I've been farming Yag necklaces lately, because I want this quest. (Just unlocked NIN last night ^^d) I've turned in 64 to... The Mithra in windurst, don't remember the name. I was thinking about 200 necklaces would do it. Is that right?

In-Game TextDescriptionLaisrean asks you to fetch an item for him in Sea Serpent Grotto. Make sure you have your Silver beastcoin, then enter the Sea Serpent Grotto from Yhutanga Jungle. Take every left you come to. Eventually you will get to an Ornamented Door. That means you're going the right way. Take a left when you get to the door. Continue down this path and take the next left you find. You will arrive at a room with a large puddle and a waterfall. Continue moving straight until you find an unmarked door. Examine this door until you get the message, "You see some silver shavings near the indent on this wall." Trade your silver beastcoin to open the door. You will be greeted by some pugils when you open the door. Move forward without falling off of any ledges. When you arrive in the room at (H-8), hop off the ledge. Move through this path. You will get to a room identical to the one you just fell from. Keep going forward and you will arrive at the unmarked door to the treasure room. Examine the ??? to recieve the Sea Serpent Statue. I did the Boyahda Moss quest enough times to get the teleport scrolls. I don't remember how many times, but it was at least 10-12. I then did Mihgo's Amigo 12 times. I checked my rice ball price next time I was in Jueno and it was 169. I figured I had a long way to go, so I repeated Mihgo's Amigo another 30+ times. I returned to Jueno and was quite irritated to find that the rice ball price had only dropped to 160. I went to Norg anyway, armed with 10 Rusty Subligars and 10 Rusty Leggings. When I got there, Keal gave me the Tonko: Ichi quest right away. My fame was "Wait I remeber you was it Mih... no Cumnan". I did both the rusty quests and my fame didn't change. I did the Tonko: Ichi quest and my fame changed to "Heard your name lots..". I got this quest with no further work. I'm not sure if I could have gotten initially, as I planned on getting all the scrolls anyway. I am on the Phoenix server btw. Rank 3 Windy.

I was lvling my nin so i could sub it and get shadows and such... anyway i check Rice Balls and they were 156... i was thinking hey.... Lvl 4 w00t! But when i arrived to norg i only had lvl 3, so said the Fame teller... me? i was kinda mad, but i was there so i decided to go and do Tonko: Ichi. After about 5-10 min i came back to find i had lvl 4 fame after Tonko! If thats not EXTREME luck then i dont know what is..
I think the Norg Fame/Selbina's Boyahda Moss Quest are Irrelevant because i did the Moss Quest with about 12-14 Stacks(if not more) and still only had to do the Zinc Ore quest in bastok about 25-30 times to get enough fame to do Utsusemi and Tonko, my Rice Ball Price is 156 and i got both quests... i just wish i didnt die 6 times with my 20RDM lol.... i used it to save money instead of buying Silent Oils... other than sneak wearing too fast and every thing killing me with 1-2 hits this was an easy quest BIG THANKS to Jamesxi and Theya for helping, u guys rock!!

Just doing the necklaces takes more than 200 to get utsusemi even with doing tonko first. Don't know the exact number but I was always told 200 is the key. I did this long ago on my main and need them now to lvl nin. turned in exactly 200 did tonko and nothing .

Here is my humble experience about getting Utsusemi: Ichi.
First of as you know you need level 4 fame, to do the Utsusemi: Ichi quest.
Fame is the killer (downtime) if you don’t have it you need to do some "hard work" to get it.
You properly already know about how to raise fame in Norg, if not check out this link.

um, i first did this quest about 2 weeks ago, i used the guide posted above, only thing wrong was mythril coin. but I knew you needed a silver coin already because I do what I like to call "smart" and ask people who have done it what, if any items do you need to do this quest.

Thanks:) I got enough fame for Tonko but not Utsusemi. But I was told once I do Tonko I'll be able to get Utsusemi. All I did was trade about 120 Necklaces and 30-40 zinc ores. I grew tired of farming the necklaces. Now I'm just waiting for Rank 6 or someone to help me do it ha. I lack a guide/printer/map so I'm outta luck. Oh well, gives me time to farm and make some gil.

first, i traded 150-200 yagudo necklaces to the cat burglar in Windurst. then, i went to Lower Jeuno and checked the price of rice balls from an NPC immediately inside the building near the 1st AH window coming from MH. i had been told to wait until the price was set at 155 or less before tyring to get ichi quest. then, i went to Norg and completed the rusty subligar quest and rusty legging quest, which were easy 'cause i just bought em all off of AH. after all that i had enough fame for the quest.

I always keep hearing that you need to turn in 120 zinc ores/necklaces to specific npcs to activate this quest. It seems as though you need to finish about 30 tenshodo quests. I did 35-40ish number of quests (can't remember, been a long time >.<) to get my scroll as well as the other ninjitsu spells.

I helped my friend Lennei the other day w/ Utsusemi quest... he already had fame. I used the tutorial on this website http://www.zebraflood.com/ninja/ninjutsu.html ... 21k, 1300 xp loss, and 3 hours later it was done! (All the xp loss was from gettin to Norg) I used about 16 silent oils, this was because recasting oils w/ 2 people is not easy. Although if i was to do quest solo it could be done in 30 min from Norg, and only about 4-6 oils.
P.S. the tutorial is very well written, i had no problems with directions.

this quest is the most annoying quest speant 35k on ore and rice ball was 156 and still couldent get it.

Whoever said that the rice ball prices are unreliable is completely correct. After doing many yag necklace runs (didn't count, sorry), joining the Tenshodo, unlocking ninja, and starting (but not completing) the samurai flag quest, my rice ball price was at 158. I decided to head to Norg anyway. To my surprise, I activated all of the NIN scroll quests (Tonko, Utsusemi, Kurayami, Hojo, and Dokumori) except Jubaku from Shivivi. The rice balls may give you a hint about how much fame you have, but the bestway to see if you can get Utsusemi is to make a trip to Norg and talk to Laisrean directly.

i turned in 100 necklaces in windy and decided to check my fame where it should be checked (in norg) and i had moderate fame...but not enough to get the quest...did all 4 NIN scroll quests available and got the quest.
The only accurate place to check your Norg fame is in Norg. In area H-8 of Norg, there is an NPC named Vaultimand that will tell you your fame. If he says "Hear yer name lots 'round these parts lately" then u have enough fame for the quest.

Well... first off, I wanna say that no one should rely on the famous "rice ball price" to gauge their fame in Norg. The Neptune's Spire shop is considered a guild (much like Silver Owl in Port Bastok and all the other shop keeps down in the Tenshodo Headquarters in Lower Jeuno), and therefore rice ball prices fluctuate depending on how many were bought the previous Vana'diel day. So using your rice balls to gauge your fame isn't very reliable.
I know this because I'm trying to get this quest and I've traded I don't know how many zinc ores to Talib, plus I've done the Tonko: Ichi and Dokumori: Ichi quests, gotten the Samurai advanced job as well as done several other things that I can't remember at the moment (I apollogize, I'm still half-asleep) and I have yet to recieve the go-ahead on this quest.

Hey all, turned in 140 necklaces (painstakingly i might add) and went to Jeuno to Neptunes Spires. Checked price of rice balls and it said 158. After about 5 minutes of yelling, swearing, and throwing my ps2 controller around (have tried this mission many times, but no success to get it) i decided that since i was levelling Samurai as well, might as well go to Norg and buy new gear. Airship, choco'd to norg, bought level 12 sam sword, and decided to talk to the quest npc. To my shock, i got the quest. My strategy guide by Brady games states N-12 for the room. I wandered around lost in the grotto for a bit (47blm/23whm so i was sneaked) and stumbled upon the room. Got the statue, cutscene, then a quick warp back to Norg. My suggestion to anyone wanting to do this quest or any others that do not require a NM....level whm to at least 15 for sub, or 20 without sub....sneak helps for this quest alot...and level to 25 for other quests (invis/sneak)...glad i actually took time to lvl whm.
BTW: Strategy guide was very very very wrong...not the first time tho...

Quest starter = Laisrean in Norg at (H-8)
(This assumes you already have the quest active, this is just how to find your way thru Sea Serpent Grotto.)
(This also assumes the typical knowledge of how to get to Norg from Kazham.)
Everything in Sea Serpent Grotto aggros to sound. Keep sneak up at all times, and if you need to rest for mp, invis yourself as well, as things aggro to healing if you don't.
---Directions---
Enter the Grotto from Yuhtunga Jungle.
Stay to the left side, follow the left wall.
You will go down steps at K-7 (you can't go back up them)
Stay to left and go into the first tunnel on you left.
You'll be facing a Ornamented door located at J-10, take a left at it and countinue on a downward slope.
Stay to your left, go into the first tunnel.
Now down slope again, switch to following the right side.
You will go past some waterfalls, and find the silver beastman coin door at N-14.
Go thru door with your silver beastman coin (talk to it about 6 times then trade the coin to it, you don't lose the coin.)
Follow the right wall, skip the tunnel that heads to the right (it just dead ends)
Coninute following the right wall, fall down the cliff at H-8 and following the right wall till the door at H-5
There is a Sea Bronze inside, so keep sneak up.
(IT to me at lvl 40)
Tab around and find the ??? talk to it, and go thru the cutscene.
A Treasure chest also spawns in the back of this room (I wish I had a key, I could have gotten a map).
There is also a NPC Sahagin named 'Hurr the Betrayer' in the back of this same room.
Then I suggest warping back out (home point in Norg)
If you can't warp out... (I think these directions are correct I didn't double check exactly (I used them), if you find any errors I will fix it, or go back and check for myself)

Before heading out to Norg I purchased 10 Rusty Subligars and 10 Rusty Leggings from the AH. Upon arrival I completed the rusty quests and received both scroll quests without question.
Note: Not once did I check the rice ball prices in Jueno so I wouldn't be able to say what they were before the quests were acquired.

I tried this quest after printing this guide. I tried for hours trying to figure it out, wasting 80k on silent oils, and prism powders + Tele-Yhoat. I couldn't check back because I didn't have computer access at the time, so I kept trying. 80k was all I had at the time, so I ended up broke AND without utsusemi because if this false guide. Thanks.

I expect to be taking a few LS members through this quest over the weekend. I will endeavor to write better directions. For one thing, the "left/right" is almost MEANINGLESS and really needs compass directions to keep you moving correctly.

You can still use a Silver Beastcoin to open the no named door. At least, that's what I did today. Why was the quest info even updated? :O

surprisingly i got the quest with only 60 necklaces/ and bout 50 ores.. i was surprised that i got the utsusemi and i tried to get the leviathan quest and to my amazment i got it... my riceballs were 155..i spent 12k on a stack of oils used about 8 of em for utsusemi and tonko together and i died a few timmes... took me about an hour cuz it was going real slow until i looked on here and i got it in about 5 min from when i left norg cuz i had just died (included the time of oil reuse) just goto http://www.zebraflood.com/ninja/ninjutsu.html real nice site...

This is what I did:
Completed the Zinc Ore Quest one time.
Did the Necklace Quest 49 times (196 Necklaces)
Price of Rice Ball in Jeuno was 155 Gil, Fame Level 4, but I couldn't get Utsusemi Quest.
Did the Necklace Quest 7 more times (224 Necklaces in total), Fame Level 5 - and got the quest.
I farmed with RNG35/THF16, pretty fast, got 28 Necklaces in 1 hour including walking back. And yes, Giddeus was kinda packed with Necklace-Farmers.
