Summary

Follow the "gang whereabouts note" to find the two remaining members of Atarefaunet's band of thieves. Hand each one of them a "counterfeit envelope" and have them sign the forged documents inside.

Walkthrough

Start this quest by talking to Nanaa Mihgo at J-3 in Windurst Woods. After a cutscene, you will receive three key items: Gang Whereabouts Note, First Forged Envelope and Second Forged Envelope.

Then, talk to Nanaa Mihgo's henchmithra, Cha Lebagta and Bopa Greso, who are just south at J-4. They will tell you to go find some thieves.

Part I: Sauromugue Champaign

Find the first thief atop a tower in Sauromugue Champaign.

To reach the thief, you must first find and kill a notorious monster at the base of one of six towers. To find the NM, search for a ??? at the base of a tower at G-6, G/H-8, I/J-7, J/K-8, K-9 or I-10 (the final point can only be reached by traveling through Banishing Gate no.3 inside Garlaige Citadel). Examine the ??? and the NM, Climbpix Highrise, will appear. Kill the NM to obtain a Grapnel.

Next, go to the tower at I/J7 and remove all of your gear. Then, trade your Grapnel to the ??? for a cutscene to get your first letter signed.

Part II: Gambling with Goblins

Head to Lower Jeuno and talk to Sniggnix in the back hallway of Muckvix's Junk Shop. The goblin will challenge you to a game of dice. Continue playing until you beat him. Sniggnix then asks you to travel to Dangruf Wadi to gamble against the Dangruf Trio for the Regal Die.

Head to Dangruf Wadi, and bring a Rock Salt, Gausebit Grass and Lizard Eggs. You will need to trade these items to each member of the Dangruf Trio to gamble with them.

The Dangruf Trio is scattered at three locations in the zone. You must beat them in a dice game with 50/50 odds, all in row. If you lose, you must try again to beat all three of them, and you will need to get new items to trade to them.

They are at:

Saltvix

  • Item: Rock Salt (drops from Wadi Crab)
  • Directions: Trade the Rock Salt to the ??? at the eastern part of F-7

Grasswix

  • Item: Gaussbit Grass (drops from Wadi Hare)
  • Directions: Trade the Gaussbit Grass to the ??? at F-4, near the entrance to the tunnel.

Eggblix

  • Item: Lizard Egg (drops from Steam Lizard)
  • Directions: You will first need to go through a false wall at F-11/G-11. There is a hole right before a cermet door in this hallway. Drop down the hole and head south. In the corner right before you will be a ???. Trade your Lizard Egg to it and hope you win.

After you defeat the Dangruf Trio in their dice games, it's time to get serious with their sister, Gambilox Wanderling. Head to J-3 of Dangruf Wadi and exit into Drachenfall Ravine in North Gustaberg. Stay on the south side of the river and head towards the waterfall. Near the base of the waterfall is another ???. Examine the ??? and Gambilox Wanderling spawns. Kill the goblin and examine the ??? again for a cutscene and your Regal Die.

Return to Lower Jeuno and trade your Regal Die to Sniggnix to get your second letter signed.

Conclusion

Now head back to Windurst Woods and speak to Nanaa Mihgo for a cutscene and your Rogue's Bonnet.

Actually, rolling against the gobs isn't too bad, but running between them takes forever ugh.

Grassvix rolled a 0 the first time I went against him.

I won the final roll by one as well 761 to 762 or something.

Just FYI, my LS did this the other night. All level 55: THF, WAR, WHM, SMN, DRG, MNK. The gob in Dangruf Wadi was very easy. For the Sauromunge gob, we lost the MNK, but still beat him without much trouble. He DOES have a crapload of evasion, running the parser I had the best accuracy with 40% (Life belt, RNG sub, Battle gloves, lots of DEX). The WAR and DRG were around 20%.

You don't need high level help to do this, just a competent party.

for me the ***** part took: 6 rock salts, 3 gausbit greens & 1 lizz egg.
don't know if that classifies me as locky or not.

as for the first part and the first envelope: made it easily: rng70/nin war53/nin thf52/nin

I am copying and pasting this from another thread I had responded to:

Take a look at this link (if you haven't already) to get the correct context of my post: http://www.bvvp.com/gaming/ffxi/thfhead.html

"I used that site as a guide to get all of my AF. Know a few things though. One thing the guide doesn't discuss is how to get to the most annoying tower, the one that you have to go through Garliage Citadel to get to.

That's where I, and I think the person that created the guide, had to go. If this is where you have to go, you'll of course need 4 people for the banishing gates. You'll need to go through banishing gate 1, and then make your way to the north of that map to banishing gate 3. Pass through gate 3 (it's a little hard to step on all the buttons here), and take a right. You'll only need sneak after gate 3, whereas between 1 and 3 you'll need a little of both sneak and invis. I can't remember exactly where the exit to The champaign from the citadel is after gate 3, but it's not far.

Once you exit into the champaign, the tower is a little while's away to what will be your left as you step out of the citadel. Note that you probably will not need: Do not fall off the edge. If you do, all four of you will have to go back through the citadel.

Also another note. The guide says that a 67BST can take the mob "easily." I brought a 63BST and we almost died. The battle was 20 minutes long, and we barely were able to make the spawn time for his next jug pet once the old jug pet died, and we sometimes would have to kite the goblin around. I brought a DRK and a RNG with me, but at first we though they were useless because they would pull hate off the jug pet. Anything we did would pull hate off the jug pet. Later on we found out though that the DRK could sneak attack the mob and zone, and the rng could barrage the mob and zone. Could have also done SATA to one of them, but we didn't think about that until the very end. I didn't attack the mob because if I zoned it could potentially despawn it, and that would suck. Another note: remember to stay clear of the mob if you have a BST's pet fighting it, because you can get hit by bombs."

Hope that helps someone sometime. For some maps of garliage citadel, one could try mystery tour:

Spawning for Climbpix
# Feb 03 2005 at 11:03 PM Rating: Decent
My friends and I were attempting this tonight and found out that the only tower left to check was behind banishing gate 3; however, stuff came up and we had to postpone. What I want to know, though, is will his random spawning before different when we try it again another day or will it still be at the tower behind banishing gate 3 when we re-organize and attempt it again?

well, edit to this; did the whole quest tonight; had the followin pt:
54thf/27rng
56thf/28nin
60pld/30War
65RDM/32Blm
60Whm/30Blm
55Rdm/27blm

We owned those gobbies like it was nothing, lowest any one got in hp was into the Yellow
I had fun with that one too.

I killed Climbpix Highrise tonight. That guy was a cake walk. Our Party consisted of

63DRG/31WAR
51THF/25NIN
58MNK/29WAR
58RDM/29NIN

He has really high evasion. I was using Life Belt and Battle Gloves and double bone knives and I was having a tough time hitting him. DRG had no trouble since he had Scorpion Harness and double Snipers rings among other things. He doesn't hit hard at all. Bomb toss for about 120 hp. No biggie.

i wasnt too excited about this hat cuz i have had hairpin forever, so i never bothered to get it. tonight i was bored and was just siting around with seek up, so i headed out into sauromungue, found him at the 4th tower i tried, and killed him after fewminuts. 64 thf/nin with scorp, hairpin, and dodge earings. i used life belt over survival cuz i needed the acc more. he it me once for 79 dmg, and the the rest i avoided with about 6 or 7 utsusemi recasts. kept him paralyzed, blinded, and slowed, and didnt use any food. hit me with 2 gobbie bombs for about 70 the first time and 120 the second. i couldnt hit him with any rng, so i pulled a bettle and drained it for hp/tp. wasnt too hard, but im wonderig if the other gobs for the quest ar the same lvl, could i solo them too?

When you initiate this quest Mihgo asks what letter was on your envelop from the Tenshodo Invite quest.

The correct answer is V

I dont know why everyone left this part of teh quest out (it's the first thing you have to answer when you start talking to Nanaa)

The reason they leave it out is because it doesn't matter what you answer; the quest still goes on the same, regardless of what you choose. Personally, I said that I didn't remember.

I got incredibly lucky with this quest. I farmed my own materials in Dangruf Wadi, and beat all 3 of the Dangruf brothers on the first try. I got Climbpix to spawn on the first tower ??? I went to, and a SMN69 solo'd the battles for me. Remember, individual results may vary, and mine represent this quest at its easiest.

Really. This quest description is poorly done. It leaves out a lot of details on how this works. Details that can leave you looking like an idiot to a buncha friends trying to help you get this done. So I'm going to go over how this quest description should read:

---------------------------------
Starting the quest: (Not very hard, not much else to say.)

First start the quest as usual through Nanaa Mihgo who asks you to deliver two envolopes and get them signed again by 2 thieves from Atalbartles Rogue Gang. Her lackies tell you there are in Sauromugue and the Goblin Shop in Lower Jeuno.

---------------------------------
Part 1: (Getting the first letter signed)

- Where?
Your goal is to be able to climb a tower at I-7/J-7 in Sauromugue Champaign where the thief you need to sign the letter is hiding. To do this you need a Grapnel. This grapnel is aquired by fighting a NM Goblin Climbpix Highrise (Go fig).

- Getting the Grapnel
Climbpix Highrise is spawned by "using" one of the "???" that can be found at the base of all 6 of the towers in Sauromugue Champaign. (They are marked on the map as small black squares) However, which tower spawns this NM is completely random. One of these towers can only be reached by going through Garlaige Citadel and the banishing gates. You will need 4 people to get through these, preferably, who can sneak and invis themselves, as the monsters are fairly nasty. If you're lucky, the NM will spawn at one of the easier towers.

- The battle with Climbpix Highrise
The battle with Climbpix Highrise is fairly hard. You will want a party geared toward magic damage. He is a thief type goblin and will use Perfect Dodge at about 1/2 health. His evasion is crazy and he hits pretty hard. 1 PLD 1 WHM 3 BLM and yourself are my personal recomendation at level 53. However, most smart people will bring a lvl 60+ friend or 2 to ensure victory and there's no shame in bringing an alliance if you can gather the people.

- Climb to success
When you destroy Climbpix Highrise, he will drop the Grapnel. Lot on it and head to the tower at I-7/J-7. You will need to un-equip all your stuff (yes, git nekkid!), and trade the Grapnel to the ???. You will get a nice lil cutscene which results in your first letter being signed.

---------------------------------
Part 2a: (This can be done alone, as it may take awhile if you have crap for luck)

- Starting off:
Assuming you just got done with Part 1, head up to Lower Jeuno and go to Muckvix's Junk Shop. There's a Goblin in the middle hallway named Sniggnix. He will want to play a game of dice. You must beat him, and then he will tell you to go Dangruf Wadi to play dice against the Dangruf Trio for the Regal Die.

- The Dangruf Trio
Now this is the fun part. You must beat these guys in a dice game with 50/50 odds, all in row. What I mean by that is, if you lose to any of them, you have to start all over and talk to the first guy. Also, everytime you play one them you must give up an item. So if you lose, not only are you out an item, you are out all the other items you used to get that far. You must win all 3 without losing, in this order, with the listed items:

1) Saltnix
Item: Rock Salt (Wadi Crab)
Directions: Trade the Rock Salt to the ??? at the eastern part of F-7
2) Grasslix
Item: Gaussbit Grass (Wadi Hare)
Directions: Trade the Gaussbit Grass to the ??? at F-4, near the entrance to the tunnel.
3) Eggvix
Item: Lizzard Egg (Steam Lizzard)
Directions: You will first need to go thru a false wall at F-11/G-11. There is a hole right before a Cermet door in this hall way. Drop down the hole and head South. In the corner right before you will be a ???. Trade your Lizzard Egg to it and hope you win.

You will note I put mob names next to these items. All the items you need to trade can be farmed from these mobs that reside in Dangruf Wadi. They're easy drops, especially for a Thief with TH2 ;) Or you can buy the items, whatever you want. This part can take as little as 15 minutes, to who knows how long, depending on your luck in the dice game. I failed Grasslix twice. When I finally made it past Grasslix, I was happy I defeated Eggvix the first time.

---------------------------------
Part 2b: (The battle with Gamblivix Wanderling, gather your party)

- Finding her
After you defeat the Dangruf Trio in thier little dice games, its time to get serious with thier sister, Gamblivix Wanderling. Gather your balanced party of at least 6 people @ level 53 and head to the Drachen Falls Ravine from the North Gustaberg exit of Dangruf Wadi at J-3. Stay on the South side of the river (ie, don't go over any bridges) and head towards the waterfall. Near the base of the waterfall is another, you guessed it, "???". Prep your party, because this one comes out swinging.

- The battle
Gamblivix Wanderling doesn't have the evasion that Climbpix had, but she makes up for that by pretty much spamming bomb toss and goblin rush and hitting hard. Of course, if you have a BLM with half a brain, he'll just stun the goblin in the middle of these fits, making this battle a fun, but easy one.

After you defeat Gamblivix Wanderling, click on the same "???" and you get your "Regal Die" and a happy little cutscene.

Say your thank yous to your helpful friends and let them go on thier marry way. You don't need them any more. Nothing but a few NPCs to talk to now.

---------------------------------
Wrap up: (Look at my cool hat >.<)

Trade your newly aquired "Regal Die" to Sniggnix in Jeuno and you'll get an interesting cutscene (no spoilers here :P) that ultimately results in your 2nd letter geting signed.

SUCCESS!

Now head back to Nanaa Mihgo. She'll toss you your hat of uber farming goodness, and send you on your way.

Since it is understandable why some people would do this quest at later levels, being that the item is partly worthless for continual use, there's some information I would like to add.

Second time we found him in the tower behind Garlaige, so in order to do this you must have a minimum of 4 people in order to get through first, second, and third banishing gates. Mobs you want to look out for are bats (sneak), those slimes (sneak), bombs (invis and aggro to magic at a range) and skeletons (sneak). Once through the third gate, if you proceed to continue, you'll find an area that has a long stairway just like the area how you entered Garlaige, so just follow that up to the top. There are skeletons around here so you need to watch out if you will catch attention.

Upon spawning Climbpix at the random tower (those 6 black dots you see on the Sauro. Champ. MAP), you must note that the main reason why he is hard is because of his VERY HIGH EVASION. Melees should bring an extra lifebelt or +accuracy gear would be beneficial. When he gets somewhere about half HP he'll use Perfect Dodge when you see some kind of green effect and a boom sound.

There is no level restriction to do this, so I want to mention that I've done this two times, first at 58 and another at 60.

At 58, we took it out with three people. 58 WHM/SMN, 58 WAR/NIN, 58 THF/NIN. I charged 100% tp before battle and once it started, WAR provoked, I did SATA+Hide+Viper Bite behind the war and got the hate held there for awhile, not to mention that he held it pretty good with his +enmity gear and Rampage WS. The fight was not that hard at all, it was mostly about hitting him when he was not evading the attacks and using TP to bring him down to his knees. Having a BLM wasn't necessary. But then, we were a few levels higher than Climpix.

At 60, we went to go hunt him again as 60 THF/NIN, 60 WHM/SMN, 60 PLD/WAR, 60 RDM/BLM. This was ridiciously easy, hidden SATA+ 300%DE made the hate on the PLD for the entire battle. Needless to say, it did not take very long for him to become defeated. If you've noticed something, the second time, the item wasn't for me, rather it was for the RDM. So if you are aware, you CAN spawn Climpix with another job as long as you have the quest initiated and procedures done beforehand as THF.

this confused the bleeeeep out of me... you must start this quest before you can get gulsam to talk to you.

THIS is af THREE... but must be started BEFORE guslam will give you your Af2.

Much trial and error discovered this ;p

Guslam would NOT talk to me til i talked to niina mihngo. and when i did she gave me the two copies of the letters and the hideout location

At first i thought maybe THIS was my af2. but the item has a lvl 54 limit...

The gloves have lvl 52....

I again went to guslam and bingo cutscene and af2 started.

-------

Does anyone else find that to be messed up? lol

just shareing my information so other thieves hopefully wont be as confused as me!

This is indeed AF2. The confusion arises because you're numbering them in a different fashion. You're not the only person to number them this way, but its not the commonly accepted method.

The commonly accepted numbering works like this...

AF1 is your weapon. You can get this quest at level 40.
AF2 is your first quested armor piece. To get this, you must be level 50, and have completed AF1.
AF3 is your second quested armor piece. To get this, you must have finished AF2.

The other pieces are your gloves (which involve a quest, but aren't considered an AF#), and the two items spawned directly by opening coffers. The gloves quest can only be started once you've started the AF2 quest, and the coffer items can only be obtained once you've started the gloves quest.

The level of the equipment is considered irrelevent when determining which AF# the item is.

As an example, WHM AF3 refers to the robe, which involves a quest ending in a fight in Fei'Yin. The robe itself is a level 58 item, and is thus the 5th piece that you can wear as you level up.
Does this sound right?

I have the thick as thieves quest, im level 55 now and because of this i havnt got my af2 yet, anyway, when i touch the ???'s in Sauromugue they say "cannot climb with your bare hands" or something to that extent, im told thats not even remotly close to what it should say even IF its not the right tower.
Now i understand it might be that tower i cant get to through Garlige (and if so what does it take to get to that tower..)
Thanks in advance for help and tips

That's exactly what it says if its the wrong tower. The only time it says something different is if you have the right tower. Run a circuit around all the towers you CAN get to and if you don't activate the goblin, then I'm sorry to say you're making a trip through the Citadel (bring your Selbina Clay for the monument if you haven't done that already, too. It's in the same area).

This description is pretty awfull .. let me try and give it a better try:

1- Talk to naana mihgo to get the quest
2- I went to the 1st twr in Champaign, clicked the ??? while NOT HAVING anything in my hand slots. It spawned.
3- Our pt consisted of a SMN, PAL, RDM, THF, THF (me) and i believe a BLM. We killed it pretty quick but some where definitly highelr lvl. I didn't hit it that much (50 thf)
4- Get crapnel
5- Go to twr thats pretty North exactly on line I and J. Trade crapnel to ??? while being all undressed, else it will say ur too heavy
6- After Cutscene go back to jeuno, talk to Sniggix (between rooms in gobbie shop) and win the dice roll. Now he will send u to get regal die
7- Go to wadi (that part is ok in description). Bring rocksalt, Gausbit grass and lizz eggs. I'd say around 6 of each.
8- Now you have to roll dice with 3 gobs located at F7 ???, F4 ??? and F11 ??? (the hidden wall is at the West end of the F11 room, drop in the hole, go left and find the ???) If you loose 1 bet u have to go back and start at the 1st gob again at F7..
9- Kill the wandering (Havent done that part yet)
but that should be self explanatory..

I will update it if new things are discovered..

Just a note on the goblins fight. Even though you have to touch the ??? for the Regal Die you have to kill Gamblix for each Thief in your party who needs it. I did it with another Thief and he activated the fight first. When I examinned the ??? after the fight I was told "It smelled like Goblin". Five minute cooldown and then it spawned Gamblix again for me. So if you need two know you'll have to fight it twice.

did the first part with 3 thieves (52, 54, 61) and 1 70 rdm.

a couple notes on the first part: the NM does not spawn at any tower at any time. it will only spawn at one at a time which is random. also keep in mind that one of the towers is on a cliff which is only accessible through Garlaige Citadel. since we had to get 3 Grapnels, we killed the first on that cliff, left one person there, the other 3 killed another somewhere else, and since the 3rd spawn was again on the cliff, the person left behind spawned it and then ran down to the rest of the party.
