Summary

The star tree saplings at the farm in the basement of Heavens Tower aren't growing very well. Doctor Shantotto and co. have ordered an investigation to try and solve the problem. Help them by bringing back a glowstone from the crevasse of Xarcabard.

Walkthrough

Once your black mage is level 40, go to Windurst Walls and enter Heaven's Tower. Walk down the stairs to the basement of the giant tree and speak with the NPC Chumimi. You will receive a cutscene, after which Shantotto will ask you to toss a Faded Crystal into the gorge in Xarcabard. She asks you to bring back a Glowstone.

First, you must obtain a Faded Crystal. To do this, get one of any type of crystal and head to any of the teleport crags. Trade your crystal to the crag to receive your Faded Crystal.

Next, head to Xarcabard. You can get there either by teleporting (if you have the teleport crystal), or by traveling through Ranguemont Pass and Beaucedine Glacier. Also make sure you have silent oils or prism powders, or that you can cast sneak or invisible.

Once in Xarcabard, head due west until you see lights shooting out from a steep hillside at E-8. There are two "???" here, and the one that's inside the gorge surrounded by the lights is the one you want. You do not want the one that's on a cliff with the torch.

Try to clear out the surrounding demons. Trade the faded crystal to the "???" and a Chaos Elemental will appear. It is a Light Elemental based NM, so most Black Magic spells will inflict extreme damage to it. If you must run away, the elemental will eventually go back into the gorge and you will need another faded crystal to call upon it again.

Once the fight is over the monster will drop a Glowstone. Get the glowstone then go back to Windurst Walls. Enter Heaven's Tower and approach Chumimi again. Trade the glowstone to Chumimi to receive your Casting Wand.

would this be easier to wait till 50's and do it then so not so many aggros and can use ancient magic not that it would do much more then the reg spells and by that time would have a couple of the lvl III spells so what do u think just wait????

This Quest was fun... Except for the demons..ehich killed me twice so I had to seeek refuge in Castle Zvhal..THen we found the elemental spawn point and killed it then I warped back to windy with stables scarf..
SO if you do this Quest with a high level party or level 70 have him/her sneak you around so you don't die..^.^

Ive done this twice so far. The first time i did it was /w a 56 sam and a 60 mnk/thf for myself. The second time was for a blm friend in my linkshell. Here's the set up: 51/25 blm (me), 52/25 blm, 71 pld/war (i know overkill) and a 52 whm/blm. The run there was a bit tough as we caught alot of aggro due to invi running out at bad times. Most of the mobs there like evil eyes were easy prey right up until the demons which conned decent challenge to me. The elemental is light based just like the guide says and casts spells such as flash and diaga 2. BLM trades the faded crystal to the ??? and the PLD opens up /w provoke and spirits within for around 580 damage, and we did the usual blizzard 2/ thunder 2 combos. You can also make use of aspir here as the Chaos elemental has alot of MP. At about 1 quarter HP left me and the other BLM both finished it off /w dual freezes.
Some tips from my personal experience:
1. If some1 catches aggro HELP THEM!!! to lvl 40s the mobs will be VT and IT
2. When u finally reach the ??? at E-8 clear the area of the 2 demon pawns that spawn to the left
3. Try not to rest next to the upper ridge as demons will aggro u from above. (this happened to me, a demon wizard and pawn stormed down the hill side and came at me)
4. Demons tend to wander a bit so always keep ur eyes on ones that "seem" far away
5. Finally once the BLM is ready to trade the Faded Crystal to the ??? make sure ur tank is ready to provoke as the elemental will attack the BLM as it spawns

Black Mage gets screwed for AFs... I've been told this by every job in the game. Get used to Xacabard doing AF1 because you gotta go back... twice more.

Quick AF Rundown:
AF1 = kill chaos elemental in Xacabard
AF2 = kill water elemental in Crawler's Nest, then go to Xacabard and Castle Zavhl Baileys to get a key, only to take the key to the Keep to get your boots
AF3 = kill darkness elemental in Toraimai Canal (sorry if my spelling sucks)
AF4 = this is the same one i hear most the other jobs complain about because they "have to go to xacabard"... Yep, this is the Dark Spark quest for your gloves in (horror) Xacabard and Castle Zavhl once again.
AF5/AF6 = the last 2 are coffers. one in Eldieme Necropolis (which i'm told by several higher lvl BLMs is hardest and I'm inclined to agree with after dying 10+ times on Genkai I) and one in Davoi/Monastic Caverns. Joy and rapture. ::rolls eyes::

Needless to say, all I have done is AF1 because it's rather difficult to convince people to head off to the snowy Northlands of Xacabard to assist in destroying some demons to get a key and then go to the Keep to use the blasted thing (oddly enough, it was easy to get help with the Water elemental part of AF2... at least for me).

Getting to Xacabard at level 50 (when i finally cornered some friends into helping) wasn't really hard... Only the occasional Giant or Bat Eye conned Easy Prey in Beaucadine Glacier. The only person in my 5-person party that was higher than lvl 52 was the 58 PLD/WAR that so kindly offered his services. The rest of us (BLM/WHM (me), RDM/SMN, MNK/THF, MNK/WAR) were level 50-52. Moving through Xacabard wasn't all that hard... links were a pain, and Ice elementals that seemed to be all over handicapping our spell-casting made it more difficult than it probably should have been. But we made it to the ??? without much incident (meaning we killed every skeleton and demon that aggro'd between the Glacier zone and the ???). Rested up and I spawned the Chaos Elemental.

Two demons spawned and aggro'd during our fight (of course). The PLD used Provoke and Flash to pull them off us, then Invincible to solo them so we could kill the elemental. RDM and I owned it. Then RDM turned to heal the PLD, I continued nuking (turning spells on the demons then) and the monks beat the heck out of the demons. All in all much easier to do than I thought it would be. Manafont to Warp II everyone else and Warp myself (it lasts just long enough for that) back to Jueno, and that was that.

But I don't want to hear about how "hard" the Whm AF1 is... because yeah... the mob you WHMs have to fight is much more difficult. But it doesn't change the fact that you only have to go to the dunes. No aggro all the way to the fight, and none during the fight to speak of. The demons and skeletons in Xacabard rated from EP to T, and the Ice elementals (if i remember correctly) were T-VT to me at level 50. The arguement isn't about the mob you have to kill for the quest... it's the LOCATION the quest sends you to to complete it.

And as for the weapon (lvl 41, dam 12, delay 216, MP +20)... Far better reward for the Whm there. I'd rather have my Lilith's Rod (lvl 50, dam 19, delay 288, MP+10, INT+5, Add. Effect: MP Drain) or Ice Staff (lvl 51, dam 30, delay 366, INT +4, VS Wind +15, Elem. Magic Skill+10 Add. Effect: Ice Damage). Anyway, lot of work for a weapon I'll probably just toss after I get the full AF set. And that's about enough for my little rant... I'm gonna go [Freeze] something now...
research = no complaints!
# Oct 27 2004 at 11:21 AM Rating: Decent
I'm just going to say after having reading all the complaints here... Xarc. is a lvl 60+ area... my 57PLD gets aggro from EP. The NM IS lvl 40, the AREA is not!! >< so if you want to do this i suggest youbring some lvl 60's with you. Especially a SAM due to arcana ^.~* GL....take more care because youll get hella aggro if not level enough. XD

as tarutaru blm, i find this AF1 weapon to be gimped in comparison to the WHM AF1 weapon(which i am a proud owner of ^^). with all the trouble you have to go thru to just get to the blasted NM it would be better if it had stats like: MP+10 INT+2 or Elemental Magic +5 but thats only my opinion. i plan on doing this anyways just for the sheer fun of seeing Xarcabard and hearing the music of the place (i heard its nice but i dont know for sure). anyways, i have a friend whos a 60 DRG and 71 WHM friend who i hope will help me out ;) btw, wheres is the crag in this place? i plan on picking it up while im there?

there is no "Crag" in xarcabard, however there is a teleport crystal on top of a stairs at the NORTHWEST area of grid (H-8)

i did this quest today for my blm i had help from a lvl 67 red mage, a 52 white mage and a 65 white mage
getting to the ??? was quite a ***** at one point my sneak was gone and we had 4 agros in like 2 seconds :)
the fight with the elemental was easy, the rdm didnt want us to die, so he and the whm duo'd it while me and the 52 whm just sit back and sneak invis and enjoy the view :)

The hardest part about this quest is getting to the ??? alive!

Party was 59Blm, 55Blm, 52Whm(me), 46Brd, 42Rdm

Oddly enough neither of the blm had even accepted this quest until a few hours before we went (did Rdm and Brd AF1 at the same time).

Travelling through Beaucedine Glacier wasn't really a problem, any aggro was easily taken care of (hurray for skill-up!). Xarcabard can be found by going as North-west as you can, and taking any oppurtunity to go up.

There's a huge visibility problem here due to all the snow, so if you're having trouble navigating, turning the weather effects will be a big help.

Once we got into Xarcabard the trouble started. First attempt to get to the Telepoint resulted in us training a crapload of Lost Souls and 2 deaths ;_;

Once we got our mess sorted out, we got to the Telepoint with a little guidance from a kind japanese player and we continued on our way through the zone. We got aggro from a couple demons on the way, but they weren't that tough. No higher than DC to me at 52.

Once you reach the gorge, I'd recommend clearing any possible aggro. Rest up and go for it.

The Chaos Elemental is weak to all black magic. However, Divine magic is heavily resisted, my Elemental Seal + Holy only did 14dmg =(

With the two blm nuking it to hell it was no problem. Second time through we got a couple adds, but we still managed with plenty of mp to spare. Easily doable by a party of 40-41, just bring at least a couple blm.

This quest is ridiculously hard for how terrible the blm AF weapon is. I really recommend bringing higher level help, or you can be in for a very long trip. Took us approx. 1.5hours.

Four members of my static party were going to finally get the BLM's AF1 yesterday. We had PLD, WHM (me), BLM, and THF, all levels 50-52.

Our THF got disconnected and had to catch up to us. We had almost gotten to the gorge when he entered Xarcabard. I have no idea what he did initially, but he trained Xarcabard up to the point where the ramp goes down (at the gorge).

We were resting and waiting for him, trying to avoid the demons. He dies at the ramp. I planned to get him but one of the demons aggro'd. So the three of us kill both demons eventually and then rest. Either the PLD or THF mentioned they respawn fast.

We get fully rested and the BLM goes to the ??? to spawn the elemental. The battle wasn't a problem but the demons respawned like we expected. We kept moving back into the southern corner to avoid the demons which worked for a few minutes. They finally saw us and we fought all 3 mobs. We focused on the elemental and the PLD used Invincible once the elemental went down. He took the demons away trying to give us time to get out. He was in the red when he did that so I went up and used Benediction and ran back. Neither of us had enough MP to get out. I used one of the few juices I had and soon got 75 for Teleport. The PLD died then and the demons came after me. I tried casting Teleport-Holla a few times but got interrupted each time. The BLM used Sleepga which worked but not long enough for Teleport. I think he used Manafont at some point because he cast Warp II on me then Warp on himself. I ended up in Jeuno alive, he didn't. We found him at the Home Point in Port Jeuno dead. Fortunately a higher level WHM was there and used Raise II. The THF and PLD respawned.

The BLM got what he needed but not what he wanted. I told him to use the Wand to get the rest of his AF then we'll take it to the furnace in Garlaige.

BattleMages unite! Stop sitting in the back like a girly taru whm! Get up there and fight!!!

hope you all consider what i have put infront of you :) m"(@.^)"m

Yay! Another melee Black Mage! I thought I was the only one! I'm up at the front of the action every battle, no matter the threats to kick me out, because fighting matters to me. Besides, what's the point in staying at the back? Club Skill is currently only 9 points behind capping. ~_^

wow i bet the tanks love u. unless u dont do your real job. ull get a lot of hate from nuking and enfeebling alone, but adding combat to it. unless ur healers and tanks ae awesome im surprised u havent put 2 and 2 together on y u probably die all the time. this wand is worthless, the dusky staff is much better but you cant use a sheild with it. sure ur thinking haha blm and shield but u can black a few stray hits with it. blm have scythe now but unless ur in a skill up party, if u even know what that is, or ur out training and want a damage weapon u shouldnt have to use it or any weapon. u all can rate this post bad but atleast see the point first

I'll start off by saying that this mob is nothing compared to the enemies that you will aggro on your way there. The trip itself will kill you before the actual NM does.

I had just recently finished off this NM with my LS, and things went *rather* smoothly. Our party was a 42BLM/18WHM <me>, 43BLM/21WHM, 43DRG/20War, 43DRG/21THF, 43WHM/21BLM, and 43RDM/21WHM. We pretty much played hide and seek until we got to the gorge part where the WHM cast invis and sneak on all of us.

The damn ??? spot was located much higher in the gorge than I had expected (you have to manuever your way upwards through the rifts until you almost reach the top where the castle lies, near there is a gorge which harbors the ???). Well our first fight with the elemental was a piece of cake. I threw in the crystal and walked back where our DRG/WAR took aggro and then both BLMs railed it with silence, bio2, and elemental 2 spells.

Our second run tho the other BLM aggroed 2 demons which nearly decimated us, if it werent for a timely use of our 2hrs. So that pretty much scared the crap out of us, but after resting the BLM went at it again and we killed it a second time, no problem. At the end of our fight tho another Demon aggroed us, so we shouted at everyone to pass on the item quick so we could have the WHM tele us out of there.

The elemental is a pushover when silenced, and any elemental 2 spell will hit it hard and take it down relatively fast. Just be careful not to aggro demons as they tend to link and tend to hand you your *** ^^;

omg, I hate this place. and I know Xarcabard is a scary place. the monsters there, it's either undead or demons. I hate this place. even @ lv.55 u can still get aggro!!
damn!!
and @ the ??? area there r demons. and u do want to clear that area. Demons aggro on sigh. and boy do they have a good eyes!!!! when u pull 1, 3 others came alone too... damn.... even they have a good distence. (got killed 3 times in a road)
the Chaos Elemental r easy to kill. but the Demons that's there r hard!!
suggestion

if you have a full parties of mostly melleers (spelling?) you wont do a thing to the elemental, because its an "elemental". they are weak vs. magic, this one in perticular is weak vs dark magic (duh) so swords, axes and things like that wont do anything to it. i'd suggest forming a party of 3 blm's 1 whm, and 2 tanks that can also provoke ^_^

actually, marchelute (WHM AF1) is level 41 according to allakhazam and is actually much harder.. he spams dimensional death. when i did whm AF1, i went with a 75 whm and it was not a piece of cake. and also according to allakhazam, the chaos elemental is only 42.... granted xarcabard isnt as easy to walk through, but the chaos elemental is extremely weak to black magic whereas marchelute is a tavnazian ranger and not nearly as weak to any particular element.

the hardest part about this quest is getting through Xarcabard.

Yes, I know that sneak oil and prism powders will keep you unaggro'd from pretty much all mobs (goddamn tiger).

Anyways, many people, Black Mages and everybody else, has not been to Xarcabard and therefore have no clue where they're going. On top of that, not many people have maps either.

I remember going for Warp 2 when I was a lvl 38 BLM... That wasn't fun. I had to get a high level that was running around to help me find everyplace.

I don't know where I'm going with this.. Oh ya, the mobs are high level and will aggro if you aren't careful. At level 41, a white mage won't get aggro'd in the Dunes until you are fighting the mob.. .:. Bajillion in Xarcabard as opposed to 30 in Dunes.
Look here.

OK, this guide, and like many others, was poorly written so let me try my hand at it. It's sad that there's a subscription fee for some service on this site, and a lot of the 'walkthroughs' are written by someone with a poor grasp of the English language.

Once you have attained level 40 with you Black Mage, head over to Windurst Walls and enter Heaven's Tower. Head to the left (not the doors where you ascend the staircase to the Star Sybil) and follow it all the way down until it ends and you see the NPC Chumimi. Once you talk to Chumimi a cutscene will play where Shantotto, Koru-Moru, and Yoran-Oran will enter and argue over who is right in diagnosing the problem with the baby Star Trees. Most it is really funny ("Watch it, or I'll turn you into a pair of dirty underwear!") but none of the doctors will agree.

It doesn't matter with whom you agree, as the message "No one paid any attention to you." will be displayed. Then, Koru-Moru and Yoran-Oran go off themselves to perform what they believe will fix the problem, but Shantotto will turn to you. After calling you a total loser, she'll then ask you to go toss a Faded Crystal into the gorge in Xarcabard, and bring back a Glowstone, as she thinks that the lighting is the root of the problem.

Prepare yourself for your journey, then grab any type of crystal that you don't need. Most will choose either a Water or Earth crystal, as they're the cheapest. Travel to *ANY* crag (Holla, Mea, or Dem) or any telepoint crystal (Altepa, Vahzl, Yhoat) and trade the crystal that you have chosen to the telepoint crystal. The message "The crystal was drained of all energy." will be displayed and you will receive a Faded Crystal. This is the easiest part of the journey, and it's rocky from here out.

I'm assuming that you have never been to Xarcabard, as most people this level will have not. To get there you travel through the Ranguemont Pass, through Beaucedine Glacier, and inside the glacier go northwest towards Xarcabard. Obviously, having a map helps and the Northern Regions map is really easy to get (See "Her Majesty's Garden," Chateau d'Oraguille).

Welcome to Xarcabard, one of the most beautifully designed places of the game. The 'Northern Lights' you see here are just icing on the cake. However, it's just as deadly as it is pretty to look at, so be warned. Expect Demons, Dragons (Yes, I said Dragons), Ahrimans, Evil Weapons, Skeletons, and many other high levels monsters that will give you a run for your money. This won't be a cakewalk, so come prepared.

You need to head west to E-8. Whether or not you have your map, you really only have to head west. You want to be on the middle of the west side of E-8 (i.e. middle of the left side of the box on the map). There are two "???" here, and the one that's inside the gorge surrounded by the lights is the one you want. You do not want the one that's on a cliff with the torch.

Try to clear out the surrounding demons, and trade the Faded Rock to the "???" and a Chaos Elemental will appear. It is a Light Elemental based NM, so most Black Magic spells will extreme damage to it. It is actually the easiest fight you will engage in while you are in Xarcabard. However, if you call upon it and run, it will eventually go back into the gorge and you will need another Faded Crystal to call upon it again.

Once the fight is over the monster will drop a Glowstone. Make sure everyone that's not here on BLM AF1 passes. Get the Glowstone then go back to Windurst Walls. Enter Heaven's Tower and approach Chumimi again. Trade the Glowstone to Chumimi and you will be thanked for your service. Chumimi will say that Shantotto left the Casting Wand for you, though she probably wants you to do something else for her.

Congratulations on BLM AF1! It's funny listening to ignorant people say how 'useless' this is. I prefer this over the staves that give a small amount to INT and MND and don't find +20 to MP by any means useless. It's all a matter of how you wish to play. Personally, I'd rather have the Casting Wand and a Nymph Shield over any staff, but it's all up to the person.

Very nice guide, i think i shall use this as the one at the top isnt exactly helpful :P
and btw staffs give +hp and MP normally, its the wands which boost int and mnd, imo +5int and +5mnd with a shield is better htan 20mp with a shield, 20 mp isnt enough for a dmg spell, and im never in the position where an extra 20 mp wuld save me, but thats just my opinion
RE: Look here.
# Feb 21 2004 at 1:32 PM Rating: Default
Depends on how you play.

I use Apple Pies +1, so that's +50 MP everytime I level. That's more than enough for a damage spell. I've tried using a Rose Wand and the damage change is almost miniscule, so I stuck with the casting wand.

But, it's in how you want to play, so there really is no wrong or useless equipment.
RE: Look here.
# Feb 21 2004 at 1:32 PM Rating: Default
*correction

The pies and the wand give me 50 together. "When I level" just means when I head out to actively level, not I get that much every level :)

You need the specific job to that specific level. This requires several HIGH level people. Level 47s and 51's in the party werent really able to do much against the mobs we were up against. Luckily, we had 2 level 60's helping us out. I highly suggest you put this quest off until you're at LEAST level 52 and can do AF2 after this one is done.

I don't really agree. I did this with a full party of lvl 48-49 and we were just fine. The demons only conned tough to me at 49 and we had our way with them with our full group. We ran through 5-6 without any downtime, healed, then killed the chaos elemental. that took about 30-45 seconds and then we took 2 more demon pawns, medded and warped out.
