Summary

You've received a letter from the dark knight, Zeid. He says he has a new trial for you and Chaosbringer.

Description

After completing the Blade of Darkness, head to J-7 and talk to Gumbah again. He'll give you a letter from Zeid, telling you that you can complete the Chaosbringer sword.

Use the sword to deal killing blows to another 100 mobs, bringing your total kills with the weapon to 200. Then, head to J-7 on the first map of Gusgen Mines and trade the greatsword to the ??? at the small pond. Afer a cutscene with Zeid, you will receive your new Deathbringer.

If you threw away the original sword, you can take the boat in Palborough Mines again to get a new one.

Ok... just so everyone is on the same page and there is no more confusion...

1. You cannot kill the monsters with Magic, DOT spells, Weapon Skills, or suicide (as mentioned before... many, many times)
2. You can zone, log out, die, and do any other possible thing that your little imgination can come up with, and still complete this quest.
3. You could, theoretically, buy this sword from the AH... but this is also a one-time-only quest that is worth the fame at least.

Now before anyone decides to try and prove me wrong... I have completed both the DRK flag quest and this quest. My main job is WHM, so I could care less about DRK... so when doing these quests, I zoned several times... changed jobs to go level... farmed... went back to the quest... logged... came back to kill more... zoned... changed jobs again.... leveled again... and came back to kill more... etc.... etc...

So, in conclusion... yes, you can play the game normally and as long as you EVENTUALLY kill the appropriate number of monsters with the respective sword, you finish the quest.

I hope that there is no more confusion about what you can or can't do now.

i know this question has probably been asked 1000 times before but, if u die, can u be raised and have the kills still count? or, are u back to square one if u get killed?

This question has been asked 1000 times, please read the forums before posting a question, most likely its already been answered in about 20 different ways...

to answer the question: your fine if you die, just kill 100 mobs with that sword...if you kill 99 and then decide to lvl ur WHM from 1 to 75 in a year, you can still come back at the end of that year, kill one more mob , and the sword is yours...

I finished this quest last night with just slightly over 100 kills with the Chaosbringer. I only used the Chaosbringer (no other weapons or ranged weapons). I did this over the course of a couple weeks off and on. I got all the kills leveling my Dark Knight from level 1 to 6. I used Stone as a spell several times, but never killed an enemy with it. I had used Hard Slash and in some instances killed a mob, but didn't count those kills. I learned Stone and Poison during the course of the kills. When I traded the sword to the ??? I was a level 57 Samurai / 28 Warrior. hope this clarifies things a little. I know i was rather confused.

just looked the info up on KillingIfrit. To get Deathbringer, you must kill a total of 200 enemies with chaosbringer. this is 100 over the amount you killed to get the Dark Knight flag. If you threw away the sword, however, and got a new one, the coutner was reset, and you must kill 200 enemies after getting the new chaosbringer in order to get the deathbringer. hope this clarifies things a little. I know i was rather confused.

I got this quest as a lvl 17war/8rng and i got Zeids letter after talking to goombah, i still had my chaosB saved in my safe ever since i completed the drk flag quest. I did not throw it awya,, i kill 90 monsters, then got d/c and killed 30 more to be safe, i was at 120 kills with intermittingly using a WS here and there. i went to the ??? in gusgen mines, and it said "nothing seems to be happening" my LS told me that it can only be done once every so often, (meaning someone else already traded to the ??? b4 me). im not sure, but that could explain why alot of people killing off 100+ arent getting it. the ones killing 200+ can be coincidentally trading it to the ??? long after no one else has traded to ??? (just a theory (im gonna log out and try trading it again later, and post my results)

I unlocked DRK ages ago, and threw away the chaosbringer. In my adventures in palsborough i tossed maybe 3 more. Then I got another to do this quest. I did 100 kills, not enough. I did 150. Not enough. I cleared 200 (210) and I got it. Mind you I used NO weapon skills and no magic. All I did was draw sword, hit monster until dead, sheathe sword, repeat.

I took very good tallies, when I counted up exactly 100 tallies the first time I went and got my DRK job, then the second time I counted up exactly 100 tallies went to Gusgen and got the Deathbringer, One thing you have to remember is if you kill a mob with a weaponskill it doesn't count so i didn't add it to my tally, also if your in gustaberg which alot of people seem to be, when you're fighting bees, if they use final sting and kill themselves that doesn't count and wasn't added to my tallies, if you're fighting gobs and they fail at a bomb toss and blow themselves up that doesn't count and was not added to my tallies.
I also know you can switch weapons as i switched between great axe, scyth, and the chaosbringer.
And you don't have to do it all at the same time. I actually did mine over the course of 3 days.

[edit] whoops, didn't notice that there was a second page, I was wondering why I couldn't see my post. looks like the information I stated was already said.

Here's a few rules when it comes to using the Chaosbringer.

1) No Magic kills, by nukes or any other means.

2) No suicides, if a goblin tosses a bomb and kills himself that way, it won't count. If a bee uses "Final Sting" that won't count either.

3) If a DOT (Damage Over Time) spell ends up killing the mob it won't count either. Normally the message will be "Bee has fallen to the ground."

4) You must deal the final blow with the sword, it must say "Hit Bee for X damage. Bee has been slain by Me."

5) You can zone and you can even log out without completing the 100 kills in one session. As long as the total amount of kills with the sword is 100 you are fine.

Hi. I completed the Flag quest for DRK, got the quest and letter from Zeid from Gumbah again, killed 115 mobs, using WS sometimes, and everytime I trade it to the blind moby pond, I get a "Nothing is Happening" message...can someone help me?
I go there as my 30 RDM/WHM, sword unequipped, and it won't work with trading or clicking on ???.
I kept a VERY close tally of mobs, and've killed 115, didn't drop the first sword, so I only had to kill 100 more, right?
Not true
# Jul 31 2004 at 8:23 PM Rating: Default
Its not true that weapon skill kills dont count. i kept a carefull tally of my kills and when i got 100 i was able to trde for deathbringer, even though many of my kills were with weapon skills.

Oh mannnnn. I took the time to do this and killed 105 mobs just to be safe, went to the Gusgen Mines, killed a few things that aggroed on the way to the Blind Moby spot at (J-7), then traded it to the ??? and nothing happend. Can you not use any other weapons between the 100 mobs and the trading with the ??? ? What a waste of time that was.

OK, so I'll switch to my DRK 12 job and pound another 100+ miserable creatures with Chaosbringer. At that point, do I need to visit Gusgen as a DRK, or can I switch to a more survivable job and take the sword to the pool in the mines that way?

The answer to this question is: You don't have to be DRK when you take your Chaosbringer to Gusgen. I did all the killing as DRK, but I went to Gusgen as a WHM 38 so I could teleport to Konschtat and sneak past the undead in the mines.

I actually doubt that you need to be DRK to get Deathbringer, since a WAR can wield Chaosbringer, too. Deathbringer is DRK-only, though.

Nostalgic, it's me Asterlan, the Cutscene is not when you walk into Gusgen, it's when you go to the pond at J-7 (I think) and trade Chaosbringer to the pond, then you get the cutscene.

If you haven't done this, then when I log on next time, then I will help you do that.

Min Level is incorrect.
# May 03 2004 at 12:35 PM Rating: Decent
Technically the min level is not correct. When doing the DRK flag quest my WAR deleveled down to 29. I completed the flag quest and immediately went to get this quest as a 29 level WAR. So, I don't think you need to be 30, you just have to have completed the DRK flag quest.
Doing this just for 1 more quest to be done.
# Apr 28 2004 at 6:19 PM Rating: Decent
Personally I hate such quest that requires killing 100 mobs with the ghetto Chaosbringer, especially my WAR is level 6, hehe.... I have to use my Wax Sword +1 to land the 1st hit, then have Chaosbringer do the rest of the job.

I am doing this quest just because I want to have 1 more completed quest added to my record ;-)

I just got the sword, you can use your warrior, just as long as you kill it with the chaosbringer. Don't need to use drk job. 100 kill for drk, 100 more kills for deathbringer. I do believe if you drop the sword after you become drk, you have to get a new sword and kill 200 with it, but not 100% sure.

Kill at least 120 monsters

When i did this quest to get the sword i took meticulous tallies of the number of monsters that i fought while i slowly leveled up my Dark Knight and farmed a bit, stopping at 112 kills. I was very disappointed when i ran all the way out to gusgen and the pool wouldn't except my sword, then i ran to the other side and that one naturally wouldn't take it either. So in the end i ghetto warped back to bastok.

The moral of the story is it takes less time to kill an extra 10 monsters than to have to run back out to gusgen. And while gusgen is relatively safe for a level 30 character you never know when the bogey type monster is going to spawn above the pool while you are in the cut scene and start wailing on you. Fortunately, i still got the sword and was only 100 exp shy of 30 after dying again.

Last time i checked. Smothered Schmidt has a very regular spawn rate, in that he spawns very, very often.

He tends to spawn when you cross a certain point near the pond.

I believe he spawns about 30 seconds after you get in range of the ???.

That's just my theory, so be careful during that cutscene. But there's usually lots of high lvl people farming these ghosts, so i wouldn't be all that worried.

And if you think you're gonna have some trouble, just ask a high lvl in the mines to come watch for the ghost to spawn. I'm sure they wouldn't mind getting a malflood ring(even though it's a crappy ring)
doing quests
# Apr 05 2004 at 3:06 AM Rating: Decent
Quests raise your faction in the city they are completed in. Faction determines price of items purchased and sold so that the price is lower the higher the faction and the price when you sell is higher the higher the faction. Faction also gives you access to certain higher level quests that have greater rewards. I do easy quests whenever I can.

Which pond in Gusgen Mines do you trade the sword to?

The pond is at J7 on the first map level of gusgen (entrance level).

This sword is a perfect example of the role as game designer as saddist. The sword simply sucks. You would think that after completing the quest to become a dark knight they would give you a decent sword.

If this was a single player role playing game, the game designer would have given you a decent sword. But since this is massively multiplayer, the game designer sees their role as a player torturer. The more pain they put you through, the more time you will spend playing the game and therefore the more money they will make.

As if the profits from these games were not high enough. Typical massively mutiplayer games take in millions of USD per month.

Why do the game designers put in "features" that simply waste your time. In a single player game many features are added that save you time. On the whole FFXI is better than most other massively multiplayer games in that the designers have put in some nice time saving featues. The boat back from Palabrough Mines is one of those time saving features resembling the ones use in single player games. I love those features. This sword is unfortunately NOT one of those times.

It is a simple equation greed plus a certain level of meanness plus an addictive game and therefore a captured audience equals sadism. This is not unlike the way a drug dealer treats their customers. Interesting parallel?

I just got this quest after doing a few levels on my dark knight.

Gumbah tells me to take this letter to him in parlborough mines, but when i go back there, no Zeid!

Am i missing something?

You do not need to go back to Zeid unless you lost/drop your Chaosbringer.

You can examine that letter under your key items. After examining, you will find that you can start your 100-110 kill as the letter is from Zeid

I had finished my 100-110 kill..but yet to go to Gusgen, i believe it should work ^^

That is the sword you get in the link above.

lvl 5 Damage: 20 Delay: 466 +8 ATTK

Now that is not a bad great sword for lvl 5....

However as someone said... if AH really sells it for 500 gil... and you are already at bastok... how about do bubbling bernie 2 times to get the gil to buy it? that is 2 kills instead of 100 kills... and you can use any weapon or job you want heh.

Also... people that play DRK use Scythe because they have the highest skill cap in that weapon... so if you use Great sword to lvl 10 or 15 that is alot of Scythe skill you will have to gain later. I would guess that having to go back and kill easy mobs to raise skill solo and then convincing a group to allow you to cap Scythe back off would not be worth using a great sword for... which is probably why this thing sells for so cheap in the AH.

And for the guy who was so happy with the name of the weapon... well they don't know the name of the weapon unless they check your gear... however they can see great sword or scythe from a distance... most people prefer the cool scythe look than a weapon with a cool name. I don't know which group of people you fall in... but I would suggest scythe due to looks and skill level caps.

BTW yes I am not a DRK... so I have not done this quest... but I will be doing the DRK flag this week (raised my Great sword skill to 50 to prepare for flag) and I read up on alot of info in this game... so please don't write off this info as useless just because I don't have DRK in my sig file.... it will be there soon and I have done my research.

apparently not...the cap for GSD and Scythe for DKR is the exact same until lvl 61...Most people take both a Scythe AND a GSD with them lvling, and use both while killing mobs and getting skillups, and this sword is absolutely EXCELLENT for a long time, until you can get Braveheart.
So no, you haven't done ENOUGH homework, and nobody invites you cause you "look cooler" with a scythe...

Well, after seeing contradictory information in this thread, I thought I'd just like to add that you only need 100 more kills after you receive this quest, not 200 more like some others were mentioning. I assume they either miscounted, or had to reclaim their sword and thus started from scratch.

Secondly, I'd like to add that I had a power outage during the second 100; I logged back in, finished the number of kills I needed, and then went to the pond in Gusgen to claim my prize. So at least logging out doesn't seem to affect your kill count.
buy it cheap
# Feb 09 2004 at 3:38 PM Rating: Default
don't bother killing another 100, just buy the sword from AH. It sells for 500 in bastok, cerebrus server. Way better than spend another hour running around killing bees and worms.
RE: buy it cheap
# Feb 27 2004 at 9:57 PM Rating: Default
Well i see it diferently myself. Its an excuse for spending an hour to get low level repeatable quest items AND the ability to do a unique quest in and of itself.
