you'll notice there's a drop at (I-7)/(J-7). If you fall on the Western side of the drop it will take you to 1/5 of the spawnpoints. If you drop down the Eastern side, this route will eventually lead us to the other 4/5 spawnpoints.

If you choose to go West, hug the right wall until you you're in a dead end with a beetle at (H-6). This is a spawnpoint. If it is not there exit at (D-5) to Eastern Altepa and return to the (J-7) entrance to our starting point to now check the other points.

If you go East, hug the right wall until you come to the open room. There is a spawn point in the middle of this room around (H-10) or (G-10). If it's not there, continue to head west hugging the right wall until you reach the other smaller room. In the Northwest corner of this room in (E-9) is another spawn point. On the map, you'll notice there is another drop thing. Drop into the (F-10) portion in the Southeast corner, signified by a little A.

You are now on the 2nd map.

Follow the path through until you reach the junction at (F-9). Turn right first, and travel to around (D-9) to check this spawn point. If it isn't there, turn around and head East. You'll reach the open room and you're going to want to take the Southeast passage from this room in (I-10). Take a left at the junction and head East until you reach (L-11)... the last spawnpoint. If it is not at this point, then it has sadly moved and you're going to want to start again.

Spawnpoints on first map: H-6, H-10, E-9 Spawnpoints on second map: D-9, L-11

Once you obtain the Ancient Tablet Fragment, return to Rabao and talk to Alfesar again. He will tell you to go to San d'Oria Cathedral to meet Charlaimagnat.

Charlaimagnat is located downstairs. When you first enter the chapel turn left and at the end of the hallway before the Manuscript room there is a stairway on the right. Talk to him to get the reward. He'll ask you to come back another day because he need to translate the scroll first. Return to him when he's done and you'll get your reward.

Thank you for the extra info that they didn't include in the walkthrough. I got the printed maps from the website and once I made it to J-7 in the Desert, it only took me about 5 min to find the ??? (mine was at D-9 of 2nd map). Now to wait for my teleport :(

The printed walkthru is perfect. I just thought of how to maybe save a bit of running so here it is.

Let me say that I did this quest (the actual ??? hunting part) in about 5 minutes. I did spend a lot of time fumbling bindly around altepa (my first time there) trying to find rabao before I bought the map (which is only sold in rabao^^). The uber manticores there make it so much less stressful... heh.

The map of quicksand caves is here : http://ffxi.killvoid.com/maps/quicksand.htm . When he talks about what maps to use on this page, it is the top left map, and the map below it. The rest don't come into play for this quest.

What i reccomend doing is entering quicksand caves from J-7 of east altepa.

Once inside quicksand caves, at the I-7 / J-7 (top left map) point where you must choose southeast or southwest, take the southeast path. This leads to 4 of the 5 possible spawn locatoins for ???.

IF you do not find the ??? on this run thru the cave, exit quicksand caves at J-7 (middle left map). This puts you out to east altepa at about H-10. Because you did not see the ??? at the first 4 places, it must be in the last place.

Instead of going all the way back to J-7 of East Altepa, just head north from H-10 to H-8, and enter quicksand caves that way. This will put you in the caves at C-5 on the top left map. As the map shows, head east, south, and east to the dead end (with a beetle in it) and the ??? should be there.

If you go thru all 5 spots, and don't find it, it probably means someone else just took it, and you'd have to start the process over.

Anyway, sneak is all you need, and a safe spot to re-cast it. Good Luck!

It isn't 8 hours real time. You have to wait until midnight Japan time (10am PST / 7am EST) before you are able to obtain the scroll from Charlaimagnat after giving him the tablet and letter of introduction. Best of luck!

Thank you! I followed the instructions here, and solo'd this as a lvl 36 WHM. I only got Ant aggro once, and warped to my Home Point in Rabao. (Lucky me, it was only a mage and did very little damage, Thank you Protectra, Shellra, Stoneskin, Blink & Blaze Spikes)

The second time thru, I patiently searched each of the areas and finally found it in the last area of L-11. I was almost to the point of crying too because I was at L-11 and didnt see the ??? until I was almost at the end of the hall. I got my key-item, warped to Rabao, spoke to the friar, and used tele-Holla to get to Sandy. Now I need to get a party to get to level 38. Thank you again!

Quest or buy?

Consider the following situation: you are a rich WHM and you want to get the Teleport-Altep scroll. Of course you have 2 choices: buying it from the AH or doing the quest.

I say: do the quest. Why? Because it's the easiest of the teleport quests. Period. (Notice that I am supposing you are a WHM 38+).

Ok, what do you do?

1 - Ensure yourself you have enough fame in Sandy. A very easy way to get fame there is doing a repeatable quest in Selbina where you trade millioncorns (I posted this info at the Teleport-Dem section).

2 - Go to Rabao. The NPC you are looking is near the lake.

3 - VERY IMPORTANT. Set your Home Point in Rabao. "Why would I do such a stupid thing?" you may ask. That's because you may need to warp back here if you take the wrong way in Quicksand Caves. Unless you are willing to pay a lot of teleports to Altep.

4 - Follow the intructions given in this forum. Remember that you must have Sneak always on. It's not hard, but you can get lost if you don't have a map. You may also get inside a place with no way back ... in this case, HP, choco your way back there and try again.

5 - Warp back to Rabao and talk again to the NPC. Now you will have to leave Rabao and head to Sandy. How do you do that if you have your HP set in Rabao? If you are a WHM 36+ just teleport yourself to Holla (duh?); if you're not a WHM, go to Altep telepoint, do a /sea "Lower Jeuno" WHM 38-75 and politely ask one to come to Altep and teleport you to Holla. Don't forget to pay him well.

6 - After you talk to the NPC in the cathedral, wait for 8 hours real time and the scroll is yours!

Good luck ^^

I did this as a BLM42/WHM21.
So if you're a BLM above 40, you're good. You'll have Escape and Sneak. Plus warp. HP was in Jeuno, just used the airhship. (Though I suppose if I was BLM75/WHM36...lol
Anyway...yeah nothing else.
If you have a BLM as main, you likely have WHM at 20 or higher (if you're my level) you can always do it this way. Easy as pie. (Infact, my BLM was eating pie in the party earlier :-p)
Fame

Let me clear this up for alot of you. Fame to get this quest is directly related to fame in San d Oria. You must have atleast "You are famous in this country" in San d Oria to receive the Teleport-Altep quest.

After reading that all you need is sneak in this area, I was pretty happy I would be able to solo it.

Until I got aggroed like crazy.

So, might want to cast invisible too. Cause sneak didn't keep the Anticans off me.

Everything in this zone is Sneak, except for the Beetles which are Invis. Keep an eye out for the odd NM if they haven't already been killed as they will see through both sneak and invis.

No need for maps, no need for figuring things out and frustrating yourself with this terrible quest. I died once, but I'll get that later.

All you need is a very paitent friend. That's it. Just set yourself to /follow after casting Sneak or using a Silent Oil, and spam the HELL out of tab. Just tab tab tab tab tab. Sooner or later you'll find it. My friend and I discovered the Cloister of Earth or whatever (Titan SMN fight), and had to Teleport-Altep out once (she already had done the quest).

A word of warning though, there ARE some pretty nasty NMs here. We actually had the misfortune to run into one, and got to watch it beat the living hell out of a pair of level 60+'s before sneaking very carefully away from this menance.

Also, if you're going to do it the way I did, by /following, make a /ma "Sneak" <me> macro for yourself. I got killed when I accidentially targeted my friend for sneak, and a bunch of Anticans noticed me and decided I wasn't their friend :(

But I got my damned scroll in the end. Stupid Anticans.

There are at least two different ??? that spawn in the Quicksand Caves. One seems to spawn in the dead end sand areas where you can also find the coffer. This is not the one you want.

The ??? you want (when I found it) spawned in the rubble fallen from one of the walls.

One death, two coffers (no key though :/ ), and numerous incorrect ???s later, I got the tablet piece.

This site is awesome for maps.

http://ffvault.ign.com/?dir=maps&content=zonemap

This has a full mpa of all the different zones and how they connect, whether they are outside or dungeon zones, and full in game maps for each area.

Some characters are in Japanese but all the dungeon maps are labeled with letters to show where the maps connect.

It has helped me more times than I can count :)

30 minutes. Looked in all three West Altepa, not there. Went into the first East Altepa location, took the right path, bingo. It's great that sneak is all you need. By the way, I'm level 50, my sneak lasts a lot longer than yours will if you're 38 or lower (with some randomality to it of course).

The guy takes about 8 hours to finish the thing, a full vana'diel week. I logged back in and found out that the guy still wasn't finished, so I slapped him a few times, and sat down while talking to the linkshell. I'm like "hm... new day" checked him again, and he was done. YAY!
Small Correction
# Apr 15 2004 at 2:28 PM Rating: Decent
Ok guys I just want to start by saying I strongly dislike all post before me saying they got it in 10 minutes. Took me over 4.5 hours total to complete this quest. I guess that's only fair, I spend a total of 2 hours doing all three of the first teleport family scrolls.

Ok there is a need for a little correction in the orginal post. Here is exactly what it says;

"East Altepa entrances to Quicksand Caves: H-10, J-7 (this one you will have to go in twice, because it branches off into 2 passages that you cannot return from and exit elsewhere)"

Actually I spent so much time wondering through out this whole cave I doubt I will ever need the map for this area. For the East Altepa area there is only one place that you need to go and that is J-7 (but go there twice like the post says). When J-7 splits the left tunnel takes you to the H-10 entrance. The right passage actually takes you to H-8 (which I'm not sure you can enter or exit from here).

Thank you all for posting it was a great help to me. Also good luck to all who will be doing this quest in the future. ^^

I have now mastered this quest from spending around five hours on it with 3 others. I know all the spawn points and the map by memory now. Here's a walkthrough...

1 - Print out map. http://www.killingifrit.com/maps/quicksand.htm Note: You will only need the first 2 maps from the top on this page.

2 - Make sure you have lots of sneak... invisible will not be needed.

3 - Enter through the J-7 entrance of Eastern Altepa. This is our starting point, you will not need to check anyother entrances.

Okay, on this first map you're in you'll notice there's a drop at I/J-9. If you fall on the western side of the drop it will take you to 1/5 of the spawnpoints. If you drop down the eastern side, this route will eventually lead us to the other 4/5 spawnpoints.

IF YOU CHOOSE WEST hug the right wall until you you're in a dead end with a beetle at (H-6). This is a spawnpoint. If it is not there... exit at D-5 to Eastern Altepa and return to the J-7 entrance to our starting point to now check the other points.

EAST - hug the right wall until you come to the open room. There is a spawn point in the middle of this room around H-10 or G-10 ish. If it's not there, continue to head west hugging the right wall until you reach the other smaller room.
In the northwestern corner of this room in E-9 is another spawn point. On the map, you'll notice there is another drop thing. Drop into the F-10 portion in the southeastern corner, signified by a little A.

You are now on the 2nd map.

Follow the path through until you reach the junction at F-9. Turn right first, and travel to around D-9 to check this spawn point. If it isn't there, turn around and head east.
You'll reach the open room, and you're going to want to take the southeastern passage from this room in I-10. Take a left at the junction and head east until you reach L-11... the last spawnpoint.
If it is not at this point, then it has sadly moved and you're going to want to start again.

The compact version??

Spawnpoints on first map: H-6, H-10, E-9
Spawnpoints on second map: D-9, L-11

I'm pretty sure I'm right, please correct me if I'm wrong on anything. Feel free to ask for help if on my server.

This absolutely should be the quest write-up featured at the top of the page. This one is great.

Why, oh why, is the current one still up there? You have no need to go check every nook and cranny, and certainly no need to go to go to Western Altepa Desert.

After just scrolling down a bit, I found the spawn point in 10 minutes. Booya.
