Summary

The cause of the star trees' poor growth seems to lie in the Toraimarai Canal. First, bring some silk cloth to Professor Koru-Moru so he can improve his magic doll. Then take the magic doll into the Toraimarai Canal to carry out an inspection.

Walkthrough

After getting a cutscene from Chumimi in the basement of Heaven's Tower, you must trade a Silk Cloth to Koru-Moru in Windurst Walls. Then, return to Chumimi for another cutscene, and she will give you a Sluice Surveyor Mk. I.

Next, go to Toraimarai Canal.

Once in Toraimarai Canal, head to H-6 and investigate a ???. Then head to the ??? at I-9. Investigate that ??? once, and then use Manafont and investigate it again while Manafont is active. You should receive a cutscene telling you to head northeast.

Head northeast to the circular room at J-8, and investigate the ??? there to pop the notorious monster Magic Sludge. Kill the monster to receive your final cutscene before heading back to Windurst. The Magic Sludge must be killed once for every black mage in the party or alliance that is doing the quest.

Return to Heaven's Tower and talk to Chumimi to receive your Wizard's Petasos.

We had an odd setup but god did it work well!

alliance consisting of 2 blm's and 6 pld's.

We built TP, spawned the NM then all used fully loaded spirits within's on it at once. It was dead in seconds. It has about 3k HP so 6 pallies can take it out.

I go to the ??? in (H-6) the doll absorbs magic and makes some beeping noise...I go to (I-9) and the doll alerts me "but I cannot investigate further" and I thought that might be normal so I used manafont and checked it and nothing happens, how am I supposed to do this? and what is "it will need to check in the same wording the doll say's it in (something about being drained)" supposed to mean?

Check the one at (H-6) a second time, you need to get a cutscene, I believe I had to examine it twice. then you head to (I-9) examine, then cutscene, manafont, examine and 3rd cutscene.

Its the way through the "Gate of Earth" in the central Horutoto Ruins area. Past the 3 Mage Door, there is a room with gates for each element.

This information is wrong wrong wrong. Correction have been sent and this quest is NOT updated. This information is WRONG WRONG WRONG.

You examine the ??? at H-7, BUT DO NOT ACTIVATE MANAFONT!!!!!!!!!!

You examine the ??? at I-9 and THEN activate manafont. This is twice now my party got screwed by this information, because they consulted the Allakazham quest information instead of listening to those that knew. Do NOT follow the quest walk-thru as above without payig attention to all of the information..

Looks like it was fixed on April 20th. Omencat's post and the writeup both appear to be correct now.

Well the information at the top still says the first ??? is at H-6, but OmenCat was right, it is at H-7. Hope this helps

Ok, here's the dealy'o' yo'.

There are 3 seperate ???'s that are needed for this. FIRST: is at H-6, fairly close to entrance, you check it and should get a cut-scene where the doll absorbs the magic, and it will need to check in the same wording the doll say's it in (something about being drained)
SECOND: is at I-9, little bit of walking around sneaked but it's not too hard to find, once you get there check it once for the first cut-scene, the doll will say that he needs you to use your BLM powers and cut-scene will end, use Manafont and check it again, it will say "Your Manafont has activated the Absorbtion process" (or something like that), then cut-scene will tell you to walk northeast and do so once everyone has done what they need up to this point, it's a fairly easy path to follow just head NE and you know you took the right path b/c if you went too far you'll end up at H-6 but on the other side of the first ???.

For the NM fight you only need to actually fight it one time, for however many BLM's there are each one spawn's it WITH sneak on (no need to clear the room yet, wait till last BLM is ready to spawn it), and just let them ALL despawn except for the last person's, that one you need to fight and kill then you check the ??? again and all BLM's that have done all procedures thus-far can check it for the final cut-scene that tells you to go back to Windurst. Once all have checked and got the cut-scene head back to Heavens tower and you will recieve the final cut-scene for your AF hat. You will also be told to talk to Kumimi in Heaven's Tower, she is near the Star Sybal door, and upon talking to her you recieve a Key item called Key to Gate of Earth, and are told it is in the Central entrance to the Hor. Ruin's... idk what this is for yet as I have checked my log and have the quest as completed so when I get it done I'll try to post a link or something of the quest or item or w/e this is about.

I've already sent this correction, but to save you all time, without reading everyones reply;

You must examine the ??? at H-7 then go to I-9 and examine that one, then Activate Manafont, then examine the ??? at I-9 a second time, then it's time to move to the spawn point, checking it with sneak you can avoid agro from mobs in the area and spawn the mob, pulling it to the tunnel to fight.

We just spent 4 hr's doing this, reason being: People didnt listen to the leader of the alliance when he told them not to wonder, we spent hours raising dead bodies of those who didnt and got agro, it would never seem to fail, they would get raised, be running back and get agro, and they died again, we had almost 2 full parties to start out, but the leader decided to call it off, so we disbanned. Besides that fun, we had all the BLM go to H-7 and examine the ???, The guide said to activate manafont at this point so we all did, nothing new "The magic has already been drained..." We knew something was up... I know allakzaham has been wrong before, so I came to check this for myself, and sure enough people have wrote it up before, there are 3 ???'s not 2 and Alla had missed it, well, that sucks for us, we weren't going to get any AF(or so we thought) however, a few other BLM had been there before and had someone walk them to the ??? all they needed was the NM, but they didnt know about the manafont deal either.. Either way, after the deaths we escaped.

Later on I heard they were going to try it with less members and they asked if I wanted to come along(my dad being a 75 WHM, they needed his help more then mine) so we headed back down, found the ??? at I-9 and reactivated Manafont (yeah it was 2 hrs later) and got the cutscenes, on to the NM.

The PT set up was this: 65 BLM, 58 BLM, 75 PLD, 61 NIN, 75 WHM Second PT: 58 BLM, 58 BLM(me)

Each BLM spawned the NM and we let it despawn.
there is a time limit between each spawn, so you'll have to wait to respawn it, about 3 min this is only nessicary to obtain the cutscene, if you have done it before, but didnt kill the NM you dont have to spawn it. We killed the NM with realitive ease, the PLD had saved up 300% TP from clearing the area a few times between spawns, so he unloaded a 500+ Damage Spirits Within on the NM to head out, the NM was fairly easy, it was a slow kill however, as all elementals are our Burst were only doing 200 damage on the mob, we each cast a few AM as we rested inbetween, casting II and III level spells as well, aspir didnt do that great as well as drain. the only problem we had was MP, because of the lack of refreshers, the PLD(Taru Uberness) ran out of MP when the mob was 6/8 dead, and the WHM(My old man, Taru as well) just cured him for the rest of the time, in the end the only one with MP was the WHM and he had about 100. I wouldnt call it a close call by any means, but its a fairly simple battle, I would suggest a PLD and a couple of RDM to melee and get 300 TP before hand, a few solid Spirits Within would put him down to less then half health in seconds. After all 300TP Spirits Within= 1/2 your current health in damage, if you have a lvl 75 PLD and a few HL RDM you'll get roughly 1500 damage, sounds easy to me.

Just about having 5 other lvl 70+ ppl will easily take down this NM. All in all it took about 1.5 hrs to complete.

how i beat it:

so we had basically 10 blm's, and rdm, whm, and brd. we had a few more, but they left when we died before even getting through all the ???'s. I already had mine from my last failed attempt. Oh maybe I should mention how that went.

So there was this **** named Shinobi. There was this other **** too, but i forgot his name. Basically **** number 2 told **** number one that he'd pay for a tank. Then we finally got there, he got his stuff done so he could get his hat, and then told the group that he dind't want to pay and that everyone in teh group had to pay instead. so the Shinobi got all pissed b/c the group hadn't agreed to this before and so didn't want to do it, so Shinobi MPK'd us all. party broke up, end of story.

This time we all took turns spawning the thing and waited for it to despawn, took forever. We were planning on having blm/smn carby pull, brd sleep, and then we all AM at the same time. Well even though the bard had over 100 CHR, it wouldn't sleep. then it sleepga'd all of us. then most of us died though a few escaped out. Ok that's when my whm and rdm friends joined us. we all got R2's and got back to the NM spawn point.

this time we cleared out hte hallway, rested up, cleared out hte room (girtab last since it respanws rather quickly), rested up. everyone put sneak up and then we spawned it. Everyone started casting AM at the same time. Well not at exactrly the same time, which proved to be good. Hate keep moving everywhere an nobdy really got hit more than once. I'm not sure how many AM's everyone got off, but I did 4 (manafont halfway through of course). I think i did 4, though it might have died before the last went off. Anyway it died and we all got our last cutscene. So taht worked out really nice.

you do NOT have to be on rank 8 to get the key for the mage door. just have to complete Written in the Stars mission first then trade rolanberry in heaven's tower. i got the key item for the mage door at rank 5-1

To those that say you have to be on Mission 8 to key the key for the door, that is totally incorrect. I got this key item when i was rank 5-1. You just have to complete the Written in the Stars mission once that asks you to go and open the door. I want to say its Mission 3-2 but not posative. After that is complete, go back to heaven's tower, trade rolanberry and there u should have it^^

You just have to complete the Written in the Stars mission once that asks you to go and open the door. I want to say its Mission 3-2 but not posative. After fighting and winning against Fenrir, several people in our party and one other LS memeber needed to finish this Blm AF. So, our party was: War75/nin, Whm75/smn, Blm75/whm (me), and 3 Blm's in their 50's.

After wandering around the canals for the ???'s we got to the NM fight area. We popped and waited for the despawn twice. Cleared the room and popped it for the 3rd time.

I was a bit concerned that we didn't have enough people since the Magic Sludge is very resistant to both melee and magic, but it wsan't a problem for our party. Previously I had always gone in an alliance of people in the 50's to 60's

My 300% tp Full Swing did about 57 damage. Thunder IV and Blizzard IV did around 250-260 each.

Investigate the <???> on a wall around (H-7), then investigate <???> around (I-9) first WITHOUT manafont then again WITH manafont.
Both of these are on the wall, near metal bars, on the upper walkway level, not in the water. Though you have to go down to the water level and then come back up to get to the second ???.
Now, head to the circular room at (J-8), and investigate the <???> there to spawn An NM Magic Sludge. Defeat him and investigate the <???> again.

You can do everything up to and including poping the NM as prequest by your self. If you are poping it multiple times with other BLM, you will have to wait for it to despawn and wait some more before you can investigate again.

I'm sorry, I was a little tired that night and I somehow found another ??? at I-9. I think there are more than one. Manafont at the one with the cutscene that say "The power of a black mage is needed" for the last line, and you'll be fine.

Please rate down my other post so that people don't get confused.

How did you fail? Did you fail to pop the NM at the last <???>? Did you fail to defeat it and reinvestigate? Every other sources say there are 3 <???>'s except the original.

If you dont delieve me, go read the BLM AF guide in the BLM forum.

you can simply finish the written in the stars mission by buying 3 rusty daggers, starting the written in the stars mission, and trading it to the girl.

Then after it's complete run back 1 floor down to kupipi and trade the rolanberry.

There are 2 entrances into the canal.

One entrance is through windhurst walls. You must have completed the quests dajagr stated above to be able to gain access this way. (this is what I did)

Other entrance is through the Ruins in Sarutabaruta, through the 3 mage door. Kupipi is supposed to give you clearance to open this door solo if you trade her a rolanberry. (this didn't work for me, hence why I tried the other way)

I have not done the af yet. Today I went to try to hit all the ??? spots solo, so I wouldn't slow down the people I get to help me, and tried to follow the instructions posted in the link above in XMobomodiboX's post, but either I messed up and got lost or the directions are not accurate. I'll try again later this evening, hopefully it was just me.

If anyone has any other advice for me on fighting this nm please, all comments are welcome.

In the area where you pop him nothing will aggro*. Pop it, Gravity, Poison II and Dia 2 it. Run him around the lower (water) area of the square of that map re-applying Dia and Poison as necessary.

Remember he will build up an immunity to Gravity so use it sparingly. If he builds up a huge resistance it will go away with time so run a few more laps without doing anything to let the resistance go away some.

I did try to solo using Spirits Within but he hit too fast and too hard. Also, he would Aspir and Drain repeatedly. I was out of MP with 7 minutes to go until my second Convert so I don't think you have a shot unless you sub NIN. He is very susceptable to Paralyze and Slow however.

* - Except the scorpion by the final ???

Do not use the quest information above it is wrong.
Has the correct info. Turns out there are 3 ??? and you DO NOT need to manafont on the first ???. Its the second ??? that requires a manafont. We found this out the hard way and ended up having to wait for an hour to get another manafont to check it ><.

The cold bone and the warm egg free up the "nothing matters" quest which may be blocking the start of "The Root of the Problem" quest (AF1-3 Wizard's Petasos (hat)). Once old Koru-Moru is locked into something you cannot get him to do anything else. The 50,000 gil price tag for the cold bone might have something to do with that quest locking and unlocking potential, for those who want their AF hat. What category at the AH is the cold bone in?

I would like to clear somthing up.
1. if you are doing the BLM af3 and you go into Torm Canal solo and investigate the ??? at H-7 and I-9 then join the NM hunting party when you complete the AF3 quest you will be given the earthen charm without trading a rolanberry......

I just wandered inside the zone for the 2 ??? mentioned (at H-7 and I-9). BOTH of them are on 1st map (the same map as you entered Toraimarai Canal from Inner Horutoto Ruins).

NOTE: As a rule of thumb, having the map is suggested. Map of Toraimarai Canal can be obtained thru an easy quest in Mhaura.

To get to H-7 (1st ???), it is easy with map, or keep hug to the wall on your left hand side. No need to walk in the canal down there. The ??? at H-7 should have a jelly/slime guarding there. A sneak will be ok.

To get to I-9 (2nd ???), you probably need to first go down the canal (at least I did this way). The staircase is at H-7, west side of the grid. This staircase can be reached by crossing a bridge located between zone entrance and the 1st ??? spot, such that you can reach the west side of H-7.
Suppose now you are walking along the canal (with water, and pugil-like fish Makara, etc), now go to J-9. This grid has a staircase allow you to go up to the dry pavement again.

Once you're on dry pavement again, you can reach I-9 easily and keep Tab'ing until you see 2nd ???. This ??? is again guarded by a jelly/slime, and sneak will keep you safe. There is NO NEED TO ACTIVATE MANAFONT YET. Check this 2nd ??? first, you'll see cutscene. After this cutscene, activate Manafont and click on ??? again for another cutscene.

Lastly, the room with elemental NM is at J-8, and this J-8 is on SAME MAP as you come in. If you have map, you should notice a circular room like a deadend at J-8. There is the room which spawn NM. The room is guarded by 4 skeletons, but since sneak is good enough, you can go inside the room, click on ???, watch the cutscene, and the NM will spawn. The NM will NOT attack you right away. You can always backup and wait for it the despawn (in case if multiple BLM in same AF quest and each of them need to spawn the NM), or buff up yourself. Do not cast too close to it otherwise it will magic aggro you.

Good luck to you and to me, coz I am also waiting for someone to help on killing this NM as well.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have done this twice now. Both times I did not go down the stairs at all.

The first ??? can be found by simply staying on the left side of the ledge until you come to the ??? at H7 by a sludge.

The second ??? can be found by crossing over the bridge as he mentioned. However, instead of going down the stairs, simply stay right. You'll go through many turns, but just stay right. Eventually you'll come to a dead end. A ??? will be there (usually also a treasure coffer). This is at I9.

And again, it is not necessary to go downstairs for J8, where the fight is.
