Summary

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 and A Boy's Dream - PLD AF2 to begin this quest.

Start out by heading to Chateau d'Oraguille and go to Prince Trion's chambers.

After the cutscene, you need to head to M-7 in Southern San d'Oria and talk to Vemalpeau, who lives in a small house. Then, head to the Lion Spring's Tavern and talk to Najjar. Next, head to Count Caffaule's Manor at C-6 and talk to Ullassa. Ullassa will tell you about an item called Mique's Paintbrush.

Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and obtain a Zvahl Coffer Key. The following monsters drop coffer keys: Ahriman, Doom Demon, Arch Demon, Blood Demon and Abyssal Demon.

Next, find a coffer. All eight spawn points where coffers can appear are located on the third map. The spawn points are at J-10, F-10, F-6, J-6, G-8 and H-8. Trade your key to the coffer to receive the the Mique's Paintbrush.

Next, head back to Southern San d'Oria and talk to Vemalpeau again. He will tell you that all of his son's belongings are still in his room upstairs. Head upstairs and investigate the painting on the wall. You will get an option to look at a strange letter, so do so.

Once you have the letter, head to the weapon shop at K-7 and talk to Exoroche. He will tell you that you need to dip the letter on a well in Davoi to have the ink appear. At this point you are now ready to head to Davoi.

Once in Davoi, make your way to the village well at G-9. Clear all of the orcs from around the well, saving TP. Click on the well to spawn two NM orcs, One-Eyed Gwajboj and Three-Eyed Prozpuz. When you kill them, an item called a Well Weight will drop. Trade the item to the well for a cutscene.

Return to Northern San d'Oria and speak with Ailbeche. He talks about a lake in Jugner Forest. Now go to Jugner Forest and head to the Maiden's Spring which is located in E-6 of the map. Once you approach the well, you will get a really cool cutscene in which most of the storyline from the quests will wrap up.

After the cutscene, head back to San d'Oria and go to Prince Trion's Chamber in Chateau d'Oraguille to get your Gallant Surcoat.

Coffer key

Tonight I finally found a party going to Castle Zvahl for a key hunt. There were two people (PLD and THF) who needed the key besides me, so I told them they could have the first two drops. Two keys drop, and the 2 BLM's disband shortly thereafter. With no escape/warp we had back to jeuno to regroup. The 66SAM still needs his testimony and I need my key. I convince a friend of mine 72RDM to come along (she wants the Demon Pen drop for a quest). We grab a 60DRK, 63WHM, and a 60THF and head out. After killing for about an hour a total of FIVE keys dropped. They were dropping every other fight for awhile it was ridiculous. The THF ran ahead and popped the coffer before I could get to it though. Everyone warped and me and my RDM friend stayed to coffer hunt. After running around the castle for about half an hour we find the coffer. Now I just need to kill those pesky orcs and I will finally have my Surcoat.
Overall the key drop rate here is WAY better than any other PLD AF coffer location by far. I will say having a high lvl tank is ideal since the Demons hit a lvl 60PLD pretty hard (especially those DRK Demons).

I would slap that thf for wasting peoples time getting a key, theres a reason why thf's are able to pick chests and coffers

Just last night finished the Orc NM battle in Davoi. This battle is nowhere near as hard as people claim it is. We killed the orcs 4 times (for all four PLDs in the party). We only had one lvl 70 PLD and the rest of the people were between 55-65 roughly. I love walking around in my brand new Gallant Surcoat.

If more than one PLD needing this is in the alliance fighting these orc's do the orc's drop more than one weight?

No. If u have lets say 4 PLD who need the weight, u have to kill the orcs a number of 4 times for all four of them to get the weight.

I just got the zvahl coffer key, last night after about 3 hours. Everybody in the first party I was in disbanded with no keys and they left. A party that was there for 2 Whine cellar keys let me join, and we got 2 coffer keys and 2 whine keys in about 15 or 20 min. The first party had no thf or /thf and the second had at least a war/thf. The mages were all /anon, so I don't know if any of them had subbed thf for the keys or not. Definately take a thf for this one. I also recommend a DRK or BLM because ahrimans and demons use Flare, Flood, Freeze, and Burst. I usually got off a shield bash and a flat blade in time to stop it, but it could have been pretty nasty.

I had done the Davoi part with another pld that already had the coffer part done. There were only 7 of us. I don't know everybody's lvl, but there was a 75 pld and a 73 drk in the group. I didn't even get there for the first fight, so 6 people killed them.

You can still get the well weight if you end up fighting the orcs before the coffer, you just can't use it until after you do the zvahl part.

This AF is hell, the coffer key/drop wasn't too bad but a loser PLD who begged me to let him join got his key before me then logged. He came on about 30mins later, tried to run around the corner without us noticing him then just warps (dumbass lorenzzo). I finally got my key and the SAM helping me got his testimony so I was glad (grats Xenp). So I find the coffer and that's all good, but I spent the last two days shouting for help. COULD NOT GET MORE THAN 2 PEOPLE!! It sucks having to coordinate such a huge alliance, very difficult.

this was by far the easiest coffer key (three keys needed) hunt yet. went into the castle with 9 ppl 3 of them pld (including me) the highest was a 75mnk. the first kill a key dropped, and i got out looted. i said to myself there is no way another will drop within the next couple of hours. within the next few kills another dropped, got out looted again. so i prepared myself for ppl leaving before i got my key. killed about five more mobs and a key dropped, /hurray!!!!!

the coffer hunt was pretty cool too! i figured something out while running around this place... there are four different drop points, and there are four different mobs (goblins, yags, quads, demons), so i used the mobs as a landmarks per say. so when i dropped off and searched the room and the coffer wasnt there. i knew not to go back to that same area.

I'm a lvl 51 PLD, and I was running through Jeuno when I heard somebody shouting for help with the last fight. I offered my services, knowing that I wouldn't be all that useful. But they took me on, and as we had 17 ppl at that point, went over to Davoi. We were also there for some BRD AF gear, and some MNK AF gear. One of our healers was also lv 51, so I didn't feel too runty. =)

We made it to the well with no troubles, and cleared out the orcs. As for the fight itself, it went smoothly except for one thing. The RNG NM opened with some 1500dmg attack. Our lv 60 PLD (who triggered the fight) dropped like a rock.
I stepped in and took on the PLD NM, while our DDs and our lv 70something PLD took on the RNG. Barring that one death, not a problem at all. Happily, I won the first lot, and my Well Weight is safely tucked away in my MH now.
We had 3 PLDs who needed it (including myself), so we waited for weakness to wear off, and started the process again. Again the RNG opened with sick dmg, but this time our PLD had used Defender/Sentinel, and lived. Some quick healing, and the NMs went down in no time.
Wash, rinse, repeat and we got our third Well Weight with no trouble.

The BRD was no trouble at all, and the MNK had forgotten to activate whatever he needed to (something involving a 'Tent Flap'), so we never got him set up.

I headed back to Sandy, activated the quest, and now am waiting to get some more levels to begin my key hunt. Should be fun =)

It says "This Quest requires Zilart" what does that mean?
RE: ?
# Nov 22 2004 at 10:58 PM Rating: Decent
Most quests that say "This quest requires Zilart" refers the fact that the Rise of the Zilart expansion pack is needed to complete the quest. However I don't see why this particular quest needs the expansion pack. I may have missed it, but I didn't see any Zilart area's that you need to go to.

I'm guessing the main reason why this quest requires Zilart is because the AFs quest were implemented after the release of the Rise of the Zilart expansion. Whether or not it involves Zilart areas or not probably doesn't matter since some AFs for other jobs require you to go into Zilart areas. It wouldn't be very fair if some jobs wouldn't have to buy the Zilart expansion yet still be able to get their AFs, although now it's probably some kind of a non-issue since the Zilart expansion is usually bundled with the original game in both North America and Europe... This would probably apply only to Japanese who bought the original game 2 years ago but not the Zilart expansion, and frankly speaking, I can't imagine it to be the case of many people...

Finished this last night. We had 14 people in an alliance with 71 PLD main tank and 13 people from lvl 57-62. I (60 PLD) tanked the PLD orc while everyone else killed the RNG, then they all came over and took care of the the PLD. Didn't have any problems until the second time through when the other orcs in the area started respawning. Luckily we were able to take care of everything with no deaths. It was fun though.

Any help would be appreciated, and if you are another pld lookin up on this, if you bring a few friends then we're almost there. Reward negotiable for high level help!!!

Finally got people to help with this quest (gilgamesh)
It was me and another lvl 61 pld that needed to complete the batte.

We had 5 members @ 70 in part of the alliance and
10 members from 59-61

The fights went fairly easy. the high level tank lost some hp, but between mages and everyone else healing if someone was in trouble or getting low, noone came close to dying.

The hardest part about this quest is getting that many people to help out. We got lucky and none of the high levels wanted to be paid.

Don't remember many of the names that came but a big thanks to Fonewm for helping me out with both parts of the quest

You don't really need 3 alliance pt to fight these 2 NMs anyway just need about 1 pt of 70s... The pt setup was 75 SMN (me) 72 NIN 68 RDM 58 PLD... We fought at the well where that Monastic Caverns zone is...

The first fight we nearly nail those 2 bastards if only I had enough mp for two blood pact and didn't get aggro by other orcs... The second fight we plan to do this...

The pld pop the 2 NMs and I get ready with my avatar to attack the PLD one... We all run to the zone and just when I was about to zone I release the avatar so that pld NM will come after us... Then we zone and wait a little bit til those train run away... Zone out then find that pld NM and pull it back, then start ganking him !
coffer not chest
# Oct 27 2004 at 6:41 PM Rating: Decent
The paintbrush is in a coffer not a chest therefore you need a coffer key. You can take my word for it because I'm a paladin who has done this quest, and therefore I am not speculating. The quest item is in a coffer not a chest.

Just a question (on behalf of my sister's PLD). The sidebar says required items is a chest key. Are you sure this isn't a coffer key like what the guide speaks of? Because my sister picked up a Zvahl Chest Key while they were making their way to fight Dark Spark, and she wants to know if this is what she is looking for, or if she needs the Coffer key and has to come back for this?

Another way to do the NM fight easily is to kite the RNG Orc while everyone else kills the PLD Orc. I kited this sucker without using all my MP and without refresh. I used earth staff, all +DEF gear, and Defender. The RDM's helped by using gravity and bind, and the occational cure III. His ranged attacks did 40-100 damage. I also tanked this guy at lvl 57 with the same gear setup, but I got hit a LOT more.

We had 10 people, my pt was 60mnk/war (me), 64 whm, 64 rng, 64 rdm, 56 thf, and 60 pld. second pt was 66 mnk/war, 56 pld, 58 thf, and 56 whm.

the 66 mnk tanked the pld, while me and my pt killed the ranger. both of us mnk's hit {Hundred Fists}, got off a couple howling fists and dragon kicks, and in no time the rng was dead.

Then i went over to the pld fight, and we killed it off. easy kills, only one "butt clenching moment" when the rng used some jumping thing that took me from 1300 hp to 200 hp. pld tried to cover, and then all of a sudden he was at 200 hp as well. Whm got off a DS+Curaga 3, and we were on our way again.

Moral: Plan well. We had things figured out, buffed up before hand, and built tp on surrounding orcs. No sweat. In fact, My MNK AF legs NM was harder, and we DID have a full alliance for that.

Assembling parties for this quest always seemed tougher than the actual fights themselves.

After finding a 12-person alliance of assorted levels (56-64), we head to Castle Zvahl Baileys. Being the 4th time attempting this, it seemed easier to fight our way to the ledges where the Ahrimans and Demons resided.

We drop down the 2nd highest ledge and kill the Ahriman. Our puller starts to also pull Judicator Demons and other lvl70 assorted demons when we realize that we shouldn't be pulling these. An Ahriman pops while we're fighting a Judicator Demon and our entire party dies. The White Mage manages to cast escape, but only escapes herself because everyone else is dead. She makes her way back to our camp and raises us one by one. We decide to move camp to another circle and drop down to the highest ledge this time.

The first key dropped about an hour into the party, and the THF managed to get it (for his BRD). The second key dropped about 30min later and the BRD got it that time. The third key dropped about 30min after that and another PLD in the party got it then. By this time, everyone was getting tired and speaking this nonsense of leaving. So we decide to fight a few more demons and ahrimans before calling it a night. On the last Ahriman, our final key drops and I finally get my key at 2:30AM EST.

Note: 3 keys dropped from Ahrimans, 1 key dropped from a Blood Demon.

I get D2ed back to Jeuno, thank everyone repeatedly for helping, change my SJ to RDM and Tele-Vazhl back to Castle Zvahl Baileys to find my coffer chest. First, I check each of the 4 corner rooms for the chest. Nothing. Then I try heading into the center room area and almost run directly into the Duke! I immediately turn around and try another entrance into the center area.. And almost run into the Grand Duke! But I did manage to see the coffer chest before running out of that area. Finally, make my way to the right room, drop Invisible and Sneak, open the chest and warp out of there.

3:30AM EST
I'm pretty tired by this point, but figure I could hold out a bit longer and try my luck with Davoi. I start spamming Jeuno for help and manage to get 3/18 people within 10 minutes and think to myself, "Hey, not bad.. maybe I could do this!" It's getting close to 4:00AM EST and I'm starting to get desperate.. So I start offering 5000gil to every single person that does help me. 2 JP players kindly join the party, another PLD60 that just wants to see how the fight goes offers to join, and a RNG52 from my LS offers to help to. 7/18 people and I'm thinking, "Okay, I might have a chance now!"

The 2 JP players head to Davoi in advance and said they'd wait there. I continue spamming Jeuno for another 30min or so. All of the sudden, both of the JP players are dead in Davoi from a high level Orc train. So I decide to race to Davoi to raise them. In the meanwhile, one of the JP players HPs back to Jeuno and leaves the party, while I pick up a BLM58 and RDM62 in Jugner Forest on the way to Davoi. After raising the other JP player, I get an alliance invite from the JP player that left my party earlier, and he has a full party with him!!

I take a look at the member list, and there are some 64s, 60s and a MNK75 in there. So we have 15 people in total now and are ready to take on the 2 NMs. We get to the Village well, clear out all nearby orcs and I spawn the NMs. I start tanking the PLD orc along with a DRK64. The White Mage throws a CureIII or CureIV at me occasionally, but I manage to do a good tanking job while everyone else takes out the RNG orc. The PLD orc has about 1/2 of its HP left by the time everyone kills the RNG orc and we easily take out the PLD orc afterwards. I get the well weight drop and we all get escaped out of Davoi before I can drop the weight into the well for the cutscene. No big deal, though, because I'm almost done.

5:30AM EST
I head back into Davoi with my remaining Prism powders and get the cutscene, warping out right after. Head to N.Sandy to talk with Ailbeche, then race off to Jugner Forest to Maiden's Spring for a cool cutscene, and then choco back to Prince Trion for another cutscene and get my AF Gallant surcoat at 6:02AM EST!

Patience and persistency do pay off!

I spent about 3 hours getting a party together to go key hunting.
I finally got it all together and even had some Lv70+ help.
So we all get ready and make our way to Castle Zvahl Baileys and finally set up camp.
We pull a Demon and are able to take it out relatively fast. Bang, he drops the coffer key.
That's it, then we all D2 home.

>.>

After that I asked my BLM friend to help me look for the Treasure Coffer as he had done this for others many times.
We arrive and the very first place we look the Coffer is there.
Talk about luck eh?

Still waiting to do the Davoi part, let's see how that goes.

Yeah, you need a coffer key, not a chest key. Very big difference. I had both just now and found both the chest and the coffer. The chest gave 6600 gil (to each member of a party of 2) and the coffer gave me Mique's Paintbrush.
